AWAKENING ISOLATION WITHIN A CROWD / A MODERN DAY PANDEMIC

The architecture will create spaces that educate visitors about the isolation of the crowd by offering an interactive and experience-based environment describing the causes, dangers, consequences and potential remedies to the issue of modern social isolation.

This will result in a population that is more aware of the issue, better able to address it as individuals and as a society and be more empathetic of those whose experience with social isolation leads to darker outcomes.

“As a society, we do little to support emerging adults at precisely the time when they are dealing with the most defining, stressful decisions of their lives related to work, love, and identity. Who to love? What to be?” — LONELINESS IN AMERICA The

REFUGE A PROPOSAL FOR TOMORROW

The project is aimed at revitalizing the existing parking lots of D.A.R.T stations and to provide housing for our community members in need. The project’s location is aimed to foster the connection between the community members and the greater city, by offering the freedom of travel for any need. Within the project, counseling spaces, small dining facilities and recreational spaces in turn foster connections between the community members and evoke a sense of growth through a variety of programs.

The structures allow for the ever-changing needs and growth of the community, as a variety of pre-fabricated pods may be switched in and out to respond to the needs of its occupants.

The overall project is aimed to rebuild a community in need and reconnect that community both to itself and to the city through a variety of social projects and an environment that better supports the community’s needs. At it’s root, the purpose is to provide housing for those in need, and resources to rebuild their lives step-by-step through guidance and support.

CASCADE AGING IN PLACE / ADAPTIVE RE-USE

The foundation of this project is an unapologetically brutalist 6-story office building that has been unoccupied since the surrounding naval base was closed in the 1990’s The design seeks to incorporate key elements of the original architecture but still have a design that is both less stark and creates stronger links to the surrounding environment and the nautical history of the area.

To achieve that objective, parts of the building have been opened up to let light and air flow through the structure, creating the illusion of being at sea, while the interior has been extensively rebuilt, allowing the occupants more open views of the surroundings and the newly designed park behind the building itself.

The residence tower is a new addition to the existing structure, expanding the useable square footage of the building and using glass and steel to provide a lighter vertical counterpoint to the solid concrete of the original building. The design incorporates wind-powered electricity generating meshwork, that form flowing curves around the building evoking images of waves cresting in the ocean.
