As an inveterate traveller I’ve been fortunate enough to visit and photograph many of the world’s fabulous countries and cities. Now, looking back on my travels and photographs, I realize there always seems to be one particular image that transports me back to a place I’ve visited and provides me with some of the excitement of my original visit. Although these images might not necessarily be the best I have, they are dear to me because of the magical link they provide – almost like being transported on a magic carpet. They may be very simple or somewhat abstract, without any real sense, but there is a story behind each and every one of them. A story that only I know and only I can relate with, and the image takes me to that story or, sometimes, the story even takes me to that image. This is what I’d like to achieve with Masterpiece. Although, admittedly, this is an intensely personal book, I hope to share my experiences with the reader and take them to the places I’ve visited, hoping they’ll experience the same connections and excitement I’ve experienced. As far as is possible, I’ve placed the images in an ‘alphabetical-sequenceby-country’ order rather than a thematic order – or by following any other logic. This means the reader will never know what’s on the next spread and I hope this adds to the enjoyment. Hersh Chadha

About Hersh Chadha Born in India in 1957, Prof. Hersh Chadha OPM (Harvard), ARPS, discovered he was happiest when alone, travelling with his camera and thoughts, trawling through nature’s rich bounty. To date he has visited some eighty-three countries and 226 cities. He authored Elements I, II and III, a series of photographic books that capture nature in its various moods. The proceeds from the sales of these books go to the WWF. Elements can be found in the libraries of the hallowed centres of learning, Harvard and Stanford, where examples of his work also hang on the walls. His images are also in the possession of a number of eminent personalities – including several members of royalty. This series was followed by Hersh Chadha: Visions of Nature which, as its title suggests, contains a unique selection of his images of nature. His most recent work is With Ink & Film. This work takes the reader on an illuminating journey round the world and features thought-provoking quotations in addition to his imagery. At the same time that Masterpiece was being printed, two other new books were at press. One, Y.O.U., celebrates the beauty of women and the other, Patterns, examines the similarity between the patterns of nature and patterns of man. Hersh Chadha is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS), awarded for exhibiting a high degree of proficiency and demonstrating high technical and visual competence in photography. He has also been actively involved with World Press Photo. He is a man of many facets. He resides in Dubai, in the UAE, where he works with a number of wildlife agencies concerned with conservation of Arabian wildlife – including The Arabian Leopard Trust and the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency (ERWDA) – and has made significant photographic contributions to these agencies. He also runs a global network of business activities from Dubai, and is an avid reader, keen economist and collector of objects d’art. In addition, he contributes to various charities and supports up
and coming sportsmen and women. His desire to establish photography as an art form saw him institute an annual award at the prestigious Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko Kiev University. He is now a visiting professor there, as well as at the American University of Central Asia in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; the Kyrgyzstan National University; and the Institute of Foreign Languages at the International University of Kyrgyzstan. In 2009 the Taras Shevchenko National University celebrated its 175th anniversary and, on this occasion, Hersh Chadha was bestowed the coveted title of Honorary Professor. Recognized for his work on the natural splendour of the earth, Hersh Chadha has pledged nearly 50,000 images to the WWF. His uncompromising concern for the environment and the way man ravages it has made him focus on critical issues such as the preservation of wildlife, the protection of the rain forests, the ozone layer and pollution. As he never tires of saying, ‘Life is beautiful and photography only enhances it.’ Indeed, ‘Have camera, will travel,’ seems to be Hersh Chadha’s eloquent mission statement.
