RESULTS

NORTHERN

CALIFORNIA TOURNAMENT January 8th, 1953 American Judo Academy at San Francisco Mr. Roy Layman and Dr. Philip S. Haley conducted a very successful tournament held under the auspices of the American Judo and Jiu Jitsu Federation. One of the groups that made up part of the large entry was the powerful Navy Judo Class from Treasure Island Naval Base. The Instructor of this group, Glen Smith of the A.J.J.F., can be proud of the showing his boys made. Keep an eye on Joe Osuno, a white belter from the American Judo Academy. Joe, who had only ten evenings of instruction, scored two successive Circle Throws against more experienced and heavier opponents, in the first few minutes of the match. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TOURNAMENT January 11th, 1953 National Judo Association at Studio City The National Judo Association Day and Night teams rematched as scheduled; But this time the Night team made a clear sweep with the fine Judo technique and skill of John Machin, Green Belt of the Night Team. Machin contested three men, defeating them one after another and tying with the .fourth man, John Machin scoring all 3 points against the Day Team's Score O. The remaining men on both teams contested but scored no points. This same afternoon the Judges of this contest selected Machin to compete for his Third Brown Belt Degree due to his outstanding ability. His skillful performance again warranted a winning. He fought and won his third Brown Belt. Machin's earnings for this eventful day was a team trophy and his Brown Belt degree.

It always gives the Judo Magazine pleasure to write about the progress of Judo in America. As of last December, 1952, at the National Convention held at Spokane, Washington, the Amateur Athletic Union granted Judo equal recognition with all other sports.

A VIRILE DOG FOR

TEGNER'S COLLIES 11275 Ventura Boulevard Studio City, California Phone: Sunset 3-9871

VIRILE PEOPLE By Margaret

Graham

My introduction to Judo, its aims, ideals and background has come through the pages of Judo Magazine. Now that I understand the meaning of the words "JiuJitsu" and "Judo," I aiso understand the affinity of Judo enthusiasts and Collies-for theirs is the gentle, softway indeed. But don't let their beauty and Lord Chesterfield manner deceive you. The dog described here holds a certificate from Pierce College as a Guard Dog. He will jump a fivefoot hurdle and disarm a man quick as a wink. The whispered words "Watch It" will bring him upstairs to my side in two leaps. Yet he plays with the children as gently as though he had never learned that evil existed and can hold his own in the show ring, beside. This is no super one-in-a-thousand dog. He's just Collie. There are hundreds just like him bred every year-so

He fought gallantly, as he slashed and bit at me,

stumbling puppy your guard dog of next year and many years to come.

I was struggling hard, but could not get free. Twas no usp., to avoid the attack, I had to face him, and bite him back. I had no choice, but to hang on, Although my strength, soon would be gone. I don't know why, he has such hate for me. For I'm just,

THE ART OF FALLING - BASIC ROLLING SIDEWAYS (Crouch Position)

Place your feet on the mat about shoulder width keeping your knees bent, and pointing your knees, and toes out to a 45 degree angle, then place your right hand palm down on the mat keeping your right elbow bent an even distance from both feet making a triangle, and pointing the right fingers in the same direction as your left foot, slide your left hand to the center of the triangle keeping your left elbow bent, and pointing the left fingers towards your right foot. (as illustrated in Photo No.1).

PHOTO NO. 1

NOTE: Distribute your weight equally between your feet, and your right hand with no weight on your left hand.

Now transfer your weight from your right leg, and your right arm to your left leg, and your left arm, being sure to keep your left arm bent yet firm enough to carry the weight of your body, transfer your weight from your left leg towards your left, now roll on your left arm, and shoulder, duck your head as you roll. (as illustrated in Photo No.2).

PHOTO NO. 2

PHOTO NO. S

Swing your right hand to the mat in a 45 degree angle from your body keeping the arm relaxed, and the hand slightly cupped, and at the same instance swing your left leg over to your right side while turning your body in a lateral position. Keep your right leg straight, and relaxed, and bend your left leg at the knee, place your left foot flat on the mat at a 45 degree angle from your body, and your head through the entire procedure is off the mat. (as illustrated in Photo No.3). 6

THE ART OF

FALLING

(Basic)

LEARNING TO FALL CORRECTLYis just as important as learning to throw, otherwise you cannot receive your falls when being thrown, without the danger of bruises, or injury. Falling is an art, when once mastered you may fall safely from any throw no matter how speedily, or unexpected it is delivered. Also you may save yourself from injury in falling on the street, and in the home which is such a common occurrence in everyday life. The best way to learn the art of falling is to start practicing rolls from the ground, and then gradually building them up higher until they become falls ih the air. By learning the following basic falls you will not only be preparing yourself for greater safety, but you will derive from the movements a stronger, .well coordinated trim body.

ATTENTION

ilLEST WE FORGET"

ALL JUDO

A great big vote of thanks from Judo Magazine to Dr. Philip Haley of San Francisco's American Judo Academy for his splendid interest in fUl1herin~ Judo. Dr. Haley took time off to send reports on Tournament Dates and Tournament Results for Northern California. Indeed Northern California's Judo activity is something for all Judo men to be proud of and with a Judo man of Dr. Haley's caliber in their midst they are bound for huge success. More news of Northern California's Judo Activities will be forthcoming in Judo Magazine's next issue. "Honey" Welch of the delightful Welch Judo family is very much responsible for the excellent Judo that's portrayed by Dad, James Welch, and sons, Brian and David. For you see, besides taking much interest in their Judo, "Honey" is the best cook this side of heaven. We know-because when "Honey" Welch packs her Judo family to a National Judo Association practice session she also packs along some of the best tasting cakes, cookies, and delicacies that on second thought, are just heavenly! Mr. and Mrs. Heil, Judo Magazine Subscribers, took a trip from Hollywood to Studio City (National Judo Association's tranch school> where they were informed that National Judo Association's main school was now located in Hollywood; these nice people changed their course and headed for the National Judo Association's Hollywood School where they deposited a box full of assorted flowers for the patio. All of National Judo Association's "green thumbs" immediately went to work in the garden. The Hollywood National Judo Association hopes to have Mr. and Mrs. Heil as their guests when the flowers start blooming. Pictures of the Patio have been promised to Judo Magazine. Note to Chamber of Commerce: With Southern California's never failing sunshine we expect the pictures to be be!lutiful. Thanks to "Collie Cues" for the nice mention of Judo Magazine in their February, 1953 issue. "Lest we should forget" all Judo folks who own Collies will benefit greatly from reading "Collie Clues." Kendrick Martin, the editor of this Collie Magazine, has a fine sense of humor and publishes lots of wonderful "show" and valuable Collie articles as well. As for the sense of humor-What Magazine Editor dares be without one. Best wishes for continued success from one magazine to .anothe:-.
