RUSHING
with perfection
A flawless makeup application begins with the right tools. We bring you the 7 makeup brushes that you actually need. words Meghna Sharma
Foundation Brush
A round, fluffy and flattipped synthetic brush, it’s amazing for blending and buffing foundation on to the skin. The shape is perfect for smooth application and will really work to cover pores for a flawless finish.
Investing
in and using the right makeup brushes and tools will not only help give you a flawless makeup look, but you’ll actually save money in the long run. How? Well, put simply, you’ll use less product and your makeup will last longer (i.e. remain germ-free longer), if you keep your hands out of your colours and formulas.
16 dlfpromenade.com/ JUNE-AUG 2013
Powder Brush
A soft, round, large natural brush, it’s the most common of all brushes and should be in every makeup collection. This is a must-have brush for dusting powder on the face. You’ll use lesser product than you would with a puff and it gives a more even, naturallooking finish.
Blush/Bronzer Brush This is a soft, mediumsized dome-shaped natural brush which has ultra soft and long bristles, so as not to disturb foundation or irritate the skin.
Eyeshadow brush
Eyeshadow Blending Brush
Eyeliner/Brow Brush
Lip brush
A small, flat, round-tipped brush it should be used to define lips. It also makes precise lip colour application easier.
This is important when you are filling in your eyebrows. It is angled so that you can get even the thinnest areas of your brows. It’s also a multi-purpose brush as it can be used on your lash line for eyeliner and your brow to fill it in. Plus it is the most user-friendly of the eyeliner brushes due to its easyto-maneuver slanted angle.
A flower-shaped, soft natural brush, it is the ultimate blending brush for eyes. It can get into the crease of your eye and define your lid with precision.
A small, stiff, flat natural brush, you need it to apply eye shadow all over. It will give your lids a smooth finish and more intense pigment than a fluffier brush would.
How to clean your brush
For a deeper clean wash your brushes with shampoo. Add a drop of shampoo to a cup half full of warm water. Swirl the brushes around and then thoroughly rinse. Let them dry flat [on a towel] as if they dry upright, the water will drain into the metal casing and break down the glue causing bristle loss.

MEET THE
multitasker
Still clueless about the hows and whys of BB creams? Here’s a crash course. words Hansa Makhijani
If
by acne blemishes, pigmentation, uneven skin tone and dark spots.
It owes its recent hype to Korean celebrities who attribute their flawless, porcelain skin to this wonder product. It is particularly a boon for those traumatised
But what’s in the BB cream? It packs in the goodness of a serum, sunblock, moisturiser, primer, blemish corrector and foundation all in one easy to use product. You can easily replace your tinted moisturiser with a BB cream. If you’re the type who gets bogged down by the various steps and products involved in daily skin care regime, the BB cream is your best friend. All you need to do before you apply it is wash your face and use a toner. However, if you have dry skin, you may feel the need to moisturise before you reach out for your tube of BB cream as it may feel dry and stretched otherwise. Also, if you use an
you’ve been spotting one too many BB creams at beauty stores of late, you are not alone. The BB cream, short for ‘Beauty Balm’, has taken over the beauty industry and finds its origins in plastic surgery. A medicated version of the cream was strong enough to heal scars of patients post surgery and also provide light coverage at the same time to hide the visible marks. What was earlier a prescription-only cream created by a German dermatologist, now comes in a reduced strength cream suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin.
anti-ageing cream, it would be best to apply it prior to the BB cream as most of them do not have anti-ageing properties. Its light coverage and natural finish make it a great alternative to foundation. Most brands offer a minimum SPF of 25, making it perfect for day wear. In case you stay in the sun all day, there are options with a higher SPF of 50 as well. However, even this super product has its limitations. You’ll still need to invest in a foundation for dense coverage, especially for night outs. Also, while the BB cream is a great replacement for a day cream, it’s by no means an alternative for night cream. Also on the horizon are BB creams for men. Well, why should girls have all the fun?

Just like clothes, there’s a whole range of options one can explore with makeup as well. It is so liberating because you get to throw all of those traditional ‘rules’ of makeup out the window and let your creative juices flow. But in order to make it wearable, since we aren’t all prancing down a runway each day, try and use some restraint and balance. That means highlighting one feature, rather than your entire face, to avoid looking like you got sucker-punched by a clown. Eyes and lips are screaming out for a new look to welcome in the summer, and this exciting trend is perfect for those wanting to make an impact with their makeup.

Smokey eyes will always have a place in our hearts, but for now, black and grey’s younger, fun-loving relative is in town and ready to party. Relive the ’80s with electric blue, create envy everywhere with emerald green or be a Barbie girl with pink. Coral and fuchsia, red and peach, plum and orange – the colour combos are endless but the easiest place to start is with your peepers. Violets, greens and pale blues all feature in this season’s colour code. The choice and the rainbow is yours. Layer the colour for a stronger look, and complete with a coat of black mascara and a thin line with a discreet feline flick to really draw attention. Also, it’s time to wave goodbye to the peach pouts as this look is all about vivid and vibrant shades. The key colours to use here are pink and orange. For this look to really be effective, it is important to make sure your lips and kept in luscious condition. To achieve the two-toned pout apply a moisturising lip balm before the colour to create a soft and subtle base. This will allow the colour to sink in and last longer. Patchy colour says more kids colouring book than colour block. Always line your lips to keep lines sharp and neat. This line should be in a slighter lighter shade and should not be clearly visible, but it will ensure the shape of your lips looks fantastic. M.A.C Lip Glass Series, `1,500

Hair romance
Mirroring the phenomenon of the striking colour blocking trend on the catwalks to our wardrobes, we now bring you the latest take on dip dyed hair – colour blocking. This trend might be a new kid on the block but it has the power to upgrade the simplest of outfits with a contemporary twist that is suitable for all ages. Also referred to as panelling, colour blocking in hair involves adding colour to just a portion of the hair like the bangs or an unexpected streak peeking out from underneath a layer. This trend can involve bright and bold colours or more natural looking highlights or lowlights. The effect of using contrasting or complimentary tones in the blocking process is very dynamic and adds an interesting dimension to the overall hairstyle. It is a simple way to add colour to your style with a creative edge. Positioning of the colour blocks is critical to achieve the right effect, so make sure you are working with an experienced and trusted colourist if you are considering jumping on this hair trend. Talking about the trend, celebrity hairstylist Rod Anker says “Colour blocking has always and will always have a place in hair as it does in fashion. It is an easy way to enhance an area or detract the eye from eyes. It is also the safest way to add a little drama to your hair, without being overly crazy or adventurous.” But will it turn into a phenomenon? Explains Rod, “When you talk about hair and fashion, the synergy is obvious. It’s always taken from the catwalks to the salons and this trend is not exception. Hair is an extension of fashion and you will see draping and blocking being interpreted side by side with hair.” Rod suggests that technique looks best on hair that is styled straight and sleek, but can also work on waves. This trend is sure to turn heads in wonder of your uniquely coloured locks.

Colour-clashing talons
Do you ever stare at your collection of nail polish, wondering which shade to shade to wear? As the colour-blocking trend has also made its way to nails now, there is no need to stop at just one colour. Ten nails are the perfect canvas for experimenting with ten different colours. Shape and buff your nails first, to keep the colour looking neat and clean. The look takes the dominant aspect of fashion and translates it to a fun makeup look. There’s just one rule – the brighter the better! Paint your nail alternate colours or do half and half on each – it’ll spring clean your look in a flash.

Some
trends just don’t wither away. The cat eye trend is one such. Whether it’s Katy Perry, Sonam Kapoor, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie or our favourite Dita Von Teese (she rocks the look like no one else), the cat eye has many famous fans and loyalists. And they look even better on dense Indian eyes with brows that frame the eyes so well. While they may appear hard to execute, it’s not really rocket science. Here’s how you can go about it.

Other than grooming your brows and tweezing away strays, it’s important to prep the skin and make sure that no blemishes and marks distract from the eyes – they should be the main focus – not that zit you had five days ago. Apply a primer and follow it up with a good concealer around the eye area, especially if you have dark circles. Next comes the foundation to hide blemishes and make the skin appear radiant and dewy.
2
To Shadow Or Not
When you look at celeb pictures, you may feel they haven’t used eye shadow and decide to ditch it when you try your hand at the look. Look closer and you’ll realise that eye shadow has been used to add dimension to the eyes. Swipe neutral eye shadow and shade the crease with a darker tone of the same. For a fun, pop art look, go wild with yellow, blue or pink eye shadows. Don’t forget to use a highlighter under the arch of your brows – you can also do this at the end.

Use a kohl pencil to line the inner rim of the lower lash line. If you usually mess up with liquid liner, try a gel or cream based liner as it is very easy to remove them in case you go wrong. Also, if you’re not too confident of your handy work, keep lots of cotton swabs and eye makeup remover handy. You can simply dip them in the remover and use over strays without having to redo everything. This is where it gets tricky – getting the same shape on both eyes. Use the bottom lash line as a reference point and act as though you are extending your lower lash line upwards towards the end of the brow (that’s why groomed brows are important for this look). Viola!
Finishing Touches
Accentuate the look by using a volumising mascara. Steer clear of boring nude lips for this look and use a noticeable colour, preferably in a matte finish to look red carpet worthy! L’ORÉAL Paris Matte Mania Lipstick in Crazy Fuschia, `825

MONSOON WISE! A change in weather calls for a change in the skincare regime as well. We tell you how to tame your tresses and keep that skin radiant this monsoon. words Meghna Sharma
Mane trouble
Hair is usually a disaster during monsoons with it constantly suffering the dry/wet-dry/wet routine. You may thank the Gods for driving away the scorching summer heat but your hair may not. We tell you how you can let your hair have a happy monsoon too!
38 dlfpromenade.com/JUNE-AUG 2013
Opt for a balanced diet: Hair growth and texture vary from person to person, depending on your diet and the kind of hair care routine you follow. One should eat a balanced protein, mineral and calcium-rich diet. Vitamins and iron play a very important role in maintaining healthy hair. Make sure you include lots of fruits and salads in your diet, especially beetroot and flax seeds.
The skin care regime
If the summer heat made you sweat off all your kajal, the rains and humidity are here to only make it worse. There are still those who manage to look dewy fresh while you have tyre tracks streaming down your face. It’s not rocket science; the best skin care tip for this season is to keep it au naturel. Here are some handy tips on how to keep the skin fresh and glowing.
Go for short and trendy cuts: If you can’t handle unruly locks, celebrity hairstylist Rod Anker suggests that you should get a funky, short haircut this season. It’s easy to manage, low-maintenance and works beautifully with curly as well as straight hair. Go for a DIY hair spa: Massage your hair with hot coconut oil, which is not only a relaxing experience but a vigorous treatment that focusses on the blood circulation for your head. Irrespective of the season, do not restrain from a head massage as it increases micro-circulation, tones the scalp and fortifies the hair.
Avoid getting your tresses wet in the rain as pollutants might weaken the shaft bonds making your hair dull
1.
If you have dry to normal skin, dab toner on your face before applying makeup. For oily skin, apply astringent instead.
2.
Always check the colour of your base make-up, once done, with the colour of your forearm. They should match.
3.
For breakouts and pimples during monsoons, apply a neem face pack at least thrice a week to nourish your skin.
4.
Acidic skin makes your face look grey after makeup. Avoid heavy makeup and have fresh fruit juices, coconut water and fish or cod liver oil to counter it.
Wash your hair well: Whatever the season, you can wash your hair as many times as you want. During monsoons, you can wash them every alternate day to protect them from dirt and impurities. Cover your hair: Avoid getting your hair wet in the rains, as the pollutants in the rain may weaken the shaft bonds, making your hair dull. “Use a scarf or a broad-rimmed hat to protect your strands or tie a ponytail,” says Anker. dlfpromenade.com/JUNE-AUG 2013

rainy season might bring respite from the scorching summer heat but they definitely put even the most fashionable ones to test. All that engulfs a fashionistas mind is what to wear during the rainy season… as the staple pair of jeans are no longer appropriate. Footwear too becomes an issue due to the puddles and the gusty winds rule out flowing dresses. So, how do you navigate the puddles and unexpected showers, while looking your best all through? We tell you how to put your fashionable foot forward this season.

The rainy season demands for a more casual look but that doesn’t mean you dress up shabbily! The emphasis is on no-fuss fashion and fresh colours. Adding bright colours and sparkles to your clothes and accessories is the perfect antidote to grey weather. Don’t let a downpour dampen your mood this season. It’s easy to look your best! Bring out your brightest outfits. If your style is more subtle then give your outfit a pop of colour with an accessory that stands out. Steer clear of full-length pants, instead, opt for knee-length dresses/ skirts, tailored shorts or cropped pants. Avoid layered and flowy outfits and wear materials that are water resistant and dry easily, such as nylon, chiffon, cotton blends or mixed fabrics. Lycra works well for dressy occasions.

Foot notes
No matter how much you love your suedes and leather footwear, monsoons calls for no-fuss footwear. Choose from an array of waterproof sandals or slippers. Since going bright is the look of the season, one can look for unusual shades. Opt for shoes made of PU – easy to keep dry and clean. If heading out carry a pair of heels in your handbag, wrapped in plastic, so you can slip them on right before entering a party.

Accessorise smart
It is important to compliment one’s outfit with the right accessories. Look for waterproof bags in interesting colours. Jewellery is another tricky subject. Avoid materials that tend to tarnish, such as silver. Ceramics and beads are in, keeping with the eclectic vibe of the season. Keep your jewellery minimalistic – complete your ensemble with an interesting neckpiece or a pair of earrings. Umbrellas and raincoats can serve as accessories too. Umbrellas today come in all shapes and styles – polka dotted, striped, multi-hued, angular, graphic, even transparent. Choose something that resonates your dressing style. For raincoats, it is best to stick to conventional hues like black and navy blue, so that it matches everything you wear.

Remember
the time when you are desperately looking for tissues in your bag but can’t find one? It’s not Murphy’s Law, it’s just a matter of getting organised. Keeping a little pouch in your handbag is the best way to avoid these OMG situations. Get your hands on some wet wipes, face mist and a mini jar of all purpose moisturiser that you can use on your hands as well as face. Another indispensable product is a sunscreen so that you can re-apply every four hours. Next, assemble products that help you upgrade your look in case of impromptu plans of painting the town red. An eye pencil can help you define your eyes and can also be used to create smoky eyes – just sweep some mascara to really open up your eyes. A hydrating lipstick or gloss takes care of that pout. And we can’t have you smelling bad, now, can we? A solid perfume is spill-proof and compact and very easy to apply. Smear it on your pulse points and you’re ready to conquer the world!

Ananda In The Himalayas Why we recommend: Just an hour drive from Rishikesh, the capital of yoga and meditation, Ananda In The Himalayas is touted as one of the best destination spas in the world. Six Senses Samui Why we recommend: Six Senses Samui is set on a gently sloping headland at the northern tip of Samui Island. The resort is made up of just 66 private villas, many with personal pools, which are landscaped within natural vegetation, and with glorious, sweeping panoramas out to the Gulf of Thailand and the surrounding islands. The property offers all the treatments you would expect from a Six Senses Spa, and each one tailored to an individual’s needs. One can choose to have treatments in either air-conditioned individual spa villas or with tropical seabreezes in private salas. Whatever location you choose, you’ll be greeted with a spectacular view across a rock-fringed bay to the Gulf of Thailand. USP: Six Senses Samui has many unique treatments to calm and rejuvenate one’s mind and body. They have a vast menu that is a rare mix of signature Six Senses therapies to locally inspired treatments. While on one hand their signature therapies encourage your worries and stress to melt away, the local Thai healing and pampering treatments help in boosting blood circulation and energy channels. We recommend their Thai Scent treatments that subtly act upon the relevant senses to enhance the feeling of confidence and wellbeing. Espa at The Istanbul EDITION Why we recommend: The traditional Turkish hammam, where topless women scrub you down, can get a little ‘too real’ for some. Thankfully, Espa’s new resort marries old-world traditions with modern upgrades (marble slabs, clothed employees!). Expanding over three floors, the stunning and elegant decor boasts rich metallic woods, upholstered walls in exquisite horsehair, sumptuous seating and a contemporary hammam lined with opulent chocolate marble, all creating a distinct sense of luxury and elegance. ESPA at The Istanbul EDITION guests are offered an unparalleled spa experience incorporating beauty, health and wellness in a setting of exquisite luxury. USP: The Signature Hammam combines steam and a menthol salt scrub applied with a textured kese mitt, with body mask and head massage. You will be shocked at how much dead skin comes off and how your bod has never felt silkier. Where: Espa at The Istanbul EDITION, Istanbul, Turkey Website: espaonline.com

Aman Spa at Amangiri Why we recommend: The Aman Spa at Amangiri is a destination in itself, providing a serene setting for relaxation and rejuvenation. And we don’t blame Brangelina for hiding out in this remote desert valley off-duty. The entrance is reminiscent of nearby slot canyons and opens into an intimate reception and lounge area featuring a glass tiled, sky-lit reflection pool and a central fireplace. As guests move from space to space within the spa, their sense of discovery echoes that of moving through the rock formations and canyons within the surrounding landscape. USP: The spa menu has been created to reflect elements of Navajo culture and healing traditions. The Navajo have an all-encompassing philosophy of life, viewing all that exists in the natural world as manifestations of the Sacred. The Aman Spa treatments are designed to restore ‘Hozho’, which in Navajo means ‘beauty, harmony, balance and health’. Where: Amangiri, 1 Kayenta Road, Canyon Point, Utah. 84741-0285, USA. AFTERNOON SLUMP
64 dlfpromenade.com/JUNE-AUG 2013
It’s
4pm. Your eyelids are drooping, your chin is propped on your hand and your mind is slowing down... Welcome to the afternoon slump. Most of us have been there – a super-productive morning finishing projects and working towards inbox zero. And then the clock strikes four and we might as well pull down the shades, throw on pajamas and hop into bed. It’s completely normal to feel super-tired once the afternoon rolls around. Circadian rhythms which affect our sleep patterns, may be to blame for the midday-slump. In fact, our ‘sleep signals’ peak at night and during the afternoon (right around 4pm), which may explain why we want to grab an afternoon cat nap. We help you rev yourself up with easy natural remedies. The payoff: long-lasting energy that doesn’t fizzle. Exercise smart: One needs to identify that point while exercising that leaves one feeling revived versus drained. Twenty to 40 minutes is the ideal
agree that caffeine will give you a quick energy surge that you pay for later. The exception: green and black teas, which not only contain lower levels of caffeine than coffee but also L-theanine, a known calming compound. The result is evenkeeled, focussed energy rather than the peaks and valleys associated with coffee and espresso. Keep mints handy: Peppermint – smelling it or tasting it – stimulates the trigeminal nerve, which is connected to the part of the brain that induces wakefulness, reports Alan Hirsch, the founder and neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, Chicago. Try diffusing an invigorating mint-based scent in your work space or chewing mints or spearmint gum to stay awake. Eat chocolate: Yes, really. Eating small amounts of dark chocolate may boost physical endurance, say researchers. The optimal daily dosage is found in a five-gram piece of dark chocolate, which is roughly the size of two postage stamps. But remember, the benefits will disappear if you consume more, probably because the cell receptors involved in energy production become overloaded.
Try to get into the habit of these helpful tips in order to prevent the midday slump from happening in the first place.
ALL-DAY ASSISTS
window to build muscle and endurance but not deplete your system. Break down your time into the ideal routine of 10 to 20 minutes each of cardio and strength training a few times a week. Also, a midday trip to the gym may not only boost productivity; it could ward off sleepiness, too. Stick to some light aerobic exercise before getting back to the books. Move away from the screen: Step back from the screen. In order to avoid eyestrain (which can make the eyes feel tired) keep a safe distance from the computer screen – about an arm’s length. That, or try a pair of snazzy computer glasses. Walk it off: Head bobbing at your desk? Taking a 10-minute brisk walk provides energy that lasts for up to two hours, according to a study at California State University. It’s even better if you can go outdoors as exposure to sunlight helps regulate your circadian rhythm, so you stay more alert. Stretch it out: Feeling stiff ? Stretching out can provide a quick boost of energy. If there’s no stretching station in sight, try a handful of desk stretches to keep the muscles loose. Use caffeine wisely: Experts
Get enough sleep: This may be a no-brainer, but getting enough sleep is vital to staying energised throughout the day. Remember breakfast: Forgoing the most important meal of the day may lead to an energy crash come 4pm. Eat a healthy breakfast to sustain energy throughout the day. Eat a small(er) lunch: Opt for a smaller (but satisfying) lunch; choose something with more proteins and less carbohydrates to dodge drowsiness. Avoid sugar: A little sugar may go a long way — in the wrong direction. Consuming some sweets may provide a sugar-high that will only lead to a sugar crash, causing us to become even sleepier. Stay hydrated: In order to avoid dehydration and its sleepy side effects, just keep sipping. Aim for 11-16 glasses of water a day. Stand up: Whether you’re the ‘Slim Shady’ or not, please stand up! Staying on our feet could help avoid drowsiness and increase focus. Skip the booze: Fatigue is a symptom of the good ol’ hangover, so avoid drinking during the week, or keep consumption at a minimum.

FEED YOUR
We get you some cream-of-the-crop ways to nourish your skin from the inside out words Shilpa
They
say that youth is often wasted on the young… that we don’t appreciate great skin and a fast metabolism until we get older and both start going in a direction we wish they hadn’t. But in the wide world of nutritional benefits, it doesn’t hurt to add some foods to enhance our beauty as well, right? As beauty products get more high-tech, the top complexion cures still come from the most natural quarters. We get you some miracle foods that guarantee a beautiful looking skin with a flawless complexion.
Get glowing with Chocolate
Even a small piece of chocolate provides us with high levels of cocoa flavanols, which have been associated with softer skin. Cocoa hydrates the skin, making it firmer and more supple, and dark chocolate contains high levels of flavonols which is a potent type of antioxidant. For maximum flavonol content, eat chocolates which have least 70 per cent cacao. But remember, one needs to consume it in proper quantities. A couple of squares a day should be enough to improve luminosity. It also helps reduce the possibilities of a heart attack and in purifying the blood. Visit Chokola and take your pick from the an array of choices according to your liking
Protect with Pomegranates
For a powerful source of antioxidants, you don’t need to look much further than the luscious pomegranate. In fact, a study conducted at UCLA ranked ten beverages according to their antioxidant-fighting power and pomegranate juice came in first. That’s how full of health-building, skin-saving antioxidants pomegranates are. They’re packed with polyphenol antioxidants that fight free radicals and regulate skin’s blood flow, giving it rosiness. One pomegranate or a few glasses of juice daily should do the trick. When applied to skin, the fruit’s antioxidants help smooth lines and moisturise. Head to Nando’s & try Madeira Red, a refreshing pomegranate drink

Prevent Wrinkles with Yogurt
The protein one gets from eating dairy products makes skin become firmer, so it’s more resistant to lines. Greek yogurt is specially beneficial as the protein content is often double that of a regular yogurt. Eat a single serving daily to make your complexion smoother, and apply to calm irritated, dry or sensitive skin. Head to Cocoberry & Gelato Vinto and savour your tastebuds with a huge helping of frozen yogurts
Get Softer Skin with Walnuts
Walnuts contain omega-3 essential fatty

metabolism rate naturally. It can help you burn up to 70 calories in just one day. Guardian Pharmacy has some nice options for green tea lovers.
Calm Redness with Green Tea
Women who eat green and yellow vegetables regularly tend to have fewer wrinkles, especially around the eyes. Also, studies show that carotenoids – the antioxidants in yellow and orange veggies – can decrease skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Switch to salads this summer and watch your skin grow younger. Head to Smoke House Deli and Big Chill Cafe and savour fresh salads for breakfast or lunch.
Green tea is very high in antioxidants, particularly one named EGCG which is proved to reduce redness. Studies have also demonstrated that green tea helps fight inflammation. Sip at least one cup of green tea a day and fight redness. Not just that, green tea helps in weight loss as well. Green tea burns fat and boosts your

Oatmeal is less processed than other varieties so it retains more vitamins, plus, it takes longer to break down in your body which helps keep your blood sugar stable. It’s important as research shows that spiked blood sugar elevates your body’s level of androgens, hormones that can contribute to wrinkles. Also, oats are exceptionally skin healing. Mixed Lettuce Salad With Cucumber Herb Vinaigrette
Rustic Irish Potato and Cabbage Soup Ingredients
Ingredients
1 small cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon nonfat or low-fat plain yogurt 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 small garlic clove 1 pinch salt 2 cups Red Oak or other red leaf lettuce 2 cups Freckles or other baby romaine 1/2 cup sliced radishes 4 scallions, sliced 2 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion peeled and cut into chunks 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1 pound head of green cabbage, cored and sliced thin 4 medium gold or white potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped 4 sausages or brats (we used spicy buffalo sausage) 4 cups light gluten-free broth 1 cup gluten-free lager or ale, optional 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds, crush them if you like 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1 table spoon apple cider vinegar 1 pinch raw sugar salt and fresh ground pepper, add to taste
Instructions To prepare vinaigrette: Puree cucumber, oil, vinegar, chives, parsley, yogurt, mustard, horseradish, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a blender until smooth. To prepare salad: Season a wooden salad bowl by rubbing with garlic and pinch of salt. Chop the garlic and add to the bowl along with all the lettuce. Pour 1/4 cup of the vinaigrette over the greens; toss to coat. (Cover and refrigerate the remaining 1 cup vinaigrette for up to 3 days.) Serve the salad garnished with radishes, scallions and hard-boiled egg. Skin Tip: Salads are a great source of fibre that leaves our skin hydrated and supple. But if you want a happy skin, then cucumber is the answer. As cucumber and the skin share the same level of hydrogen, it becomes easier for cucumber to mask all the problem areas.
70 dlfpromenade.com/JUNE-AUG 2013
Instructions Heat the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium-high heat and add the onion; stir for five minutes. Add the garlic and cabbage and stir together; cook until the cabbage has wilted. Add the potatoes, carrots and sausages and stir. Season with caraway, parsley, sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Pour in the broth and gluten-free beer, and stir together. Cover and bring to a high simmer; then lower the heat a bit and simmer until the vegetables are fork tender - about 45 minutes. At this point, add a touch of cider vinegar and a pinch of raw sugar to liven things up. As always, taste the soup and season to keep your own palate happy. Skin Tip: Not only will your skin be nourished and moisturised but cabbage helps in keeping your skin blemish free and leaves it glowing. Potatoes also work as an anti-aging treatment, skin lightener and brightener, and an anti-inflammatory to quickly revitalise stressed-out skin.

A well-kept secret
It has been said that Nando’s chicken is simply the greatest-tasting chicken around. But what gives its chicken that heavenly flavour? We tell you the age-old secret behind it.
The
origins of Nando’s chicken dates back to the time when Portuguese explorers discovered the famous Spice Route to the East. What they also discovered along with it was southern Africa’s best-guarded secret… the tiny African Bird’s Eye Chilli. Countless recipes for Peri-Peri were developed to celebrate the newly discovered taste sensation and these were faithfully guarded and confidentially passed down from generation to generation. Our world – famous Nando’s Peri-Peri chicken was also created from such a combination of old-world mystery, ancient recipes and fiercely guarded family secrets. And till today it’s that unique African Bird’s Eye Chilli that adds that edge to Nando’s chicken. Nando’s only uses A-grade chickens, that are trimmed of excess fat and our secret Peri-Peri marinade is made from 100% natural ingredients – no preservatives,
no added MSG, no flavourants and no colourants. Nando’s chicken is never fried; it is always flame-grilled and no oil is used during the grilling process. In fact, the remaining fat is burnt off during grilling, resulting in lower cholesterol without impacting on that addictive PeriPeri signature taste! We are passionate about our brand, our chicken and our customers, and that’s why we always source the highest quality products and the freshest ingredients from reliable and certified suppliers. But what about those new nasties – Trans-fatty acids – did you ask? Well, the good news is that Nando’s foods are Trans-fatty acid free. So, it tastes great and nutritious? Yes, because the truth is that the very same Peri-Peri that amps up our chicken is loaded with antioxidants that increase blood flow to stimulate appetites and speed up metabolism. Peri–Peri is also
believed to be an excellent purifying agent and a tremendous source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Now that’s what we call really, really good chicken! Also, Peri-Peri triggers the release of endorphins (chemicals produced by the body to provide a natural high). That explains why some people say that it is a great aphrodisiac and brilliant for one’s love life! When one’s passion and love for something is as intense as our passion and love for Nando’s chicken, one can find many valid reasons for you to have Nando’s chicken. But the most important reason to dig into Nando’s feel-good, realflavour chicken is because it simply is… Really, really good chicken!
