Winter wows

Don’t let the chill cramp your style – these makeup trends and tricks are sure to make you the talk of the town words A s h a

It’s

time to let go and indulge in an extra wine glass or two as you let your hair down. But before you RSVP to any of the festive celebrations round the corner, get your gear together with the season’s absolute makeup must-haves. Here’s a complete beauty lesson on the trends to watch out for and the tips and tricks to get the looks right.

beauty bible

Ace the base With a flawless complexion, makeup is enhanced even more. Winter is actually the perfect time to make the most of your foundation. It hides the redness that cold weather often induces on the skin and it also stays put beautifully since the sweltering heat is not an issue. But all’s not well as the skin needs extra nourishment in this weather. Choose a foundation that loves your skin and blends well, like Lancome’s Teint Visionnaire Skin Correcting Makeup Duo that comes with a concealer.

How-to: Prep your skin well with a cleanser and moisturiser. Conceal problem spots like blemishes and dark circles with the help of a concealer. Take a coin-sized amount of foundation and lightly pat it with your fingertips till it blends seamlessly. If you think you’ve applied too much, roll a cotton ball over your face in a smooth motion to get rid of the excess.

Inglot AMC Eye Shadow, `650 Inglot AMC Face Blush, `1,050

Sparkly touches

Let’s face it, the party season isn’t complete without some shine and dazzle. Go all out with gunmetal, copper, dark silver and bold bronze. Glitter and metallic finishes work best on the eyes. Metallic eye shadows and glitter eye liners work well – but not as a combo deal. Stick to one. Another great way to incorporate this trend is to wear glitter or metallic hues on your talons. And if you are planning on showing some skin, get a hold of shimmering body lotions and dry oils to shine into the night.

L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Concealer, `875 (Available at New U) M.A.C Foundation Brush, price on request

Lancome Teint Visionnaire Skin Perfecting Makeup Duo, `3,500

How-to: For the eyes, make sure to create a good base with foundation so that the shadow stays put. A metallic smoky eye is your best bet as it suits all complexions and is perfect to create that drama and mystery for a night out. Another idea is to wear black extended eye liner and sweep a thinner line of glitter liner across the top lid. dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

Blue-eyed beauty

Flushed cheeks

The rage over cobalt blue continues, spilling over to the festive season. And why not? The hue works wonders on all Indian skin tones – from fair to dusky. Midnight blue also suit Indian complexions, provided there is a little hint of shine in the formula for it to catch the light.

Steer clear of the bronzer this season as it is best suited for sunny summers. Instead, opt for warm pinks, old rose and coral hues. Remember to invest in a good blush brush as well as a contouring brush to create those sculpted supermodel cheek bones. You may also want to get your hands on M.A.C’s Strobe Cream for that dewy finishing touch.

How-to: Wear it as a thick eye liner with lots of mascara to amplify your lashes. To really bring out the blue, line the rims of your eyes with a white eye pencil. You can also set your eye lids awash with the hue using an eye shadow. Accentuate the effect by dabbing just a little bit of silver or champagne eye shadow on the inner corners and sweeping mascara on your lashes.

Chambor Dazzle Eye Pencil, `545 (Available at New U)

Lancome Artliner 24H in Sapphire, price on request

Inglot Lipstick in No. 127, `750

How-to: First up, contour the hollows of your cheeks just under the cheekbone with an absolutely matte blush or loose powder that is one shade darker than your complexion. Next, on the apples of your cheeks, sweep your blush in a 45 degree angle. Coral shades look best on dusky skin while warm pinks flatter fair and wheatish complexions. Finally, once the blush has settled, use a pea-sized amount of M.A.C’s Strobe Cream and dab it just between the eye sockets and the apples to lift your cheek bones. Lancome Cheek & Contour Brush, `2,750

Pout luck

The top lip trends this party season are bright matte lips and deliciously dark puckers. There’s never been a better time to don fuchsia, coral and shades of red in a matte avatar. If you want to go dark then berries, wines, plums and burgundies are an excellent choice.

How-to: To rock bright matte lips, keep the rest of your look toned down with very little blush. Keep the eyes lined around the rims and use lengthening mascara. For pulling off the dark lips look, choose a shade that suits you in a creamy or glossy finish. Add vintage drama to the look by lining only the top lid with liquid eye liner. Finally, wear volumising mascara to finish the look. L'Oreal Volume Million Lashes Mascara, `575 (Available at New U)

Welcome

winter That warmth of wool, that high of boots and that touch of delicate scarves, winter is indeed a love affair with fashion. Make the most of these months as we tell you how to up the mercury level with your style quotient. words g a r i m a v e r m a

You

always want what you are wearing to say something about you, about who you are. And, no season gives you the opportunity to make that statement as well as winter does. When you wear that flirtatious red coat or pick that mind-your-own-business leather jacket, you take no more than a moment to reflect your mood and style. Nothing highlights more your longing to rekindle the romance with past or your desire to take a walk down the memory lane than that plaid number you chose to wear. If that animal print adds a touch of wild to your look, floral prints make you look the dainty girl once again. As does cashmere with its softness and delicateness. Winter is indeed a canvas like no other to let your style paint it as you like it. And, as German fashion legend Karl Otto Lagerfeld said, “The woman is the most perfect doll that I have dressed with delight and admiration. So, get up, dress up and be that perfect doll that brings cheer to the atmosphere and makes hearts skip a beat. dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

headgear Get in to the

Match your trendy winter wear with hats and caps that add to the colour on your cheeks words g a r i m a v e r m a

haute spot

Your

hats are what would set you apart in a room full of people or a street crowded with pedestrians. They are also the very first thing that would not only get you noticed but also etch you in others’ memory long after you have left the place. So, choose wisely what sits atop your head, compliments your face structure and defines your features.

OBLONG or RECTANGULAR FACE: Celebrity: Sarah Jessica Parker/Kate Beckinsale An oblong or rectangular face could be angular but not always as the cheekbones are not any or much wider than the forehead and jawline. This face shape has characteristics similar to a square one, except that these are longer. The first target should be to avoid adding any more length, hence, keep away from tall hats and narrow brims. Flared and wide brims will seem to have added width to the face. Push the hat down on your forehead to make it look smaller.

Style: Wide brim Fedora/Cloche/Floppy/Newsboy

SMALL FACE: Celebrity: Selena Gomez/ Eva Longoria Just go by logic. The idea that goes for selecting your clothes works for the hats too. Going by the principle that petite figures should avoid big dresses and larger women should be more dramatic, small faces also need small hats. So, think about ‘small’ headgear that sits tight on your face and doesn’t overpower the personality. Avoid large brims or large crowns as they would swallow your face, just like a big dress does a small figure.

SQUARE FACE:

ROUND FACE:

Celebrity: Sandra Bullock/ Angelina Jolie

Celebrity: Cameron Diaz/Drew Barrymore

This is one of the most common face shapes, along with round. A square face does not narrow much from cheekbones to forehead and vice versa. It may also look angular as the jawline might appear sharply-angled at the corners.

A round face’s widest point is across the cheekbones, narrowing a bit at the forehead and jawline. Since round faces often look full and short, go for tall and shallow hats to add some length. A wide brim would help the face look slimmer. Slant your hat or look for asymmetrical angles to distract from facial curves. Avoid rounded crowns as it will only add more roundness to your face.

The aim should be to soften those angles and minimise that strong jaw. A large brim, a rounded crown or curvy lines not only soften the features but also add length. A hat that sits high on forehead, like a signature Che Guevara beret, is just an example.

BANGS Celebrity: Zoey Deschanel If you have bangs, you just have two options while choosing your headgear – either pick one that shows them off in style or just pin them up and tuck under the hat to hide them. We’ll suggest picking up a beret instead. Place it at the back of your head or just pull it to one side.

4 steps to face shape 1. Start by measuring across the top of your cheekbones. Place the end of measuring tape just past the outer corner of your eye. Lay the tape in a straight line across the bridge

of your nose to just past the outer corner of your other eye. 2. Now measure your jaw line across the widest part of your jaw. Multiply the number by two.

26 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

3. Measure the length of your face. Start at the middle of your hairline. Run the tape down your face, over your nose, to the tip of chin. 4. Place the start point of

the tape on one side of your forehead’s widest point (halfway between eyebrows and hairline). Run the tape to the same point on the opposite side of your head.

haute spot Style: Fedora

SHARP ANGLES (DIAMOND/TRIANGLE): Celebrity: Victoria Beckham/Rihanna

HEART-SHAPED FACE:

Be it wide, prominent cheekbones and narrow jawline and forehead giving the face a diamond-shaped appearance or a narrow forehead with a wide jawline giving a triangular shape, faces with sharp angles need to be accentuated with sweeping lines and asymmetrical shapes.

Celebrity: Reese Witherspoon/ Jennifer Love Hewitt

Hats with prominent trimming or curves would show off your cheekbones. Try angling or tilting the way the hat sits on your forehead to play to your angles.

OVAL FACE: Celebrity: Natalie Portman/ Jessica Alba Style: Suit your mood Considered the ideal shape for styling, this face is widest at the cheekbones, but not much, and narrows a bit at forehead and jawline. Just like with sunglasses, an oval face can carry off any kind of hat. All that you need is: pick anything and just play with the tilt to up the style quotient.

Sometimes also called the inverted triangle, heart-shaped faces are widest at the forehead, narrowing towards the jawline and chin. While this pretty face shape would look good in any type of hat, one should avoid too small brims as they would make the forehead look bigger. And, with the chin being the narrowest point of the face, stay away from too wide brims as well as they only make it appear narrower. Go for soft curves or designs that can be angled one way or another.

Style: Cloche/Beanie Skull Beanie

Knit Cloche

Slouch Beanie Peak Beanie

Conclusion Round - Your face is as wide as it is long. This may vary a little but generally the measurement is close. Oblong - Longer than it is wide, with cheekbones,

forehead and jawline measurements all within an inch or so of each other. Heart - Narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones/and or forehead.

Square - Your face is about as wide as it is long. Oval - Longer than it is wide. Forehead slightly wider than jawline and a gently rounded chin.

Sharp angles: Diamond Widest at cheekbones, narrow forehead and jawline of approx equal widths. Triangle - Widest at jawline, narrow cheekbones and narrower forehead.

Boot

up

Winter is sure incomplete without flaunting that sexy pair of shoes words g a r i m a v e r m a

Get

hold of that trendy, aweinspiring and envious pair of shoes to add more glam to your winter. But do not forget to take care of them to keep them looking as good as they did when you fell in love with them at first sight What comes naturally to defence personnel is nothing less than an exercise most ignored by others. We might be head over heels (literally) with those stunning pair of boots but hardly do anything on a daily basis to express that emotion in action. Our shoes go through a lot. More so in winter. The bone-chilling weather, a sudden rain, ever-existent moisture in the season or that visit to snowy hill station are more than enough reasons to make shoes rebel and choose one fine day to show their ugly side to us. Just a touch of care can undoubtedly save us from that dreaded day when we pull out a jaw-dropping dress from our closet but find the shoes that matched it perfectly suddenly beyond wearable state. Here are some formulae that when regularly followed would not only help the footwear look stunning whole through the season but also keep them in good shape for more to come.

28 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

PROTECT Got your hands on those stylish high-heels to go with your trench coat or jackets and can’t wait to show them to the whole world? Still, wait! Always spray new shoes with a waterproofing product to increase their water resistance before you start using them. A regular usage enhances the footwear’s original protective qualities. For leather, you can even try the highlyrecommended saddle soap. Made of lanolin, neatsfoot oil and glycerol, it acts as protective, waterproofing and softening agent. Just wipe the boot with a damp cloth, create lather with the soap using water and a cleaning cloth. Apply this lather to the boot, allow to dry a bit and wipe off. (Caution: It can darken some leather so test spot first.)

Shoe trees might look like ugly weapons of shoe care but give fabulous results. They allow your recently-worn shoes to contract and dry out to their ideal shape. Varnished trees look posh, but they don’t properly draw moisture (or sweat) out of the leather. Go for unfinished cedar models with a split toe and a fully shaped heel. The vital time for using them is the hour or two after you have removed the shoes from your feet. After that, the shoes will have returned to their natural architecture and the trees can be removed. To raise the nap of flattened suede, scrub with a clean toothbrush or terry cloth towel or steam gently over the spout of a steaming kettle and brush the nap. dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

All types of shoes should be kept clean. If your shoes are leather, keep them well polished. For synthetic ones, a regular wipe down with warm water helps remove dirt. Scuffs: Never ever give in to the temptation of scrubbing those ugly scuff marks on your leather shoes. Dip a soft cloth in water, then baking soda and rub the spots gently. Then wipe clean with a damp cloth and buff dry. For rubber, follow the same process, just substitute baking soda with your kitchen scouring powder. This stronger treatment works on wooden or composite heels too. The wet cleaning that works for leather or rubber doesn’t for suede as it needs to stay dry to keep its texture. So, for suede, rub off all dirt with a kneadable eraser or lightly sand away with an emery paper. Oil stains can be removed from suede boots by rubbing as soon as possible with either cornmeal or talcum powder. Gently brush off with a towel after leaving for a few hours to soak up the grime. Salt stains: If you have been to a place where it snows and salt is used on the streets to keep them clear of snow, your boots are going to pick up the salt. It mars the look, weakens the fabric and rusts metallic parts. Still wet salt lines can be quickly fixed by wiping over the leather boot with a damp, warm cloth and leave to dry. Dried-on salt lines can be removed with commercial products or you can combine equal parts of vinegar and water to make a liquid solution. Dip a cleaning rag into the solution and wipe around the salt line. To finish, use a clean damp cloth to wipe off the solution and any remaining salt line. Wipe with a dry towel, then leave to dry away from direct heat, which can make leather brittle. When dry, buff. For suede, use eraser or emery paper.

At winter’s end, never store boots without cleaning them first and ensuring that they are completely dry. Otherwise, you risk finding moldy, cracked and possibly ruined boots next winter. Stains left too long may set permanently and weaken the boot. And, mold that grows on one boot can cross-contaminate other shoes, boots and items of clothing stored in the same vicinity. Do not store boots in plastic bags. Suede and leather need to breathe and plastic bags restrict this ability, drying out the boot and trapping mold. Better choices include pillowcases, fabric shoe bags and cloth bags. Store boots away from direct light or heat sources. Direct light can fade the boots, while direct heat can cause them to dry out and crack. dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

Mane up! Don’t just go for the hairstyle that’s in vogue. Find out what works best for your hair type to make the most of your tresses words A s h a

How

many times have you admired a friend’s new hair cut only to be disappointed to see it on your own hair? There are many factors that determine whether a hairdo will suit us or not. Our face shape, the length and texture of our hair – all play an important role in finding our perfect match. The right hair cut can make your face look slimmer, younger, reduce your morning grooming time and even make your tresses more manageable. Are you ready to rock your mane?

beauty bible

Straight hair Make the cut: True, straight hair does have a tendency to reflect light and shine more than other hair types but it is also prone to falling flat – especially if you have straight hair with a fine texture. Volume issues need to be addressed by your hairstylist while figuring out a hair cut for you. Do not opt for razor cuts – it is better to opt for blunt styles or those that cut straight across. Adding a few long layers is an option—it softens the lines and creates movement. Though too many can thin out the bottom and make the hair appear

stringy. Go to a hair salon that indulges in dry cutting with scissors so that you can add some structure to your hair. Bobs are another great option for those with medium or shoulder-length hair. Bangs are advised on long hair, but not if the hair is too fine as they won’t hold their shape.

Style it right: Prefer styles with soft waves and back combing at the crown to add volume, density and movement to your hair. Make a volumising hairspray your best friend during the party season.

Wavy hair Make the cut: Those with wavy hair have the best of both worlds and it is interesting to create new looks. You would want to stick to cuts that incorporate evenly-spaced layers. If your length is long, a side swept bang or flick will flatter you. If your hair is medium in length, ask your hair stylist for layers that frame your face. Avoid blunt or bob styles with short and shoulder-length wavy hair. With short or shoulder length, it is best to avoid layers as the structure of the hair may end up looking triangular as it reaches the neck and shoulders. Style it right: Use a leave-in conditioner to keep your mane looking soft. Side ponytails, messy braids and loose buns show off your waves in the best way possible. Side parting usually works well with wavy hair irrespective of length. These styles are dressy enough for night outs. You can add oomph by adding a sparkly hair accessory here and there. beauty bible

Curly hair Make the cut: The biggest concern here is to avoid the hay-like appearance. Your hair cut should enhance the softness of your strands. For curly hair, it is best to work on freshly-washed and conditioned tresses. If you want to keep your length, ask your hairstylist to slice out hair a little from the bottom to make them more manageable. This way they look softer and you can easily style ponytails with the tamed volume. Medium-length curly hair needs slicing at different lengths to keep them looking fluid. If you want your curly tresses short and sweet, go for pixie cuts or styles

that will crop the hair at chin length. Finally, no matter what anyone tells you – never go for layered styles with curly hair as they will only add to your volume woes.

Style it right: This is a great hair type for elaborate and structured hairdos as the texture of the hair allows for maximum manipulation and they stay put! French twists, pulled back buns and ponytails will make you a head turner at parties. A must-have styling product for you is a glossing serum or spray to tackle dullness issues.

Fabindia Aloe Vera Protein Conditioner, `250 Pantene Daily Moisture Repair Conditioner and shampoo `149 (Available at New U)

Party hair tips For those impromptu after-work parties, let your hair down and ruffle them up for an instant volume boost. You can also fake volume by switching your parting the other way.

Frizzy fly-aways can ruin the look of any hairdo. Keep every strand in place by smoothing it over with a tissue paper doused in hairspray.

44 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

During the party season, don’t forget to nourish your locks with a deep conditioning treatment or hair mask to repair damage from styling products, straighteners and curling irons.

For thinning hair at the crown, invest in some statement head bands that are broad and cover up the sparse hair.

For an ultra glam ponytail, tie your hair into a low or side ponytail and later, use a hair mousse and scrunch your hair together. You’ll be a diva in no time.

beauty bible

All the

right moves With suitable products and tricks up your sleeve, no beauty woe will make you frown this season words A s h a

When

you’re out painting the town red, it is almost impossible to eat healthy and maintain a good skin-care routine. High calorie foods, fried fare, alcohol and oodles of desserts not only hamper your waistline – they also spell disaster for the skin. Late nights also add to your skin’s troubles. And we all end up committing the ultimate skin sin every now and then – sleeping in makeup. No wonder then that you get those nasty zits just the day before that big bash you had been looking forward to. Here’s your beauty bible for surviving this season.

Quench your thirst The biggest reason for blemishes, pimples and uneven textured skin during the soiree season is lack of hydration. Make sure you get your daily dose of H2O. The best way to ensure your quota is to drink a litre of water the moment you get up – this is great for detoxifying and combating the effects of alcohol on the skin.

Oh-so-glowy! We’ll let you in on the ultimate radiant skin secret – mix equal parts moisturiser, foundation and illuminator to get a dewy finish on your skin. This will work even on tired and dehydrated skin.

Get fresh hair With no time to shampoo and no dry shampoo in sight either, you can still give your tresses a new lease of life. Just pat a little bit of talcum powder or baking soda (Yes!) on your scalp and ruffle your hair at the roots. You will have refreshed hair in no time.

Pimple perils So, you were adventurous and popped a pimple only to realise you’ve made things worse? Curb the swelling and redness by applying ice with some pressure for a few minutes. You must use an antiseptic ointment to prevent infection. Once the skin has absorbed the ointment, dab on a little yellow-toned concealer before you apply the rest of your makeup.

Two birds with one stone The perks of drinking green tea are endless – it aids digestion, helps with weight loss, protects from various diseases and there is even a use for the used tea bags. Once you’ve sipped your cuppa, place the used tea bags in

the refrigerator for 10 minutes and put them on your eyes. You will de-puff your peepers instantly.

Wake up your skin Want to look decent after you’ve been partying all night? With no beauty sleep on your side, it is still possible to create the illusion of well-rested skin. All you need is a bag of frozen peas. Yes, seriously! Use the bag as a cold compress on your cleansed face in the morning for just five minutes. Follow it up with your regular moisturiser and you’ll be ready for that board meeting in no time!

Lipstick on your teeth?

Oily no more

What’s worse than ingesting your lipstick? The crimson and pink hues sitting on your teeth as you smile and chat away! To ensure you don’t embarrass yourself, fold a tissue and blot your lipstick by placing it between your lips before you head out. This is an indispensable move if you’re wearing a bright lipper.

Nothing ruins those party pictures more than greasy blobs on your skin. Keep a pack of blotting paper handy in your clutch to quickly absorb excess oil from your skin. They’re a life saver!

Travel-proof skin If you’re a jetsetter and frequent flying makes you look less than lovely at arrivals, apply a clear hydrating mask before boarding. Since the mask is clear, it won’t be visible and it will keep your skin well-nourished even during long flights. Remove it with a wet wipe as you leave the aircraft to look fresh and dazzling.

Clock’s ticking Life’s just too short to wait for nail polish to dry – especially when you have a party to go to. Cut the process short by applying the usual two coats of nail enamel. Wait for a few minutes. Dip your finger tips in ice cold water for a few minutes and you will have dry and hardset nail polish.

Mascara massacre It’s not unusual to ruin mascara and smear it in odd places like the top lid and cheek while applying it. Instead of panicking and wiping it off right then, wait for it to dry naturally. Next, simply use a cotton swab or ear bud to flick it off your skin. You won’t have to redo your makeup in that spot.

Too much blush? Let’s face it – it’s not very easy to get the same amount of blush on both your cheeks. Sometimes you overdo it and end up with either too much on both or one cheek. If you’ve gone overboard with powder blush, dust on some loose powder to even it out. Too much cream blush can be fixed by using a very small amount of foundation with a makeup sponge or foundation brush.

Cambodia Once the land of temples and tragedy, Cambodia is now a delight for luxury seekers words d e va n shi mo d y

BKK!

No, it’s not Bangkok, it’s Phnom Penh’s expatswarmed posh area. About BBK, Song Saa’s director of sales and marketing, Nick Chandler, avers, “I’ve lived in Melbourne and San Francisco. There’s an electricity in the air here now that surpasses both.” A swank new restaurant, café, bar or spa opens every day. The capital has hastened. So does my heart when I realise a smoothie shot marked 6.50 is in US$. All prices are. I can’t say what the Cambodian currency is (really), but I’ll say Cambodia has transcended tragedy and temples!

Rising heights I’m wallowing in the marvel of Le Chocolat’s mocha, at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, amid Parisian intimacy as the muddy Mekong flows thickly like a chocolate river outside. PR Manager Natalie Moser points out at the

54 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

construction beyond, “In four months, they’ve stacked four storeys. Spoils our view, but demonstrates Phnom Penh’s frenetic development.” “It’ll be a luxury mall,” Natalie imparts. I grimace. It seems the time at Sofitel has stalled at La Coupole, a French colonial recreation where macarons swing in curious bird cages, vegetables sit on twowheeled contraptions and fromages affinés (ripened cheeses), flown in from France, are displayed on wooden carts.

Pretty in pink The award-winning So Spa has soFrench blushing-pink therapy suites, embroidered in Khmer curlicues, and a spa menu structured like a culinary one. Pen Sopheak effects the Kingdom’s best massages for starters and Clarins Facials for mains. Spa excesses notwithstanding, I’m next engorging Hachi’s terrific Japanese cuisine.

Ma Chérie, restraint! Mustn’t sink that private island (I’m Song Saa-bound).

On a song! Off the speedboat, to a welcome of towels chilling on flowered ice beds decorated with king coconuts spouting bamboo straws. “They grow in the village on the facing island,” a staff member beams. Amused, I ask, “You just pick them off trees?” A senior staff member asserts urgently, “They are customised for Song Saa Private Island (the straws, not the coconuts) by fishing villages the resort supports.” A look at my villa, with a pool, sitting pretty atop a hill, suggests if you would even throw a kitchen sink at co-owner Melita Hunter she’ll change it into some fascinating decorative device. Fetch her a trunk and in it she’ll classily camouflage the mini-bar; without deranging whose contents I’m already inebriated by views of lofty mist-molten rain forests

voyage

At Governor’s House, the chandelier comes stooping down four floors in a Bohemian rhapsody

reflecting beautifuly on emerald waters. No bling-blue Maldivian seas here, but sunset makes sky look spectacular in red, orange and mauve. The neighbouring Spa Sanctuary descends into the second island the resort bestrides, manager Narayana Prasad tells one. He has crafted an excursive tripartite menu, including Īla Kaaya Kalpa massage, Rain Forest and Ananda Facials. At the wall-less, over-water Vista, one of the most astounding restaurants, the new chef sprinkles supper with tales of his times at Aman Resorts, where a female couple visited with their child, who happened to be a teddy-bear! He flew First Class, was ordered meals for and was tucked into bed in his own villa ($1500 a night). My eyes circumnavigate Song Saa’s guests. They seem more sensible by far.

Mangroves time Post breakfast, which was innovative with kaffir-lime-striated mascarpone, date and passion coulis and jackfruit compote,

56 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

I’m boating to the mangroves. Resident conservationist Barnaby says they’ve civilised the fishermen, not so the fish. ‘Don’t feed the animals.’ A barracuda might take off your hand, along with the 10-carat solitaire on it. We’re kayaking through mangroves; Barnaby enlarges on how Song Saa has educated, empowered and elevated local communities, relaying future projects to sophisticate fisher-folk here. We return to the boat, across which our boatman is stretched, straw-hat on face, arms on chest. “Bong!” Barnaby roars, repeatedly. Nothing adds to slumber more than serene surroundings. You’re in bliss when you can nip into a nap at work!

Next stop: Park Hyatt Siem Reap I’d been mailing my travel travails to a certain Sholto Smith, thinking he’s some front-office minion. When I finally reach the just-launched and enviously stylish hotel, I’m swept into a perfect pink lobby-lounge – The Living Room. Here, the tallest man I have ever seen, over-shooting the Park Hyatt’s tower (he

seems endless!) stoops down stylishly, widens a Louis Vuitton card-holder and presents his card. He is the GM. He is Sholto Smith! He looks like he just stepped off a Louis Vuitton ad! The Living Room’s where the ‘Park Hyatt people’ (those beautiful creatures who shop at Cartier) fiddle around with high teas, tended fingers curled preciously around macarons like Cartier pink diamonds or excavating jade pandan crème brûlée. Lesser mortals appreciating palm sugar ice cream (5 scoops, I pledge) at the hotel’s Glass House luxury deli are generally expats. In-house guests prefer the art exhibits on terraces exhaling chic, those signature Bill Bensley swings you can dine the elegant Khmer cuisine on. In the courtyard, an arching Banyan tree makes a spectacle of itself in an earthenware. It’s the cynosure, but only till the privatepooled villas are launched, into which the people will banish themselves, emerging only to luxuriate around the new pool. And, perhaps to dine on French chef-owner Rivière’s cunning Khmer dishes at Cuisine Wat Damnak. Think 2-3 select, hand-picked ingredients intensified in vivid, lingering preparations. Extraordinaire! When the degustation announces choco-coco crumble for dessert, I decide to martyr myself in silent suffering.

From home to hotel Back in Phnom Penh, I’m recommended Governor’s House by Alain Garnier, the converter of once Cambodian Governor’s residences into the quirkiest

boutique hotels. The chandeliers there come stooping down four floors (a Bohemian rhapsody of artefacts) as Rachmaninov (Piano Concerto II) blazons from dawn. Garnier is also a scion of Belgium’s oldest, foremost antique-dealer families, a would-be chocolatier and frequenter of Belgium’s Philip II for ‘gorgeous supper and homemade breakfast yoghurt’ (whether a Michelin-starred Frenchman trained his chef remains unattested). I’ll say he has taste and adores beautiful things (not necessarily inanimate). The dumber appointments seem pricier, certainly Churchill’s desk and chair, given that his nether regions (we’ve AG’s assurances on that) are impressed there. This live-in museum-cum-opera houses the capital’s most creative rooms: suite Marilyn opens into a jacuzzi parked behind the bed!

Food paradise Last year, I said I’d return to Phnom Penh just to eat at Malis. This year I find myself eating much more. But Cambodia’s gourmet Godfather Luu Meng prevails. Cambodia once cowered beside the culinary colossus that’s Thailand. Tables are turning (despite Thai scorn of what they snigger is listless Khmer cuisine) as Meng, who wowed and wooed international gastronomes and acquired celebrity, refines and redefines Khmer cuisine. I hear the chef dashes into his kitchen, dons an apron, dashes out, suited, on-time to receive a VIP emerging from a Rolls Royce. So, when the furiously busy chef attends me around the town, its denizens remark that even the visiting New Zealand premier wasn’t thus honoured. He, I doubt, was treated to Meng’s humour, ticklish like the Kampot pepper which he has propelled to international fame. If Malis is besieged it’s because the King is dining there, if not some president or Gordon Ramsay. You can avail of fine French cuisine and premium Valrhona chocolate desserts at sister restaurant Topaz’s snazzy terrace. Phnom Penh has attained luxurious heights with just-launched Common Tiger. 32-year-old South African chef Timothy Bruyns was at North Island and Song Saa but was tired of Brangelina demanding steak-tartare at 4 am; well dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

they could. So, he opened his own restaurant. Now if he’s in the kitchen at 4am it’s only to hone his technique. “Cooking is like baring yourself on a plate,” Tim says. Yet his cuisine is adorned in delicate leafy frills and polkadotted in complex, colourful reductions, with flavoursome spreads, and sequined with Khmer ingredients. Accompanying his designer creations is the chef - no, not on the plate, but with the plate, and not naked (sorry ladies, as he has been called a ‘dishy item’).

Piggy-bank Brown At Brown, BKK’s smartest coffee house, I’m meeting founder Leang, thinking he must be a 40-year-old. He’s 20-something! Leang shocks further that his parents weren’t educated, courtesy Khmer Rouge, whose destruction his mother’s nine siblings survived miraculously. Thus, five of his cousins

(a Stanford-admitted architect, two engineers and a Cordon Bleu chef) had envisaged an education NGO. Instead, with piggy-bank savings, they made fiercely all-Khmer Brown and taught Khmers why a 30ml espresso merited US$3. In five years they’ve seven cafés where glam things glug palm sugar frappés toting designer bags with 20” heels which get higher at their justlaunched wine-bar, Fox. These craven luxuries, the Chocolate Shop’s Belgian owner Griet rues, suppress the ‘real’ Cambodia. But Griet provides Khmer-ingredient-infused chocolate, brings in Khmers (when many expats disdain locals, whose patronage they avowedly discourage) and employs Belgian-trained Khmers like manager Sothereath.

Salad becomes sexy Luxury salads became en-vogue when

dainty Sophea, an aspiring fashion designer, knew not where to eat postgym, so simply had to open Vego salad bar. Sophea dresses beautifully and Ratana dresses the menu similarly. Apart from design-your-own salads/ sandwiches/curries, Ratana, being a Thai, ensures there’s green curry Thai-style too. She reveals their noMSG policy so disturbed her cook that when she sampled Ratana’s curry she put down her spoon, declared it Ort cha ngang (not tasty) and fled in terror. Evaluating Terrazo’s rare wines and gold-medal-winning olive oils, I wonder, “Phnom Penh appreciates such refinements?” Just a stupid question that comes to my mind as a cavalcade of Cambodian royals and their expat entourage pass by. Barbecue bash

Warm up to the winter by hosting a fun party in your garden or patio. Grill steaks and corn on the cob, make pitchers of tropical, fruity drinks and beer coolers. words M a n i s h a A l m a d i M i d h a

A

great way to enjoy the winter chill is to host a fun get together with family and friends. After all isn’t this the perfect time to showcase your expertise at cooking? A pleasantly cold weather is the only motivation you need to plan a barbecue party and share not only the food but warmth too. Moreover, a unique theme to the party can make the gathering festive and memorable for all. Here’s what to do to make your winter barbecue an annual event.

Guest list and seating The best thing about a BBQ is that you can invite more people than you can for a formal sit-down dinner. A great way to provide more seating for your guests is to bring those patio chairs inside if you have space as you really don’t need a table for a BBQ party. You can also invite all those friends, neighbours and relatives whom you have not seen for some time as it’s easier to manage food for many people in a BBQ. Just be sure the adults have a seat to settle into with their plate of food. If you have an extra room, bring in your outdoor table and chairs to offer extra seating. Barbecuing is a not only a social activity but it also brings out the cook in the most unexpected of people, with men readily taking charge.

Get the equipment You can prepare the food for your party in two ways. The first is to use your outdoor BBQ grill, but remember to dress warmly and leave the grill covered while you cook to keep the heat

dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

61

sip & slurp

Shop for all your BBQ party needs including food, drinks, crockery, decoration and music at DLF Promenade inside the grill. The second is to use an indoor grill. You can spend as little or as much as you want on barbecue equipment, but there’s probably no point in rushing out and parting with a couple of thousands for your first party. Start off with a cheaper model and assess how much use you think you’ll get out of it. Generally, barbecues fall into the following categories:

62 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

• • • •

Deluxe multi burners which run on gas Firehouse or chimney style burners or fire pits Charcoal or smoker barbecue which runs on charcoal or woodchips Kettle barbecues are multi-purpose BBQs with a lid

Accessories You’ll need gas canisters (if applicable for your type of barbecue), charcoal and cooking tools, such as spatulas, tongs, basting brushes, grill brushes, branding irons and skewers. It’s a good idea to invest in a set of melamine plates, bowls and cups to save your best crockery from ending up in pieces on the patio. And don’t forget the matches!

Drinks & munchies A great barbecue includes tons of snacks to nosh on before and after the grilled food is served. Make those famous dips that your guests always look forward to. Don’t be shy to ask your guests to bring their specialty spinach or seven-layer dips. Going potluck reduces the overall expense and gives your party more of a traditional barbecue feeling. If it is comfortably sunny outside, you can serve fruity tropical drinks too and fill coolers with beer and soda. Offering cocktails and fruit drinks from hollowed-out pineapples or coconuts would seem to give a tropical touch to the atmosphere. End the party with something hot for your guests before they head back into the cold.

Favourite foods Barbecues are not just about spare ribs, sausages and hamburgers. Turkey, steaks, fish, chicken and even vegetables can be barbecued with different marinades and coatings (like honey or sweet and sour). The side dishes can include your all-time favourite potato salad, baked beans and coleslaw or you can add some more variety of fruits and veggies for a new twist. Don’t forget your vegetarian party guests - try barbecuing vegetables such as diced peppers, zucchini with whole cherry tomatoes on skewers and corn on the cob for them.

Themes & decorations Light up your deck, patio or screened-in porch with strings of coloured Christmas lights. Not only will it give your party extra flair and festivity, it will also offer the cook some extra lighting while cooking on the grill. A fun idea is to put scented candles on the dining table. Instead of that good-old plaid tablecloth find one that has a winter theme. Make a centre piece out of apples, pine cones and bare branches to make the decor look more wintery. Another idea is to make your guests forget about the cold and make it look like a beach party by using beach balls and picnic items. Use beach pails to hold the silverware and plastic pitchers for fruity drinks. Hawaiian decorations are also easy

to come by at party shops, and a few strategically placed fake palm trees, fairy lights and flower garlands give a tropical look which is perfect for an outdoor do. If you are planning your barbecue to coincide with a sporting event, like a big cricket match, football, rugby or even tennis, decorate accordingly with streamers in your team’s colours laced through your trees, and serve appropriate drinks or desserts (like strawberries and cream for a Wimbledon inspired BBQ). You can use either paper plates or your casual dinnerware. If you want to use your set but don’t have enough, ask some of your guests and borrow their sets to mix and match in order to create a fun colour scheme for your party.

Keep your guests entertained You can continue your barbecue trend with the music by breaking out your Jimmy Buffett and The Beach Boys CDs. Unless you happen to have that near-impossible snowstorm on the day of your barbecue, light up the outdoor fire pit or chimenea and have the kids roast marshmallows after they have eaten. Designate part of the garden

furthest away from the cooking area for games and entertainment - this is very important if there are children. Limbo games and hula competitions are always a real laugh for guests, as are garden boules and skittles. Organise a quick scavenger hunt for the guests to help them expend some energy and get a bit of exercise and fresh air. Keep a stash of mini footballs, soft tennis balls and racquets for children to knock around with. Bring the party inside with fun games like twister, charades or other board games. If you think your neighbours can bear it, you could have a karaoke session too!

Practise safety Barbecues are potentially dangerous! Keep children, pets and anyone not involved in the food preparation away from the cooking area, especially when the coals are heating up and cooling down. Practise hygiene and make sure all food is properly cooked. Pre-cook indoors and finish off on the BBQ if necessary. Keep a bucket of water close to the barbecue, just in case. Go ahead and host your BBQ bash. dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

stunning You look

Shed those extra kilos in a few days to flaunt that perfect figure words r a j a n y p r a d h a n

Winter

is surely the time to indulge in sinful binge eating as the season sets the mood just right to enjoy hot fried food and a cup of hot chocolate with cream and coffee. It truly sounds like heaven, isn’t it? But the moment you notice that your extra flab is no longer allowing you to fit into your favourite dress just a few days before the big party night, all the joy vanishes in a second and all that you crave for is your earlier sculpted, to-die-for figure. Relax! Here we tell you how to lose those extra kilos within a span of 15 to 20 days and get in shape. First and foremost, pledge not to give in to any temptation and go on a strict diet. As dietician Honey Tondon from Columbia Asia Hospital, Gurgaon, says, “A person needs to be on a healthy diet and should opt for a balanced lifestyle including intensive workout for weight reduction.”

baby…

Initial five days, kick-start your mornings with a cup of hot lime juice with honey, followed by a protein-rich breakfast like sprouts, shakes made with soy protein or oats. For lunch, you can have a small bowl of rice, three different steamed vegetables and one chapati. In beverage, have sugarless green tea and in the evening have a bowl of sprouts or fibreless fruits. For dinner, have two to three chapatis with a bowl of dal and a bowl of boiled vegetables. Make sure you have your lunch before 1.30pm, evening snacks before 5pm and dinner before 7.30pm. “Even if you are on a diet, salads and fruits are the safest things to binge on when you are feeling hungry,” Honey adds. “For a balanced diet, an individual’s protein intake should be kept moderate and fat intake as minimal as possible (just about 5-10 grams a day), whereas intake of carbohydrates decreases from person to person.”

On the sixth day till the next one week, the first thing you can have in the morning is a cup of hot lime juice with honey or green tea. Have a protein meal for breakfast; one medium cup of brown rice, one or two chapatis and steamed vegetables or vegetable salad for lunch. In the evening, have green tea without sugar and a bowl of fruit. For dinner, have a bowl of salad or boiled vegetables with one or two chapatis. Later, you can squeeze your dinner to a bowl of sprouts or a bowl of fibre containing fruits and continue with the rest as it is. Also, club the diet plan with one hour of brisk walk. For better results, you can walk for 10 minutes and jog for 5 minutes and continue doing the same for an hour. You can also sweat it out in the gym or do yoga. If you are all game to bear the pain, you can surely get into shape before you even know.

Expert advice Missing your meals or fasting to lose that extra weight is a strict no-no, it’s a myth that these practices lead to sudden weight reduction.

If we need to reduce 0.5kg in a week, we need to burn 3,500 kcal. We can reduce 250 kcal from food and burn 250 kcal by doing some activity. That means cutting down on 500 kcal a day.

64 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

Brisk walking for an hour every day helps to lose weight gradually in a span of 15-20 days. Again, this has to be teamed with a proper diet plan otherwise you will end up losing too much weight, which can be harmful.

Burn it out 30 to 60 minutes on a treadmill or stationary bike can help you burn between 250 to 500 calories per hour. Club it with power skip, inchworm or tuck jump. A simple at-home workout can involve brisk walking, jogging or skipping rope. Just be active and get your heart pumping for 30 to 60 minutes a day.

horoscope

Fashion

Horoscope

To give you a head start, we tell you what colours and styles will rule your sunsign and what you should opt for in the new year

ARIES

(March 21-April 19) With this Zodiac sign ruler being Uranus, Aries have a natural flair for fashion trends and bring innovative ideas. And, as usual, these fans of individual style will continue to be ahead of the rest. A word of caution though, keep going your own way even if no one supports you. Your ally will be a great sense of humour. The Aries designers should try their luck at sunglasses, hair accessories, earrings, and cuffs. In the second half of 2014 you will be able to calm down a little and spend more time in your native place. Pick a beautiful silk gown, stylish sleepwear and lingerie for sophisticated seduction.

CANCER

(June 21-July 22) Jupiter, which in the first half of 2014 is in this sign, favours the choice of things that increase the sense of security and provide comfort. Representatives of this sign will be ruled by a new formula of their own for fashion (fashion trends + intuition = good health and happiness in private life). Your wardrobe for the coming year should be large enough to make you feel comfortable in any situation. Your clothing should be constructed of several layers, with outerwear made of dense materials and dresses made from flowing fabrics. In the second half of 2014 you would update your wardrobe for status.

72 dlfpromenade.com/ Dec-Feb 2013-14

TAURUS

2014

GEMINI

(April 20-May 20) With Taureans all set to take a higher position and represent their company at important events, a wardrobe overhaul is a must. Pick status clothes in a simple style. The fine texture and material would be good for creating those first impressions. Therefore, choose fabrics that are now at the height of fashion: jacquard, tweed double-sided, thick shantung and khadi silk, with geometric patterns. These fabrics would add a touch of maturity. Then complete the look with soft, romantic blouses. Lacy lingerie is also a must-have for you. Your colours: navy blue, cobalt, lead-gray, deep cherry and burgundy.

(May 21-June 20) 2013 taught you how to be careful about the things you like and how difficult it is to part with them. In 2014, you need to carefully choose your basic wardrobe items that are designed for long-term wear, regardless of the dictats of fashion trends. In men’s style, the double-breasted coat, wool and mohair jackets would be a good bet anyday, anytime. For everyday wear, you can save the usual multi-layered style, but do add more status accessories to it, like detachable fur detail, a luxury handbag or jewellery that reflects the idea of mobility: pendants, bracelets and rings with charms.

LEO

VIRGO

(July 23-August 22) All Leos out there, be ready for an amazing year, full of happy events and new discoveries in the field of fashion. In mid-July 2014, Jupiter, the planet of great happiness, enters into your Zodiac sign. This astrological event happens only once in 12 years. So, make the most of it and plan for studies in the fashion industry or try your hand at an artistic activity. Turquoise, lemon and cool pastel tones should leave your wardrobe and make space for fine shades of ocher, mustard, burgundy and purple. Perfectly-matched clothes can play an important role in the development of personal happiness.

(August 23-September 22) The next year will be successful for the ones taking their first steps in the development of collections and fashion journalism. Planetary influences limit new contacts, but provide opportunities for design solutions. For designers, it would be good to record their ideas and collect portfolios. You will need to replenish your wardrobe for study and small trips. From September 6 to 29, Venus will be in your Zodiac sign, which will help in the selection of great ensembles of lowkey and inexpensive things. In creating an individual style you should pay attention to the masterly combination of graphic patterns.

Libra

(September 23-October 22) Sorry, but there is not much good news for Libra people as planets do not promise mountains of gold for you. So, do keep a small budget aside for important moments. But you can surely take your usual wear and give it a new life and style. Do not shop for clothes during Mercury retrograde: February 6-28, June 7-July 2, October 4-25, otherwise they will quickly go out of use. Pay attention to accessories, as they can help set the tone for the entire look. Make yourself stylish bags, belts and hats or re-decorate the ones you already have. The colour scheme can distinguish two main areas: the dark contrasting trim on the bright background and colour blocks of two related colours (pink-burgundy, blue-cobalt, etc.).

CAPRICORN

(December 22-January 19) For Capricorn, the first half of the coming year will be held under the sign of partnership. Your spouse will play a major role for you in a big project. After the first half of the year, you will be able to let go at will your desires. And, you will finally be successful in creating an image for yourself that you most prefer. In your individual style visuals, temptation and crisp design lines will take control. The artificial materials that you should use more often are vinyl, nylon and plastic. Wear shoes with the highest heels around the Zodiac month. If you are a designer, try to create new variations on the theme of the familiar narrow trousers: jodhpuris, breeches, pants with stripes, leggings and jeggings.

SCORPIO

SAGITTARIUS

AQUARIUS

PISCES

(October 23-November 21) Luck awaits the Scorpions who are or are looking to be associated with travel, internship abroad or higher education in the field of fashion. Ethnic costumes can be a source of inspiration for the designers. Saturn, your Zodiac sign, might create limitations, but it also supports the internal structure and helps you work on the qualities that make you the unique diamond. For the same, you are recommended to opt for clean and elegant design lines, with monochromatic colour scheme. You can become directly involved in a new golden age of fashion denim. For an evening of dressy outings, use a combination of superelastic and superrigidity materials, embroidery and rhinestones, leather and lace.

(January 20-February 18) Planetary aspects in the new year promise marriage, new partnerships or extension of personal relationships for Aquarians. When it comes to promotion of career, plans would not go as fast as expected. But the sense of inner freedom and the joy of creativity would compensate for that. You are advised to opt for popular and familiar unisexual style which now is gaining new features in parka jackets, leather jackets and parachute pants. Your colours: black, graphite, sand, ocher. Against this neutral background show animal instinct and use the animalistic prints by ocelot, zebra, giraffe in accessories (shoes, handbags, belts, stockings). The designers can create interesting collection of sportswear.

(November 22-December 21) Hard aspects of the planets in the first half of the next year will be automatically reflected in your choice of inharmonious colour combinations and random mixing of disparate pieces of clothing. In mid-summer 2014, Jupiter, your patron, will move from water sign Cancer to fire sign Leo, and as a result things will begin to take shape in your favour. Keep in mind, you do not need to prove anything to anyone as you will be taken adequately in any manner. Designers can come up with ideas that will remain in the bank of fashion for a long time. From your old wardrobe, take out items like coats of arms, braids, chains, patterns: geographic maps, nautical motifs, anchors, compasses and give them a new lease of life.

(February 19-March 20) The first half of 2014 for your sign will be marked by a special taste and ability to naturally predict viable fashion trends. The designers will be able to create styles that will remain long in our dressing rooms and hearts. Use jersey, elastic materials and flowing fabrics, that change colours depending on the lighting, more often in your style. The patterns on your fabrics should resemble algae, corals and mysterious inhabitants of the deep sea. In January, during the retrograde motion of Venus, you can create new topical sets of old items with a retro flavour. This would also be a good time to acquire a valuable and symbolic piece of jewellery that stays with you for a long time. A wedding ring is not in the list though.

The Fashion Bloggers Meet Second Edition

After a successful run of the first edition of Fashion Bloggers Meet, DLF Promenade hosted a bigger and better sequel with a heightened enthusiasm and great collections. The mall patrons witnessed the fashion drama unfold in front of them as the style experts got together to spread and share their affection and understanding of fashion. An unlimited access to fashion vaults of various brands inside the mall, with best of the make-up from Inglot and hair experts from Looks to their aid, the young bloggers were ably armed to create their own unique take on the ideal look for the season. Once again, the platform brought together the best in the blog world for the most exciting of the competitions, which was judged by none other than the feisty young designer Anupama Dayal and Dior boutique director Bhumika Pant. The bloggers styled their muses in the best of fall/winter trends available at the numerous brands housed in DLF Promenade. The bloggers-turned-stylists then created two looks of their choice on a male and female model, who then sashayed down the runway sporting them in style.

Anupama was equally effusive in her praise for the event. “It feels great to be a part of this exciting Fashion Bloggers Meet being organised by DLF Promenade. It’s a great platform to encourage the blogging community, especially now, when they are taking the world by storm,” she said, though not forgetting to give an advice to the new stylists. “I hope this encourages them and we have more youngsters expressing their personal style without being influenced by general trends.” The looks were judged on the criteria of overall impact, wearability, originality, detailing and presentation. The brands that participated in the event: Zara, Charles & Keith, Aldo, Marks & Spencer, Armani Jeans, Promod, Bebe, Calvin Klein Jeans, UCB, DKNY, Geox, Label Ritu Kumar, s. Oliver, Bysi, Forever New, Louis Phillipe, Van Huesen, Boggi Milano, Zodiac, Woodland, Woods, Surreal, Wills Lifestyle, Dayal Opticals, D&A, Latin Quarters, Nine, Indian Terrain, House of Blondie, Bloom and W. Mamagoto, meanwhile, hosted a small post-event get together for the bloggers.
