business traveller mayank pareek: maruti suzuki india
business is all about bonding. incentives make this happen
We catch up with Mayank Pareek, Chief Operating Officer (Marketing and Sales), Maruti Suzuki India to discuss his travel preferences and Maruti’s planning and strategy regarding incentives and conferences.
C
ompany Travel
W it h over 3 8 of f ice s s pr e ad throughout the country and their policy to be work closely with the customers, the company’s executives do a fair amount of travel during the year. Within the company there are three levels of management that travel – top management, senior middle and the sales executives. Pareek himself travels for at least three days of the week within India and once every two months on an overseas trip. In addition, they also have large scale travel organized a few times throughout the year. These include their Annual Dealers Meeting, Annual Suppliers Meeting, Regional Meetings and Incentive based holidays. Naturally all this travel on an individual and group level requires a lot of planning and effort and the company relies on various partners and agents for the same. With the need for travel increasing, it is only natural that the budget allocated for
the same is also on the rise. Pareek clarifies that this is not a matter of concern but “that business is growing and therefore travel is growing”. It is not an area where the company is cost cutting; however, they have initiated a few measures to manage costs such as not staying a night if not needed or going on a tour and completing meetings in a particular region. For instance, “if I have a meeting in Bangalore, then I travel throughout Karnataka, wherever I have work; finish the region and then come back. Though it can be more strenuous, it is more effective”.
TIE UPS They have tie ups with ITC Hotels and Taj Group of Hotels primarily due to their assured quality of delivery and comfort but also because of their network of both budget and luxury hotels spread throughout the country. However it is not dictated to stay at only these properties. Especially, at his level, he may simply opt for another hotel to try it out.
They prefer to remain unaffiliated with any airline and decide more based on convenience and requirements of the day. Says Pareek, “Sometimes I may like to fly to Chennai in the morning and return in the evening and so I can’t then be bothered to stick to a specific airline. It is about convenience and most importantly getting the work done”. He does however clarify that depending on seniority, the entitlements vary and thus a certain section would travel only on budget airlines.
As a Business Traveller “Personally I travel throughout the country. There are 650 districts in India and I would have travelled to over 500. I fly what suits my convenience and often stay at either ITC or Taj or may choose to experience a new property”, say Pareek. “When it comes to flying, I enjoyed the service provided by Kingfisher. Today I prefer both Indigo and increasingly Air India. It should be of course safe and punctual and it makes a huge difference on how warmly you

business traveller in; you want it handled quickly; especially, you are a repeat guest. Other factors that I am sure all business travellers find comforting is a warm and pleasant smile. When you enter the premises and you are recognized by name, always makes you feel good and welcomed. I maintain crazy hours and practically live out of hotels, so other aspects that matter include a good comfortable and clean room and simple food at the coffee shop. Specifically I prefer hotels with a 24hr gym”.

are greeted. For international travels, I go for either Air India or JAL business class. Jet is an airline I am cutting down on, as they seem to never honour their loyalty programme.” Frequently visiting airports, the one key aspect he looks for is a speedy check-in and avoiding “serpentine queues”. He describes the Hyderabad airport as brilliant and is very proud of the Delhi airport. He feels that while people might complain of having built an unnecessary large airport, he finds it designed to meet future demands and growth. Of the worst is the Kolkata airport, where there is room for improvement. Of course, accommodation plays a critical role when staying away from home. Hotels he favours to stay at include ITC Sonar Bangla, Windsor in Bangalore and Taj Lands End in Mumbai. Here again his prime concern is “no irritation at check-in. Typically, I take a morning flight, before 8am and head straight for the meetings without checking in. The day ends at 8pm and then I head to the hotel. After 12hours you don’t want to be hassled at check
Maruti Suzuki India recently held their Annual Dealers Conference in Bali in May with over 800 delegates who attended. Pareek described this as “taking a Barat, where everyone is the dhulla. It is an extremely important annual activity where the company shares plans, discusses concerns and receives and analyses feedback”. This is also a great chance for informal bonding amongst dealers and an opportunity to motivate people. Other destinations travelled to in the past include Istanbul, Athens, Paris and Bangkok. So, why Bali? A big constraint when selecting the destination is the conferencing facility. With an increasing number of delegates attending, they have to ensure a large enough hall, enough hotels and connectivity with India. Before the destination is finalized, a team from Maruti also does a rece of the conferencing facilities to ensure that all requirements are in order. The Bali Nusa Dua convention centre …. was ideal for the purpose. The connectivity with India, though requiring a stopover, was still close enough when compared to places like the US. There were good hotels, within 2km distance from the convention centre. The delegates stayed at Conrad, Laguna and Westin. The main idea reason behind this initiative is to give hard working partners a break and a chance to relax and enjoy. Bali made for an exciting destination as many had not visited it before. Also the city provided amble options to unwind, with beautiful beaches, shopping, water sports and culture and handicrafts. Also a part of the thought process is the size of the location, “business is all about bonding. If you go to a huge city, then they don’t even meet each other, so you pick a contained city. Also it is important for the delegates to have a good time, you can’t just take them to a business city and bring them back”. Usually, the conference itself is planned over two half days concluding at 2pm. The
delegates also get a gala dinner and a musical night. This year, they had KK to enthral the audience. The evenings are kept free to explore the city and spend time with family. While the conference is going on, the company arranges for activities for the families to keep them interested. Depending on the size of your business, some families are hosted while others pay for additional members. This conference is much looked forward to also because of an annual awards night. “The awards criteria and categories are announced in advance and are hotly contested with a monthly score card sent to you; everyone likes to be a winner and they fight for it”, says Pareek. It is a matter of pride and recognition for the hard work done. All the ground logistics and booking is handled by In Air. “They provide highly personalized service and look into all the needs of the travelling delegates. For instance, we have several Jains and In Air organizes Jain food for them. The idea is really to pamper everyone and ensure they have a good time”.
Upcoming Incentive The company is now planning their upcoming incentive trip to Australia. This is a purely performance based trip for only those who qualify and meet the set targets. Usually there are 1 to 2 such trips planned in the year. “We identify a particular marketing challenge and set the criteria and define sales targets for dealers across India”, says Pareek. He personally is involved more in this process of identifying the growth target and principles for target and sales. Next month, they have 200 people heading to Australia (about 100 dealers) for a 10 day paid vacation. The entire holiday is hosted by the company which includes your airfare and accommodation – depending on your level or business size, you qualify for a certain number of hosted pax. Pareek believes that this is the “most effective way of performance enhancement. Most of our dealers are multi-millionaires and can afford to travel overseas on their own. But qualifying for this is a matter of pride. Also we make the trip extremely personal and try and take care of things which otherwise they independently may find tough to organize; such as we plan to take them to the Sydney Cricket Ground”. This is a dealer owner incentive trip; they also have plans for Dealer GM, sometimes service managers or parts managers conferences. by Priyaanka Berry June 2013 go now

H
ow has your journey been so far?
It has been an over whelming journey full of hard work and determination. In the beginning it was challenging but exciting at the same time. The journey which started from a garage, now has carved its own niche.
How frequently do you travel for business? I typically travel twice a month on average, but the past few months I have had 3 or 4 trips each. I watch for trends so I can anticipate changes and know how to maintain our discipline in the face of external pressures. I visit clients, prospects, dealers & distributors with employees and travel to discover the new innovative technologies abroad. I belong to the Business Roundtable, where I am able to interact with other professionals through business travels.
Where do you travel the most for business? It varies for each project, and the vast majority of it is domestic travel. I’ve been to South Africa, Europe, Caribbean and Latin America, and in all parts of India. There is a market de-
business traveller mand for the innovative products in the form of an explicit customer demand or implicit market opportunities. So considering the demand and the current scenario, we are also increasing our main thrust on R&D; for which I prefer to travel out for seminars and find new innovative technologies; also deteriorating Standards of Water is a problem all over the world, so being the Water Man of India I travel to educate the customers globally about KENT’s technology and innovations and get business from all over the world.
How much does travelling excite you? Do you love travelling? Yes, I love travelling a lot and to appreciate the incredible natural inheritance and to maintain my physical and mental well-being I spend time with my family and often go for distant destinations.
According to you which is the best destination for business in India and abroad? That is the best destination for business where you can make a bang on masses and your target audience. And KENT RO Health products can be catered to anybody all over the world. So, from business point of view and Water Purification Industry, India, SAARC countries, Middle East countries including Iraq, Dubai, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Kenya in Africa all have very high potential and we are already present in these destinations.
Do you have any specific preferences while travelling for business? Yes, I prefer travelling on Virgin Airlines or on Lufthansa. In terms of food I am a very simple person, i.e. why my taste buds are also plain. Though my first preference is always homemade gourmet but yes I like pure vegetarian Indian food.
What would you say about business facilities in India in comparison to rest of the world? I don’t think that India is lacking behind in any of the terms in comparison to abroad. India is the fastest growing market for small and medium businesses (SMBs) in Asia Pacific and seeing the potential many MNCs are eyeing a piece of the pie to grow its business. India is too big a market to be ignored and the most dynamic markets with tremendous potential.
Is there any particular hotel you prefer staying with when travelling for business? I prefer either Hyatt Hotels or Taj Group of Hotels, because of the high end facilities which can meet my requirements and comfort.
According to you which is the upcoming MICE destination in India and Abroad? Organizing meetings, conferences, incentives somewhere outdoor always adds an exciting layer to annual business meetings and conferences, transforming them from boring, dull all-work-no-play get together to something pleasurable. With its rich heritage, vibrant culture and its natural beauty, India is an attractive MICE destination and Neemrana or Bhiwadi has ample options for organizing these off sights. For abroad I would say Singapore is bustling with opportunities.
Recently where did you travel for business? How was your experience? My recent jaunts for business within this month were Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Ludhiana. The experience was quite good as these networking travels let you meet the stakeholders and know the problems on ground level.
What do you think a hotel should have to serve perfectly to a business traveller? Out of the very basic things, I would say a good, fast internet Wi-Fi connection is a must in each room of the hotel which helps the traveller stay in touch with work back home.
With its rich heritage, vibrant culture and its natural beauty, India is an attractive MICE destination and Neemrana or Bhiwadi has ample options for organizing these off sights. For abroad I would say Singapore is bustling with opportunities.
I prefer either Hyatt Hotels or Taj Group of Hotels, because of the high end facilities which can meet my requirements and comfort. 5 things without which you would not leave for any trip? The most essential things that I always carry along when out on trips, are; a first aid; my medicines and a good amount in my plastic money.
For you, travelling and work go hand in hand, how do you manage to take out time for leisure? I know the art of balancing my life. To maintain harmony, I keep my personal life out of professional life. Beyond travelling and work I just have two passions – sleeping and daily meditation. I also love to potter around the garden in my farmhouse on the outskirts of Delhi.
Which destination did you find the most comfortable for business? Comfort is always there in your own country. Roorkee near Haridwar is one such place which I consider as my comfort zone for work where we have set 3 state of the art manufacturing facilities.
Which airport would you not mind spending extended hours at? I think your experience with any of the airports depend on which terminal you are in. Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 3 is one of my favourites. Philadelphia and Los Angeles airports are hobbled by outdated infrastructure, overcrowding, chronic delays, and demoralized staff.
Any tips or suggestions regarding business travel that you would have learnt through your journeys? Always carry a First Aid and a good amount in your plastic money. Travel as light as possible; need not to over pack the bags. Make sure your passport isn’t expiring. by Nikita chopra June 2013 go now

eating a jet lag is possible if given careful consideration the first few times, after which one gets accustomed to the pattern. A traveller needs to know the difference between flying to the far- East as opposed to the West. I try my best to land on a Sunday in any case so that I have enough time to get acquainted with the city I’m in. Cathay Pacific has proven to be a reliable choice for international travel and Jet Airways suits me the best within India. Long queues at airports can materialize unexpectedly, so I make it a point to keep buffer time within my schedule for any such contingencies.”
‘Local mobile connection helps’ Rajan Gupta Managing Director, Enco Engineers Combine Pvt. Ltd. (Enco Engineers Combine Pvt. Ltd. are leading manufacturers of high precision sheet metal parts and assemblies for automobile, white goods and engineering industries.)
“I
always prefer to stay at a hotel recommended by the people I am visiting. They know their city much better than any travel guide, so why not! Getting a local mobile connection always helps since a breakdown in communication or the complications of international roaming must be avoided for a hassle free trip as per my experience. While I’m not partial to any particular airline, I do get my trips planned in a manner that ensures that I get the best deal on flights while minimizing the transit stops. Keep business trips restricted to not more than one day over the number essential for work to give room for any sudden changes in plan. Travelling means putting yourself in an alien atmosphere and the sooner you familiarize yourself with it, the smoother it gets.”

ravel has become a way of life for me and over the years, I have understood ways in which I can get maximum returns from the time invested into flying between home and work. Communication gaps can cause major obstructions, so I look for options that allow me unlimited internet access at all times as well as connectivity through instant messaging and email services. Frequent flyer miles are extremely useful, especially when it comes to priority check in, lounge services and extra baggage allowances. If you spend an extended period of time in one city often, do try to build a social life there in order to ensure that your stay doesn’t concentrate solely on work. Contrary to popular belief, fluency in English cannot always substitute familiarity with the local tongue. Beyond this, it is also important to understand the customs and conventions of the people around you. I make it a point to keep one wallet for the UAE and another for India and have found it to be a helpful control mechanism.”

Travelling to different cities gives us the opportunity to explore the city, its culture, its people and their many ways. I was able to sample different cuisines, visit famous places and live in an environment starkly different from my home city which was all extremely refreshing and enriching. As per my opinion, such cross cultural exchanges are essential for growth within the workplace and can bring to the fore certain practices and habits that one may not be able to imbibe from within one town alone.”

speak a few words of Italian, French and Spanish so I’ve never really faced much of a language barrier. For exceptional cases, however, I’d recommend using Google Translate. Travelling abroad for work, needs to be planned in a manner entirely different from a holiday, but without forgetting that the human body needs some time to heal and adjust to a hectic environment, regardless of the location. I like to pick hotels that are closest to my appointments. Also, I have found some boutique hotels to be much more exciting than large hotel chains. I would recommend Kube in Paris to corporate travellers and can vouch for the benefits of picking connecting flights that involve airports that aren’t hard to navigate across. I carry only a pre-decided amount of cash while travelling and conduct other transactions online or using my plastic money and find that this method enables me to keep track of my expenses without getting caught up in currency exchange of large denominations.”
‘Eating out brings host of ailments’
“I
travel beyond my city for work on a weekly basis. Although I feel that the impact of corporate travel can change in many ways with age, it can and must be managed judiciously. Time difference can be a problem but not an obstruction to productivity, if only one allows the body sleep and activity without any room for lethargy. I carry my work out gear with me and squeeze in a spot of exercise when awake. For both personal and work related travel, I look for competitive pricing in airline fares. Travelling light is certainly not overrated; extra baggage can rarely do one good”

ork can cause me to travel for up to five days per week. Such rigorous movement is beneficial in many aspects, but people with schedules packed to maximum capacity need to pay special attention to a few factors that others may take for granted, lest they compromise on health and efficiency. Food can be a significant concern, since eating out for a majority of the week when combined with a tight calendar can bring a host of ailments to the table. Sleep is another necessity that can evolve into a luxury in some situations. Tackling these two can make a huge difference to the quality of continued travel. I prefer flying with Indigo within India simply because they are always on time and have an array of convenient options to pick from while booking.”
am a firm believer in the habit of carrying one’s official laptop and purchasing a local mobile connection when out for work. Upgrade your ticket using frequent flyer miles if you are boarding a long flight. Do remember that even official travel can be rejuvenating. In fact, I feel much more energized when I get back to my office after a business trip! I am currently spending a month at my firm’s London office and the experience of working with people from different work cultures has been rather enriching. Time bound work does get affected if you are in a different time zone, but careful management and coordination with the team can really help in such situations.” by shirin rai gupta June 2013 go now

BKC: Bright and burgeoning

T
hat Mumbai’s Central Business District is no longer Nariman PointChurchgate-Fort is old news. Visitors and the city’s working class have witnessed the dramatic shift from South Mumbai to fragmented CBDs its northern, central and suburban areas. BKC is one among these. It has occupied notable pride of place because – it has two glitzy hotels and two cricket clubs driving publicity; it boasts large exhibition grounds – possibly the city’s biggest, infrastructure that does not disappoint and loads of headliner projects. Several big businesses have shifted base in its favour and corporate office blocks coming in are an indicator of more to come. There’s also an American School and a Dhirubhai Ambani International School in the area. As the name suggests, it is wedged between the suburbs of Bandra and Kurla. “The migration of quality tenancy from Nariman Point to BKC has been driving the attractiveness of the location. Developer is drawn to it even though the land prices are high, as they can take advantage of the Global FSI to construct more and realize returns on their investments. The development currently is sustainable and should continue to be so given that this location has been projected as the financial hub across the globe. Further, with the proposed redevelopment of Dharavi in the vicinity, the BKC story can continue to be sold,” says Ramesh Nair, Managing Director – West, Jones Lang LaSalle India.
Government gyaan The development of BKC was first planned nearly 40 years ago – and here’s an interesting piece of news: According to MMRDA, the area was intended to be the “first in the series of growth centers being planned in Greater Mumbai aimed at easing up the congestion of offices in South Mumbai. It provides an alternative location where future growth of offices and commercial activity can be absorbed and where some of the existing activities from South Mumbai can be relocated.” It was intended to grab the spotlight from South Mumbai. Furthermore, MMRDA press statements say that of the 350-odd hectares allotted to the project, the E-block, containing an urban plaza and park over an area of 22,500 sq mtr is up and ready. What’s under development now, and is perhaps the most significant is the G-Block where new the big businesses are coming in. June 2013 go now

business destination Commerce on a climb Businesses are pouring into the area. Much of it driven by its central location – an increasingly important consideration with commute durations becoming a big consideration for any decision for Mumbai’s residents. “Given the location of BKC in the centre of ever northward bound Mumbai, its importance keeps growing. Further, there is a strong focus on increasing the productivity of employees; a strategic locational advantage is driving the location from a HR perspective,” explains Nair. Diamond-traders’ association Bharat Diamond Bourse has taken up a 20-acre trading centre in the complex. It has already attracted 50 diamond traders and it handles 60 per cent of diamond exports from India. Traders gravitated to the area for its high security – it boasts 2,500 cameras and nearly 400 security personnel. Members of the association say that facilities are more than satisfactory: it comes complete with a customs clearance centre – for rough diamonds and exports - banks, trading halls, conferencing and cafeteria on campus. For traders, the new facility also means single-window deals. The American Consulate has taken up a sprawling space in the area. The New Zealand Consulate also moved its office from South Mumbai to BKC. Banks that have set shop here include ICICI, IDBI, Citibank, Bank of India, JP Morgan, Godrej BKC

“Sectors that are looking at entry include more consulates, trade commissions/ bodies, niche FMCG and front offices of manufacturing companies.” BNP Paribas, Dena Bank Punjab National Bank and Standard Chartered. NABARD and SEBI are here too. Healthcare business has found its way to BKC too with the Asian Heart Institute. There’s more to come. “Pharmaceuticals private equity funds, technology companies have already made a beeline for BKC. Sectors that are looking at entry include more consulates, trade commissions/bodies, niche FMCG and front offices of manufacturing companies,” says Nair.
MICE hub Meetings and exhibitions are already flocking to the centrally-located zone. Exhi-
bition-spaces include the MMRDA exhibition grounds. Besides hosting the city’s biggest trade and consumer expos, these four open plots – that collectively add up to a little over 150,000 sq mtr - also play host to the Mumbai’s biggest entertainment gigs – Pitbull, Guns & Roses, Iron Maiden and Shakhira have all performed here. Meanwhile, the 436-room Trident Bandra Kurla Complex offers six spacious meeting rooms, while the year old, 302-room Sofitel BKC offers variously sized meeting rooms as well as banquet halls. With the business traveller at the centre of both hotels’ plans and promotions, they’ve got special deals on breakfast meetings and express-lunch
business destination promises in place. Also, there’s also more to come: Las Vegas-based MGM Hotels has two hotels planned for the location. Interestingly, the recent Ambani brothers patch-up might also have positive implications on BKC. A 8,00,000 sq ft plot which was under jurisdiction because an additional 8,00,000 sq ft was allotted to Mukesh Ambani-led RIL by MMRDA (6,99,000 sq ft for a convention centre and the rest to be exploited commercially), only to be challenged in court by Anil Ambani-led RCIL could now open up. RIL was initially in talks with Wadhwa to develop the convention centre and commercial space. Also popular for social activities is the Mumbai Cricket Association’s 14-acre recreation centre.
Homes and offices There are oodles of state-of-the-art corporate space coming up as well. Earlier in the year, the Godrej Group announced a landmark commercial development in the area – scheduled to be ready by 2015. “We are very excited to launch Godrej BKC, our commercial project at Bandra Kurla Complex. Godrej BKC will adhere to the highest standards of design and sustainability and will be a state-of-the-art commercial building. Once completed, we hope Godrej BKC will be a landmark structure in Mumbai and India’s leading commercial property,” says

Pirojsha Godrej, Managing Director & CEO, Godrej Properties Godrej BKC occupies a corner plot. Godrej Properties and Jet Airways have partnered for this development and will share the profits from the development in a 50:50 ratio. Of a total saleable area of 1.3 million square ft at Godrej BKC, 161,460 sq ft of carpet area will house the new Jet Airways headquarters. Godrej BKC will offer a floor plate of 70,000 sq ft. Another example is One BKC, a project by the Wadhwa Group, scheduled to be up and running by 2014. The project – that is selling the proposition of increased productivity through world-class features – will offer 1,450 sq ft, 3,500 sq ft, 7,500 sq ft, 30,000 sq ft, 80,000 sq ft office spaces. Top-of-the-line residences are also mushrooming in the area. Perhaps the most notable is Sunteck’s Signature Island, which houses only duplex apartments that will offer its residents the works - from temperature
Buyers block According to Nair, “A large portion of the area is still developing and there is plenty of scope for further modernization. Investors can look at the assets from a long term perspective and the preferred mode of entry should be to buy. This is further reinforced by the fact that there are limited developments favouring strata selling coming up in the next two or three years.”.
controlled indoor pools to hi-tech concierge services. Dheeraj Realty has a project, called Insignia, planned here that will have a variety of options – anything from a two- to five-BHK apartment, besides treating them to an open-to-the sky swimming pool. It also has a business centre. Rustomjee’s Season’s property will offer three- and four-BHKs. And these represent just the most widely publicized projects. There’s hosts of smaller developments in the area as well.
A stone’s throw Nobody’s all work and no play. At the moment, besides its two hotels, BKC has a limited number of dining and entertainment options – although a notable one is Hakkassan sister-restaurant Yauatcha. Head here for the most authentic dim sums you’re likely to find in Mumbai. Of course, you could simply head over to Bandra West – that’s about 30-minutes away during peak hours and about 15-minutes away when you can breeze through – to dine at Hakkasan or any of the Queen of the Suburbs’ myriad eateries, pubs, bars and nightclubs. Things can only get more interesting. A few areas need improvement and there is much of the story to be told. Nair says that focus should be drawn to affordable dining and public transport facilities – BKC, although accessible from both Bandra and Kurla railway stations remains a little way out unless you’re driving there. At the moment companies are setting up private transport facilities to shuttle employees. The Bharat Diamond Bourse, for example, has set up a bus facility to attract traders. The area already gets several pats on the back for its security (one can thank the presence of the American Consulate and NSE for that). Nair says that a good move would be for MMRDA should lower the asking rates during the next auctions for land to invite more bidders to kick start and promote further development in the location without compromising on the quality of developments which may be resorted to by developers due to overly capital-intensive projects. As Nair points out, “Upcoming retail centers and hotels, upscale residential apartments will make BKC a self-sustainable hub.” So whether it’s meetings in Mumbai you’ve got in mind, or you’re looking to buy, lease or rent an office space, give this up and coming CBD a good, hard look. by raynah coutinho

noida
A world class city
Once known as Delhi’s backwaters, the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority – better known by its acronym NOIDA – today reigns as Asia’s largest industrial town and a pulsating hub for multinational companies while also powering the Indian real estate renaissance.
P
art of an urbanization thrust during the Emergency era in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), NOIDA was established in 1976 as an administrative unit of the state government. Over the last three decades or so, the city – now part of the National Capital Region (NCR) -- has morphed into a major revenue earner, attracting investments from a galaxy of national and global conglomerates. So much so that the city’s successful business template is today being replicated across UP with a proactive development agency working to achieve high growth rates for business, industry and commercial ventures.

A Hub for business NOIDA is a major hub for multinational firms, outsourcing IT services, large software and business process outsourcing (BPO) companies. It hosts the head office of the Software Technology Park, which was established by the government to bolster the country’s software industry. Due to its Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status, and its proximity to the national capital city of Delhi, the city has emerged as a crucible for global automobile giants like Escorts, Honda-SIEL, Moriroku Technology and New Holland Tractors and global manufacturers like Alstom, LG, Samsung, Ericsson. The NOIDA Film City – the nerve center for
major studios and premier news channels like Zee News, NDTV, TV Today group, CNNIBN, CNBC, INDIA TV – is also situated here. NOIDA’s commercial activities have ratcheted up further with the development of a spate of shiny new malls and multiplexes. Shopping arcades like The Great India Place, Garden Galleria [in construction mode] The Mall of India [under construction] Centrestage Mall, sector 18, The Spice World Mall, Shopprix Mall, Sab Mall and Atta Market showcase national and international products and services. With a sizeable global presence, the city is also a major centre for the Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, Exhibitions (MICE)
business destination industry earning bragging rights for building northern India’s largest conference and exhibition venue -- the India Expo Centre and Mart (IECM) -- and the Delhi International Expo Centre. The IECM will soon be launching a 400room five-star hotel on its premises by 2015. More than 6,000 manufacturing units call NOIDA their home according to the NOIDA Authority with a similarly expansive growth witnessed in the residential and commercial space. The city’s extension – Greater NOIDA – has today become a hub for business, with new projects like the Taj Expressway, Formula 1 circuit and the SEZs becoming a magnet for regional and global players. NOIDA’s growth is powered by sectors like IT, ITES, auto, oil majors and back-end service providers. It is a lucrative business destination for an investor due to the broad spectrum of companies coming in and the IT, KPO, BPO and Consulting sectors seeing phenomenal growth. Better connectivity to Delhi and excellent metro connections also means that talent acquisition is easier. “With the opening up of the new Taj Expressway, there’s a lot of potential movement of leisure travelers to NOIDA which is a boost to the local hospitality sector,” elaborates Sonica Malhotra, Director MBD Group, which owns Radisson Blu MBD, the city’s first five-star hotel. “With the proposed airport in the pipeline, the business prospects and activities in the area will become bigger and better. The city’s environment is very conducive to new industries, and there’s a lot of infrastructural support for the same. The city also has a huge positive horizon and potential,” opines the hotelier. Malhotra adds that while nobody could predict outcomes a few years ago, as a hotelier she was confident that NOIDA would blossom as a prime location for both residential and commercial projects. “Today, we are seeing many more hospitality projects coming up or announcing launches as this is an ideal location for ancillary services thanks to the large numbers of business and residential traffic,” she explains. City planners iterate that NOIDA scores strongly on three parameters. Its competitive commercial land rates (lower than Delhi or NCR’s other satellite towns like Gurgaon) both in terms of rentals and outright buys, its infrastructure and its civic amenities which are developing in consonance with its exponential growth. “The development across NOIDA and its twin township Greater NOIDA has taken
place in a planned and phased manner. The city’s excellent connectivity through the DND Toll road, or the Greater Noida Expressway means that one can reach NOIDA within 20-25 minutes from most parts of Delhi,” elaborates Anil Saxena who established his IT companies in the city a decade ago.
Realty Sector NOIDA’S real estate market has become a focal point for the housing industry in northern India due to its proximity to Delhi and enhanced connectivity with the rest of the NCR through a strong logistic network. With a solid bedrock of prominent factors including good job opportunities, world-class housing options, good infrastructure and entertainment centers, NOIDA is reckoned to be a prominent residential and investment destination. With a lot of developmental initiatives being undertaken by the NOIDA authority, NOIDA is being considered the second best planned city after Chandigarh. And it is not
tionally reputed builders, infrastructure, land acquisition risk, etc. Improving infrastructure, fast connectivity and an upward spiral in the demand for affordable, mid- and luxury housing segments augur well for NOIDA’s future development. The frenetic pace at which major builders and developers are launching large housing and township projects, and the equally zestful response by corporate houses, institutions and individuals in snapping up the properties here, are instructive of the fruitful investment opportunities in the city. A number of major developers like Era Landmarks, Vardhman, Supertech, Antriksh, Amrapali, Ajnara, Logix, Ansal, Unitech, Omaxe, Parsvnath Developers, Earth Infrastructures, ATS Infrastructure, Assotech, Paramount, etc., have also marked their presence in NOIDA with a slew of high-end projects. According to realty consultants, NOIDA is a great place to invest in real estate due

The working class is increasingly seeking out the city as the best destination for seeking its return on investment (ROI), inform city consultants. According to a 2012 Cushman and Wakefield report, NOIDA saw the highest number of new units launched in the NCR. The city has also replaced Mumbai as the secondbest realty destination, according to a ranking by real estate data firm Qubrex. The rankings were based on eight parameters – supply and demand, likely price appreciation in three years, emerging connectivity, potential growth in economic activity, na-
to expanding job opportunities, businesses, migrations, investment tools etc which are expected to be doubled by 2014. “Upcoming urban conglomerates in NOIDA and Greater NOIDA will also have seamless connectivity with major industrial towns like Aligarh, Mathura and Agra. Safe, shorter travel time and the accessibility in the region will accelerate land development along the Yamuna Expressway (erstwhile Taj Expressway) in a planned manner for commercial, industrial, institutional amusement and residential purposes,” says a senior official with the Ajanara Group, a premier city-based builder. pediments. However, the upcoming supply of hotels in Noida constitutes to about 3,350 keys over the next five years, with a major concentration along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and is likely to feature some major luxury brands such as St. Regis and Starwood’s W, inform hoteliers. Within NOIDA, a majority of the hotel inventory is dominated by the mid-scale, which comprises almost 31 per cent. This is followed by 30 per cent from upper-upscale segment. Minority contribution is from the budget segment, with 18 per cent. “During 2012, Noida recorded occupancy of 65 per cent, registering a year on year growth of two per cent. This can be attributed to the fact that Noida has seen little or no competitive increase in inventory but the demand in this micro market has been consistently growing. Noida has recorded a market wide ARR of ` 5,341 and a significant increase of five per cent, over the previous year,” says Deepak Prakash, a city-based realtor.

preciating at a steady 30% each year, adds the Ajnara spokesperson, riding on the great infusion of foreign investment, thanks to world class facilities in health, education and entertainment. NOIDA is also seeing further development of various townships, more commercial headquarters, shopping malls, world-class theaters and a lot of infrastructure. Also, there are a number of tourism and entertainment projects under development in and around Noida. NOIDA’s neighboring township – Greater NOIDA – for instance, boasts of world-class facilities such as the proposed Night Safari, a sports city which features a Formula 1 race track, a world-class golf course, a cricket stadium, a hockey arena and a 10,000 - sq feet MC Mary Kom Academy. One of the most attractive features of Greater NOIDA township is its golf course, developed and managed by Jaypee Greens on over 400 acres. The town28

ship is also building Gautam Budh University and an NRI township. Such developments, predict analysts, will lead to the NOIDA region becoming a lucrative micro-market.
Hospitality Industry NOIDA boasts of star-rated hotels like Radisson Blu MBD, Park Plaza, Fortune Inn Grazia, Nirula’s, Mosaic and Ansal Plaza. The city’s gastronomic map is also pretty vibrant with eateries like Made in India (Radisson Blu MBD) serving award-winning Indian cuisine and Nirula’s, Mc Donalds, Pizza Hut and Dominos catering to fast food fans. The city’s dining spectrum also includes eateries offering Chinese, Mexican, Arabic, Mediterranean and fusion food. However, experts reckon that the development of hotels has been tardy in the city as quite a few developers pulled out of their proposed hotel projects due to political im-
The overarching reason for NOIDA’s exponential growth has been its connectivity with Delhi through the following: DND Flyover: It is India’s first 552-meter long main BOT Bridge Project. The eight-lane link across the river Yamuna has three minor bridges and an eight-lanes approach road on the embankment providing a very fast access to South Delhi. Metro connectivity: The Metro has energized commuting to and from Noida providing a crucial link to East Delhi and Central Delhi. NOIDA- Greater NOIDA E xpres s w ay : T h i s 23 - k m, s i x- la ne h i g hw ay connecting NOIDA to Greater Noida is under expansion to Taj Economic Zone, International Airport and Aviation Hub proposed to be constructed along the Yamuna Expressway (Taj Expressway). The Yamuna Expressway: The route connects two vital destinations of national and international importance – the capital city of Delhi and the tourist hub of Agra. Both these regions generate high traffic and power the region’s economic development. The project will also accelerate overall development of the region as it is coming up along the proposed Taj Economic Zone and Taj International Hub Airport easily accessible from Delhi, NOIDA and Greater NOIDA. by NEETA LAL

pampering the frequent traveller
exceeding guests’ expectations Interacting with a number of regular business travellers we understood what really makes them tick, soak in a few words of wisdom borne out of experience and gain insight into the real meaning of working around the clock.
A
t the Inter Continental Miami Hotel, guests in the lobby can call up the drink menu and flag down a server to order using a touch screen on their coffee tables. The Park Hyatt Tokyo and Park Hyatt Seoul gives guests free access to over 2,300 international newspapers on their smart-phones or tablets using the hotel’s WiFi network and an app called PressReader. Hotels around the world are delighting guests and exceeding their expectations in multifarious ways. And it seems Indian hotels aren’t too far behind in the sweepstakes. In fact one of the most sharply distinguishable business travel trend in the Indian hotel industry this year, say trade gurus, is ‘personalization’. This omnibus concept may cover an entire gamut of services. From organizing “jogging companions” for the guests (for a five am sprint!) to a specific room fragrance to mattresses of a particular thread count, tailormade diets or work out timings, room lay outs and amenities, special pillows, specific fruits, teas/coffees and minibars chockfull of preferred goodies, the guests’ whim is increasingly becoming the hotels’ command. Apparently, the savvy New Age business traveler and his pernickety preferences are fuelling this trend. Trade studies reveal that a business traveler spends maximum time at the hotel whether it’s during meetings or afterwards to relax. Thus, for him, a hotel transcends being a business accommodation to become ‘a home away from home’. Personalization has thus become a focal point for hotel services and a cookie-cutter approach no longer cuts it. But what is personalization? “Personalization lies in trying to make the customer feel that they’re indeed special and that the hotel has

been able to go beyond a regular experience that recognizes them. It makes the guest feel special. In other words, “the hotel treats you as if you’re the only customer they have,” according to Chintan Patel, Director, real estate and hospitality services, Ernst & Young. According to Sanjay Sharma, General Manager, Westin, Sohna & Westin Gurgaon, personalizing experiences can begin with the simple task of ensuring that your business guest gets his favorite newspaper. Or the hotel may exceed their expectations by understanding their food and beverage preferences. “For example, as a hotel you might know that your guest prefers coffee with their breakfast but to know which –
Latte, Mocha, Cappuccino, Espresso – is what will give you an edge,” he explains. Starwood Hotels and Resorts’ brand initiative ‘Global Personalization System (GPS)’ for instance, helps hotel staff know the guests at a personal level. “This knowledge empowers us to drive experiences that can ensure top of the mind recall for us from our guests,” elaborates Sharma. By leveraging this bench strength of its parent company Starwood Hotels and Resorts, adds the hotelier, their organization is able to create a competitive edge that clearly distinguishes it in the hospitality landscape. This sentiment finds a resonance with Manish Nambiar, Manager, Kempinski
travel trends Ambience Hotel, Shahadra who opines that personalization is key to a repeat clientele. “The prototype of a business traveller has changed phenomenally in recent times. His profile is diverse and more varied, so the hotel staff has to be culturally sensitive too and this raises the bar even further,” informs Nambiar. Kempinski, for instance, offers a Comfort Menu in its rooms that allows guests to choose between different types of bed sheets (pure cotton, satin, linen, silk), mattresses, duvet and pillows. Flowers and fragrances are also customized according to guests’ choice. For single lady travelers, the hotel offers a dedicated range of bathroom amenities (soap, shampoo, shower gel,

Also on offer is a 24-hours breakfast as many business travelers come into the country from different time zones. Personal trainers and diet plans are also planned by the hotel’s wellness section upon request. “Guests these days can be very demanding,” explains Oliver Martin, General Manager, The Claridges Hotel, “And price no longer defines value. “The personalized experience brings value and the more personalized services you offer, the more you attract the client to come back to you. This trend is the future of travel.” future of travel and the faster you get it right, the more you are prepared for the future.” A corollary of this trend, however, adds Martin, is that it is pushing the industry towards the use of higher technology, which is in itself is a good thing and will be a gain for the consumer as well as the supplier. However, Martin is quick to add that providing such services comes at a price including ample obstacles such as investing in equipment and extensive training to the employees. The Claridges, for instance, has invested in toasters, coffee machines and microwaves which are installed in some rooms upon request. “The trend is getting more entrenched with the discovery of novel and unique ways to wow the guest,” explains The Oberoi, Gurgaon spokesperson. “From a simple recognition by name to personal details being taken care of in the room and extensive instructions for special events, we’re constantly innovating and improvising. This not only delights our guests but also
helps the hotel win a guest for life and create new benchmarks for hospitality services.” At The Oberoi, Gurgaon, for instance, the long-stay guests (seven nights or more) are indulged in monogrammed bathrobes, personalized linen and special turn down amenities that include a picture/logo symbolic to the guest/ company profile/ children being printed on edible chocolate and placed in the rooms. The Oberoi Patisserie and Delicatessen also customizes birthday cakes, wedding sweets and chocolates as per request. Services may even be tailored to suit nationalities. Deepak Jha, Director of Finance, Radisson Blu Hotel Greater Noida says that as his hotel gets a major chunk of its clientele from Japanese and Korean companies, they provide in-house Japanese and Korean interpreters as well. The hotel’s specialty Pan-Asian cuisine restaurant ‘Satin’ specially caters to travelers from this Asian region. Radisson Blu also offers exclusive concierge service, enriched and complemented with

personalized VIP services, dining room, private parking and sunbathing terraces. “Our one-touch service is designed to cater to the guests’ special needs in order to make them feel at home. We also offer our guests a late check out facility, pick and drop from airports, welcome drink upon arrival and gifts on special occasions,” states Jha. In addition, Radisson Blu also provides a ‘grab-and-run’ facility wherein the guests can get their breakfast packed and head out to work early in the morning. Javed Ali, Vice President & General Manager, Radisson Blu Plaza Delhi opines that as service is an intangible offering, a personal touch is what makes the guests’ experience memorable. It helps to

customize offerings for guests whose needs may differ, depending on the purpose of their visit (business, leisure, conference, etc). These preferences do also take on a more personal note, in terms of dietary, culinary, aesthetic and similar considerations. “A ‘Yes I Can’ attitude is the service philosophy that we follow. A key element of this philosophy is the ‘Make it Right policy’, which helps us deliver our guarantee of 100% guest satisfaction. As we receive guests from all over the world, skills in assisting and communicating with guests from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds form an important component of the training imparted to all our team members,” adds Ali. The hotelier is of the view that if used appropriately, technology can help the hotel deliver personalized services, be it digital
travel trends pictures to help in guest recognition, or computerized guest history systems to remember guest preferences. Similarly web-enabled reservation systems enable guests to view various rooms and hotel amenities by means of a virtual tour on the hotel’s website, in advance, so that they can make a selection that is appropriate for their needs. Large corporate accounts at Radisson Blu Delhi are given direct access to the hotel’s reservation system, whereby they can by-pass the hotel’s conventional reservations office and make their bookings directly on the hotel’s reservation system and avail preferential tariffs. Trade pundits predict that a combination of factors – including slowing economic

growth, an increase in the supply of hotel rooms and growing competition from foreign operators – will further entrench the personalization trend. Many of the best luxury and ultra-luxury hotels from all over the world are foraying into the Indian market. Around 20 luxury hotel brands are expected to be under development in the next three years in India, experts point out. The existing hotels will therefore be competing with these global luxury establishments. The US-based hotel conglomerate, Starwood, for instance, is bringing its ultra luxe brand – St Regis – to India in 2015. The township of Noida will thus boast of the first St Regis property in India with 200 rooms. The brand also has plans for two more hotels in the country – in Mumbai and Goa. Overall, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide has planned 18
new hotels across India by 2015 end. International hotel chains like Jumeirah, Mandarin Oriental, Lebua and MGM are some of the top end luxury hotel brands knocking on India’s doors. One and Only Resorts, another high-end brand with presence in Mexico, Bahamas, Dubai, is also keen on an India foray. London-based Langham and Bangkok-headquartered Anantara are also among the other luxury chains sussing out opportunities in the sub-continent. “India is a market they cannot ignore. They have got a head start in China and now India is the place to be in,” says Kaushik Vardharajan of HVS India. Is the personalization trend going to last? The answer to this question is simple. Who doesn’t like being wowed? Hotels that embrace standard solutions and put the right emphasis
on training and consistency will take personalized service delivery to the next level. The trend, say market pundits, will have a positive impact both on the travelers as well as suppliers as it presents a kaleidoscope of opportunities for the latter to create a USP for themselves in turn ensuring a one-of-a-kind experience for the guests. “For the suppliers it brings innovation because one is always striving to go beyond the obvious,” adds Westin’s Sharma. “It also helps harness a symbiotic relationship between the travelers and hotels and ultimately create a win-win situation for both. While the guests will acquire a customized brand experience, delivering it will help hotels generate happy guests and consistent business for the brand.” Indeed what could be better? by Neeta lal

getting the most out of your incentives
With the increasing MICE tourism in India, specialized tour operators are ready to give you interesting itineraries for your organization. Meet Anish Kumar P.K., CEO, The Travel Planners.
A
ccording to you, which are the leading MICE destinations in India?
Hyderabad with a modern airport and International Convention centre emerged as the convention capital of India. Top metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kochi also play host to meetings and conferences of corporate India.
Where do you think India stands as a MICE Destination on the world map? Incentive tourism is a great way to reward employees. And what better destination than India – a cultural motley of modern and the ancient, a blend of heritage and nature, India offers different kinds of options for incentive tourism programme. I think India will emerge as an incredible destination for Incentive tours due to the variety of experiential holiday activities available in the country. MICE is an emerging segment in the tourism industry and India has so much to offer to its tourists. You can have different experiences ranging from the snow capped peaks of Himalayas to the beautiful backwaters of Kerala. Blessed with beautiful nature, a rich history and a diverse culture, India can offer a different MICE experi-
ence to the travellers. India has great potential to attract MICE ranging from 50 to 3000 people. For handling above 3000 people capacity we have limited choices in the country.
According to you, why should a foreign national company choose India as their MICE destination? Kerala and Goa are the favourite MICE destination for South Indian IT firms due to accessibility and the variety of products like lush jungles, hill stations with tea estates, sandy

beaches, enchanting backwaters, houseboats and sand-swept deserts. There’s so much to choose from. Golden triangle and Kerala are the favourite itineraries of Incentive tour operators in the main source markets of India.
Which nationalities prefer coming to India for MICE? Last year we mostly had Swiss groups coming in for MICE to India, and we have groups from Germany and Holland coming in for the coming seasons. The Americans have surplus money and India is one of the most interesting destinations for them, so of course we have large number of MICE groups coming in from that part of the world too.
What kind of packages do you offer for an incentive trip to Kerala? Kerala has great potential in terms of tourism and is one of the most preferred destinations for Incentive tours. Kerala can offer variety of optional tours for Incentive programs which can include village experience, houseboat cruise, trekking, cultural shows, varied cuisines etc. Kerala’s share to Incentive market will increase soon as many corporate have identified Ayurveda and yoga sessions to be part of their incentive program to rejuvenate, motivate and
retain the staff. We have introduced an incentive program combining Ayurveda and yoga called “Rejuvenate and Retain to make them stress free and to improve the staff’s productivity, it has takers from the international source markets too.
What interesting MICE facilities does Kerala have to offer to corporates? New hotels and resorts with conference facilities added MICE as a vertical to bring more travellers to Kerala. The number of rooms available at each destinations has increased and Lulu International, the second largest convention centre is in Kerala has all the facilities to hold international conventions. This brought Kerala to the list of MICE destinations in India. Le Meridian Convention centres at Cochin with availability of large number of rooms in five star categories in Cochin attracted many national and International conferences.
Which has been the most interesting MICE trip that you have planned till now? The most interesting MICE trip has been the Hike Bike Raft. It was a 3 nights 4 days trip in Calicut. It includes many interesting activities for the employees, which add adventure and fun to the trip. From bamboo rafting, cycling, to hike to Edakkal Caves, it has the best of all. The third day starts with a half day hike which takes you to the foothills of the Chembra ranges. After lunch, one of the most fun sports, mud football is organized for the whole team to enjoy.
Can you give an idea on the cost that is incurred? The packages are priced differently, depending on the activities included, number of days and many other factors. Taking an example of a 2 nights 3 days package for Kerala Backwater Incentive Tour would cost around ` 7,150 per person (approximately).
Any tips for MICE planners? I would like to suggest hotels to have more number of twin rooms. This is required because, if a company is travelling for a meeting, the rooms will be shared by colleagues, and hence there should be more number of twin rooms to add comfort for the guests. With this more people can be accommodated easily. There is a great opportunity for weddings as well as the interest of getting married in India is getting popular in western countries. So, India should focus on it now. as told to Nikita chopra

Mumbai’s latest signature, Tandoor Dining and Lounge with custom-created opulent interiors reminiscent of Northwest Frontier and royal Persian banquets lays out the choicest of signature fare fit for kings. Jyran’s Master Chef Shaukat Ali Qureshi hailing from the legendary 200-year-old Qureshi family prides itself as the guardian of the rich legacy of Nawabi cuisine revealed in his 40 years of real mastery of flavours and textures that can be sensed in the delectable and exotic Nahari Al Subho, Subz Miloni and Chooza Makhni. Chef Shaukat’s perfectionism is too famed as his one-of-their-kind culinary creations scale way above raptures of endless appreciation. Also a poet, he mixes ingredients in his cooking and blends spices in his poetry with equal passion. His Nahari Al Subho speaks the language of well tempered and respected spice combos, the whole leg of lamb succulently bowing to Chef Shaukat’s aromatic curry. While the aromas are distinctly evocative, the secret of this signature number is contained fastidiously in a Potli, ingredients that command the exoticness and exclusivity of Javitri and Saffron like no other dish. The rose petals and Kevda water combine in the symphony of flavours. Chef Shaukat’s brilliant Subz Miloni based with the velvety finish of tender spinach in a calibrated mix of garlic, cumin, green chilies and assorted spices

While the spinach and spices play host, the assorted veggies uplift with light-neasy flavours. Absolutely eclectic. Inshallah! Chooza Makhni – smartly marinated and Tandoor grilled tikka of tender chicken is the meat simmering into it’s own juices in grand style and substance. Authentic Kashmiri Kasturi chilly makes magic with buttered cream for that rich and sinful tomato gravy which sings along in hung curd and honey tinged mouthmelting titillation! It’s a royal repast contained in one dish. Now that’s when we herald ‘Encore!’

His signature marvels include the inviting Sheesh Taouk and the glorious Mezze Buffet. The accompanying carrot and beet rings and a liberal helping of olives, gherkins and assorted veggies add zing to this delightful dish. Magnificent! The ‘Mezze Buffet’ is a kaleidoscope of colors and smorgasbord of flavors par excellence by Chef Hemant Oberoi. So you have a waltz of Hummus Bin Lahm (Hummus topped with crispy lamb and pine-nuts), Moutabel (Char grilled aubergine pureed with sesame paste and olive oil traditional delight from Beirut), Spinach Fatayer (oven baked pastry triangle with spinach and pine nuts, routes are from Damascus) and Falafel (fried chickpea garlic and onion nuggets). Executive Chef Rajdeep Kapoor who conducts one of the world’s most distinguished, award-winning fine dining havens has as-
cended a long way since his graduation from the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Bangalore. With his expertise in classical Indian food and his strong belief in its rich traditions, he endeavours to refine Indian food while retaining its authenticity and flavours. He does so with aplomb as the much acclaimed signature cuisine here proves the fact. Serious purveyors of fine cuisine vouch for the silky smooth Shikampur Kebabs, thrilling Badin Jaan and the not-to-be-missed Dum Pukht Biryani. A careful ensemble of a myriad ingredients and condiments synergized to create that irresistible specialty, Shikampur Kebabs are aromatic kebabs made of yellow gram, lamb and yogurt. Kebabs flourished under the keen patronage of the Nawabs of Awadh and Shikampur Kebabs are reputed to be very tender with that ‘hey pronto!’ palate feel. It also contains aromatic and digestive spices that are beneficial to the diners’ continued health and well-being. Chef Rajdeep goes superlative with the Badin Jaan, celebrating vegetarian signature cusine with smartly tempered aubergine that’s flash-fried and topped with a rustic tomato and roast cumin coulis and garnished with garlic flavoured yogurt. Marinated with select herbs and spices, the lightly fried slices of aubergine offer crunchy thrills and come into their own when savored with relish, the yoghurt creating tongue-teasing notes of harmony. The authentic saffron exudes a fragrant, lingering aroma…hmmm!

One of Queen Elizabeth’s representatives was our guest, and took home an exhilarating experience which inspired Her Majesty to write personally to Boman Kohinoor. She even sent him a self portrait. Boman Kohinoor’s son, probably India’s only traditionally trained Iranian Chef -Afshin Kohinoor carries the proud mantle of his grandfather’s culinary legacy to sensory perfection. Business by design The hotel has been fashioned to create a host of niches – whether you’re in the atrium lobby or at one of the restaurants, a quiet, seeminglysecluded private spot is a guarantee. Meeting rooms that open into a coliseum-esque porch, are tucked away and form a semicircle beneath a charming atrium – besides the aesthetics of, their placement makes them discreet. The big movement is towards environments that generate productivity – the hotel, only about 3 years old was being conceptualized as the movement took form and has taken several cues from it. A
libaug has long been a hideaway for Mumbai’s rich and famous, some of who have weekend or holiday homes tucked away from the public gaze. Despite its popularity with the celebrities, this beach destination didn’t have a luxury hotel to boast of for a long time. It’s almost like a lot of Maharashtra’s brilliant beach destinations that are still waking up to their hidden potential. It took me about three hours from the Mumbai airport on a Friday afternoon to reach the Radisson Blu Resort and Spa – my home for that weekend. Alibaug is located off the Mumbai-Goa road and the ongoing Radisson Blu Alibaug Resort

expansion work along the stretch calls for some gritty driving. Thankfully I managed to avoid Mumbai’s infamous evening traffic and made it to the resort before sunset. The Radisson Blu resort is located about 5 kms before Alibaug town and spread over 16 acres next to a sleepy village. It’s an oasis of luxury and it’s not surprising that a lot of weekend travellers from Mumbai don’t leave the confines of this resort through their stay in Alibaug. The resort has 156 rooms and most of the rooms surround the hotel’s expansive pool. Quite a few of the ground floor rooms offer direct access to the pool and intimate sit-outs that overlook the shimmering pool.
Saturday morning began early with a visit to the Nagaon beach about 15 kms from the resort. This is one of Alibaug’s quieter beaches largely due to its distance from Alibaug town. The beach is surrounded by coconut palms and betel trees and has now become a hub for water sports and swimming, thanks to its relatively calm waters. I headed back to the resort for breakfast and decided I’d had enough of the morning sun. If that trip to your day spa in Mumbai does not rejuvenate you, the Mandara Spa that is the centrepiece of the Radisson Blu resort is reason enough to pack your overnight bag and drive to Alibaug. India’s next wine destination?

B
engaluru was the only Indian city that figured in a global toast that was raised as part of the Sheraton Social hour in May 2013. This unique initiative was almost structured like a virtual baton relay where a toast was raised every half hour in Sheraton hotels across the world, making it the largest toast ever raised. It was an interesting concept that brought sommeliers, wine aficionados and each city’s glitterati under one roof. But what was more interesting is that Bengaluru was the chosen city in India above the country’s top two wine markets Mumbai and Delhi (In that order). Bengaluru might currently constitute only 15% of the total wine sales in India but is one of the fastest growing markets. With India’s current per capita wine consumption at a paltry 9-10 ml/year the potential for growth is obviously huge. Martin Wuethrich the General Manager of Sheraton Bangalore at Brigade Gateway and the host for that evening has seen the wine scene in Bengaluru has transformed ever since he first arrived in the city three years ago. “Guests at our hotel are more well-informed about wines and understand the health benefits vis-a-vis other spirits. Currently we serve 16 wines by the glass; as a result of the increased demand for wines”. Wuetrich also believes Bengaluru’s growing stature as a wine destination is also largely due to the presence of local labels and winemakers who have raised the bar in the last few years. Nashik might be the unofficial wine capital of India but India’s modern wine story unfolded near Bengaluru in the 1980s when Grover Vineyards first planted 33 different grape varietals that eventually led to the founding of the iconic La Reserve brand in the 1990s. A lot more local brands have joined the fray. The city’s Alpine Wineries engaged International wine expert Stéphane Derenoncourt to develop a series of signature wines and its Sauvignon Blanc has won recognition at industry platforms. The Bangalore Wine club is not just one of the oldest in the country but one of the most active and bursting with members who are passionate about wine. Over the past eleven years the club has been one of the catalysts for awareness and education about fine wines in the city with marquee events. Ruma Singh, a wine expert and a former president of the Bangalore Wine Club is heartened with the desire for information among the city’s wine enthusiasts – “It’s not just F&B and hospitality industry executives

“Bangalore’s growing stature as a wine destination is also largely due to the presence of local labels and winemakers who have raised the bar in the last few years.” who are interested in certified programmes on wine awareness anymore, quite a few young professionals are keen to learn about wines in a structured fashion too”. Another success story from Bengaluru is the SDU winery headed by Shaambavi Hingorani whose journey began about a decade ago along with the expert advice of Italian wine maker Andrea Valentinuzzi. The company has two vineyards near Bengaluru in the Nandi Hills appellation and produces two highly regarded red wines under the Deva label – a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Syrah. According to Mohit Nischol Business Head of SDU Winery the proximity of scores of vineyards from Bengaluru has played a big role in the expansion of the market, paving the way for a lot of the city’s residents taking to wine. “The availability of good local wines and the advent of wine taverns that sell wine by the glass have altered the perception in Bengaluru that wine is suitable only for formal occasions”. Four Seasons part of the UB group is another wine label headquartered in Bengaluru; the company’s wines are however bottled in Maharashtra. Karnataka and Maharashtra account for 90% of all the wine production in the country and unfortunately both states are protective about their respective industries. This means that consumers pay an additional Rs 200-300 on taxes and duties on every bottle of wine that comes from outside the state. The odd thing about these duties is that it treats wines from outside the state and outside the country on the same basis. This sometimes favours cheap International wines as new wine drinkers tend to be more comfortable buying imported wines that are priced on par with Indian wines. Abhay Kewadkar, Chief Winemaker and Director – Wines, The UB Group
believes this discriminatory policy is hurting the industry. However he is buoyant about the fortunes of UB’s newest wine brand Zinzi that is clearly targeted at the young twentysomething wine drinker. “The Market has matured considerably people just don’t ask for a white or a red wine anymore they ask for specific wines like a Merlot or a Chardonnay”. Manu Chandra, Chief Executive and Partner of Olive Beach one of Bengaluru’s preferred fine dining restaurants echoes Kewadkar’s views. “An evolved consumer coupled with a wider array of choices, both domestic and International labels is propelling growth in Bengaluru”. Olive Beach restructured its wine list and arranged wines ‘mood-wise’, a clear indication that the city’s diners can make well-informed choices. Chandra also believes the growing popularity of wine-based Sangrias in the city’s bars will lead to more consumers discovering wine. Bengaluru might not have a large diplomatic community like Delhi that drives wine consumption but the city has a large number of expats and pleasant weather through most of the year. The weather and scores of restaurants with impressive wine lists and International cuisine have been an integral part of the city’s wine story. The Sheraton Bangalore at Brigade Gateway has a weekly social hour where guests can discover wines and share experiences with fellow guests. It’s probably what prompted Sheraton to pick its Bengaluru hotel as the sole Indian representative in its innovative global Toast. Judging by the response and the city’s continued growth as a wine destination, wine drinkers in Bengaluru look set to raise their glasses yet again when the Sheraton Global toast returns in 2014. by Ashwin Rajagopalan

Shopping in
Bangkok
S
hopping malls in Bangkok
There are several good malls in the city, each with its own USP. Start with Siam Paragon, the luxury mall which is usually the first stop for most high end shoppers. You can catch a movie at the 16 screen Paragon Cineplex or take your kids to explore the Siam Ocean World aquarium. Central World offers more youthful options in comparison and also has Toys ‘R’ Us, a must do for families travelling with young children. For more affordable shopping, head to MBK with over 2000 shops spread over seven retail floors. Highly recommended for picking up reasonable and stylish footwear (you will find a lot of the same designs in local Delhi shops as well). Terminal 21 on Sukhumvit Road offers an interesting global shopping experience. You will find yourself walking around a labyrinth of shops styled as the Istanbul Souk or Tokyo City, London’s Carnaby Street or San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. Home to leading international luxury brands, Gaysorn Shopping Mall is best for those looking for seriously luxury brands. You will also find Thailand’s most innovative and leading designers here. Other malls worth a visit, provided you are left with time and energy, include Central Chidlom, Siam Discovery, Siam and Pantip Plaza, Pratunam (primarily for any IT needs). Most malls are open from 10 am to 10 pm, seven days a week.

Thailand has always been a favourite shopping destination for Delhiites. With a convenient two hour flight, reasonably priced air tickets and visas available on arrival, Thailand has quickly become an easy getaway that offers spicy Thai food, beautiful beaches, spas and world class golf courses in an environment that retains a sense of the familiar. One of the highlights of any trip to Thailand has to be the plethora of shopping options in Bangkok. From luxury to high street to local markets, Bangkok has something for every age and every pocket.
Asiatique The Riverfront
Asiatique is a unique combination of the two most successful aspects of Bangkok – a night market and a mall. With over 1,500 boutiques and 40 restaurants housed in the huge replica of a warehouse complex, you can quite conveniently spend an entire evening here. Clean and well planned Asiatique is split into four categories, The Chareonkrung District is where you will find the majority of small boutiques (over 1,000 in four warehouses) selling souvenirs, handicrafts, jewellery, and clothing. For cutting-edge fashion and gadgets there’s the Factory District, which includes an Apple store. Upscale dining options are in the Waterfront District, with smart Italian, Thai and seafood restaurants. The Town Square District has bars and outdoor space for events. Travel tip : take the boat and skip the taxi. Open from 5:00 am till midnight.
Siam Square Bangkok
This is touted as the most expensive area in town. An open market area spread over about 10,000 sqm, this place is bursting with shops, cafes and entertainment choices. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok, Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok and Centara Grand at Central World are just a few of the five-star hotels in the area. Recommended local shops include Pony Stone – for that perfect

leather jacket and platform heels, Post-Nerd – for cool T-shirts that take inspiration from classic bands, Rotsaniyom, for vintage lace tops and dresses and Sleeping Pills for sailor dresses, pastel peplum skirts, and glittery pumps.
Chatuchk Weekend Market
Think of a larger, better stocked local Delhi market. The 27-acre area of Chatuchak is home to more than 15,000 market stalls and is among the largest markets in the world – a great place to pick up gifts for friends back home, a few interesting home accessories or casual clothes. There are also plenty of local eating options with snack vendors and a few restaurants close by. Go early to escape the crowds. A definite must visit, but don’t forget to bargain. Open from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
Patong Night Market
The Patpong Night Market is a must visit tourist hot spot, especially to experience Bangkok’s famous night life. Often the first stop for tourists, this busy and lively market is known for its Go-Go Bars, souvenir shops and entertainment options. You must remember to bargain hard when shopping here. Stalls start at 6 pm in the evening and remain open till around 1 am.
Bangkok Flower Market
Thailand is known for its beautiful flowers. An interesting place to visit is The Bangkok Flower Market or Pak Klong Talad located near the riverside, not far from Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. This is the biggest wholesale and retail fresh flower market in Bangkok. The market has all kinds of popular flowers and flora-related items. It is open 24 hours and tends to be more popular around night time. Each side of the busy walkway is crammed with flower shops and carts and the entire walkway is shielded by umbrellas and awnings on both sides of the road.
Chinatown Shopping
Chinatown, also called Yawolat after the neighborhood’s main street, has been a Bangkok shopping destination for decades and has everything from wholesale shoes to fresh produce to Thai silk. It is always crowded and can tend to get hot and confusing. The small alleys crammed with market stalls sell a variety of goods from hair accessories, tea sets, hardware and food to fabric, and other unique shopping knick-knacks. One of the main attractions is Pahurat, a similar market area. Timings: 10 am to around 6 pm in the evening. by team gonow June 2013 go now

The Great Holiday of the Gods
Puri’s Titanic Rath Yatra
W
e saw the gods going on vacation. We and a million other people. On a sweat-pouring, humid, monsoon day in Odisha’s Puri, they streamed down side streets and lanes and little winding alleys, flowed into the broad Grand Road filling it, packing in tighter and tighter till all we could see from our grandstand in the terrace of the palace was a seething river of heads streaked with snaking currents of saffron, red, white, blue and khaki as more drum-

ming, chanting, sects and cults flowed into the flood of devotees. This day was Puri’s yearly outdoor encounter with The Lord of the Universe, Jagganath, his brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra. Every so often, in an auspicious year and time, these three implacable deitie s have themselves renewed. Priests go out into the for-
ests and identify a sacred, medicinal, neem tree. They feel it in the prescribed manner, have it carved into three icons painted in the traditional way. The three statues have bright faces and bodies but no hands because, according to legend, a sacerdotal carver had been interrupted before he could complete his task and so, traditionally, the sculptures have remained that way ever since. Then, in the dark of night, a blindfolded priest, his hands wrapped in cloth, transfers the life substance from the old idols into the new statues. The statues then become idols, worthy of worship, and the old icons become statues again and are buried. Every year, the sacred idols are bathed, rested, refreshed, installed in their newly carved and painted wooden chariots outside the great temple and, with great ceremony, towed to their vacation shrine. There they will rest and recuperate for a while, before being hauled back and re-installed in the great temple. We, and ten lakh devotees, had come to see the stupendous holiday procession of the Lords.

The Gajapati Maharaja, “Servant of the Lord”, backed by the priests of Lord Jagannath
On that hot day, the frisson of festivity was electric. The huge ratha-chariots stood at the far end of Grand Road where zestful crowds clanged cymbals, thudded drums, danced and sang. A street-side langar got ready to serve steaming poori-bhaji to eager pilgrims. After breakfast, the police cleared a path for hurrying heralds lofting standards and banners. They stopped at the gate of the palace. The Gajapati Maharaja, linear descendant of the great Ganga dynasty whose ancestor had brought the Lords from their forest home to Puri, stepped
out. Dressed in ceremonial white robes with a plumed and jeweled turban, and the sash and cummerbund of office, he was accompanied by the head priest. He got into a silver palanquin. Fluttering flags and standards tracked his passage through the jubilant crowd. Then, using a golden broom, he carefully swept the forecourt of the huge rathas. The hours clicked by, un-noticed. Lunch was served: delectably Oriya. A palpable hush descended and we heard crows cawing in the still air. Then, suddenly, there was a reverberating roar from a million throats. Hundreds of men bent their backs, picked up the thick ropes of the chariots, strained. Another roar filled the air along with the echoing call of conches, a ringing of bells, a clashing of gongs, a thudding of drums. Slowly, almost reluctantly, Balabhadra’s chariot began to move. A barechested panda perched confidently on the mud-guard of an enormous wheel as it turned slowly. Joyous crowds closed in behind like shimmering water in a ferry’s wake. We looked at our watches. Time had flipped. We had been buoyed up for eight hours and the yatra had only just begun. A red fire tanker sprayed a plume of water over the crowd as pilgrims danced in ecstatic devotion. A mummer dressed like Shiva struck poses with a brass trident then merged with the crowd as the police cleared a broad path for the first rath. Slowly, ponderously, the black and red chariot of Subhadra rolled into view. It was crammed with saffron-clad servitors clanging gongs, waving cheerily. The chariot moved on, the crowd flowed in behind it. Cameras clicked and flared around us. A diamond merchant sat cross-legged on the floor of our terrace, entranced in worship. “He is a great devotee of Lord Krishna” his friend told us. The diamond merchant threw up his hands in veneration, prostrated himself as the revered chariot of Jagannath, Lord of the Universe, rolled into view. Two young pandas sat astride the white, wooden, horses. Worshippers on our terrace joined their hands and bowed deeply in obeisance till this, the last and most powerful ratha, had passed. The three chariots began to shrink with distance as they drew closer to Gundicha temple where the Lords would rest for some days before making the return journey to the main temple.
The great cacophony of celebration began to subside as the crowds dispersed in the soft light of sunset, laughing and clapping, charged by their twelve-hour close encounter with their gods. We had been up here, streaming sweat, all through a long day but, strangely, we still felt unusually vitalized by it all. That evening, in the lobby of an upscale hotel, we saw turbaned replicas of the three deities. Their images, totemic, basic and extremely powerful, have generated a burgeoning efflorescence of religious art and the neat village of Raghurajpur depends on it. It came into being, originally, to reassure devotees when the great idols were sequestered after their ritual bath. They needed the presence of their images, From there, these bright icons spread across the globe as pilgrims carried them into their homes and installed them in their family altars. As we were leaving Puri it struck us that the name of the Lord of the Universe has also spread over the world: perhaps unwittingly. When the British first saw the great Rath Yatra they were so impressed by its implacable power that they cloned a word to describe it. According to our dictionary, the English word for a massive inexorable force that crushes whatever is in its path is juggernaut. It should really be Jagganath – Lord of the Universe.
