THINK GREEN GREEN BELT Green Belt – A Big Step to Mitigate Pollution MRPL (Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited) has recently developed a Green Belt around the entire Refinery. The Green Belt consists of plant species that has been specially selected to blend with the local flora. Some of the species are expected to act as bio-indicators. This is a comprehensive programme that has been launched by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited for developing a Green Belt around Refinery. The main objective of setting up a green belt is to mitigate fugitive emission or accidental release, control soil erosion, to facilitate wastewater utilization, control noise pollution and to improve the aesthetic view of the Refinery. As per as environmental requirements, at present more than 300 acres of area are covered under Green Belt. Innovative strategies were used for selection of plant species for the Green Belt. This was done by assessing their adaptability to local conditions and by NEERI’s (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) recommendations. The plant species are required to have the following attributes:
1
Fast growing large evergreen canopy cover, large leaf index and resistance to pollutants.
2
Adaptable to Agro-geo climatic conditions to preserve the ecological balance of the region.
3
Species like mango and shisum to be included as potential bio indicators of pollution.
More than 50 varieties of plants, which are locally adaptable, have been planted in the Green Belt. Acasia, Cashew, Gulmohor, Jackfruit, Teak, Soapnut are few varieties that can be seen in the belt. Therefore, these Green Belts can really help us to make our world a better place for you, for me and for the entire Human race.

Architectural Burj Khalifa Burj Khalifa also known as Burj Dubai is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is the tallest man-made structure in the world as it is 2,717
feet tall. The main design of Burj Khalifa is
derived from patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. The triple-lobed footprint of the building was inspired by the flower Hymenocallis. Some special features that are built up to beautify Burj Khalifa are the Dubai Fountain, Observation deck and Burj Khalifa Park. This particular master piece is definitely one of the structures for which mankind can feel proud of after creating it.
Petronas Tower The Petronas Twin Towers also known as the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are the tallest twin buildings in the world. The Petronas Towers were built on the site of Kuala Lumpur's race track. Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations. The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass facade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia's Muslim religion. The towers feature a sky bridge between the two towers on 41st and 42nd floors, which is the highest 2-story bridge in the world. The bridge is 170
m (558 ft) above the ground and 58 m (190 ft) long. These two twin towers are a matter of great pride for the people of Malaysia.

Maa is back with her Blessings The season of pomp and happiness has again arrived to cleanse away all our sorrows and pains. It s again time to gear up our beautiful city Kolkata with lights, pandals and clamor of enjoyment. Traditional Bonedi Durga Pujas, in Bengali households, is an interesting feature of Kolkata s heritage. There are some pujas which dates back 200-250 years. Though time has taken it s toll but these pujas are still performed with utmost divinity. The Bonedi Bari pujas are very close to the heart of every Bengali and though Durga Puja is highly commercialised now, but these pujas will always lay a picture of heritage & culture. Durga puja is celebrated in West Bengal since the medieval period. By the mid of 18th century, the national festival of the Bengalis became an occasion for the rich Babus of Kolkata to flaunt their wealth. The first Durga Puja seems to have been celebrated by Bhabananda, the ancestor of Maharaja Krishnachandra of Nadia in about 1606.
The puja at Shovabazar
Rajbari, is amongst the oldest Pujas. The
first Devi worship was done by Raja Nabakrishna Deb of Sobhabazar of Calcutta in honor of Lord Clive in the year 1757. Clive offered the puja to glorify his victory in the Battle of Plassey. He was unable to do so in a Church because the only Church in Kolkata at that time was destroyed by Siraj-udDaulah.

Another significant Bonedi Durga Puja is of Dhar
family (250 years old). The Dhars originated from Bikrampur of undivided Bengal which still continues to be known as Ashoknagar. A shocking incident changed the heartless rituals of sacrifice in the Dhar family. Kashinath
Traditional Durga Puja being performed in families for years have interesting anecdotes which led them to initially start the Puja. It is said that the Laha
Barir Durga
Puja, one of the famous Pujas of Kolkata started some 170 years ago. One will find a unique form of the Goddess here
Dhar performed Durga Puja at his residence with full
which is the attraction of the Laha Barir Durga Puja. Here
traditional rituals. On Ashtami, human sacrifice was common and was considered as the most important part of the puja.
Durga is seen in the arms of Lord Shiva and her eyes closed.
This sinister practice ended through a miraculous happening. On such a Ashtami, a child was used for the human sacrifice. Despite several attempts the child could not be beheaded. When this news reached the zamindar, he fell unconscious.
The traditional belief is Mother Durga bestowed wealth & prosperity to the Low (Laha) family. The puja rituals start with the family idol "Jaya Jaya Maa" being worshipped in the Natmandir.
On regaining his consciousness, he prayed the Goddess asking her the reason for the omen. Maa Durga then appeared before him and asked him to stop sacrifices and told him that she had placed her hand over the childÂ’s neck to protect it and she has wiped her hand in a cloth which is behind the idol. On hearing this, the zamindar rushed to the mandap (podium) and found the blood stained cloth. Henceforth, human sacrifice was stopped in the Dhar family.
The Ghosh
family durga puja also known as
Pathuriaghata Durga Puja was started by Ishwar Ram Lochan Ghosh. The puja dates back to 160 years and still continues to worship the deity in a "tin-chaala" pattern, meaning the devi & his siblings with the demon all belong to the same arch. The idol is decorated with an age-old style using thermocol or "Daker Saaj".
Durga Puja means an occasion when we hear the familiar sounds of Dhak, perform our traditional Dhunuchi (incense bowl) dance along with the foot-tapping beats, when our hearts get full with the aroma of Shiuli & the swaying Kashful fields reminds of Maa coming home. It is the time when the rich & the poor embrace each other & celebrate the most memorable time of the year.
