Café Social 19th October – 7th December

There is a need to create a Café/Social place in which different ‘groups’ of people can meet and socialise. Cities recognise this and require you to produce a series of ideas for different free standing building’s and Interior Designed Café spaces. The structure you create should provide indoor and outdoor space with the ability to adjust/expand depending on the weather. Your building will be designed for a specific site in Aldgate as shown in the images at the end of this brief.

The set location is Aldgate Square. Aldgate Square is a new public space located between Sir John Cass's Foundation Primary School and St Botolph without Aldgate C hurch just west of Aldgate Underg round Station. The main square inclu des a central lawn area flanked by generous raised planters which provide informal seating.

What is Industrial Aesthetic? Industrial aesthetics is a style of design that takes inspiration from old factories and industrial spaces. Industrial design can also be seen by using unexpected materials used in building. The key material used in this design concept is metal and corrugated materials. Another idea that is key is the interior space. Which can have a change in mood with a darker atmosphere giving it the industrial look with the dim warm lighting.

This idea is very popular with dining areas and hotels. You may find that many of these designs have metallic pipes still showing on the walls and roof to give it that unfinished industrial look.

Industrial Aesthetic – Primary Research

Colour scheme

For Primary research, I began by taking pictures of objects that were related to the theme given to us for project. I went to an Industrial gym setting and took pictures of the ceiling structure which you can see has an industrial appeal to it. Despite just focusing on the general form of the material, I paid great attention to the details of the shapes and what effect they give. Having this primary research really helped me with my design as it gave me something to relate to and gain inspiration from when creating industrial designs.

Pavilions

This is a Pavilion, it’s purpose is for a Music performance arena. I chose this design to research into as it has high potential to be used as a café and meets some of the criteria from the brief already The fact that is open means that the design could wok for a café as in the summer you could enjoy your drinks whilst still being in the sun. It would also work well for the location we have been given for our brief which is Aldgate Square. This building would also attract tourists as it is an irregular shape and this means that people would want to have a look inside. This would also work well as a café for tourists as you can experience the City of London even when you are inside as the wall is not there and anyone in café will feel a part of the city as well. One the right you can see the first stages of my development on the design making the structure more appropriate for a café. I decided to keep the open front idea as a key aspect of the design as it helps to keep the café cool in the summer. Also if the café has a sliding door at the front then it can keep the building warm and also it can

Café Research

This café is called the Choui Fong Tea Café. This Café is made of a handful of materials like metal glass wood and concrete. All of these materials resemble the idea of Industrial Aesthetic. It is situated in the middle of a rural hilly area. So the industrial building situated in the middle of this space stands out and exaggerates the industrial aesthetic of the deign.

Straw Bale Cafe

CafĂŠ Research

This is the Straw Bale CafĂŠ. It is fully insulated with hay bales giving it extremely good insulation. The design is very eco friendly and this means that it is designed out of material that do not cause harm to the environment. The main materials used to make this building are glass and metal for the framework this gives it the industrial aesthetic. The design has easy wheelchair access and has more than enough scope to have washroom facilities embedded into it. It also has the outdoor eating area already set up and has high potential for even a balcony on the top. Making it useful for the summer time.

I decided to keep the open front idea as a key aspect of the design as it helps to keep the café cool in the summer. Also if the café has a sliding door at the front then it can keep the building warm and also it can allow light into the building giving the space an open effect. The curved shape gives it a modern look, when cladded it would be appropriate to clad the shape with a wooden effect. This is a key aspect of all industrial aesthetic and is a key aspect

Development on Pavilion - ArchiCAD

This is my developed design of the previous Pavilion. I used ArchiCAD to develop my deign further this allowed me to add more smaller details and bring the design to life. I implemented a open top design so the café has two floors. The top floor is a fully open outdoor space and this meets the design brief. I have also made the café easily accessible for a disabled person as the door is the size of the wall so it easily allows wheelchair access. By having the wall taken out on one side it makes the building stand out and also allows the building to feel open on the inside. It also is welcoming and encourages people to come in and have a look and allows the atmosphere of the café to extend to the outside as well.

The café also has washroom facilities at the back which are added by an extension to the shape which is an extension from the previous model. This means that this area is not cramped and this allows for a more spacious space. The theme of Industrial Aesthetic is also portrayed in the design as there is a lot of metal showing giving the building a sort of unfinished look. The lighting of the café could also help portray an industrial aesthetic by experimenting with the type of light bulb and if a warm white bulb was used it gives the café a dark yet warm affect on the inside which means that the café has a comfortable interior and takes on the industrial aesthetic.

CafĂŠ Research Model Making Metal / concrete roof for industrial aesthetic

Outdoor space for dining

This model is a development on the idea from the Choui Fong Tea CafĂŠ. I decided to have the walls removed so it suites a warmer condition. However, it has potential for temporary walls and this means that when the weather gets a bit colder then the cafĂŠ can remain warm. There is also a glass area for people to have the option to sit indoors and for the kitchen area and storage to be located. The roof and floor could be concrete or metal and this means that it has an industrial aesthetic. The shape of the design also makes it very easy to lift and relocate the design in another location which was part of the design specification.

Final Developed Model

This model is actually made from breaking apart my previous two models. I felt that the best way to develop my ideas was to integrate parts of each idea and combine the best bits and this has helped be design this model. The majority of the round circle which makes up the majority of the model is made from the curved wall on my cafĂŠ that I had made previously. The cafĂŠ has two floors which gives extra seating space making the space more practical. The balcony and the extended space below allows for outdoor eating which meets the brief given to us for this design. The open fronted design is brought over from the design of the previous model. This allows people to see straight through the design and makes the space look more open and bigger to the eye. I integrated a corrugated shape on the outside which gives an Industrial aesthetic to the exterior of the building. Having finished the design I decided to add some greenery on the outside to help merge the surrounding of where it is situated in a park area in Aldgate Square. This means that the building goes well with its surroundings and this means that the idea of an industrial aesthetic in the mix of a park works well.
