Truly Asia

As a Delhi resident, Jim Corbett is the first thing which comes to my mind in the name of natural parks or wildlife sanctuaries. Your feature on the Kaziranga Natural Park was quite informative. I would love to visit this gorgeous green land and meet its many beauties.

They say Malaysia is truly Asia. Your feature on Pangkor islands drove the fact home. I never expected that Malaysia would be home to a Hindu temple or play host to a Hindu wedding. A beach wedding has been a dream. Perhaps Malaysia will be the answer to my dream.

Moreover with the Navratras coming up, a lot of non-vegetarians would make the change towards vegetarianism. Thanks for apprising us with the restaurant at the perfect timing.

I often visit Mumbai on business meetin g s a nd confer ence s . U s ua ll y my company decides my accommodation and I generally never interfere in their decision. But thanks to your article about luxury hotels near the Airport. I can now chose for myself and the select the best and the most convenient option while planning my trip.

the Prasiddha Foundation; the foundation has established itself as one of the premier cultural organization of the country. Prahlad believes that the festival encourages both Indian and international artistes to put their best foot forward. The event also stands proof to the fact how arts unite the world. The director attributes her eureka moment to the various art festivals she attended across the world and the number of visitors they drew. “I was surprised to see the scale at which Edinburgh Arts and Tokyo International Art Festivals were conducted. I didn’t understand why we didn’t have a multi venue multicultural event. Moreover for a country’s progress and development, even art needs progression and exposure. The festival hence not only aims at presenting India as a world class art hub but also fosters international camaraderie and brotherhood.” Pratibha believes that every art form needs to travel. “None of us would have known Kuchipudi had it not moved out of a small village in Andhra Pradesh and come to Hyderabad and eventually to the entire nation. Being known nationwide is not the end, if there’s a distinct art form, it needs to reach out to the entire world. Through DIAF, I hope to provide a platform for the same innovation and diffusion of art forms so that they can travel throughout the globe without any barriers.” by Avni Mehrotra

O

ver the last fifty years, Surat has grown into a booming business hub, with a shift from unorganized sectors to corporatized ones in its dominant textile and diamond processing industry. Today, Surat’s diamond industry cuts and polishes 80 to 90 per cent of the world’s diamonds. It is a highly developed textile industry, with more weaving units and embroidery machines than perhaps any other city in the country. Industrial zones near Surat like Hazira and Kamej are centres for heavy industries - petrochemicals complexes, steel plants, gas processing plants, cement plants, heavy engineering and fertilizer plants. Companies like Essar, Reliance, L&T, Birla, ONGC, Gail, GSPC, Gujarat Gas, GIPCL, KRIBCO, and multinationals such as Shell and Niko are located in and around Surat.

areas that have come up all over Surat. As we entered Surat from the National Highway, we drove on the Ring Road and came to the Varachha Flyover, one of the longest in India. From here, we got a panoramic view of Surat’s textile market, which is now a neatly planned complex. After driving past the trendy shops and cafes of Parle Point, we reached The Gateway Hotel Athwa Lines. This 208-room hotel from the Taj Group’s Gateway Hotels is one of Gujarat’s largest and was redesigned in 2008. The hotel flaunts a colourful tea lounge and a deli, with attractive tree motifs. Flow, the all-day dining restaurant, is located with a great view of the river Tapti, where some of the dining tables on the riverside lawn. We enjoyed some wood-fire oven pizza and coffee before retiring to our rooms, which had excellent views of the pool, garden and the Tapti River.

Global city

Diamond destination

Now, as the second largest city in Gujarat and one of the 10 most populous in India, Surat is truly the country’s new boomtown. Worldwide it ranks among the fastest growing in terms of population, GDP and economic progress. In 2011, the Urban Development Ministry even rated Surat the third cleanest city in India in 2011, a long way from the Surat of my childhood in the 1970s, the Surat of filthy market lanes and dusty sidewalks. The shift began in the 1990s when Surat and its people worked hard to transform it to what it is today: a city with brilliant infrastructure, computerised water distribution and drainage systems, one of the best water treatment plants in India and a wide range of modern facilities. This has all led to a new burst of energy, which is visible in the new hotels, restaurants and shopping

Later, we visited Venus Jewel, whose owner SP Shah gave us a tour of the diamond polishing activities in Surat. Shah explained,

Surat has leaped from a small town to a bustling industrial hub in a short period. Major companies as well as new hotels and restaurants are shaping the city into a strong cosmopolitan presence.

“The days when diamond polishing was done in family-run units with one hall where workers squatted around cutting wheels is now giving way to corporatized diamond polishing factories, with computerised modelling technologies, automated machinery, inventory and quality control systems, and better working conditions for more than 1,000 personnel each. Today’s factories use a combination of computer-aided technologies and expert human judgement to get maximum yield and quality from rough-stone.”

Textile hub From there, we drove on the Sumul Dairy Road to the Textile Market where we met with association heads. They talked about the growth of Surat from the days of making artificial silk saris in the 1960s to the growing availability of nylon and acrylic in the 1970s and the entry of petrochemicals like polyester and how the industry started getting organized in the 1980s. At the market, we were happy to meet Sanjay Sarawagi, son of the founder of the Laxmipati brand, who suggested we visit his factory, Shree Siddhi VinayakSarees, a process house located in a typical industrial estate. On entering the shed, we were pleasantly surprised to see the computer-controlled, automated and semi-automated processes. The manager explained, “These machines reduce the water consumption of their units and generate less heat than the conventional processing factories, from the dyeing and finishing areas, he took us to the printing, embroidery and stitching departments.” We decided to visit Mr & Mrs Somani, a restaurant at The Grand Bhagwati, after hearing rave reviews about its décor. The restaurant gets its name from Narendra and SunitaSomani, the directors of Bhagwati

The Gateway Hotel Athwa Lines, the Taj run 5-star hotel in Surat,

Banquets and Hotels Ltd. NarendraSomani told us, “Surat is a fast growing city with a large number of HNI families, at the right stage for development for those in hospitality and lifestyle businesses. It is a city with all the right parameters of social and economic development. This is the reason we decided to build a five-star hotel, a convention centre, club, restaurants and banqueting venues in the city.”

Modest beginning The story of the Somani family is one of the many fairy tales in emerging India. Coming from a modest background of small tea and coffee shops, the family entered the business of catering in the late 1980s on a small scale. Their business grew rapidly, with the addition of a huge centralized kitchen in the 1990s, and they built a convention hotel in Ahmedabad called The Grand Bhagwati. Today, their hotels are located in Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Surat, and they have a large number of food and beverage outlets like restaurants, cafes and cake shops. Considering that The Grand Bhagwati in Surat is their largest business unit, it shows this family’s confidence in the city. The 170 room-hotel is largely focusing on MICE tourism. Devanand Somani, director of the hotel, said: “With six banquet halls, our property boasts more than 1,25,000 sq ft of column-free banqueting space. We have

a swimming pool, tennis, squash and table tennis, billiards areas, children’s play areas, disco, mini-theatre, a walking track and a card room. The convention centre has a beauty salon, florist, among other facilities.” This resonates with Surat’s growth and recognition as a place for corporate events, official meetings and banqueting. The increasingly cosmopolitan population of Surat is also advancing the restaurant industry. Devanand Somani added, “The diamond and jewellery majors who hail from Surat but are now based in Mumbai and other metros, or overseas, have their weddings in this city. They have a high-spend.”

Warm hospitality The hotel has restaurants like Crystal Lounge, Ziba, Mr & Mrs Somani and Club Café. We went to Mr & Mrs Somani, the director’s signature restaurant, with plush furniture and tapestries in rich tones of maroon, cream and gold. The menu takes a contemporary look at North Indian fare, which is the favourite of the Somani family. We started with Pesto Paneer Tikka and Mint Cheese Grill Toast for starters with smoked lassi, and then ordered Lava Stone Spit Roasted Paneer, Dhungar Paneer, Dingri Dum and the Hyderabadi Patherke Paneer. The chef told us that the Awadhi Warqui Paratha with vegetarian kebabs is extremely popular as well. Be it good food, efficient infrastructure,

factfile Getting there Surat is well connected to major cities in India by train and air. Hotels The Grand Bhagwati Surat, The Gateway Hotel Athwa Lines and Lords Plaza are top hotels of Surat. Ostria, Best Western Yuvraj and Ginger are mid-budget options. There are a number of budget hotels near Surat railway station. Eat-Out Flow at The Gateway Hotel Athwa Line has good food and a 24-hour coffee shop. Restaurants at The Grand Bhagwati Surat are a good option as well as their standalone restaurants in the city. At Centre Court, a café in Parle Point, you can enjoy non-vegetarian and other grills on the sizzling platter. It also has a popular bakery. Another popular hangout is Coffee Culture in the Parle Point area. Sizzling Salsa is famous for its Italian and Mexican food. The ISCON Mall has some decent places to eat like Village Restaurant and Momo. You could also try one of the many national restaurant chains like Mainland China and Yoko Sizzlers. Bhatvari, located on the outskirts of the city, serves cuisines of Gujarat in a traditional village setting, where you can sit cross-legged on the floor to eat, while listening to the live folk music. On the same lines, Rajasthani rural theme restaurant chain, ChokhiDhani, is located on the Mumbai Highway.

My Manipur, My motherland By MC Mary Kom

Manipur is known as Jeweled Land, and now it owns a precious jewel in the name of MC Mary Kom, who became India’s first women boxer to clinch an Olympic medal. She writes for GoNow on what all to do, if you do plan to visit her state, which has a road named as Mary Kom Ring Road.

I

t is truly humbling to land back in your own town after your most important achievement in life. I had the pleasure of the same when I went back to Imphal almost a week after returning from London. As I was made to move around the city in open chariot with crowd accompanying me at every turn of wheel, my mind went back to the early days in this wonderful town of mine. It is this city, which gave birth to my boxing ambitions, when I met coach Ibomcha Singh. Coming from a small village called Kangathei in Churandchandpur district, I was never intimidated coming into bigger city of Imphal. It is a place, which has amalgamation of all cultures. 32 communi-

ties of Manipur have a presence in Imphal.

IMA KEITHEL MARKET Ima market is the identity of Imphal for me. It’s amazing to witness a market that is by the women, for the women. A stroll in the Ema market and you would be astonished to see the variety of stuff available there. From the handicraft items to clothes to spices to precious Manipuri jewellery, you name it and find it there in that market. I have gone out shopping there quite a few times, and have loved the warmth with which women shop20

keepers addressed me. My favourite items from that market are the wraparound skirts and shirts. Although there isn’t any brand out there, but the manner in which the market is laid out, is simply magical. The market signifies the strength of a Manipuri woman who knows the art of perfectly balancing family life and their business.

MANIPURI FOOD I love Manipuri food. I can harvest on that cuisine unless I am nearing a tournament and I have to maintain my weight. The food is

always high on protein. Eromba, Chamthong and Kangsoi and few of my favourite dishes, and you would be surprised to know that I can cook them as well. I don’t enjoy going out much as it very rarely that I get to spend time in Imphal. I regularly cook Eromba at home with the stew of boiled potatoes or vegetables and a large amount of red chillies, dried fish and tomatoes for my husband and kids.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Out of so many tourist attractions of Maniour I am always nostalgic about Leimakhong

which is the headquarter of 57 Mountain Division and is some 20-odd km away from Imphal. There is a picnic spot named as Ankush where I have spend a lot of dates with my husband Onler. In winter months it’s an absolute delight to be there in the vast green fields where the serene surroundings and silence make for a perfect romantic setting. I would also recommend Loktak lake for tourists. It is on the way to my village from Imphal and the view from a hill around the lake is mesmerizing. It is a pretty lake, which has floating phumdis, making it look like October 2012 go now

ties, but when it comes to sports, lot of people come to Imphal for sporting ambitions. The Sports Authority of India’s center in Imphal gives hope to ambitions of many sportspersons. Boxing has come up in leaps and bounds and it all started with the Dingko Singh’s medal in 1998 Asian Games. I also run an academy in my house and have a 3-acre park available. Hopefully, I would get the support to make it into a full-fledged academy and attract tourists to come watch them as well.

FOLK MUSIC AND DANCE It is no secret to anyone that I am in total love with Manipuri dance and folk music. It was a pleasant surprise that Ministry of Tribal Affairs at a function in Delhi after the Olympics organised a dance show, and I really couldn’t stop from joining in the group. That is the effect Manipuri music has on us. The Rasleela of Radha and Krishna where we wear a double-headed drum with the Manipuri dance costume is such a great feeling. Back in our village during festival time, I remember those days of dancing and enjoying the folk music. Mind you I also have a liking for hindi songs and can hum a few.

SPORTS TOURISM It is a well known fact that Manipuris migrate to bigger towns for higher studies and employment opportuni22

UNITY IN DIVERSITY

On London Olympics

Living in the Games Village of the Olympics is one of the most cherished experiences for an athlete, but I was devoid of it as I wanted to train with my coach Charles Atkinson, who wasn’t accredited for the event. So as I spent time at Liverpool to train, it was nice to get the feel of London during the games. Decorated streets, music, bustling tube trains, and the paraphernalia suggested that there is a huge carnival on. It was simply amazing to be surrounded in that scenario. I did miss not being part of the Games, but getting the feel of London, the city was breathtaking. And I would like to thanks my Manipuri friends in London, who got me frequent supply of Manipuri food.

Manipur and Imphal have gone through lot of turmoil over the years and that has resulted in difficult economic situation. So much so that petrol prices have reached Rs 150 per liter, so you can imagine how difficult life is in this region. I hope that the region gets calmer in coming time and that increase it tourism value many fold. It’s a beautiful place to be at, and I would love everyone to come and visit it. The pilgrim cities along the Gangetic belt have thrown up spiritual centres, ashrams and hubs of healing based on vedic practices and yogic pursuits. These cities carry within them the energies that heal.

Spiritual solace in the lap of Ganga

T

Silvia D.G.

he Ganga flows with a silent aggression during this part of the year. All though, the monsoons have not been charitable, Ganga has been swelling with the melting glaciers following into its vast being. The downpours that have hit the Himalayan region have also left it more pregnant and swollen. Sitting by the banks of the river, one is overwhelmed by the vastness of the Ganga – it carries with it emotional and physical debris of zillions of seekers that flock to it for redeeming themselves from evil, from suffering. And like a selfless mother it washes off the agony of the collected sins of mankind over many births and lives, joining living forms in a democratic fashion embracing all with the same warmth and affection as though they all erupted from her womb. The Ganga connects the beginning to the end and joins the lost dots between the creator and the created.

Moment of disbelief As twilight gives way to the evening darkness, Haridwar awakens to a heightened evening – as millions of lamps light up the banks and the sound of mantras make music along with the tintinnabulation of temple bells, Haridwar reaches a spiritual climax. A trance that graces the city each evening shattering the demons with its blinding lights and chants. As the tiny lamps engulfed in leafy bowls float away carrying with it the promise of fulfilling the wishes of its devotes, there is spiritual wonderment and a moment of disbelief that enraptures all. That is the magic of being in Haridwar. 28

go now October 2012

The revered Mansa Devi temple just above the banks twinkles with light and it almost seems like all divine forces converge on the banks as they are invoked through humanity’s combined clamour for God to descend and make his presence felt. The Ganga’s journey along Uttarakhand is significant; as is the journey of thousands of visitors and pilgrims that follow its course to experience that similar tranquility that rises to a spiritual crescendo as a daily ritual as day gives way to the night. It helps that in so many years the pilgrim cities along the Gangetic belt have also thrown up spiritual centres, ashrams and hubs of healing and following a strict discipline based on ancient vedic practices and yogic pursuits. Right at the entry point of Haridwar is the Patanjali ashram made famous by its controversial guru Baba Ramdev. While the baba may have veered from his original calling, Patanjali continues to offer succour to followers through a strict discipline of Yoga.

Spiritual institutes There are many such spiritual and healthy cleansing options that Haridwar and Rishikesh offer. The Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyala (DSVVHaridwar), offering degree and diploma courses in yoga, healing and naturopathy has been talked about on international forums. What is interesting is that most of the treatment offered in these hubs is all free of cost! From offering nine- day packages, the DSVV attempts to heal patients suffering from diseases as grave as cancer to stress elimination. The institute offers rehabilitation from

spiritual getaway alcohol and other forms of addiction as well. Also, the institute runs purely on donations. The basic principle of all these institutes takes you back to a disciplined life and faith. Only a six-hour drive from the Capital and the holy towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh are bereft of all the clamour that Delhi is famous for. From the run for power, money and materialism that stalk us in metros, Haridwar and Rishikesh take you away into a world where I melt into an unidentifiable universal life force, into a diffused spiritual mass called life. These cities carry within them the energies that heal. Most of the credit can be given to the Ganga that runs through veins of these ancient cities. Little wonder that it is not only Indians but people over the world flock to these places in search of God and spirituality. But all is not tranquil in God’s own habitation. The Ganga is choking with the venom of human apathy – plastic bottles and nonbiodegradable waste. You sometimes really need to maneuver through narrow lanes and by-lanes avoiding the dirt and filth scattered by people who with no thought, respect or gratitude to what the river offers to its pilgrims have spilled in and around it the waste of human indifference. Much can be done just by each person’s personal will rather than just depending on campaigns.

German bakeries and more But despite the evils that we have thwarted the sacred river with, it still flows in a way that takes away your deepest troubles submerging in it all the travails and anxieties of humanity with its boundless magnanimity. Driving up to Rishikesh and exulting in excitement at the suspension bridges – the Ram and Laxman Jhula still bring out the children in all of us. There are Swiss and German bakeries that have sprung up with time offering vegetarian and egg-less versions of cakes and breads, making Rishikesh far more cosmopolitan than it could’ve ever been deemed to be. As you go further up from Rishikesh towards Shivpuri, the drive gets trickier but the visions are an exploration of natural beauty as you tear through the mountains and discover pristine spots of white sand beaches and the Ganga revealing its untouched charmed version. This is also the stretch made popular by rafters. From budget hotels to the Neemrana property, The Glasshouse on the gangs, there are enough and many popular jaunts for weekend holidayers or pilgrims in progress going up to

Hemkund Sahib or further up to Badrinath and Kedarnath. The entire stretch along which the Ganga flows is a haven for those seeking spiritual peace. The food available is mostly vegetarian (except the odd restaurant that may serve non-veg) and there are yoga centres dime a dozen that offer exercise courses and many gurus that have fan-following across the world. In Rishikesh particularly, the ISKON cult has a mass appeal. The huge centre with a beautiful temple has bhajan sessions through the day and any passers-by is welcome to sit and enjoy melodious songs sung in praise of the lord. It is quite fascinating how these places transform you. Driving into Haridwar from the din of the Capital immediately uplifts your spirits with the first glimpses of the river and the distant mountains and a clearer sky. A sense of purity pervades the air and taking you to another time and place even in temporal reality. In Haridwar and Rishikesh and the entire course of the Ganga going up to the Himalayas, we have a natural spiritual heritage. We need to protect it for our future generations and enjoy it with responsibility in the current times – taking in the spiritual minerals vital to our existence, we must give back to it by bearing the onus of protecting it for our own good. The Ganga needs to be redeemed for our existence. It’s ironic, but true that God is in the imminent need for care so that we continue to reap His blessings. by Sanghita singh October 2012 go now

is hero had got lost in the far horizons of the Himalayas and discovered a place where time stood still. We flew out of our home in those snow-crested mountains, into Malaysia, and discovered the lost horizon’s twin, in a cosseting, tropical, setting. Naturally, it’s also called Shangri-la but for those who know it better, it’s Rasa Sayang which means Feeling of Love: very appropriate for at least one Euro-Malaysian couple, as we discovered. To further enrich the matter, it’s set on a wild and wonderful beach called Batu Feringgi which is another way of saying ‘The

Foreigner’s Rock’ One of these foreigners was a gentleman-mariner who sailed in from Calcutta... as it was called then.. and, in the manner of the swashbuckling Brits of those days, claimed the island for his misty nation. So, now that we have spun a web of derring-do and a little mystery, here’s the delightfully romantic reality. And the reality is that Rasa Sayang is the friendliest, most cosseting, tropical resort we have experienced anywhere abroad in our 38 years of professional travelling. To start with it’s some distance out of the heritage heart of Penang, George Town.

Penang Island is, in turn, separated from mainland Malaysia by an arm of the Andaman Sea. Clearly, any way you look at it, it’s sequestered from the hurrying world in much the same way that Hilton’s Shangri-la was. To add to its Lost Horizon feel, it is set in a 30 acre garden where over 50,000 plants mass around a Malay ‘palace’ with a darkbrown timber roof and rising gables that look magically Far Eastern. From our room in the Rasa Wing we gazed out over those acres of greenery, past the bronze dome of the Chi spa, to the beach at the end of the grounds where para-

destination gliders sailed like wind-borne blossoms. We were tempted to loll in our balcony soak-tub with striated sunset-and-shadow filtering through the protective blinds. But we were hungry and we had a long day ahead of us tomorrow. We freshened up, descended, strolled down corridors filled with the strumming of rain on the leaves outside, and stepped into history. It was a traditional spice store with all the spices offered by the best kirana stores of home along with masala stones and spice tins with glass fronts and packets of spices on sale. It was the lure of these

tropical spices had brought the East India’s Company’s trader, Captain Francis Light, to Penang in the first place. Beyond this functional spice market was its eponymous Spice Market Cafe buffet restaurant. Chefs manned a carvery and stations created Indian, Chinese and stalwart European fare; their salad counter was a vegetarian bonanza; their spread of sweets and ice-creams was a sinful temptation; and their cheeses made us believe that we were back in Switzerland and Spain. And this is only one of 6 restaurants. We dined, that evening, not wisely but far too well. The next morning the sun shone fitfully through scudding clouds and then the wind combed the great tresses of the rain trees and blew the cumulus away. We had a ‘light’ breakfast of steak, prawns and a few other sustaining viands before the urbane Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, Director of Communications, joined us for a long and fascinating walk through the landscaped grounds of the resort. Rasa Sayang was opened in 1973, a year before we started our travel-writing career leaving our maritime incarnation behind. Since then, this resort of the international Shangri-la group, has added to its guest facilities. We strode through its par three

executive golf course, walked past its three tennis courts, strolled around its water sports centre, ambled through its Turtle Eco Centre, trudged past its two swimming pools, breathlessly admired its Herb Garden, and rested, very thankfully, in Chi, its spa. We’ve not seen anything quite like it. It stands in a sequestered world of its own. Three thousand eight hundred sq meters of gardens hold 11 treatment villas, 3 couples’ villas, 8 garden suites with outdoor spa tubs, a yoga pavilion and a sanctum. A great, stupa-shaped, bronze dome above, reputedly, concentrates the five Chinese elements of metal, water, wood. fire and ether. We thought the elements were earth, air, fire, water and ether but since there weren’t any ancient Chinese seers to consult we presumed that metal and wood were siblings of earth and air. The elements certainly seemed to have recharged us. We needed it when we encountered two blonde, 7-year old, balls of fire: Connie and Annie. “A Feeling of Love”

The next morning the sun shone fitfully through scudding clouds and then the wind combed the great tresses of the rain trees and blew the cumulus away. dren of all ages off their parents’ hands. We can arrange crèche services for babies, fun activities for infants, and discos and karaoke for teens” We thought of our recently disbanded joint families still trying to cope without the help of caring aunts, uncles and grand-parents and felt that here was a family market worth tapping. Then, on a lawn dignifiedly festive with draped chairs facing a stage with a floral arch, we saw a touching ceremony. A beautiful Malaysian girl had married a young man in Norway. Now they had come to renew their vows before a priest in a batik shirt, in her home-land. Her mother, graciously, gave us an invitation and a copy of their ceremony. Later they had a formal, sit-down dinner in a ballroom that could hold 300 guests. Rasa Sayang was living up to its name. That evening we met Suleiman again at

evening champagne, cocktails and canapés with the other guests. He told us the ongoing saga of Wilma. She’s 84 years old, lives alone in Germany and, every year when the cold northern European winter sets in, she comes to Rasa Sayang. Two days before she arrives, they rearrange the furniture in her favourite suite to conform to her wishes: they have photographs of exactly how she likes it. The number identifying the suite is removed and Wilma’s Suite installed on it. They also have her name tally ready. Then, from the moment she arrives she is welcomed as one of the great family of Rasa Sayang and everyone refers to her by her first name. Everyone also knows exactly where she will be and what she will be doing every minute of the day for the entire six months of her winter vacation in her own tropical Shangri-la. It’s amazing.

Then, just before we left, we found out how such perfection is achieved. When we were walking around with Suleiman, we noticed that whenever he saw a glitch, like a pile of rubble or an unkempt hedge, he clicked it on his cell-phone. Every organization sets its own standards, its own benchmarks of achievement. When these horizons are ignored, when they are lost sight of, the organization falters and gets frayed and worn. It looks old. Obviously, no horizons are lost in this ageless Shangri-la. text & photos by Hugh & Colleen Gantzer October 2012 go now

Turkey happens to be one of the world’s greatest beauties – one that weaves a beautiful story around its white-sand beaches and soaring mountains. Apart from its kebabs, carpets and colourful bazaars, Turkey is also known for rejuvenating bathing hamams. Here’s a lowdown on some hamam baths in Istanbul.

H

amam is the traditional Turkish bath that takes its lineage from the Roman Empire. In the past, it would be the centre where members of the society would interact with each other and at the same time indulge in wellness treatments from the masseurs. This cultural legacy was carried forward by successive regimes especially the Ottoman Empire under whose patronage these

Çemberlita, built in 1584, is hailed as one of the most beautiful baths. Designed by Sinan, it was commissioned by Selim II’s wife Nur Banu as a way of providing financial support for the Atik Valide Sultan Mosque in Üsküdar. Today Çemberlita is still used by Turks, but is most popular with tourists and photographers – it’s a regular location for film and fashion shoots. The baths are sited halfway between the Grand Bazaar and Sultanahmet Square, and are an easy walk from either. The surrounding area is bursting with cafés, tea shops and restaurants. Today, most baths operate separate hours for men and women. In Ottoman times, a breach of segregation was a capital offence. Vezirhan Caddesi. The Siege of Castle Dargan In the North-West of a country known for legendary links courses, sits a classic parkland layout which can hold its own against the best in Europe

I

f you’re busy planning a golf trip to Ireland, and have shortlisted the courses you’re going to include in your itinerary, chances are that Castle Dargan Golf Resort, in the small town of Sligo in the north-west of that country, has not made it to that list. Perhaps you may, curiosity piqued after glancing at this article, go online and check out the golf course’s website: “a parkland layout in Sligo?” You’re likely to ask incredulously. And that’s understandable: why in the world would anyone, going to the land of classic links like Killarney, Narin & Portnoo, Lahinch, Ballybunion, Doonbeg and Old Head,

deign to play an inland parkland course with not a coast in sight? No reason whatsoever, if the single-minded objective of your trip is to experience links golf. But a surfeit of reasons if what you’re looking for a familiar challenge, albeit in radically different conditions. The point is this: unless you’re from Scotland, or England, or have played a lot of links golf in your life, it’s a different game – playing those coastline layouts – and one that requires a different mindset, strategy, and skill set. So you learn the bump-and-run, and how to putt it from 40 feet off the green. But it’s a different ball-

game at Castle Dargan because it does a fine impression of a beast you’ve tackled before. Parkland golf is something you’re likely to be accustomed to, and you feel (even though it may not turn out that way) that your game has the arsenal to tackle a course like Castle Dargan. As you’ve probably guessed by now, it’s a happy illusion. The fact that, all said and done, you’re still in Ireland, and therefore susceptible to the vagaries of the unrelenting wind, and sporadic drizzle make it a very different ball game indeed. Castle Dargan Golf Resort is home to the Premier Parkland Golf Course in the north west of Ireland and opened for play a bit over five years back. Designed by 2011 British Open Champion, and Irish veteran Darren Clarke, the course has met with widespread critical praise. Clarke himself isn’t modest about his creation: “I’m not sure how many courses I will have the opportunity to design, but if this is my last one, I could retire a happy

man. I tried to draw on the great courses I have been fortunate enough to play over the years as well as some of the links I grew up playing. This estate was just perfect for a golf course and I think now the North West has a parkland course to compliment its renowned links,” said Clarke. The 170-acre estate has all the ingredients of a very special golfing sanctuary. The course meanders through fresh water brooks and rolling terrain, embracing the old stone walls and ancient ruins which define this romantic landscape. The course’s natural feel reflects Clarke’s passion for traditional design while its strategic layout reveals his love of shot-making. On the Par 5, sixth hole, the fairway encourages a draw which can kick off the hill and produce a tremendously long drive. The approach to the green from a downhill lie will make the carry over the water quite impressive. A tempting challenge and one of the few risk-reward situations players will encounter during the round. The 11th hole has an elevated tee looking down an extremely narrow haricot shape green surrounded by water and bunkers: not for the faint-hearted, this one. The 15th is a drivable par-4 and Clarke’s so-called signature hole. Not surprisingly the green sits tantalisingly close to the water’s edge. Golfers are also certain to enjoy their time off the course. In addition to the course, the

resort has a 4-star hotel and the club facilities include a practice academy, a golf shop, a spa and club bar that commands dramatic views across the course. So make the detour to Sligo if you can: in any case it’s likely to fall right along the route if you’re playing along the links on the northwest coast. And, after three-four rounds on windswept links courses and merciless gorse, you may just yearn for a tree-lined fairway – a slightly more modern set-up, like the ones you’re accustomed to playing around the world. Sure, links golf may be as pure as the game can get, but at the danger of sounding sacrilegious, let’s just say that secretly, once you’ve been mauled by a few of those, Castle Dargan, might provide just the succour that your parkland-starved soul might need. If for nothing else, then just to regain some confidence, and faith, that you can, in fact, play this game. by Meraj Shah

here's a good chance that the Angkor Wat temple complex might have been lost to the world if French naturalist Henri Mahout did not stumble upon this historic site in 1861. Cambodia's turbulent Pol Pot regime through the 1970s saw this site slip into neglect and pushed it to the verge of decay. Thankfully Cambodia has put behind its recent history and the Angkor Wat complex, has been painstakingly restored and Cambodia can be proud that its national symbol has now become one of the world’s most sought after travel destinations. The Angkor Wat complex is spread over 100 sq kms and was believed to have been built between the 9th and the 13th Century AD. The massive restoration effort was made possible with the participation of International governments. It has transformed Siem Reap that is located just 7 kms from the Angkor complex from a sleepy town into an international tourist hub bursting with top class hotels. Siem Reap has frequent flights from most of South East Asia’s major airports. You will need at least three days to explore all that Angkor has to offer.

The Angkor Wat represents the pinnacle of Khmer architecture and was built under the reign of Suryavarman II in the 12th century and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Its highest tower stands at a staggering height of 669 feet. While almost all of Angkor’s monuments are temples or monasteries, Angkor Wat stands out as the only mausoleum. And while most temples are entered from the east, Angkor has a west-facing entrance. For sheer size and magnitude, the Angkor has few equals anywhere in the world. The temple moat is a whopping 1.5*1.3km (1* 3/4 mile) around, and some 90m (295 ft.) wide. There’s a massive outdoor staircase as you approach the main temple that leads to an area filled with fascinating galleries and basreliefs, the most well-known of these is the one that depicts the mythical churning of the Ocean milk, a Hindu legend. There are also 44

It’s a tricky climb up the temple but as you keep progressing from one level to the next, the views get more stunning. And while it might be tempting to visit this temple as soon as you enter the Angkor Wat complex, we’d suggest that you save the best for last! Even the best cameras invariably don’t quite capture the sheer enormity of this temple and if you want to prove us wrong your best bet is taking one of the hot air balloon rides that give you fantastic perspectives of the temple on a clear day.

Bayon Angkor Wat might be the most popular of Cambodia’s temples but a lot of visitors to the Angkor complex find the huge enigmatic stone faces (usually in groups of four) of the Bayon temple irresistible. This temple lies in the heart of the old Angkor Thom and was built during the reign of Jayavarman VII. In fact the smiling faces full of compassion across the temple are believed to represent King Jayavarman VII and you will find the same faces greet you at some of the complex’s other temples. The Bayon temple is spread over three levels and is almost a perfect square. The first level features an intricate bas-relief gallery that depicts scenes from Khmer wars and vignettes of everyday life from that period. The second level has Apasara reliefs and the third level features 54 small towers with more Apsara faces. The Bayon temple is charming yet mysterious.

Ta Prohm If you find the intense jungle foliage and the exteriors of this temple familiar there’s a good chance you’ve watched the Tomb raider films that feature the lovely Angelina Jolie. Some of the scenes from these films used this dramatic temple as a backdrop. Built in 1186 by Jayavarman VII as a Monastery dedicated to his mother and teacher the temple was originally called Raja Vihara (Royal Temple). The temple’s alluring charm come from the Khmer Spoong (Similar to a Banyan tree) and Charay Vines that fuse with the structures. The temple features 39 towers some of which were unfortunately plundered before the restoration. Affable and erudite international celebrity chef and restaurateur Tetsuya Wakuda’s flagship culinary offering in the heart of Sydney is a place to still the mind and relax over his custom calibrated signature courses. In a rather plainly appointed restaurant with spaces all looking out to his master stroke vistas, a calming and serene Japanese Zen garden, nothing could do better to dimensionalise the simulated exteriors into his dining temple of excellence. The landscaped acres, sprouts of thrilling green, stone installations, graveled pathways and furrowed sand drawings add to the peaceful communion he aspires for through his award winning cuisine with the environment he has created as an eco-synergy. Muted spotlights only lend functionality to the restaurant’s interiors; the few wall art specimens only lead the eye to another space where the Zen garden continues to behold the diner. A haven of tranquility, that takes away the clichéd definitions of design.

Cinnamon Club - London, UK

Not that all the distinguished guests settled here in comfortable chairs are scholars or academicians, but chef-innovator-restaurateur Vivek Singh had chosen the erstwhile Westminster Library as the perfect protagonist for his gastronomic stories. Within the shelves lined with priceless volumes and gilded leather hard covers of this unusual setting, he conducts what is most decidedly the world’s numero uno Indian fine dining restaurant, complete with measured and cleverly crafted signature fare. Diners come here to admire the high ceiling-graced library décor, the interiors designed with geometric flourish at places where deftly soft-lit chandeliers blend harmoniously with the graceful arches. In the Library Bar, the Glenlivet 18YO Single Malt begins a spirited journey into remarkable Indian fine cuisine, culminating into a signing off at the same venue amidst George Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde and WB Yeats. Somewhere on the neat shelves displaying a 1952 Armagnac and a crisp Bowmore 25YO Single Malt, you find moments of repose. Reclining in seasoned leather sofas and petite round settees, you take in the glory of distinction seriously as design and conviction blend here forever! by kishore & smita Iyengar

Message from the massage at highend delhi spas Rejuvenating rubdowns are what the good doctor orders for physical, spiritual and mental well-being. Here’s a lowdown on the best spa massages in the Capital.

Espace Spa, MBD Radisson Blu, Noida

A

spa massage, hitherto considered nothing more than a blissful, self-indulgent luxury for the ladieswho-lunch, is increasingly getting being pressed into service to treat a raft of wellness disorders. Rejuvenating rubdowns are thus increasingly becoming the preferred prescription for physiological and mental well-being. A growing body of research also confirms that a nourishing massage – administered by a trained therapist – is a multi-sensorial journey that relaxes both mind and body. It endows significant “positive effects on depression and anxiety, sleep, stress hormones, immunity and pain relief” according to the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami Medical School, which has conducted over a hundred 100 such studies. A good spa experience, say experts, awakens the touch receptors with gentle therapeutic treatments to ease physical stress, delights vision through a lavish, artistic and soothing environment, sharpens the audio-sensory through mellifluous music, entices the taste buds with delectable and nutritive cuisine, and elevates the smell/vis-

ual sensory with infusion aroma and mood lighting. In keeping with technology’s all-pervasive reach into our lives, massages are increasingly being customized to address niggling pains and strains arising from the overuse of gizmos like the Blackberry, iPhone, computers and laptops. Bandana Sundas, Spa Manager, Heavenly Spa by Westin, Gurgaon iterates that a massage is the original and most ancient of the healing arts. “Regular massages are a distinct way of restoring an individual’s wellbeing. A good massage cleanses the body, stills the mind, refreshes the skin and brings discipline to the moment while relieving stress, anxiety and building immunity.” Alka Katar, Director Spa, Radisson Blu Plaza Delhi, weighs in with an interesting input. She opines that “Positive energy work and holistic healing techniques incorporated in a therapy helps deliver health benefits ranging from system recovery to spiritual growth. Spa therapy given after a yoga/ fitness session acts a journey to revisit the soul and helps in attaining solace and internal balance.”

ITC Grand Chola:

over 8 acres of sprawling urban luxury It’s one of South India’s largest hotels and is all set to change the convention and conference landscape in Chennai.

T

he ITC Grand Chola is a tribute to one of India’s most powerful dynasties – the Cholas. The Chola Empire was probably India’s greatest maritime power and its influence extended beyond Indian shores. The hotel’s design language borrows heavily from the fine architecture of the Chola period that can be found in some of Tamil Nadu’s legendary temples and is equidistant from the city centre and the airport. The ITC Grand Chola is probably India’s largest urban luxury hotel; it’s spread over 8 acres with a built up area of 1.6 million sq ft. With 600 rooms (including 78 serviced apartments) and over 100,000 sq ft of space dedicated for banqueting and conferences the hotel has set a new benchmark in the region and is bound to impact MICE traffic into the city. With Chennai poised to become the world’s largest auto manufacturing hub before the end of the decade and with the city’s IT sector scaling new heights, the timing of this hotel could not have been more appropriate. Chennai is also one of Asia’s healthcare hubs and the launch of the Grand Chola is bound to provide a filip to International healthcare conventions in the city. The Rajendra Chola named after one of the greatest Chola emperors is the centrepiece of the hotel’s conference and convention facility. Spread over 26,450 sq ft, this architectural marvel is the largest pillarless luxury convention space in the country. The hall boasts of a special pre-function area of over 17,000 sq ft and can comfortably handle crowds of about 2000 in theatre style. The hall has dedicated entrances and exits making it suitable for high-security conferences. There’s an exclusive freight elevator that can accomodate loads of upto 2.6 tonnes making it an ideal venue for car launches or celebrities wanting to make a dramatic entrance at mega events. This luxurious space can be further broken down to 8 dedicated conference spaces for crowds ranging from 50 to 2400. The Grand Chola also features other bespoke conference venues like the elegantly appointed Kaveri meeting rooms, sprawling 2632 sq ft that can be divided into four sections to accommodate 12 guests each, in boardroom style. There's also the 980 sq ft Tanjore boardroom with state-of-the-art AV facilities that is perfect up to 24 guests. October 2012 go now
