pring is indeed nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s party!’ For, it is the time when the Earth seems to be singing soulful tunes in all forms. If you can feel that in the chirping of birds and colours of flowers and leaves, you should by all means let that reflect on yourself too. So as we say goodbye to winter, with thanks for making spring seem all the more pleasant, let’s welcome this change by letting colours shine on us too. After those gloomy winter days and chilly nights and layers of woollens, it’s now time to let

Master some key makeup moves from the most recent trends of the season that take you from work to party mode in no time words ha n sa m akhi j a n i
In
times like these where business and pleasure often mingle, there’s hardly a minute to make a leisurely switch. You have to look formal by day and fun by night. There are times when you have to attend a cocktail party straight after work or make your presence felt at an official afterhours event. Keep a small grooming pouch in your bag to make a smooth transition from work to play with least fuss. With a little know-how and some makeup tricks up your sleeve, it’s possible to look ravishing, wherever you are.
Face files
When it’s bright and sunny outside, it may show on your skin in the form of red blotches, patches and dark spots. Using a BB Cream is a great way to make your skin look fresh and eventoned while nourishing and protecting it from the sun at the same time. Unlike foundations, BB Creams sit very comfortably on the skin for a long time without making it look made up. If you tend to be out for work, dust on some loose powder over it to keep your complexion matte. Inglot's Fusion System Blush & Illuminator, `1,150, makes life much easier as it comes with a matte blush that can be used during the day and an illuminator which can be applied over it for those after-work soirees. Work with tones of corals, peaches and pinks and steer clear of bronze and browns this season. A light pink blush like Lancôme’s French Ballerine Blush Highlighter in Rose Ballerine brings about a natural freshness on the face; keep it handy.

If you are one of those who aren’t big on lipsticks for the day, then keep your lips hydrated and moist with a lip balm for work. Apply lip balm and clean it up after five minutes with a dry napkin. This will give you a great finish from your lipstick. Lip colours like MaxFactor’s Colour Elixir Giant Pen Stick, `675, are strongly pigmented and make the lips pop after you’re done with those corporate meetings. We love it especially because it allows you to line the lips with precision before filling them in. Well-defined lips can instantly brighten up your face. Use bold lip shades like red, deep pink, coral and fuchsia. You can also try nude lip gloss as it works very well for the office. And once you are done with work, all you need to do is refresh the gloss and amplify your eyes a bit with a thick kohl pencil for a glamorous party look. Nails can be a little tricky. While nude and pastel shades are appropriate for a conservative work space, bright hues will be the talk of an off-beat office. Your safest bet is a French manicure as it is classy enough for both work and play. You can try French manicure nail stickers from Sephora. They last for more than a week and come off with ease with a regular nail enamel remover. Another neat trick is to apply a quick coat of clear nail polish over whatever colour you have on already. This makes the nails shiny and glossy, making them look glamorous. You can make up for the safe nails with smouldering eyes.

Knees, elbows, heels and neck… We tend to overlook some areas on our body and only pay attention to our face. In the summer, when skin shows more, make sure you use a body scrub at least once a week and slather it on with lotion. This will make them look supple and firm. To rock those sleeveless tops and short skirts, it’s ideal to use a shimmer lotion like L’Occitane’s Cherry Blossom Shimmering Lotion, `1,800. The shimmer is subtle enough to wear to the office and gives the skin a beautiful dewy sheen afterwards. You can also mix bronzing powder or liquid bronzer with a regular body lotion in case you don’t have a shimmer lotion. If you have discolouration and tanning issues, add a little foundation to the lotion to ensure your face, arms and legs look like they are the same shade. Finally, don’t forget to apply an interesting perfume like Marc Jacobs Dot that lingers on from morning till night. And you’re ready to say cheers!
Eyes
A very big trend this season is to skip eyeliner on the top lid. Just rim the eyes with kohl and apply sweeps of mascara for perky peepers. Keep a good mascara handy, like Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara, to complete the look. This lowmaintenance look works very well for the work place and can easily be improvised for dinner and drinks afterwards. To make your eyes look bigger (and to trick your boss into thinking you’re awake for that morning meeting), use a white eye pencil on your lower lid before applying kohl on the outer edge. With a metallic eye shadow you can go from simple to sensational in two minutes. Champagne tones suit fair and wheatish skin while gunmetal shades look interesting on dusky skin. You can use a kohl pencil or liquid eye liner line on your top lids for a night-around-town after work. We recommend L’Oreal Kajal Magique, `245. You can smudge it after applying to create a soft smokey eye look that works great with soft, glossy lips.

Beyond the bangs
There’s a lot more to hairstyles than a snip here and there. Here’s your ultimate guide to rocking hair at every stage of your life words h a n s a m a k h i j a n i
Did
you know that there is actually a science behind hair styling? When you go to a professional hair salon, they don’t just recommend the ‘trendy’ hair style. They would usually suggest what would look good on you, keeping your age, hair type and texture in mind. However, we often fall into the trap and either go for the popular cuts or stick to wearing our tresses the way we’ve always done. We show you how to make the most of your hair, experiment with styles, and nourish them suitably – no matter what your age.

20s
Your style: The world is your oyster as
far as haircuts go. From your teens to late 20s, hair health is usually at its best. The rate of hair growth is at its peak – even if you choose your cut on a whim, you won’t be stuck with a bad style for long. Don’t be afraid to play around with length and styles. You can pull off slicked back hair, high ponytails, top knots and tight buns with as much elan as curls and waves. Your colour: This is the time to be a wild child and experiment with vibrant colours. Streaks of reds and blues exude youth. If you prefer to be understated, go for lowlights in shades of purple and burgundy, which will even be appropriate for the workplace. An ash blonde streak at the nape of your neck is also a good idea and can be easily concealed during those corporate meetings. Your care: The usual trinity of hair oil, shampoo and conditioner is all you will need. Make sure you choose products suitable to your hair texture. If your hair is coloured, make sure you stay away from the sun and swimming pool and use a colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner. While using blow dryers, straightening irons, curling tongs or crimpers, make sure to use heat protection products before styling. In your diet, make sure you include protein sources like eggs, soya, paneer and beans. Also, keep in mind that crash dieting and starvation diets wreak havoc on the skin and hair. Strands become brittle and prone to splitends. Even if you want to be slim, it is essential for your hair’s health to include a little bit of fats in your meals.

precedence in this decade. Choose a hair cut that fits your lifestyle and is easy to maintain. Mid-length layers, shoulderlength hair and bobs work well for on-themove lives. If you want long locks, keep them layered so that your tresses have some body to them. Be religious about trimming to keep split-ends at bay – once every six weeks is sufficient. Soft waves and curls work to make you look younger. You can also try back combed styles, bouffants, loose buns, side buns and braided styles for formal occasions. Avoid short, pixie haircuts. They will make you look older by drawing focus on fine lines on the face that usually develop in your thirties. Your colour: You probably start spotting those grey strands in the mirror every now and then. Global hair colour with ammonia-free formula are the order of the day. Black and deep browns suit Indian skin tones to a tee. Try and stick to a hair colour that’s closest to your natural tinge – you still want to look like yourself after all. If volume is a concern and you don’t have too many grey strands, opt for soft highlights by mixing two or three tints of the same colour. Your care: Many women start losing volume at this stage, so it would be appropriate to switch to volumising shampoos and conditioners. Apart from the usual shampoo, conditioner and oil, begin regular hair spa sessions, preferably once in three months. Minimise the use of styling products like hair sprays to preserve the integrity of your hair. Thirties are the busiest for most women and it is important to relax. Did you know that stress leads to premature graying and hair loss? Make it a point to de-stress every now and then. We recommend head massages at a salon to rejuvenate and enhance blood circulation to the scalp and roots.

your wrinkles and fine lines begin to deepen. Your hairstyle at this stage can work to your advantage or make you look older. Face-framing cuts make you seem younger. Layers around the face also take the attention away from wrinkles – try bangs if you want to keep your hair long. Whatever you do, avoid styles that slick the hair back. Ponytails and high ponytails will also make you look old, contrary to popular opinion. Poker straight hair also weighs your face down. Strive to create texture and dimension in the hair by scrunching and tousling with the help of mousse. Classics like sophisticated chignons are a safe bet. Your colour: Did you know that the right kind and technique of hair colour can create the illusion of fuller, bouncier hair? Ask your colour expert at the salon to colour the inner layers of your hair a shade lighter than the outer layers. This will help you fake volume in the hair like nothing else. However, make sure you use a gentle colour formula to be kinder to your hair. Your care: As you age, your hair texture suffers and the strands become weak and brittle. Add a hair serum to the equation and at the salon, go for deepconditioning hot oil treatments to keep your hair well-nourished. Your hair care products should be gentle and free from parabens (preservatives) and sulphates (foaming agents). Protein and keratin fortified shampoos and conditioners will help maintain the strength of your strands. Include rich sources of Omega-3 essential fatty acids in your diet, like eggs, fish, nuts and seeds. If you have lost hair, ask your doctor if you can have biotin supplements. dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014

On
haute spot The season of chilly waves has come to an end and it is time to welcome the new leaves, flowers, singing birds and lots of colour. Let the happy tunes of the nature reflect in your style too as you celebrate spring and summer words g a r i m a v e r m a
a spring summer song
If
spring is all about innocence, summer is for exuberance. After a testing stretch of cold days, the confusingly pleasantness of spring, that feel of summer in the Sun and winter in the shade, is indeed a poem straight from nature heart. Inhale that sweet smell of earth after a rain and add to the song with colours on yourself. This season opens with many opportunities to be a different girl every moment. Be the dainty darling with oh-so-girly flowing dresses in floral prints or be the pretty girl, exuding all charm and cheerfulness in soothing pastel shades. After that be another girl and make a switch to a sexy party number to leave people confounded and admiring at the same time. You can also let the retro girl in you show her spark and spunk in rhythmic or crazy graphics. If you thought sports wear was all about track pants and boring tops, you can take a few tips from the following pages to be a head-turner in sports ensemble too. At any moment, if you find yourself facing dilemma, just go the safe and ever-right and always-in-fashion combination of black and white. With all these cards up your sleeve, you would surely be in tune with the freshness of spring and shine of summer.

Blue is the colour!
Swarovski’s Spring/Summer 14 collection celebrates colours like never before. Garima Verma talks to Nathalie Colin, Swarovski’s Creative Director, to know more
Q. The colour blue and fringes seem to be the highlight of this collection. What were the inspirations behind the choices? Actually, most of our spring summer collections are very colourful. For this season, we wanted to celebrate two colours particularly – blue and gold. Each season, we are using colours as real materials by themselves. We are changing, growing and mixing colours to create beautiful and surprising pieces. Art was the key inspiration when we started to work on the SS14 collection. This collection reflects the origins of art – tribal and primitive, mixed with a modern and urban mood. Fringes are totally inspired by the tribal art. It permits us to have a very feminine movement. During our research, we discovered that the tribal and primitive arts used bold colours, especially indigo blue, coming from the monochrome art movement. That’s why blue (our key colour) is used in this collection in pure, intense monochrome. Q. How many designers, from which parts of the globe worked to bring the idea into shape? My team comprises 50 designers from various cultures and backgrounds. It is very interesting to work with so many different people. It allows us to learn from each other every day. The whole process takes about six months from the first research and sketches till the product development.
26 dlfpromenade.com/ mar-may 2014
Q. What generally inspires Swarovski’s collections? To me, music is a major source of inspiration. For each season, I create a music playlist which reflects the collection. Travelling is also essential to my work as I get to know foreign cultures, local craftsmanship and stunning colour palettes. I am also fed by the ongoing art scene, be it photography, painting or ballet. I believe creative persons are like sponges. Last but not the least, people are a source of inspiration. They are essential. I look at the way they act, talk and live. Sometimes you find your inspiration across the globe and sometimes I just have to have a look over my window. Q. Could you share briefly for our readers the journey of Swarovski jewellery, right from the origin of the idea to the finished product? First of all, we have an idea exchange with my team where we try to find inspirations and themes. I really enjoy this part of my job. It’s an interesting process – sharing ideas with my team because these are people from very different cultures. It’s this mix which permits us to create very different types of pieces and seduce a very large public. Then we make sketches. And after we choose our favourites we see if the piece is technically feasible with the marketing department among others. And then we let the technical experts work their magic.

Vietnam en vogue Many still consider Vietnam to be a budget, backpacker’s destination but Angelina and Brad Pitt’s famous sojourn in the country broke the illusion words d e va n s h i m o d y
If
Vietnam’s good enough for Angelina Jolie, it’s good enough for us lesser mortals. So I arrive in Ho Chi Minh City, the Sofitel Saigon Plaza stretches out a Mercedes limo to fetch me from the airport. The chauffeur presents me the music menu. I request ‘classical.’ Madonna blares forth. Vietnam seems in such accelerated modernisation that 80s music classifies as classical.
52 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
The perfect start Sofitel Saigon Plaza, however, traps time in its Boudoir Lounge where the pink afternoon affair unfurls with extravagances befitting Marie-Antoinette’s intimate convocations. Raspberry éclairs, strawberry pastries, pink punches and marshmallows do the trick for food lovers as they taste heavenly. After this afternoon affair, things get riskier still in the embrace of the new suites if you succumb to the charm of caressing sheets and the plum-coloured stand-alone tub. I was left enamoured with Sofitel’s French fine-dining restaurant L’Olivier offering chocolate sorbet as intensely dark as sin itself. No salvation at just-launched Pullman too where Chef Shane rolls out the ice cream trolley pedalling 30 flavours. I demanded prune-armagnac. Done.
Pleasing Senses Next stop is Six Senses Con Dao. This place owes its fame much to Brangelina’s stay here, although the real star is the resort itself. Serpentine lanes, pooled villas and ocean incited by thunderous skies create a dream-like picture. Things are hotter still at the restaurant where the extraordinary Vietnamese Hot Pot happens. Pick from an assortment of ingredients from an enormous platter and watch it cook in a clay pot on a flame at your table.
Prison tour Next morning my butler Phi Anh recommends prison tours. A visitor to Con Dao cannot languish in a villa costing $1,500 per night oblivious of the tremendous sufferings endured here. The notorious ‘Tiger Cages’ leave me appalled. The legend has it that Americans and French inflicted tortures of extreme brutality on Vietnamese political prisoners. It is difficult to believe that amid these inexpressibly beautiful sights such horrors transpired, almost an embodiment of the Biblical Garden of Eden with its naturally accompanying Evil.
Meeting the monster At Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, however, even the evil ‘Green-eyed monster’ of Shakespeare’s Othello seems gentle. The hillside embedded with the resort’s hilltop villas itself seems a sleepy humpbacked dragon (of the Scottish rather than
Vietnamese variety). Returning to sleep at night, I recall Charon of Greek myth ferrying souls across the river Styx to the world of eternal repose. Despite all those thoughts running through my mind, I am enlivened each morning by restaurant manager Trang’s vitality and the punchiest Vietnamese coffee ice cream.
Food for the soul As I leave to dine at neighbouring Anlam Resort, young food and beverages assistant Gayan says adorably, “If the food there is not nice, just return
and we’ll prepare something you like, however late it is.” Sigh! Anlam’s cuisine is impressive and is served up with sagas of how their guests keep weeping with content. After subjection to this Oprah-style sentimentality, one definitely needs a Six Senses facial to relax the clenched jaw muscles and massage to soften tired shoulders. Besides, one had better look her best if she was lunching at sister resort Ana Mandara with Indian EAM Jeevan, supposedly the most handsome man in Vietnam! dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014

voyage
Hoi’s heritage I next progress to UNESCO World Heritage Site Hoi An, streaking across the river to its best-located resort Anantara. The purpose-built peaches and cream colonial structure has a French-chic Riverside Café where Vietnamese Chef Vien’s expertise at Middle-Eastern cuisine is displayed in soft pita stuffed with grilled veggies. At the spa, Hang kneads tired shoulders as skillfully as Chef does breads. Cooler still is the barman’s astonishingly airy pineapple-banana-coconut-ginger smoothie. I must return to this place for unmatched Vietnamese iced coffee, Chef ’s pho – that marvellous Vietnamese noodle soup and for Anantara’s ‘Dining by Design’, the best-crafted dining experience in the whole of Vietnam.
Let’s go posh It’s now time for The Nam Hai, perhaps Vietnam’s poshest address. The villas, in dark wood and white are beautiful. The bathrooms have fragrant designer toiletries; basins glazed in brown egg shells that look lined in DKNY bags; and gardened outdoors showers. At turn-down, white curtains enclose the
54 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
bed like a gushing waterfall. The recent typhoon also couldn’t liquidate my delight. I’m amazed by nature’s fury as galloping waves charge towards the shore where palms desperately flay their arms and thrash the sands in frustration, which I witness through glass floor-toceiling panelling as I soak in my bed. Amid destroyed trees and decimated parks, service at The Nam Hai remains seamless as if even a leaf hasn’t fluttered.
Culinary retreat The next stop, Fusion Maia, is wittily presented as one of the ‘Healing Hotels of the World’, its unique concept being unlimited complimentary spa treatments. Though it is renowned as a spa destination, it’s actually a clandestine culinary retreat. Executive chef Dung offers unparalleled Vietnamese cuisine, wonderfully presented: coconut curry or more originally, coconut crème brûleé in a coconut shell. Striking too is his turmeric-tempered Hoi An noodle soup that compels slurping with such vigorous enthusiasm that I’m stricken with stains. The meal attains its pinnacle with phenomenal Vietnamese coffee mousse.
Admiring architecture From Fusion Maia’s luxurious heights I plunge to decadent depths at Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula, staggering and staggered down a hill. Celebrity designer Bill Bensley’s masterpiece, an extravaganza of architecture, interior decor and landscaping, costs an astronomical $200 million. It is an elaboration of intricate designs, craft and flights of fancy. Surely would not be an exaggeration to say this is among the world’s most stupendously and spectacularly-designed resorts. Restaurant Citron in tangy lime and lemon thrusts out balconies shaped like overturned Vietnamese hats giving thrilling ocean views. Vietnam’s only lady Masterchef presides over Citron whilst Michelin-starred French chef Michel Roux just launched his Chef ’s Table at La Maison 1888’s. Bensley’s playful décor is more delicious as he turns the restaurant’s private dining spaces into bedrooms of this ‘house’s’ three children’. One son is purportedly a voyager and his ‘room’ explores the travel theme. The ‘accountant son’s’ room features the accounts motif.
Celebrity designer Bill Bensley’s Intercontinental Danang Sun Peninsula is an extravaganza of architecture, costing $200 million
Sheer fantasy is their sister’s room. In the lagoon spa’s submarine-like therapy suites, therapist Saifon’s nimble hands whirl round your back like a warm ocean current and her facials leave your skin silken. They don’t know it yet, but they are a Destination Spa, amongst the world’s best. This excessively original resort celebrates drama. There’s fairytale too, the 37-year-old French GM Arnaud being charm incarnate. Tragically, his subordinates, save sales director Siddharth Ketkar, are clowns; service is shambolic. Prince Charming surely belongs in a fairytale, not a circus.
Real fairytale Service is swift and discreet at Banyan Tree Lang Co. Winnie and Tam alight like fairies when required and vanish magically after their duty is done. Winnie escorts me into my villa and insists on soothing ginger tea. She reappears with a tray, but just as she’s entering my villa the phone rings. The call lasts 30 minutes. All the while Winnie waits patiently outside, watching the outdoors jacuzzi, bearing the tea-tray. Here’s world-class service the world’s priciest private island resorts can’t match. dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014

voyage
Thai time I’ve not wearied of Vietnamese food. Can one? But for those partial to Thai cuisine, Saffron offers perhaps the most accomplished Thai cuisine around. Lady Chef Porntip’s Pad Thai has me hopelessly bound in its savoury strands. Italian beachfront restaurant Azura has sexy Monte-Carloesque terraces and a Vietnamese lady chef Ly effecting gorgeous Mediterranean vegetables.
Perfect efficiency Hue is where I next head to. Enchantment begins with heritage hotel La Résidence’s gracious GM Minh. With a magician’s skill, the sole Vietnamese GM I meet, runs its most efficient hotel operations. He also arranges my tour of Hue’s UNESCO World Heritage royal mausoleums, pagodas and the Forbidden City. Over supper, with the GM on the riverfront terrace, young sous-chef Hai artfully presents authentic Hue cuisine. The flavour adding to my food is Minh’s subtle humour. He absorbs me in Hue’s fabled culinary heritage, telling me that Nguyen Emperor Minh Manh had 300 concubines (and 142 children). Satisfying his entire harem regularly was arduous even for the Nguyen dynasty’s mightiest emperor and competition was ferocious among the ladies. So concubines would prepare desserts and she who produced the finest had the emperor for a midnight feast. Also, two mandarins attended the dining
56 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
The suites at Sofitel Legend Metropole are full of finery and finesse, with signature Hermès toiletries in marbled bathrooms where ornate tubs stand emperor and slipped residues from his 50odd dinner dishes into their flouted sleeves to take home where royal recipes were emulated, facilitating their circulation.
Hanoi Next on the itinerary is a city that admirably preserves its magnificent French colonial architecture and flavour – Hanoi. And, the Mövenpick brings unobtrusive modernity to it. It has sleek stylish suites, with flashes of colour. This could well be in Europe. Except, staff is slicker than in Europe. They’d have to be, with a dynamic young GM who is as efficacious as he is courteous. He makes things happen, including my whirlwind tour of Hanoi’s conveniently proximal 1,000-year-old Temple of Literature.
A befitting end The grand finale is at Indo-China’s fabled abode of grandeur, the heritage Sofitel Legend Metropole, receptor of royals (recently Prince Andrew), stars, literary figures and awards too. A staff member says, “When I joined four months back,
we’d won 18 awards. Now we have 30.” Wouldn’t you when your airport transfer is a BMW, stocking can-rival-Laduré macarons? They’ve also Indo-China’s most sumptuous suites, some Somerset Maughan, Graham Greene and Charlie Chaplin occupied in the quaint heritage wing. I adore my suite, full of finery and finesse with signature Hermès toiletries in marbled bathrooms where ornate tubs stand. I sneak out to breakfast at Le Beaulieu that recreates a traditional French brasserie, including Parisian-style terraces. Then to Italian restaurant Angelina for the only traditional Italian pizza I’ve had in aeons. Valrhona Manjari ice cream retards my return to my room, which I’m made to exit again for a session at the colonial spa and for Vietnamese cuisine at Spices Garden that exudes the languid aura of a bygone era. I’m also lured by the lush rooftop garden on the poolside gazebo – just the place where to settle, on a wrought iron bench, reading, unless you’re throwing a private party. Change to
health
You have repeatedly been through the drill to lose weight: Eat less, exercise more. But for keeping the results permanent, a better idea is to skip truant foods from your diet altogether words a a r t i k a p u r s i n g h
Some
of the best-tasting foods are actually some of the worst in terms of fat and calories. These ‘bad’ foods can make you pile on the flab and sabotage even the best laid diet plans. Research shows that people get full by the amount of food they eat and not by the number of calories they take in. Cut calories in your favourite foods by lowering the amount of fat or increasing the amount of fibre-rich ingredients in the process, such as vegetables or fruits. Before we even realise it, we add extra calories to our bodies in more ways than one. An extra tablespoon of salad dressing can add 75-100 calories. An extra tablespoon of butter adds 102 calories and that one-ounce bag of chips with your sandwich adds as many as 162 calories.
Stay away from these
“You should avoid sugar, unhealthy snacks such as chips or pretzels and cookies,” cautions dietician Dr Shikha Sharma. “Even ghee, processed foods such as cheese and sauces and aerated or sweetened drinks should be steered clear of.” It is these calories that get stored as stubborn fat in our bodies. Many people throw in the towel on weight loss because they feel hungry when they eat less. “But there is another way,” says celebrity fitness trainer Leena Mogre. “Aim for a slow and steady weight loss by decreasing calorie intake while maintaining an adequate nutrient intake and increasing physical activity.” It is possible to cut calories without eating less nutritious food. The key is to eat foods that will fill you up without consuming too many calories.
Keep a check
The number of calories in a particular amount or weight of food is called ‘calorie density’ or ‘energy density.’ Low-caloriedense foods don’t pack a lot of calories into each bite. Foods that have a lot of water or fibre are usually low in calorie density. They will help you feel full without an unnecessary amount of calories. Wheat and rice are probably your carb staples, but clinical nutritionist Dr Ishi Khosla, founder of Whole Foods, warns that limiting your grains to just these two isn’t a good idea. “Glycemic index measures the ability of a given food item to raise blood sugar levels. Polished rice, refined wheat flour (maida), semolina (sooji), noodles, idli, dosa, naan, cornflakes and corn are high glycemic index carbohydrates,” explains Dr Khosla.
Quinoa is extremely adaptable. Use it as an alternative to rice or poha, add it to salads, casseroles, desserts or even use it to thicken your soups and stews. Quinoa flour can be also added to bread and flour mixes chef Sanjeev Kapoor
Wonder seed: Quinoa
Swasti Aggarwal, chef and regional head at DLF Promenade’s Foodhall suggests substituting those high glycemic index carbs with healthier options. “Quinoa is a seed but can be used like a grain! It can be used in place of rice or couscous for a healthier, lighter and almost no-carb option. It is high in protein, gluten-free and very easy to cook (boils just like rice). Have with any curry in an Indian meal or toss with some greens, nuts and veggies to make a yummy and nutritious salad,” she says. One of the most striking features of this South American grain is its exceptionally high protein content (16-18 per cent). Quinoa contains a balanced set of essential amino acids making it an unusually complete protein source. It’s a good option for vegetarians looking to increase their protein intake. dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014

Cook healthy, go traditional
Actor Kareena Kapoor Khan is a fan of non-wheat flours too. “Bajra, ragi and amaranth don’t make me feel sluggish the way wheat does. Ragi is particularly rich in calcium and almost comparable to milk and bajra in iron,” she says. You can choose from Foodhall’s massive range of organic, gluten-free, high protein, low-carb and low fat specialty flours to make your chapatis and breads. Jowar, bajra, ragi, atta, besan, almond flour and various mixes that you will find here are a healthy alternative to wheat. Also, wheat, rice and some grains are not really as healthy as they are believed to be. “The other way to eat healthy is to cook healthy,” says celebrity chef Kunal Kapoor of Leela Kempinski. “Steam cooking is a better option. It is a moist cooking method where there is minimal loss of nutrients and flavours. Also, extra virgin olive oil in place of traditional cooking mediums like ghee or refined oil is a wonderful idea,” he adds. Talking about the benefits of olive oil, Swasti says, “It lowers cholesterol and prevents cancer besides adding an amazing flavour and texture to food. EVOO, available at Foodhall, cannot be heated up too much but can easily be used in stir frying on low flame and is also yummy in its raw form. Dribble it over a whole-wheat pizza, add to your favourite salad, rub it on your fish before grilling or lightly stir fry some fresh pasta. EVOO is a miracle oil!”
Foodhall’s whole seeds provide essential vitamins, minerals and proteins required in your daily diet 60 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
Be A smart eater
Swasti also suggests replacing ingredients with clever alternatives, rather than denying your body essential nutrition. “Buy Foodhall’s low-fat yogurt to make your favourite smoothie. Just add the yogurt, some frozen fruits and a teaspoon of honey for a purely delicious beverage with a low glycemic index,” she says. Dr Khosla, however, says that not all fats are villainous. “Fats are a source of energy and help maintain healthy organs, skin and hair. Fats also help your body absorb vitamin A, D, E, and K. It’s okay to include some oils and fats in the food, but remember that fats contain twice as many calories as proteins or carbohydrates. So choose foods that are either low in fat or fat free,” she says. Dr Sharma adds, “Always go for good fats — omega-3 fats found in tofu, walnuts, flaxseed, salmon, soybean and pumpkin seeds.” So, banish the food villains and go for heroes to keep looking like a million bucks and feel even better.

fit & fab
For a
flat tummy Winter excesses would have surely taken a toll on your waistline. Now get it back in desired shape to flaunt those lovely summer dresses
The
season of overindulgence is almost over. With the overcoats and heavy woollens no longer an option available to hide that extra inch or two that you might have gained on your curves, it is time to be the svelte self once again. No, we are not asking you to starve yourself or make the treadmill your temporary home for a few weeks. All you need to do is go on a juice diet (a really tasty one at that) for a few days. The all-star ingredients in fresh juices can easily combat the unpleasant side effects of overindulgence. In case you feel to treat yourself royally over the breakfast too after a night full of feasting, instead of a slice of left-over pumpkin pie, try one of these five simple and delicious juices which help calm your stomach and decrease bloating.
62 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
apple cider vinegar
Raw apple cider vinegar helps promote optimal digestion and encourages the growth of healthy bacteria in our body. You only need one tablespoon a day to prevent bloating. Anti-Bloat Elixir If you find yourself bloated the morning after indulging, try this elixir for a quick fix. Ingredients •2 cups filtered water • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar •2 tbsp chia seeds •2 tsp raw honey Directions: Let chia seeds soak at least for 30 minutes. Then whisk all ingredients together.
spinach
Potassium helps flush excess sodium out of your cells. Bananas, spinach and coconut water are all high in potassium. Spinach Coconut Smoothie This smoothie contains a heavy dose of potassium to bring down bloat in a hurry. Ingredients •2 handfuls of spinach •1 banana, preferably frozen •1 cup cucumber, peeled and cubed • ½ cup pineapple chunks, fresh or frozen •1 cup coconut water •¼ cup freshly-squeezed orange juice Directions: Mix all ingredients in a blender and enjoy.

To restore natural beauty and banish the extra puff, try a juice with pineapple in it. Pina Colada Smoothie This delicious smoothie helps reduce bloating and inflammation with the powerhouse combination of pineapple, banana and coconut water. Ingredients •1 orange, peeled •1/3 cup coconut water •1 banana •1 cup pineapple chunks, frozen or fresh Optional: Add a handful of spinach to add even more potassium and increase the nutritional value. Corbett National Park Uttarakhand
Touted as one-of-its-kind, the Reserve was established in 1936 and has the distinction of being India’s first National Park. Originally called Hailey National Park, the park was christened Ramganga National Park and renamed again in 1957 after Jim Corbett (1875–1955), the legendary British hunter-turned- conservationist, author and naturalist. The reserve inspired the India-wide Project Tiger programme that started in 1973 for conservation of wild tigers and saw the creation of 22 other Reserves. Wildlife commonly found here includes wild elephants (200 to
300 live in the Reserve), sloth bears, langurs, rhesus macaques, peacocks, otters and more. The forest abounds with several types of deer – chital (spotted deer), sambars, hog deer and barking deer. You might also see leopards, crocodiles, hippopotamus, monitor lizards, wild boars and jackals. The Ramganga Reservoir attracts large numbers of migrating birds.
Tips 1. The best time to visit Corbett is from November to May. The park is closed from mid-June to mid-November. 2. Corbett provides ample opportunities for hiking, elephant ride, angling and river rafting. 3. Tourists are not allowed to walk inside the park. However, jeep safaris are a safe and convenient way to explore. 4. Trekking, though not allowed, can be done in the trails outside the park. 5. There are also other restrictions. Please check with the authorities before entering the Corbett National Park.
How to reach
By Air The nearest airport is Phoolbagh, Pantnagar at a distance of 50 km. Delhi, at 300 km, is the nearest international airport.
Nubra Valley
Jammu and Kashmir Nubra Valley derives its name from the Nubra River which flows through it. Situated close to the Siachen Glacier, the valley is also called the Valley of Flowers because of the variety of flowers present here. The valley has many attractive gardens full of colourful flowers and fruits. The place proves to be a religious centre because of the many monasteries and temples. The cold desert between Diskit and Hundur is another major attraction for tourists who throng the place to watch the sand dunes and experience joyrides on the Bactrian camels. Native to the steppes of central Asia, the Bactrian camel has two humps, in contrast to the single-humped camels found in Rajasthan and other parts of India.
68 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
By Rail The nearest railway station is Ramnagar. It is connected to Delhi and Lucknow. Ramnagar is 60 km from Nainital via Kaladhungi.
By Road Convenient is to drive down. It takes six hours from Delhi to reach Corbett. There are regular buses too from Delhi and Lucknow to Ramnagar.
Tips 1. Winter is quite harsh and Nubra Valley remains snowbound for better part of the year. It can be visited only during summer time. 2. There are shops selling Kashmiri and Tibetan artifacts. It is a great place to buy Kashmiri carpets, Pashmina shawls and socks. Apricots and apples are also worth buying here. How to reach
Nubra Valley is around 120 km from Leh. There is only one pass that vehicles can travel through and it takes around five hours due to the difficult terrain and steep passes. Only certain vehicles can pass through this road. SUVs and four-wheel vehicles are the best options but it requires experienced
drivers to be behind the wheels. There are many streams that flow through the Khardung La Pass. This stretch is in extremely bad condition. The best option is to travel to Leh, 115 km from Nubra Valley, and hire a taxi. Leh is the closest airport and the railway station.
Kadmat Island Lakshadweep
The eight km-long island is surrounded by lagoons which provide an ideal centre for water sports. The sandy beach, coral reef and astounding variety of flora and fauna make it a paradise for nature trails. One can even indulge in various water sports like kayaking, yachting, boating and skiing. Tips 1. October to April is the ideal time to visit. 2. All visitors to the Lakshadweep Islands require an entry permit. 3. Do not break plants or coral for collecting a piece as ‘souvenir’. Even the lightest touch can damage sensitive coral polyps. 4. Resist the temptation to feed fish, seabirds and marine mammals; it changes their natural behaviour and diet. 5. Dumping trash at sea is illegal.
How to reach

Apart from its innumerable sightseeing options and plantations, Ponmudi is also famous for its range of Ayurvedic treatments

The hill station which gives a sneak peek of the ocean is a half day’s drive from Kovalam. The gaping climb encounters you with loaded clove, rubber and cashew plantations. You will also stumble upon dense bamboo and teak forests situated across the mesmerising rivers and the tea plantations which adorn the misty mountain peaks. Plenty of birds, both native and migratory, have made hills of Ponmudi their home. The Ponmudi Hills are also a natural habitat for Nilgiri Tahr. Though they number around a couple of hundreds, it still forms an important habitat for the endangered species.
Tips 1. For those who prefer casual strolls instead of trekking, Ponmudi would leave them impressed. 2. A walk through the tea gardens is a feast for the senses.

ARIES
(March 21-April 19) If an Aries can get power from dressing they will dress very carefully to gain that advantage and a good example of this is Bette Davis. Most often an Aries will attempt to stay thin. For fashionconscious Aries the most popular item is the shirt in any form and style; like ribbed turtlenecks, notch-collared tunic blouses, stretchy halters, one-shoulder tops and suede/wool cardigans, all with soft necklines. Aries also wear super chic athletic clothes, drape skirts and tailored suits. This year you will be unstoppable. You would love to be around people but at the same time have control over everything. Appearances are important for you. You will expect the best and crave for change.
CANCER
(June 21-July 22) Cancerians dress up as per their mood. The best fabrics for Cancerians are fluid, shiny, sheer and mesh-like knits, jersey, flannel, velour, terry cloth and suede. Try not to wear too much leather. Combine hard and soft textures and layers. In a melancholy mood, they may dress up in absolute colours like black or white and then go for bright colours when in a lighter mood. You like to keep your favourite clothes for years and often wear them until they are totally worn out. But there will be more of fashion in 2014 and if you begin to look better (so much better) don’t be surprised. Classic colours like reds would work for you.
72 dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014
TAURUS
GEMINI
(April 20-May 20) Taureans buy the most expensive designer clothes but still hang on to their old ones. Leather clothes are an absolute necessity in your wardrobe this year. Try leather pants with oversized tops and flats. This is a lucrative year for you, with increasing success from March and a stand-out moment in April. Taureans generally have a muscular build. Men appreciate the subtleties of formal wear. They certainly look handsome in singlebreasted suit. Have faith in yourself. It’s time to experiment! Try new bright make-up. Put emphasis on the lips and you will be the centre of attention. Pick a glamorous bag like a Minaudière. Traditional dresses with earthy prints look best on you.
(May 21-June 20) You like being free to move around, thrive on change; and are eager to try anything at least once. Colours make you happy and combining a lot of them makes you happier. There will be new arrangement in March in terms of house, money, apartment, business, charity or valuable items. Your fashion style is youthful and versatile. You are not the one to dress in one style all the time, especially because you don’t like dress codes. You adapt well to changing trends and can wear anything that fashion throws your way. Avoid dark lip colours and high-contrast combinations. Keep makeup to a minimum. Geminis love to wear a lot of clothes if they all work with a specific ‘look’ they are going for.
LEO
VIRGO
(July 23-August 22): A new hairstyle, fashionable wardrobe or cosmetic procedure could greatly enhance your natural star power. Silk suits you best. For women, cargo pants or capris with tight tops would work well. Hand-painted fabrics with bold and vibrant colours for formal wear would make them stand out from the crowd. For men, a silk shirt and tie with singlebreasted suit reflect elegance. You’re a trendsetter when it comes to spicing up a classic look. You also carry business suits well. For the rest of your time you prefer flowing, elegant garments and love to get them tailored. If and when you want you will dress up meticulously but at other times exasperatedly sloppily.
(August 23-September 22): The best fabrics for Virgo are natural ones like cotton, silk, linen, wool, leather and suede. Virgo men and women usually choose the most practical clothes which suit all occasions and fashionable statements. Your clothes are not flashy since you are very picky about the clothes you wear. You prefer comfort and quality. Your ruler is the Moon. Go for pearl, amber and moonstone. Your metal is silver. You will be attending many parties and get-togethers in the most fashionable way. Virgos live in style and wear clothes that are well-cut, elegant and demand attention. Go ahead and splurge on your appearance. This would also be a great period for a dramatic makeover.
CAPRICORN
(December 22-January 19) Your know what works best on your body and that trait allows you to feel comfortable and confident. Don’t try to become something you are not. If you would want people to look at you, try out some new hats. Fedoras, bowler and floppy hats would give your style a special touch. All eyes would be on you! For you, fashion style is anything that makes you happy. You are not a cheap buyer as you love fine quality goods. Don’t bulk up your silhouette with heavy fabrics. You routinely buy beautiful clothes that look good on you. Capricorn women should steer clear of bright, breezy colours and eccentric designs. You love black leather. Also, glossy fabrics look great on you. But make sure you avoid synthetic fabrics.
SCORPIO
SAGITTARIUS
AQUARIUS
PISCES
(October 23-November 21) 2014 may be a year of profound and exciting transformations for you. Take this opportunity to go after a high-profile job that involves an element of glamour. You like to keep yourself updated on the fashion trends. However, you only pick those that you really Like. You also love retro styles. You treat your clothes as tools of seduction; in a way you are a unique trendsetter. An advice as far as your style goes: avoid bulky garments, do not dress in all black (the gothic look), avoid extremely proportionate clothes, wear slim and fitted pants, skirts and dresses that fit well. Your day-to-day wear can go from a casual to something flowing and romantic, to a very professional and sleek look.
(January 20-February 18) Aquarians are intellectual, logical, sociable, kindhearted, fair, perverse and emotional. For you, your own sense of style is important. That is why your sporty clothes scream: long time no see. So just put them on and do some exercise. Aquarians mix and match everything and break all fashion rules. They like to be different and don’t mind being called quirky or unusual. The best fabrics for you are finely-woven satin, sheers, leather, vinyl and tropical and glamorous prints. You prefer to wear solid blocks of colour. You are on your way to find your own style. Keep going and don’t look at others! Show your personality! Cool colours suit you better. Makeup advice: avoid wearing a lot of foundation.
(November 22-December 21) Fashion is a social phenomenon and Sagittarians conform to this. Jupiter, the manager of this sign, imposes certain obligations in individual style of its subordinates. For many Sagittarian women, to be fashionable simultaneously means to be accepted in a society and to showcase their success and prosperity. For others, it is time to grow up! Forget your comfy sneakers. Try to walk in heels. While you rarely bother to match your clothing items, you should try to control that characteristic when getting dressed. Your colourful clothing makes many smile as you unassumingly stick to your own way. Still, people expect you to be trendy. Sagittarians love watches. And ethnic jewellery suits their sense of style well as they don’t wear much jewellery.
(February 19-March 20) Your body is in perfect shape. So continue eating healthy food and playing some sport. You should drink more water than you do to make your skin look young and fresh. You already know how to wear your clothes in style, stand out and make a fashion statement. Buy a jumper with a bold print, perhaps one with a motorbike on it. Massive pieces of jewellery with green or blue stones will bring you luck. Your ruler is Neptune; your gemstones are pearl, amethyst, beryl and aquamarine. Odd mixes of colour suit your sense of style. However, stick to fluid shapes. Accessories add to your style! Treat yourself by buying a wonderful necklace. You will get a really special piece of jewellery this year. dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014

Frog Music
The Temporary Gentleman
The Independent once described A L Kennedy as ‘one of nature’s Eeyores’: ‘She knows grimness the way some novelists know music or food.’ So the Scottish writer’s sixth collection of short stories – billed as ‘a dozen ways of looking at love, or the lack of love’ should likely be avoided by the overly sentimental. But it promises to be marked by the dark humour that pervades her work. Her website gives you an idea of the same.
Best known for the 2010 bestseller, Room, Donoghue’s latest novel sees her returning to historical fiction (four of her eight novels are historical). Frog Music one is based on a still-unsolved murder in 1870s’ San Francisco. After her friend is killed by a gunshot through a boardinghouse window, Blanche – a burlesque dancer, prostitute and the only witness to the crime – is forced to seek justice on her own.
This is the story of Jack McNulty, an Irishman who served in the British army in the Second World, and has washed up in Accra, Ghana, in 1957, determined to write down the story of his life. He is an ordinary man who has seen extraordinary things – as a traveller, soldier, engineer, UN observer and ill-starred lover. Once again Barry, a repeat contender for the Man Booker Prize, deftly twines his own family history with the history.
The Heaven of Animals
Every Day is for the Thief
To Rise Again at a Decent Hour
Early reviews have compared Poissant’s stories to the work of Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver. In one story from this debut collection, a man throws his teenage son out of a window when he learns the boy is gay, seeking reconciliation only after helping free an alligator from a golf club pond. In another, two parents confront the unusual complications of having a newborn baby that literally glows.
Teju Cole’s debut novel, Open City, was the winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award. He returns now with a novel about Nigeria that was taken from his blog. It is the story of a man who returns home to Nigeria from New York City for a visit, and sees different facets of life all around him. Photographs by Cole are interwoven into the novel, which has been called a mix of fiction, memory and travel writing.
To read a Joshua Ferris novel is to stare at the gaping emptiness just below the surface of modern life and, quite often, laugh. In this one, dentist Paul O’Rourke discovers that someone is impersonating him online, with a website, a Facebook page and a Twitter account, all created in his name. As he looks into the mystery, he begins to fear that his digital doppelganger may be better than the real thing.

Christmas Cheer A spectacular 20 feet-tall Christmas tree, bright twinkling lights and tuneful rendering of Christmas carols by a live choir greeted shoppers at the third edition of Christmas Cheer at DLF Promenade. Held from December 6 to January 2, this edition turned out to be a brighter and bigger fest as the mall organised a series of interesting events. The Christmas market at the hub housed a variety of stuff for shoppers to buy as gifts for their close ones. The Christmas vignettes, such as reindeer pulling a sack of gifts, a huge Santa standing with gift boxes at the entrance of the mall, danglers hung in the atrium in the shape of huge gift boxes created a Christmas wonderland.
DLF Promenade made sure that its patrons got to enjoy Christmas to the hilt and went all out to arrange artificial snowfall in the mall premises. Santa Claus sitting on a king-size chair welcomed all children and brought an instant smile to their faces. To add to the fun, Choko la organised a chocolate-making session for kids at Kiddyland, where a large snowman tree became the highlight for the little ones. Soft toys and chocolates were also distributed to around 150 kids on December 25. The enjoyment and festivity in the air were surely multiplied when the mall patrons were treated to a sumptious cake from Choko la. The celebration, however, did not stop there. The live band performances definitely added to the shoppers' delight. As a very special Christmas gift for its visitors, DLF Promenade gave them a chance to live their dreams. One of the lucky winners got a chance to take home a Harley Davidson bike, while another lucky winner won a family trip for four to London. dlfpromenade.com/ MAR-MAY 2014

5th Anniversary DLF Promenade turned five this February. One of the most significant factors that has made DLF Promenade stand out as one of India’s premium malls is its brands. The award ceremony on February 7 was attended by all its retail partners, wherein the winners under various categories, including best customer service, best visual merchandising, best quality food and others were announced. The glittering evening was also marked by live performance, a cake-cutting ceremony and lite-bites from Café DT. This was followed by a get together at Café Delhi Heights. On February 9, 1,826 cakelings were distributed to the people visiting the mall while the first 1,000 kids got balloons. Shoppers were also given surprise gifts throughout the month and for this, all they had to do was express their feelings for their loved ones and also for the mall. A number of other activities were also planned inside the mall including performances by music bands Breath and World of Talent.
Double Celebration
As DLF Promenade celebrated its fifth anniversary, shopping in the mall became five times more exciting. Making the month of love more enjoyable, customers spending `5,000 and `10,000 got a chance to take home delectable handmade chocolate shortbread cookies and stylish glass jar with sparkling fairy lights respectively. Five lucky winners, registering for the `5,000 category, won stylish hampers from Forest Essentials, Aroma Thai, Colorbar, Keya Kainoosh and Looks Unisex Salon. Five lucky shoppers in the `10,000 category won weekend getaways for their families. Winners could choose from an assortment of five resorts from Amritara Hospitality. The mall too wore a celebratory look rejoicing both Valentine's Day and its fifth anniversary.

upcoming events
women's day All ladies were treated like princesses and queens at DLF Promenade to celebrate Women’s Day. The mall organised a number of activities and promotions from March 1 to 8. All the women shoppers registering at the concierge got a chance to attend the special screening of Gulab Gang, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, at DT Cinemas. That was not all. They also got a chance to get a special facial at Lancome and Eat Food Lounge card. Apart from the other activities held inside the mall, all women drivers who visited DLF promenade on March 8 got free parking and waterless car wash service. The women shoppers were indeed happy to have celebrated their day and womanhood at DLF Promenade in grand style.
Food Festival
DLF Promenade's out-of-the-box and category-led marketing initiatives will see another milestone added in the list with the first-ever Food Festival. The F&B Brands from both DLF Emporio and DLF Promenade will come together to make it an enriching experience. The 10-day event, scheduled to be held from March 20 to 30, will take place at the Hub. The one-of-a-kind openair lifestyle space comprising cafÊs, dancing fountain on the likes of Bellagio and the city’s largest LED screen, the Hub will surely be bustling with energy all these days. If you think the festival will be limited to food alone then there is a surprise for you. The festival will also be marked by performances from various musical bands and groups. So do remember to block your dates for this fest.
shopper's delight
The more you shop, less you pay might sound like fiction but DLF Promenade is all set to turn that into reality for its shoppers. In the month of April, mall patrons will get a wonderful chance to be rewarded for their shopping. The top three spenders every week will win `1 lakh, `75,000 and `50,000 respectively or their entire shopping amount, whichever is less. You surely don't need a bigger reason to go shopping now.
