I travel very frequently, around 15 days a month. Taking an example of my recent travel schedule, it was like, from Tuesday to Thursday I was out travelling. So yes, most of the days in a month I keep travelling. The destination where I travel depends on where my business takes me; it is generally to the top urban metros. The Tier II and Tier III cities also happen but depends as per the business needs. Our headquarter is based out of Taiwan and our regional headquarter is in Singapore, so internationally, travel happens to both these places, but most frequently it happens to Singapore.

W

hich airlines and hotels do you prefer travelling with? And why?

My most preferred airline is Jet Airways. I like the way it handles everything elegantly, after all it’s all about the presentation. Off lately while looking towards all the connectivity

and everything, Jet remains the preference. Internationally, I prefer Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways. In India I prefer two chains for my stay, one is Hyatt and the other is the Taj Group of Hotels. Taj comes with a kind of a legacy and elegance with which they present themselves. It’s all about the comfort, you feel like at home. The kind of comfort, the kind of leisure and food you get… all the facilities make you comfortable when you are with these chains of hotels. However, while staying abroad I prefer Hyatt chain of hotels.

A

re you a frequent flier member with airlines? Do you find it useful?

I have been a frequent flier member with Thai, Singapore and with Jet Airways. It really helps me in terms of a lot of conveniences which comes along. The most convenient thing for me is, rushing to the airport just 30 minutes before the flight. That is the foremost thing for me. It helps me with early check-ins. Other conveniences that come is

on the preference of the seat, I usually prefer an aisle seat rather than getting cornered in the centre or near the window. What really helps is when I am on the international route, I can access the lounge, and that is where you get a good convenience if you have a stopover.

T

ell us something about your top three airport experiences?

From the way they have maintained the infrastructure to their innovations, and to making travelling a convenient affair for the travellers, Changi is one of my favourite airport. Another airport that I would like to mention is Bangkok Airport, which becomes a good hub for Thai and lots of sectors across. While you are in a transit, you have all the facilities and services that you can enjoy at Bangkok airport, like shopping and eating. Also, the way T3 airport has revamped is brilliant. The only thing I can say is that since our benchmark has gone up, T3 can be expanded further to give more

BUSINESS TRAVELLER walkways to the passengers, which would make it even better. The shower lounge facility at the airport has also come out very well and helps you go to your meeting straight after you land.

W

hat are the essential comforts and facilities you look for while traveling? One thing that I always carry with me while travelling, is my Tumi traveller, a stroller which makes me comfortable, as it easily stacks clothing of two to five days. Over the period of time, I hate waiting at the carousal for my luggage to come, which is why I prefer travelling light. I am not very choosy in my accommodation, and I believe brands like Hyatt, Taj, etc are very well placed to serve you with the best. But, essentially, the hotel should be close to the business area.

D

o you plan your travel through some agencies or you do it yourself? Why? Our business travel is done through our agency, Corporate Flyers; they are very efficient and prompt. They have understood our likings, our travel, so they understand our needs. You don’t have to travel for pain; travel should be easy as our lifestyle is very busy in today’s time.

D

o you attend any frequent exhibition or events annually?

I h av e b e e n m i s s i n g o u t o n t h o s e o p p o r t u n i t i e s ; I h ave b e e n g e t t i n g invitations for some thematic festivals from various markets. Those are primarily talking about what are the new offerings coming

from a travel perspective, but I have been missing it.

W

hich convention or exhibition centers do you find the best out of all those you have visited till now? The convention centers for the different needs of the guests are designed in diverse manner; whatever the execution of the events you go for. The main thing is that they should be laid out properly, and should be accessible. Largely these days various conventions are being done in the hotels, as various hotels have come up with amazing facilities in India and internationally. Convention facilities for Hyatt Singapore is pretty nice as it is easily accessible from all over the hotel. The kind of facilities and conveniences they give, in terms of LED/LCD or the sound system, serving of food, everything is done pretty well. Also Taj in Bengaluru from the convention perspective is very well equipped, as it has a separate entry to its mesmerizing convention area.

W

hat gadgets do you always travel with?

Firstly, I believe that while travelling, I should spare time for myself, rather than indulging in gadgets. But, the only gadget I travel with is my HTC phone. Internationally, you have all the in-flight entertainment facilities taken care of by the airlines. While on domestic route, whenever I am in the flight I prefer relaxing and I like to think at peace. Device from a gadget perspective, is only my HTC phone.

C

an you give out some tips to the fellow business travellers?

“I am a relaxed traveller, but if things don’t go the way I want, then I get fussy. If by chance I am not carrying my Tumi hat kind of traveller are you? W (Fussy, Relaxed, Casual or Traveller, then I Spontaneous) am fussed.”

In terms of phone, I would suggest business travellers to carry HTC One as it will keep them very well connected socially, and has enough space to carry all the content required. I feel the most important thing that every traveller should understand, is to travel light. Secondly, you should make your necessary arrangements in time and carry the devices which will help you stay connected. And yes, plastic cards are a must, as plastic money has added a lot of convenience.

MANU SETH

Director Marketing, HTC India

I am a relaxed traveller, but if things don’t go the way I want, then I get fussy. If by chance I am not carrying my Tumi Traveller, then I am fussed, I am all messed up. Because, then I start missing on things.

“When travelling and doing business travels, Jet remains the preference. Internationally, I prefer Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways.”

H

ow much time do you spend for preparing yourself before travelling? Maximum time that I need is just 30mins, because the way I have been travelling is such that I need to keep everything well defined and ready. So, I just need half an hour to get ready, pack up my bags and leave.

A

ny country/city you are looking forward to visit?

Off lately, I have been planning to cover some remote markets in Nor th East, I have been to Guwahati and Aizawl but I am looking forward for more. In South of India I am also looking forward to soon visit Pondicherry. Internationally, I have been covering Asia and Australia but whenever I will get an opportunity, I would like to visit America, specifically Seattle, which is calm and all about landscapes.

D

o you think spending extra money for a Business Class seat is worth?

When you are on a long haul flight then yes it is worth, as it gives you good comfort. While travelling for business, the next morning you have to perform with the same deliverance and business class helps you to avoid fatigue. When you are covering long haul distances, to be a relaxed traveller, boarding a business class is worth it.

H

ow do you spend your time in the flight?

Recently, I have been spending time in the flight by talking to people, knowing people from different walks of life. When I am done with reading magazines and newspapers. It is good to talk to people, about new segments of different industries, etc. and, whenever I have time, power nap is the best option. as told to NIKITA CHOPRA October 2013 GO NOW

Preferred Domestic AIRLINE Bringing a new theme every month, helping you choose better, GoNow’s October issue yet again brings you views from the corporates, CEO’s and business heads from around the country about their preferences in domestic airlines. Some of their main concerns that emerged are☛  The importance of flying on time is paramount. Irrespective of travelling for work or leisure, airlines that stick to their flight schedule instantly gain preference. ☛  A business class seat even for domestic flights can sway the passenger’s preference. Seat comfort and leg-room are criteria that are considered even for short haul flights. ☛  Airlines should also take special initiatives to help disabled passengers and help them reach the aircraft with ease without

putting their safety in jeopardy. ☛  Fliers tend to travel more with

those airlines where the crew attendants are warm, hospitable and well informed and at the same time are visibly happy to help. ☛  Airlines with ease in booking

online and those that offer discounts make your travel easier right at the outset. ☛  Domestic carriers which

provide the highest standard of food, always win the votes of its passengers. ☛  Airlines which have an

updated and a youthful approach towards serving their fliers tend to keep a smile on their faces while bringing 100% satisfaction to them. ☛  Also, airlines that offer benefits

to its frequent fliers tend to entice more passengers as it offers extra benefits to them. October 2013 GO NOW

“IndiGo has a more youthful approach to travel’’ ANAND KAPOOR President, CSSG

“I

hate travelling so when it comes to choosing an airline I am particularly fussy. The whole process of getting on a plane and travelling from A to B is a chore. So I am particularly conscious of the airline I travel with. When it comes to domestic travel it’s a tough choice between Jet and IndiGo. After the demise of Kingfisher I have travelled with both airlines. IndiGo has a more youthful approach to travel which is reflected in their logo. They are efficient, fast with few frills. They pride themselves on being a no frills airline. The cabin crew is soft spoken and answer all questions without making you feel like you are being a nuisance. Jet has taken the market gap that was left after Kingfisher’s demise. Their approach towards travelling to both international and domestic destination is to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible and that you are occupied throughout. The main difference is that they serve food on Jet. They are fairly corporate and business like but this makes for efficiency.”

“I

appreciate GoNow’s initiative in bringing out this story which will encourage other airlines to provide better services to passengers. Airports are gateways to the world. Currently, several ad-on services are being provided by major airports for making air travel more convenient and comfortable. However, accessibility for elderly and persons with disabilities is one critical aspect which has been constantly overlooked. There are many elements that can impact on the passenger experience at airports. Till now, most airlines in India continue to carry disabled passengers up the staircase to the aircraft, risking the person›s safety and dignity. Fortunately, in the recent times, there have been some signs of reform and efforts to improve airport accessibility for persons with disabilities. Airlines like IndiGo have come up with accessible passenger ramps including low floor buses for ferrying passengers between the terminal and the aircraft making it easier for people with reduced mobility to plan their travel. There is a need to ensure that accessible facilities are provided at airports to enable persons with disabilities travel around the world at their convenience.”

am sure whether it’s a business traveller or a person travelling for leisure, everyone wants to reach on time. In the good old days, when Kingfisher used to fly, it was by far the best carrier to fly as it really took care of its fliers. People would ignore slight delays as the airline would make up for it with the personalised service they would impart. These days it seems that ‘service’ has been thrown out of the window, no one really bothers for their fliers. The only airline which stands out today is IndiGo as they ensure that flights are not delayed and reach on time but god help you if you have checked in baggage. I strongly believe there is a huge scope of improvement in the quality of our domestic airlines and if the concerned authorities take care of small things, it would make a huge difference in the flying experience of its fliers.”

important aspect I prefer travelling with the rather hospitable Jet Airways. Having flown this airline quite a few times and every time their service has surpassed my expectations. The in-flight ser vice, food and all round packages has been consistently excellent. For a domestic airline they are a class act. The flight attendants are terrific, the cabin is comfortable and inviting, and the food is always absolutely delicious along with an extensive range of food and beverage option in the Business Class. Long-haul flights are just more pleasant on this carrier. With continuous and unremitting travel schedules that corporate have these days; airlines should have more flexibility offered in change of itinerary during emergencies and avoid delay in schedules.” October 2013 GO NOW

MICE DESTINATION The Wieliczka Salt Mine

GoNow talks to Aneta Ksiazek, Chief Conference Expert, Polish Tourist Organisation on what does Poland offers to the MICE enthusiasts and brings you a list of some fascinating venues. ANETA KSIAZEK

W

hat are the basic attractions that Poland offers for MICE? Poland is all about freshness, we are a fresh country, and our meeting industry is just 20 years young. In our history there have been a lot of changes, in terms of infrastructure, we have new hotels, also many of our hotels are based in historical venues, they have comfortable interiors, and it is good to use these kinds of boutique hotels. Along with these we also have a number of International chains in the country, for those who love staying with a brand. Especially after The Euro Cup in 2012, the presentation of the country has changed. After this, we have new infrastructure, stadiums, new hotels, which can also be used for your meetings space. We offer our guests with the heritage, cultural experience, warm hospitality and a competitive price. We offer value for money. People in Poland are ready to host groups from India, as we believe it is always good to work with those companies who have experience with the international clients.

The mine gives you an opportunity to arrange your own ceremonies, dancing parties, conferences and business meetings. The meetings and events taking place in the mine are conducted 320m underground. The venues in the mine have unique and attractive interiors which gives a touch of architectural

ow has the flight connections by Emirates & Qatar to Poland helped you? This is one of the very important developments for us. Specially, the price that they have set is very good. Taking my own experience, I would say that I was flying with Emirates to New Delhi and it charged me something around 600 Euros for the ticket. At the same time, for the same flight schedule, Lufthansa was three times more expensive. Emirates and Qatar will always be the most important carriers for us. Adding on, they also have their respective frequent flyer programmes, and clients can use it and make their trips easier.

W

hat are you looking forward to from India? We are present in India since 2006 as a leisure destination and we have established a good image since then. Now, we have just started venturing into the MICE industry. India is an upcoming market for us, as it is one of the largest inhabitants in the world. The flight connection has also improved. We started as a campaign with India and will continue with China and also Japan. Poland

Chief Conference Expert, Polish Tourist Organisation Convention Bureau is also dealing in Europe and United States. We have venues with varied sizes, which can host conferences, galas and meetings very elegantly. We are a medium sized countr y and we can easily host medium sized events. It wholly depends on the destination you are looking at, as each destination in Poland has something different to offer. The most beautiful part of Poland can be seen from spring to autumn. You can have beautiful experiences from April till September. But the statistics tell a different story, in winters also i.e. February and March we do have conferences and incentives in the ski resorts. Our main motive is to be different from other countries; we want to be prepared for special and different needs of the clients. You won’t find many big international chains of hotels but you can find the unique experience of playing underground golf in the coal mine. This is something very special and extraordinary. Also, you can host a gala dinner in the salt mine where you don’t even have to pay extra for interesting decor or video effects as they are already there by nature.

H

ow has the Euro Cup 2012 helped Poland grow? Euro Cup was the most important event in the last 20 years. Along with new infrastructure, the image of the country has also changed. That was the time when people from all around the world came to the country and it helped us in getting international recognition. This event helped us pass on the grey image of the country. After the Euro Cup the perception of our country, what are we capable of, got changed and now we are thinking about other events, specially sports events and other possibilities to show the world that we exist. The infrastructure which was built at that time is brand new, we do have concerts and conferences there but we are looking forward to use it for sport-centric events. This is the right moment for individuals and groups to host meetings in Poland.

It features a lounge area with two community tables and four tables included in a VIP exclusive lounge that make you indulge in luxury. The central attraction of the club remains with a centrepiece spiral chandelier which has over 500 crystal tubes appearing to pour down onto the intimate dance floor in an array of colours. “We thought this is the right time to launch something like Alibii, the city needs it. We would be concentrating more on making the club experience all about you as we want every person that enters the club to be treated like a celebrity. What we are offering is very different

blueFROG Adored by music lovers, blueFROG is one of the biggest platforms for live music. Musicians from India and around the world perform six nights a week at the club, which is known for its acoustic excellence. Along with this, the lip-smacking menu is modern European with Asian inspirations that take the palate by surprise and leave you desiring for more. According to Tina Kapur, Communications Head, “Being a music and dining venue, we wanted to have proper dining tables, but with unfettered sight lines of the stage. Hence the ‘pod’ design came about where one can enjoy a meal and still take in a show at the same time. The different levels that the pods are situated on also contribute to the guest’s clear viewing of the gigs. Our brief to the architect was ‘La Scala Meet The Mill’. We wanted to create a cutting edge interior without compromising on the integrity of the old mill structure. Therefore we have retained the pillars and beams as well as the north light windows that are iconic to Bombay mills.” blueFROG entertains its guests with retro nights, comedy nights, acoustic nights etc. where they run F&B specials on such nights creating deals depending on the crowd and

Through the day, the malls are alive with bustling crowds of shoppers, both locals

Amongst the many malls in the city, the three that stand out in Bangkok’s main shopping street, Rajadamri Road, are CentralWorld, Central Chidlom and Zen Department Store. The variety of brands ranging from luxury, high end to affordable mid-market, is incredible. You find endless rows of shoes, handbags, clothes and electronics. With over a 100 eateries to choose from, all offering scrumptious, clean

If you are looking to shop with a specific t heme in mind such a s a wedding trousseau, you may like to consider trying it out. The service promises you a team of three professionals helping you out – which includes a stylist, an ex-model and a magazine fashion editor. Nancy makes sure to mention that it is important to book this at least 2-3 weeks in advance as it is a much in demand. Worth a special mention is the Central Food Hall, an amazingly mind boggling super market stocked with

all the goodies that can drive you insanely hungry. It is a great place to grab some Thai curry paste and other local ingredients to carr y back home. We sure had our bags full! Fun find for young women is Illamasqua, a British cosmetics brand with extremely bright colour makeup – only for the adventurous! DINING: enter the Food Loft, an inviting, clean and convenient food court serving over 10 world cuisines. The food tastes authentic, delicious and fresh. The service is prompt and the staff is very helpful and courteous. Language is not a worry here and most dishes are clearly displayed and well explained in English. The beverage counter offers a variety of fresh juice and health drinks while the dessert selection can leave you confused and wanting to try just, one more.

ou will quite instantaneously forget the mall and the crowds at Zen Department Store as you enter the fine dining arena called Heaven on Zen – a cluster of four restaurants starting on the 17th floor right up to the rooftop. It is designed such that there is one restaurant on each floor with a distinct look and character. However, common to all four is the specular panoramic view of the entire cityscape of Bangkok and outdoor seating. We meet with restaurant GM, Warren Lucas, who explains that their central location is one of the primary driving factors. “Heaven on Zen is within 5 minutes walking distance from at least 20 five star hotels”, says Lucas. With over 6,500 sqm of space the four restaurants together can accommodate over 2,000 people and provide for good venues for private parties and corporate events. ZENSE located on the 17th floor serves five international cuisines with five top-rated restaurants; Thai by White Café, Italian by Gianni Ristorante, Japanese by Kikusui, Indian by Red, Modern European by To Die For plus dessert by ZENSE Patisserie. This semi-formal cocktail bar and restaurant has beautiful outdoor spaces with tables surrounded with water, a long outdoor bar area and terrace tables. Guests can be seen getting pictures taken against the city views enjoying the

weather even in the month of August. On the next level, is Shintori – Japanese Art Cuisine. As the name suggests, Shintori ser ves modern Japanese cuisine with emphasis on art and presentation. On the 19th floor is Hor izon, with primarily outdoor seating, the bar serves tapas and excellent views. You can enjoy a few drinks before heading down for your mains. The outdoor seating and the pleasant and cool breeze is a welcome change from the confines of a mall or the astute navigation of busy Bangkok streets. Lastly and the newest edition is Heaven on the 20th floor rooftop, an entirely outdoor lounge space that can take up to 300 people. You will feel on top of the world (or Bangkok)! The views right from the 17th floor onwards are uninterrupted as the other buildings are not quite as tall. We decide to dine at Shintori. There is an open sushi kitchen and a live kitchen at the two ends of the restaurant. We pick a table next to the window and take in the amazing atmosphere and the realization of having come up right to the top of Bangkok. Its night-time and the view is glittering with lit up buildings. This large restaurant can accommodate up to 220 covers and is spaciously spread out with the design kept clean and minimal with long tables.

We are lucky to arrive on a day when they are introducing new dishes to the menu. We order an assortment and start with Fresh Wasabi with chicken breast meat and rocket salad. The chicken is cut into thin slices and cooked to perfection. However we did wish for a stronger hint of wasabi. Next up is the

Crispy Avocado and Tuna nuggets – crispy fried nuggets with a generous filling of tuna. The Peking Duck rolls Vietnamese style was delicious and the presentation was thoughtful and modern. Last up was the pan fried Sea Bass with lemon sauce. The fragrance of the lemon was immediate and the dish tasted delightful. We concluded the meal with the recommended Green Tea Tiramisu which was wiped clean off the plate in under five minutes. The cake was wonderfully light and flavourful and an interesting spin on the traditional dessert. An interesting aspect of the presentation is that each dish is first placed on the table at a particular spot right under a spot light and then served – they really want you to notice the art in the arrangement and presentation. The staff was very friendly and prompt. They were particularly helpful in selecting dishes that would suit the palate of an international traveller. by PRIYAANKA BERRY

but notice the wall of green creepers on the façade of the building, followed by a towering green wall behind the bell desk next to the hotel entrance. Evidently, working alongside nature was a conscious decision. Inside, you step into an effective yet simple lobby area designed primarily in warm hued teak wood and Thai black granite, all locally sourced. Not surprisingly, we are informed, that the hotel is designed by an internationally-known and award-winning company, WOHA Designs of Singapore. With intent, the architecture and design of the hotel reflect Thai sensibilities in a modern environment, creating a beautiful balance between the traditional and the contemporary. Having arrived by the early morning flight, we head straight to the room to catch some much needed sleep. Here again, at the Urban Suite, we encounter a vertical green wall created by placing together several small plants – definitely a smart way to create an appealing view in an otherwise dense city surrounding. Balancing architecture and environment

T her e i s a he a v y e mp has i s o n an environmentally friendly design. The vertical wall of green creepers on the façade of the building not only beautifully conceals a parking lot but also naturally absorbs CO2 from the cars. The hotel features naturally ventilated and open air corridors that allows for natural air to circulate and cool the entire building, therefore not requiring air-conditioning to be used 24 hours a day. The vertical green walls and green spaces throughout the building are irrigated from recycled water from the building itself. Hansar’s facade has a distinctive bronze coloured mesh that not only visually gives it a distinct quality, but also works as a sunscreen that helps to prevent the building from taking in too much direct heat.

and aromatic preparations. Our personal recommendations include, Tom Yum Shrimp soup, Thai Prawn Cakes, Phad Prik Sod– your choice of meat served with fresh chili, garlic and rice. The café is open to nonguests and you can also buy homemade pasta and freshly baked breads and pastries. The other dining option is Vue Bar and Terrace that serves a standard fare of international and local dishes for breakfast. You can fill up your plate and head out to the balcony/ patio to enjoy the outdoors. We peeked into the restaurant in the evening to discover that it transforms into a fine dining French restaurant at dinner time. The breakfast buffet island was done away with and the space acquired a cosy ambience with tea lights and dim lighting. The property also features a rooftop sky terrace and kitchen with indoor and outdoor spaces; great for a small cocktail or evening function. The frangipani trees with daybeds that provide a comfortable environment as you soak in the beautiful sunset. Discovering the hotel further, we stumble onto the LUXSA Spa on the 10th floor. Ying, the Spa manager explains that all products used are natural and rely primarily on local ingredients. The name Luxsa comes from Sanskrit and translates to “healing – health through water”. This understating combined with the ancient Thai healing methods based on the four body elements of earth, water, air and fire, forms the essence of the spa concept. Another good recreational opportunity is the infinity edge pool on the 8th floor, that has been designed with a cantilever edge that provides guests a sense of swimming among the high rises. The only downside being, that the pool is overlooking other high rise buildings which doesn’t say much about the views. Verdict: Very successful hotel in the hear t of Bangkok city, waiting to be discovered by the Indian market, offering excellent value for money. by PRIYAANKA BERRY

PLANNING A WEDDING: OUR EXPERTS CHOOSE YOUR DESTINATION Planning a destination wedding and unsure about where to tie the knot? GoNow speaks with three of India’s leading wedding planners and asks them for their recommendations both within India and overseas. The responses bring up exciting locations such as Jagmandir Palace and Manek Chowk in Udaipur, a relaxed beach wedding in Hua Hin and extravagant locations in France. These skilled organizers take care of really everything that needs to be done from the décor, arrangements with the venue and catering. Read on to discover how getting the right location can add the magic and the ambience to create the perfect wedding.

Vandana Mohan Before you pick the destination T here are many things that must be considered and thought through before finalizing a wedding destination. It is important that we understand the dynamics and capacity of the shortlisted destination and identify diverse venues for the many traditional wedding functions. For example one should study the accessibility to the place, that is, the number of flights and preferably have a direct connection from the hometown, and ensure sufficient and welcoming accommodation for all guests and a venue that caters to the food requirements and expectations.

The royal Rajasthan wedding In my view, the best wedding destination in India has to be Rajasthan – it has the most romantic royal cities such as Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaipur. Rajasthan adds to the ambience and charm of weddings and makes them grand and mystical. The

VANDANA MOHAN “My favourite venues are Jagmandir, a palace built on an island in the lake Pichola; Manek Chowk, the grand courtyard in the city palace and Zanana Mahel, the queen’s palace.” 66

GO NOW October 2013

lakes in the city of Udaipur have their own charm, and offer majestic and innovative settings. Besides, there are a wide variety of luxury hotels such as Oberoi, Leela and Taj which have well equipped spaces, perfect for various matrimonial events and ceremonies. Taj at Umaid Bhawan has three banquet halls and lawns that can accommodate around 2,000 people. The Leela at Udaipur has 3 large banquets- Marwar, Mewar room and Guava Garden which offer banquet space for up to 200 seated guests with an additional outdoor capacity for 100 standing guests. The Oberoi Udaivilas has a small banquet for 70 people and can be used for pre and post wedding events. They can also organise a beautiful experience for the bride and groom wherein a decorated horse-drawn carriage arrives at the entrance to take the lady to the flower-adorned Shiva Temple located amidst lush gardens within the resort.

The ideal locations in Udaipur My favourite venues are – Jagmandir, a palace built on an island in the lake Pichola; Manek Chowk, the grand courtyard in the city palace and Zanana Mahel, the queen’s palace. Jagmandir in Udaipur i s t he Venice of t he E a st and getting mar r ied there is tr uly an experience. The island glows in the dark like a jewel in the middle of the lake. The only way to get to Jagmandir is by motor boats which is an exciting way to arrive at the wedding destination. Once we hired motorboats and did an amazing show of fireworks in the middle of water. Another time we completely went out of the way, took permissions from the government and put small jetty powers in the lake to form little fountains. The view was scintillating. We have also arranged performances and dances there by stars like Katrina Kaif, Neha Dhupia and Dia Mirza. Local people

Manek Chowk, City Palace, Udaipur

of Udaipur are very concerned about the maintenance of the lake and this has to be taken care of to respect their sentiments. Of these, I would say that Manek Chowk is perfect for the Sangeet ceremony and here too we have organized performances by celebrities. HRH group, run by the Royal family of Mewar has preserved old heritage properties in Udaipur that offer venues for large scale weddings. Udaipur is also very accessible as direct flights are available and transport in the city is no problem. The other plus point is the infrastructure of the city which is far well equipped and can provide good furniture, light and sound.

The majestic Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur My other favourite in Rajasthan is Jodhpur and it is pr imar ily because of Umaid Bhawan. It is the only art décor palace in India. Three words that best describes the place are - majestic, magnificent and overpowering. His highness of Jodhpur lives in the palace and staying right next to royalty is altogether a different affair. Guests are welcomed with rose petals while their heads are covered by sheets; mounted horses, cavalry and camels are

all there to give their best greetings. It is a throwback into the time of royalty. From nearby Mehranagar fort, you can overlook the whole city, sparkling in blue light. Camels, sand dunes and fires in night- bright marshals and torches lit all over the desert sets the rustic ambience and traditional Rajasthani dance builds the fervour, joy and celebration. Traditional Mangaria performers are gypsy singers that dance and make merr y. For many weddings, we have arranged ceremonies in the middle of the highest dome in Umaid Bhawan. The bride and groom sit under a 185 feet high dome and girls shower flowers on them to make it a moment memorable for lifetime.

What to expect from the venue provider While organizing the wedding, we also expect support from the venue provider in terms of timeliness of arrangements on their part and to be able to get the allocated space at the scheduled time. General cooperation and guidance about local help is very important. The local general manager and staff are most reliable when it comes to sourcing basic and decorative items such

Umaid Bhawan, Jodhpur

as lights, furniture, and local crafts from the destination selected. Apart from that, general behaviour, prompt service and food arrangements are expected. October 2013 GO NOW

Balsamand

Neha Arora How to pick your destination The destination you select plays a vital role in creating a memorable wedding experience. The wedding destination should be exotic, exciting and grand. Undoubtedly, the venue should complement the opulence and stature of the client. We ensure that the destinations we suggest are easily accessible, and with soothing weather. A detailed research of the destination is done by our in house team arranging local support and seeking help to communicate with local people. We suggest destinations that amalgamate naturally with the theme a client wishes to have. For example: For a regal wedding, we suggest Rajasthan. Goa is the best place to get married if one wants his or her wedding to be full of fun and frolic. A couple that admires beautiful scenery could look at Kerela.

done at different places. Balsamand palace has a beautiful natural pond and in the past, we have set up a mandap in the middle of the pond. With a beautiful waterfall in backdrop, the varmala ceremony looks exquisite. They also have lush green lawns and terrace gardens which are ideal for reception parties. Taj Hari Mahal is another good place for royal weddings. Its building is made of pink and red sand stone in Marwari style architecture and a pool party can also be arranged here. Ajit Bhawan in Jodhpur is a heritage property and now has been redone by a designer with very beautiful interiors. It offers specially equipped meeting, conference room and lawn for up to 300 guests. Rajasthan and Goa, the all-time favourites! Right from the people of Rajasthan to the local monuments, every aspect of Rajasthan just makes the venue an apt abode for a grand wedding. Specifically, I recommend weddings in Jaipur and Jodhpur. Marriott has a very nice property in Jaipur for wedding celebrations. It is located near airport and with 43,000 sqft of flexible internal and external spaces, it also offers good space. Jodhpur is another good choice for royal weddings and offers many attractive venues, so different events of celebrations can be 68

serene and enchanting location for a wedding. With a shimmering coastal line and delicious cuisine, the party hot spot of Goa indeed takes the wedding celebrations to a whole new level. The place envelopes in it more than one reason to be crowned as the ultimate wedding destination, be it flight connectivity, beautiful beaches, interesting people, etc. Also the vendors in Goa understand the Indian weddings format and requirements. Thus, local help in Goa is easily available. The Lalit and The Leela in Goa also have beaches which witness a beautiful view of the sunset.

The tropical beaches of Thailand Thailand is certainly an exotic destination with many engaging elements to make the wedding an affair of a lifetime. Also, Thailand is easily accessible as we have good connectivity with the place. Although, we haven’t conducted any wedding in Thailand yet, we are looking forward to it.

Expectations from the hotel

NEHA ARORA “In India I really like Rajasthan and Goa. Rajasthan is a land so diverse and so cultural that it welcomes all its guests and immerses them in the real Indian flavour.”

On ground aspects such as early check in – late check-out, staff flexibility and personalization, sufficient hotel staff to attend to the many guests is a must from any venue. Also, keeping in mind the stature of our esteemed clients we also expect hotels to accommodate any special requirements put forward on behalf of the client. Apart from this local information pertaining to weather, travel and food are some other aspects on which we seek local aide.

Liza Verma The best destination is what suits you The most important criteria for a destination wedding is the personality of the couple and their budget. No matter what your style or budget is there is a perfect place for every couple. For instance, nature enthusiasts may want to tie the knot atop a picturesque mountaintop, whereas beach babies may prefer a more laid-back, tropical location. Couples with deep pockets can choose one of the several romantic cities in Europe or go in for a whimsical and quirky wedding at Disney World. Secondly, one ha s to consider the guests who will be present for the wedding ceremony. Even though the day is about you, it’s also about your guests too. If all your closest friends have toddlers, it will be unfair to request their presence at a safari wedding in South Africa.

Destinations that top the list Finding the perfect destination and venue is the most essential part of any wedding. India has some truly gorgeous and unexplored destinations such as Pondicherr y and Andaman Islands, amongst the regular ones; of course, Udaipur and Goa top the list. Abroad, destinations like Thailand (Hua Hin) and Bali are amazing fun. The most exquisite wedding we planned recently was at the Catherine Palace St Petersburg, Russia. It stands second to none. For designing of this Russian wedding, inspiration was taken from the imperial heritage of Russia, Faberge and the gilded masterpieces collected in nearby gallery, the Hermitage. The focal point of the three day long wedding festivities was the ceremony with guests and the bride arriving in a pretty flotilla of gondolas across the lake before a traditional blessing in the Orthodox chapel (the couple having legally married two days before in London). It was followed by feasting, fireworks, a performance by the Bolshoi ballet, live music from an iconic piano-playing pop star, and dancing that lasted until the small hours of the morning.

Fantastic France I love Hotel Cap Estel in Eze Surmer, France. It is situated on its own two-hectare peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean Sea and is ideal for exclusive and very private weddings. Cap Estel is one of the finest coastal properties in Europe for events, giving exclusivity and

privacy in this beautiful part of the world. They can cater for up to 120 guests. We organized two weddings at Cap Estel last summer, both very different and extremely beautiful. One was a fabulous late summer, three day celebration with only family and close friends of the couple. The wedding day was a wonderful mix of formal celebrations, relaxing by the beach and late night partying, all fuelled by exquisite food and wine. A gourmet brunch on Sunday also allowed guests to unwind with the bride and groom before saying their farewells. The styling was white and ultra-chic with fresh seasonal flowers reflecting the style of the hotel and relaxed ambience of the wedding. Another venue that I like in France is Cap

d’Antibes hotel. The wedding we did there was three days of celebrations. It included a beach BBQ, wedding ceremony and breakfast in a beautiful tent alongside the water’s edge. As it was a family orientated weekend, so to make it enjoyable for all, we packed it with fun games and beach activities. We also did a wedding ceremony and reception at La Plague Jumeaux restaurant. The arrangement was exclusive, intimate and relaxed at a beautifully rustic private beach club in St. Tropez, France. Huge platters of Mediterranean seafood, the family’s own label Rosé and a super-sized Croq en Bouch provided guests with an unrivalled dining experience. It was accompanied with the feel of sand between toes and panoramic views of the Mediterranean.

Support from the venue provider

LIZA VERMA “The most important criteria for a destination wedding is the personality of the couple and their budget. No matter what your style or budget is there is a perfect place for every couple.”

Once we have established the framework of t he wedding event s and k now it s requirements, we are ready to contact hotels and discuss planning specifics. The most important support we expect from the venue provider is easy access to the venue where the wedding is being held. The venue has to be accessible a day prior to the wedding, a working area has to be provided where the basic structures can be built. We can place it at the venue few hours prior to the wedding. Proper entry through service entries and parking for our staff and vehicles has to be organized by the venue while the wedding setup is taking place. As told to SHWETA MITTAL October 2013 GO NOW

One common thread, one exciting pulse allured us, – the energy and vitality each one had to showcase. Come with us, let’s grab a bite, have a guzzle, snap a deal, sniff spice and soak in the irresistible verve of the sizzling neighborhoods on the planet.

One can wallow in nature’s abundance all day here! Only the freshest of produce from farmlands, poultries, orchards and groves find their way into this dynamic storehouse of some of Canada’s most diverse agro-eco repertoire. As we walked across the lanes where fishermen called out loud and heartily to vegetable vendors smiling their day-tostart bargains to the most luscious fruits and berries, bakes and Boulangerie wonders, meats, stakes and cold cuts. At prime bakery destination Premier Moisson our breakfast of fresh, father-soft croissants with maple syrup and honey washed by coffee in bowls fuelled our enthusiasm to explore the vast sections. Farm and garden equipment, Canada’s only olive oil store, organic and boutique wines from the Quebecois vineyards, herbs, jams, syrups, honey and spices that add pep to the multilingual character of the city, endears to the shopping fraternity at all times. 70

“PROST!” They lifted their mega steins of dark Bavarian beer, toasting the Sunday sunshine. The motley group of bikers at the open air Biergarten (beer garden) within this popular market are among the familiar sights celebrating life with festive spirit. A must visit haunt of Muencheners, the array of shopping delights range from fresh bakery goodies, sweets and savories, beer, organic wines and liqueurs, a riot of colourful blooms, collectibles, knick knacks, home ware, toys and yes, those glorious Bavarian mountain

and herb cheeses, Pretzels and handicrafts. This market is for serious home décor enthusiasts too. Wall hangings, floor mats, crockery, glassware, snazzy kitchen utensils and much more allure young couples pushing prams with grandmas drooling over petunias. But the hobnobbing alcoves are the beer garden benches where people relax, talk, joke, guzzle froth, eat a meal, laugh garrulously, read a magazine, stare at other people and wish time away. Formerly a farmers market, it now showcases fine artistic expressions in paintings, lifestyle products, fabrics and seasonal offerings.

Djerba, Tunisiaa

Houmt Souk Market

“Marhaba”! “Le Bes?” The guttural sing-song welcome uplifted us as we stepped into the rickety one-horse buggy that would give us a tour of the coastal promenade bordering the market. Folks in long garbs called Blousa and bright red and maroon caps strutted in and out of the market precincts, the noise and chatter in Arabic and French alien yet musical to our ears. Dazzling and intricate Berber pottery, Tunisian rugs and carpets, large Darbouka -Arabic clay and goat skin drums, miles of spices and condiments, Tunisian wines and liqueurs, olive oil all made merry on the shelves of this north African Island paradise’s lively market. We settled outside a café for some hot ‘shaay’ (tea) and native sweets that almost froze our teeth with their sugar content. Nearby, a group of local Jews played drums and sang along the street, adding a twist of regional fascination to our already fascinating experiences.

Colombo, Sri Lankaa

Odel Lifestyle Market

You get almost into a flurry of haste in the commotion of export-targeted fashion and trend wear here. Ridiculously low prices and world class garments in the latest styles and designs allured us into this swank, stylish market outlet also home to other equally evocative lifestyle products and attractions. The atmosphere is less hurried outside the fashion marquee but shoppers can’t have enough with their arms full of every conceivable outfit.

Enjoying Bavarian Beer, Viktualienmarkt, Munich

Reindeers in gold, Santa Clauses in bright neon pink, Xmas trees in shimmering metallic green and a zillion sparkling shades of Christmas brought us eagerly into Rome’s fabled market with a fountain and cooling climes for company. Xmas decorations at seasonal deals makes it easier for revelers and visitors like us want to indulge and hoard until the next season, but we kept our Euros tucked away until we saw what appealed to us instantly – a stunning little illuminating Christmas tree made of synchronized bulb-lighting and musical programming (pssst!-Made in China, of course!). Salamanca Street Market

The colours and vibrancy grows on you as you stroll through the stalls that pack in the unusual and the poignant. From this hilltop locale one can see far beyond Hobart’s cheerful harbor. You need leisure time to discover the street wares with fair prices and colourful offers. As a street violin concerto welcomed us into the walkways, the ‘Smallest Pancakes in Town’ stall barely allowing us space for our toes, the crowds seesawing into the counter to grab micro mini-sized pancakes decked with spicy pickles. Further down a lady farmer in a Karuba hat offered free tastings of her floral liqueurs with a wide toothy grin, we made it a point to sample enough of the nectarine flavours. Finger puppets, wooden pens, cloth pantomime dolls, Macadamia nuts by the quintal, scarves, stoles, Fijian textiles and most cheeky of them all – a wooden signage boutique headed by a tall and gruff hombre in khakhi shorts pedaling tongue-in-cheek ‘announcements’ on hand carved wooden plaques to tease your senses…’ Drunken Dads’ Corner’, ‘Brain washing station’ ‘Maid in Heaven’…

The frenzy and jet-paced energy is electrifying here. It follows an easy momentum by the day and early evening, but by night it looks like a whipped up chaos of the inviting kind. This stretch-asyou-wallet-permits destination is home to a myriad outlets and boutiques presenting the latest in fashion wear, apparels, part gear, glitzy neon and fluorescent outfits, footwear by the millions, fake jewellery that makes girls go wow. At truly bargain tags the deals are awesome and very competitive. Taipei’s hoi polloi and snazzarazi pile up quality time here to drool over the latest musicon-streets, gizmos, gadgets, amusement junk and most of all, -the hot-n-pipin’ delicacies off the skewers and woks in the adjoining sprawling food court. You queue up into any stall where aromas and flavors entice your senses and you sing along with stinky tofu, pork dices, fried chilli chicken legs, frog legs, egg-n-batter rolls….ice creams and soft beverages tossed off as midnight sparklers. One single destination for visitors and locals for quality products and authentic Mauritian collectibles and curios that endear over time. So you walk past International boutiques to classic jewellery lounges, designer apparel shops up to that corner where Mauritius comes alive. Figurines of naughty Sega dancers, local Creole characters, the beach allure of the island nation, straw hats and caps, sarongs and glitzy beach styles, paintings and wall art, wood and stone art, footwear designs…we could go on and on. But the scenic and calming palm beach fringed exteriors are inviting as you drop anchor on a cool bench with some premium French coffee and yummy pastries for gastronomic company.

The pulse is mercurial as hyper-decibel music blares out of restaurants and lakeside sit-outs, neon and fluorescent names shout out of old buildings, small stalls and shops stocking footwear, hand fans, incense sticks, tea-making accessories, tea ware, crockery, kinky lingerie and sweet somethings, lots of candies and fun snacking add fervor and zest to this lakeside shopping haven. In between we dug into giant egg-n-garlic pancakes, hot mint tea and spicy Beijing noodles. The entire experience was that of discovery with lean Chinese girls swirling and swiggling to belly dancing Arabic beats and fullthroated hulks singing Chinese pop hits straight out of ‘Right Said Fred’ chartbusters. The beer drinking and shuffling on the dance floor went on till early morning, ahem!

Special interest voyages, an unpretentious, informal environment and personalised services are some of the benefits of choosing a yacht over large-scale cruises by RAYNAH COUTINHO

I

f owning a yacht is on your bucket list but you’re not quite in the market for one yet, the SeaDream Yachts experience might be just what you’re looking for. The idea behind the concept is to offer patrons an experience that bears semblance to being aboard a private yacht. As a result, any impositions – down to the dress code that cruises are synonymous with – are done away with.

Exclusivity at its best Sudesh Kishore, President, SeaDream Yacht Club, India spells it out: “The expression ‘yachting’ is not a sentiment about size so much as one about lifestyle aboard the small vessels. Yachting is slow, relaxed and exclusive. Given that we can accommodate 112 guests on a 56-stateroom yacht, there are no crowds onboard. Attire is casual and the ship travels at its own pace, much unlike the hectic itinerary on a cruise. Yachts visit the little ports that cannot accommodate large ships. Yachting voyages include overnight ports. Cruise

ships depart ports once at a given time: 6:30 pm but this is not the case with yachts.” The ships might have limited their cabin inventory but this is by no means an indication of the size of living spaces. Across there are four categories of suites – Owner’s Suite, Admiral Suite, Commodore Suite and Yacht Club Stateroom, suite sizes vary between 195 square feet and 450 square feet. Wondering which of the four offers an ocean view? They all do! SeaDream’s purveyors are also keen that their yacht experience scores over the cruise experience in terms of the kind opportunities offered once at port. “On offer are various packages that can be customised for the individual’s likes and preferences. Whether you are a golf enthusiast, a race car lover, a nature’s person or a food and wine person, SeaDream has voyages to suit everyone,” says Kishore. Moreover, SeaDream simulates the attentiveness of the handful of trusty crew members one might have onboard their own yacht by the fact that there

are 95 crew members on board to cater to your every whim and fancy. World-class F&B is a promise. “We take great pride in offering the most tantalizing of cuisine made from the freshest and exquisite produce. Guests can look forward to an elaborate menu churned out by a team of detail-oriented chefs. Given our experienced Indian chefs on board, Indian guests can expect exquisite cuisine suited to their palette,” he adds. Kishore himself doubles up as the company’s corporate chef, so rest assured that you’re in the best culinary hands. Luxury and exclusivity at its very best, voyages start at `5,00,000 per couple, for a seven night experience in a Yacht Club Stateroom on Deck 2 and go up to `15,00,000 lakhs for a similar duration voyage, in the Owner’s Suite. Other personalised services that come with the package include sleeping under the stars on a Balinese Dream Bed, watching Starlit Movies on deck or visiting the bridge, provided you get clearance from the caption. Make sure to work on your stamina so you can swim from the yacht’s marina.

Easy access Now might be a good time to consider signing up for one of these experiences because there will now be sailings from India. “Prompted by

demand from travel agents in India – who say there is demand – and very loyal Club members, SeaDream will make its debut with a series of voyages in Asia and Northern Australia in late 2013. SeaDream II will sail to Asia after completing her 2013 Mediterranean season. She will arrive in Mumbai, late October from Athens,” says Kishore.

October will see a showcase of the vessel for travel agents, journalists and loyalty club members. From Mumbai, the yacht will sail to Singapore and the Far East, planning to offer 18 unique voyages in the region. Voyages are seven to 15 days long.

“On offer are various packages that can be customised for the individual’s likes and preferences. Whether you are a golf enthusiast, a race car lover, a nature’s a nature’s person or a food and wine person, SeaDream has voyages to suit everyone.”

SeaDream I and SeaDream II, the company’s twin, ultra-luxur y mega yachts already operate five-night to 20-night sailings in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Besides treading Asian waters for the first time, new on the cards are Costa Rica, Panama and Scandinavian region. Here’s what the upcoming line-up looks like: “SeaDream offers yachting voyages in the azure, crystalline waters of the Caribbean. For the first time, SeaDream I will be transiting the Panama Canal to spend several weeks exploring the exotic shores of Costa Rica, through November – December 2013,” Kishore says. SeaDream’s Northern Europe voyages – which will take place between May and August 2014 - offer a mix of mountains, seas, forests and fjords, quaint villages, graceful castles and celebrated Old Town centers. H

ow are your designs influenced by Goa?

Goa has always been a strong influence. When I star ted my minimal approach to fashion, I did not dream that I could successfully translate abstract emotions such as the fresh sea breeze and the crest of a wave into my clothes. Later I went on to give India its very own resort wear line. And all the credit for that goes to Goa. Finally, thanks to Goa and living close to nature, I infused an eco-friendly emotion into my label.

ow through the Resort Line are you introducing the fashion world to Goa? Today there is a blurring between ramp, lounge, red carpet and resort wear. When I put a bikini top with a sari on ramp, it was revolutionary for its time. The same was with the satin sarong. But today the archive of my work has erased the line between resort and lounge or red carpet. We still use a swimsuit to anchor some of the gowns and keep them in place.

s a Goan, what do you think are the prime attractions of this destination that beckon tourists? There are many beaches that attract tourists, especially those tourists from the hinterland who have not seen the sea or who live in a metro and want to enjoy a beach. But apart from the beaches, my favourite places are away from the coast. Panjim, as a city has much to offer. Apart from the obvious visual delights, our Goa State Library can rival any in the world. There is also a strong art, cultural and performance scene in Goa. The same is with the churches. People visit Old Goa but rarely visit the Museum of Christian Art. In the South, there are many beautiful mansions but tourists should also explore the Goa Chitra Museum in Benaulim and restaurants such as Palacios de Deo in Quepem or Nostalgia in Raia. The best advice is to befriend a local and follow their trail around Goa.

our personal recommendations for eating-out in Goa

There are too many restaurants to mention but when I am in the mood to go out I head to Joets in Bogmalo. It is also very close to the airport and makes a perfect ‘Welcome to Goa’ stop as soon as one arrives in Goa.

s a hub of flea markets, which market do you find the best and why?

The Mapusa Market is by far the most

colourful, vibrant and on Fridays the local produce is overwhelming. Anyone can put a mat in the market and sell merchandise on Friday in Mapuca. It is tax free. As a result, one can buy a bunch of bananas from someone’s home garden or a garland of flowers strung at home with local flowers.

our favourite beach and why?

our favourite place to party here?

Bogmalo beach is my favourite because it is small and cosy. Also the added attraction is Joets restaurant whose fabled Goan Choriso stuffed naan is delicious. On Fridays and Saturdays, local musical talent rock! The best parties are in Goan homes where people don’t just sit and drink but play a guitar, violin or the piano. People will sing, dance, feast and be truly merry. But if you want Ibiza in India, there is only one place and that’s Titos in Baga. as told to ANUPRIYA BISHNOI

considerate, gentler and more patient. I believe that men are so busy in their own world that they don’t really take care of their fellow passengers. While I am travelling, I do recline my seat but, very carefully. I do that generally when the meal hours are over and the passenger sitting behind me isn’t uncomfortable,” says Vandana Banerjee, Retail Head, Ayaan. However, when it came to lon g hau l f l i g ht s , women were a bit more charitable, with 46% of lady travellers of the opinion that people should be free to do what they like on long haul flights. Gabrielle Seacy, Director, AktivOrtho, talking on the same, says, “I am lucky that till now I haven’t experienced anyone around me behaving badly while in the flight. But I believe that women in general are calmer and caring. They are mentally prepared for the environment they are going into; hence, they are more organized. I also do recline my seat while travelling but I make sure that the person seated behind me is comfortable. Also, I have seen that the cabin crew puts in a lot of effort to make sure that all the passengers are comfortable.” PHOTO FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSE ONLY. PHOTO COURTESY: JET AIRWAYS

Most of the people recline their seats only during the night, in this case, the research found out that 69% of women said they would recline it at night as compared to 61% of men. Psychologist Dr. Becky Spelman says, “A reclined seat can negatively i mp ac t a p e r s on’s overall flight experience, especially if the person in front is being particularly inconsiderate. There are two general personality types while travelling – ‘Altruistic Soul’, who is considerate of others, and the ‘Selfish Ego’, who wants to ensure their comfort at the expense of others.” Skyscanner’s survey further revealed that more than half of the travellers in the 55+ age bracket said they were least likely to recline their seats on short/long haul flights and when they did, it was mainly during the night-time. Interestingly, the younger generation consisting of 18-24 years old said they would recline their seats only when the person in front did. 66% of women say that they were less likely to recline their seats if the person behind was noticeably pregnant in contrast to 56% of men travellers who were inconsiderate of the same. “I totally agree that women are better behaved than men because they are more
