Awards 2015

Recognizing CSR Best Practices

‘INDIACSR Community Initiative Awards’ is a milestone and an iconic event that acknowledges the unique and extraordinary contributions in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) domain. This is a premium honour that recognizes the most admired and outstanding CSR initiatives and ventures in India. The awards acknowledge the noble contributions in the CSR domain that are raising benchmarks by bringing radical and transformative change in the development arena through innovation and excellence. The awards acknowledge the noble contributions in the CSR domain bringing radical and transformative change in the development arena. The INDIACSR Community Initiative Awards, in various categories, is open to all companies and organizations registered in India that engage in social responsibility. The Awards are open for nomination by all companies, corporate funded foundations and partnerships operating in India. If you have made incredible achievements and have actualized CSR in true sense, then the award and recognition is made just for you.

SR in modern times has to evolve as a journey of constant innovation. The CSR professionals have to think in a different way which we sometimes call it as out of the box thinking. Innovation in the area of CSR has become need of the hour because the government and regulatory bodies are now focusing more and more on the social impact assessment of the program. It does not really matter how much money has been spent in the CSR activity but what really matters is what has been the overall social impact of the CSR program on the local communities. It is very important to understand that innovation in the area of CSR will have manifold impact. It shall improve the overall productivity of the people, processes and technologies apart from maximising the overall impact on the local community. The people at various levels of the organisation have to understand that innovation has to come in various forms at different levels and can be contributed by people at various levels of the organisational hierarchy. The innovation in CSR projects has become more and more important in modern times as the CSR projects have to become meaningful, engaging, having relevance and should be aimed at achieving high social impact. We may evolve a model to calculate the overall social impact on the lines of ROI in the corporate world. ROI

RUSEN KUMAR MD & Editor rusenk@indiacsr.in

calculates the overall return on investment. On the same lines we may be in a position to calculate the cost of overall social impact of a CSR Project. This will increase the awareness level among the CSR professionals thinking for conceptualising a meaningful, engaging, relevant CSR program customised to local needs rather than mindlessly copying the CSR programs of other organisations. The era of change across the globe makes it imperative for all CSR professionals to be consistently thinking, evolving and innovating CSR projects which are socially relevant, cost effective, socially engaging, cost effective apart from ensuring the overall social impact to ensure that the CSR project proves to be rational in terms of justifying the overall cost for the overall social impact which the project has generated or is likely to generate. The simple rule of thumb shall be to evaluate the CSR project from various angles and dimensions apart from being focussed at making the project innovative, socially engaging and maximising the overall impact on the local communities. The spirit of innovation will help in minimising the cost, maximising the productivity and overall social impact on the communities. I wish all CSR professionals a grand success in their endeavours.

T

he CSR domain is becoming more and more important as the government and the regulatory bodies are expecting enhanced level of transparency in CSR activities and reporting. The regulatory bodies are becoming more and more demanding in terms of the CSR activities and its ethical reporting to the various internal and external stakeholders. The organisations are expected to focus sincerely on the people, process and technologies to make the society, economy, and the overall planet at large a better place to live. The organisations are required to focus on two fold approach. Firstly the organisations are required to evolve strategies, policies and action plans which is aligned to the local needs after doing requisite needs assessment and feasibility analysis. The corporate entities are also recommended to conduct the overall impact assessment of the program apart from ensuring scrupulous compliance to the various applicable laws, guidelines and regulations followed by transparent process of accounting to account for the various expenditures incurred in the whole process.

The process of meticulous planning, focused implementation of the plans and strategies followed by preparation of the overall accounts of the whole program needs holistic focus by the various echelons of management. The organisations may like to structure well developed mechanisms to ensure that implementation of the programs are smooth and make sincere efforts to ensure that the impact of the CSR programs are sustainable. The organization are recommended to analyse the best practices at local, regional, national and international level. The best practices are to analysed and adopted if they are found suitable and acceptable. The best practices may also be customised to suit the interests of the locality, and the organization keeping in mind the demands of the implementation model of the program. To summarise it would be apt to recommend two pronged approach for the organisations to focus on both action as well as focus on ethical reporting of the accomplished goals and objectives. The organisations are also required to focus on compliance to the stipulated laws, guidelines and reporting requirements.

The group has the mandate to caution the regulator on possible hurdles, besides counselling on interface areas with fellow regulators. On March 30, SEBI had come out with a discussion paper on alternate capital raising platform and review of other regulatory requirements to sort out the dilemma between investor protection and an enabling environment for start-ups to receive early-stage funding. SEBI observed that its requirements related to promoters offering a minimum 20 per cent of the post-issue capital as lock-in for three years, detailed disclosure on objects of the issue, etc. In the discussion paper, SEBI proposed that the institutional trading platform be used for listing start-ups, besides mandating that the entire preissue equity capital be locked-in only for six months uniformly for all shareholders. SEBI had proposed that the basis of issue price may include disclosures, other than projections, as deemed fit by the issuers to enable investors take informed decisions. Why 'Make in India' is Very Much India Inc's Job It's a different way of thinking. Most of these organisations are global giants that have sustained over decades and are into their third or fourth generation of workforce.

W

hen asked by British Prime Minister Tony Blair what the secret of Germany's economic success was, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had famously replied, 'Mr Blair, we still make things' Having returned last month from the Hannover Messe, there is little doubt that I will visit this trade fair again. The key manufacturing themes at Hannover were Industry 4.0 (next generation manufacturing technologies), Additive manufacturing (3D printing), Lightweight manufacturing (composites and nanomaterials), Energy efficiency (the coexistence of cost-effective and environment-friendly energy sources) and Robotics. These topics were absent from our parlance just five years ago. Today, they are an essential part of many of our day-to-day discussions. Today,

16

CSR&COMPETITIVENESS

given that manufacturing is being globally revolutionised by technology, it is obvious that India will have to ready itself. Projections made by a recent Boston Consulting Group study state that by 2025, manufacturing costs are anticipated to be 18-33% lower in economies in which robotics and automation are leveraged. The same report also points out staggering benefits that are already being derived. The cost of a robot executing an operation, for instance, is about $4-8 an hour against $25 for a human. However, while technology can be purchased, technology alone will not suffice. Therefore, if India is to fulfill its dream of becoming a global manufacturing power, it will have to act on several fronts. First, the development of a welltrained and skilled labour force cannot be just left to the government. It has to

equally be the responsibility of corporate institutions. While the government can facilitate through subsidized institutes, the only way to develop an employable workforce is through 'apprenticeships' that only corporate entities can provide. Investing in helping the bottom base of the pyramid and helping upskill them is not CSR (corporate social responsibility). It is nation-building. Next is dignity of labour. During my trip to Germany, I met several executives and visited some state-ofthe-art factories. One common theme that emerged in my discussions was the continued investment and care for the 'last-mile' employees. Many felt proud when some of their best workers left to make their mark elsewhere, making room for the next set of trained employees to take over. It's a different way of thinking. Most of these organisations are global giants that have sustained over decades and are into their third or fourth generation of workforce. It is such continued diffusion of a trained workforce that,

over years, drives a nation's competitive edge. The problem is that somewhere down the years, Indian corporate houses got so focused on generic training for the 'top of the pyramid' that we forgot who actually needed to be trained. Till the time we, as large corporates, are sincere in our intent to recognize this 'last mile' of employees who actually do the execution, and prioritize investments for their growth and development, we will not be able to build an employable workforce crucial to drive the growth of the small and mid-market manufacturing businesses. If we get this cycle right over the next decade, India will be relevant and grow as a manufacturing powerhouse. The government is doing what it needs to do. It is corporate houses that now need to step up and do our bit if we want to provide the dignity our workers deserve. Patriotism is not about past glory. It is about making the present and future equitable for those that need early doors to be opened. That is the dream of 'Make in India'.

First, the development of a welltrained and skilled labour force cannot be just left to the government. It has to equally be the responsibility of corporate institutions.

ew Book 'The Aspirational Investor' By Ashvin Chhabra outlines Investing in the Pursuit of Wealth and Happiness. The book being published by Random House India (Penguin Random House) is now available. Ashvin's book explains how to break down a seemingly very complex problem – how we should invest our money – into manageable steps. The cost of the book is Rs 699 (hardback). In The Aspirational Investor, Ashvin B. Chhabra outlines a ground-breaking yet intuitive approach to managing wealth, based on the identification of key goals and the careful allocation of resources and risks. The Wealth Allocation Framework will help you connect your investment portfolio with your life's goals, and accommodate the three seemingly incompatible objectives that must underpin every sound wealth management strategy: the need for financial security in the face of unknowable risks, the desire to

20

CSR&COMPETITIVENESS

maintain current living standards despite inflation, and the opportunity for life-changing wealth creation. We need a framework that shifts the focus of investment strategy from portfolios and markets to individuals and the objectives that really matter: protection against unexpected financial crises or retirement planning. Whatever matters most to you—paying for your kid's education, starting your own business, endowing your favorite charity, or traveling the world—you need a road map to help you achieve both your essential and aspirational goals. Why are otherwise smart and competent people such lousy investors? Individual investors give up as much as two-thirds of their potential investment returns in misguided efforts to beat the market—and most don't even realize it. Ashvin B. Chhabra, chief investment officer of one of the world's largest wealth management firms, explains that an important idea has gotten lost amid the relentless pursuit of investment

returns. Rather than trying to beat the market, your primary goal should be to construct an investment strategy that creates a solid safety net and enables you to pursue your dreams and aspirations. With no more guarantee of lifelong jobs or pensions, all of us bear the burden of investing wisely. But many of us focus on the wrong set of investment activities, such as identifying the next great start-up or star fund manager, or simply beating a market benchmark. Even the standard framework for investing, modern portfolio theory, offers an incomplete solution. Meanwhile, the grand debates in finance, such as indexing versus active management, prioritize the wrong set of issues. Chhabra's pioneering work illuminates some surprising facts about how people get very wealthy, and reinterprets the success formulas of investing greats such as Warren Buffett and David Swensen. Chhabra also offers a novel perspective: If the markets don't really care about you, as surely they do not, then why should you spend all your time and effort trying to beat them? Raising the bar for what we should expect from our investment portfolios—and from our investment advisors—The Aspirational Investor is a thoughtful, practical guide for any investor, regardless of income or wealth level. Ashvin B Chhabra is the chief investment officer of Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, Bank of America. He is widely recognised for being one of the founders of Goals-Based Wealth Management and for his seminal work 'Beyond Markowitz', which integrates

CSR – Integrating Two Worlds:

Corporates & Communities Creating a strong business and building a better world are not conflicting goals – they are both essential ingredients for long-term success – William Clay Ford

W

hen our CEO asked me to take on the project of tying together the various outreach and community activist programs that were going on within our organization under one umbrella CSR program, I thought…”Wow! Where do I start?” I knew it was important for our company and that we have many employees that had been suggesting ideas and activities that they would like to see us drive, but getting those same people organized and contributing time to the same initiative would be a challenge! So, I did what anyone would do and started evaluating the experience I have had with the Rotary club and learnings from that combined with extensive research into what is working today. To start with, I wanted to understand how CSR has evolved over the years. And, while CSR has gained considerable acceptance over the years. Its scope has broadened, and for the better. A look at the past; Yester years: n CSR meant philanthropy, and at best, an individual's emotional need n The social cost of “Give and take” was not accounted

24

CSR&COMPETITIVENESS

Altruism and charity were transient n And, where we are headed: n For CSR to be sustainable, corporations must be convinced that it is good for business n CSR has been proven to promote long-term profits for business n Companies are looking for a strategic CSR plan that will impact long term, fundamental impact and change but can also be assessed, monitored and reported on. This evaluation got me to thinking about what has fundamentally changed for CSR initiatives, hence the title of this piece. You must be wondering why I used responsivity instead of responsibility? As CSR has matured in its sophistication, the expectations from companies that invest in these programs and the recipients of their goodwill has also matured. No longer is responsibility sufficient for companies to embrace, but the investments being made take on more than responsibility, they require a heightened level of awareness of the need that exists and a highly responsive structure to be successful. Socio-economic, political, n

and cultural events are affecting the business environment in an unprecedented way. Hence, by referring to the “R” in CSR as Responsivity we will see companies to responding accordingly and… n Move from obligation to Action n Move from Accountability to Activity n Move from Reactive to Proactive So, now we understand the level of our obligation when implementing a CSR program, but selecting from the overwhelming need in the world was our next big challenge. There are plenty of issues at hand ranging from Hunger, Health, Education, women empowerment, and so forth, but how can we adopt a focused approach to social responsivity? I decided that we needed to narrow our focus to something the majority of our team felt passionate about. A recurring theme was the fact that we all agreed that supporting under privileged children is one fantastic and impactful way of creating a better world. In this case, we focused on India. India has 440 million children. That's more than the entire population of the United States, Mexico, and Canada put together. Every fifth child in the world is Indian. The number of children in poverty in India is staggering. No food, shelter, or basic healthcare is provided consistently. There is no shortage of need. For example: Mortality rates for children are staggering: n India has over 200 million people in hunger, and 40% of them are children. n About 27 million children are born each year in India but nearly 2 million of them do not live to the

csrcompetitiveness.org

age of five. Education has major gaps for children: n The majority of children are enrolled in school, but up to half don't attend regularly. n After five years of classes, fewer than 60% can read a short story or do simple arithmetic. n More than 35 million children in the (6-14) age group are out of school. n Many are pressured to work and earn money for their families n And you will be shocked to know that there are 12 Million Child Laborers in India. Do the figures in the above infographic alarm you? They should. We barely need to look around to know that there is a mountain of evidence screaming at us to focus on Healthcare, Education, Nutrition, & Skill Development for the children that will be leading our society of tomorrow. Our collective goal should be to make all children independent, confident, and hopeful that their lives mean something to the world and that we will do all we can make them successful and happy in life.

Under the Khadakwasla Lake Rejuvenation project in Pune, in partnership with the NGO - Green Thumb, Cummins has been engaging in the desilting of the Khadakwasla lake, created a recharge of close to 3,373 million gallons of water, till date. Ahead of the World Environment Day 26

CSR&COMPETITIVENESS

on June 5, in the third phase of this project, close to 200 Cummins employees volunteered to plant an additional 5,000 trees at the banks of the lake. Initiated by Green Thumb three years ago in 2012, Cummins entered the project soon after, with the intent to scale it up with its technical expertise and employee participation, in activities involving de-silting, plantation and maintenance of trees. In the first two phases, following desilting of a 1.5 km-stretch, the soil unearthed from the bottom of the lake was recycled to create a green belt surrounding the periphery of the dam.

This belt has now become a habitat for various species of birds and butterflies as well as a pleasant walk-way for nature lovers. Hume pipes were installed and the two exiting culverts were cleaned for collecting the surface run-off water. The Khadakwasla Lake Rejuvenation project, now in its third phase, aims to achieve the following: 타 De-silting another 1 km, pitching of soil, tree plantation and maintenance 타 Creating awareness about water conservation in educational institutes & residential societies Collectively, across all three phases, 9,000 trees have been planted, with more than 1000 Cummins employees spending over 4,200 hours towards the many activities of the project. In order to further scale up de-silting across the full 22 kms stretch of the lake, corporates like Tata Motors and Praj Industries have also joined hands with Cummins and Green Thumb. This project is a part of the Water

Neutrality drive that Cummins undertakes as part its Corporate Responsibility. The drive involves reducing water usage at all of its manufacturing facilities in Pune, Phaltan, Jamshedpur, Ahmednagar, Dewas and Pithampur, while also investing in projects that make water available to the communities.

All the activities under this project are making significant progress in replenishing this important resource back into the environment, for the benefit of the communities residing in Pune. Since 2012, we have engaged in multiple projects successfully involving our employees in all activities along with the support of our NGO partners.

10 Simple Steps to Save Environment Every year many states in India like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat etc. reel under acute water scarcity. The problem becomes worst in summer when the city faces severe water cuts.

T

here is no denying that the environment around us is constantly changing. However, with a massive increase in the influx of disasters - natural and man-made, there is an urgent need to become increasingly aware, attentive and conscious of the types of environmental problems our planet is facing and take measures to combat them on an urgent basis. People are facing a wealth of new-age environmental problems every day, some of them are small and affect a few ecosystems, while others are drastically transmuting into severe environmental crises. 28

CSR&COMPETITIVENESS

Across India, concern is mounting over an ever growing list of environmental problems. Evidence suggests that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably offer. The wellbeing of humanity, environment and economies ultimately depends on the judicious use of resources. Hence, one needs to work out on a promising strategy, within planetary boundaries, to ensure a brighter and safe tomorrow. Among the uncountable environmental problems that exist, water and air pollution are the gravest of them all. Every year many states in

India like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat etc. reel under acute water scarcity. The problem becomes worst in summer when the city faces severe water cuts. This situation gets aggravated as monsoons are becoming less dependent, putting stress on available water resources, which again is highly contaminated. India's struggle with air pollution too is not alien to us. According to WHO, there have been 8 million premature deaths in 2012 because of poor air quality, making air pollution one of the world's single largest environmental health risk. Out of which, 4.3 million deaths could be directly attributed to indoor air pollution. On this World Environment Day, let's begin to take small but impactful steps to make this world a better place for ourselves, our children and for generations to come: n Conserve energy! Turn off the lights and appliances when not in use n Say no to plastic bags when you shop. Use cloth bags instead n Don't keep the tap running while brushing your teeth. This can save you as much as 11 litres every time! n Check for tap leakages. It can save 24 litres of water n Did you know your water purifier could be responsible for wastage of water? For 1 glass of drinking water, RO technology uses 7 glasses of water. Using incorrect purification techniques like RO in places where TDS is below 200ppm could result in the consumption of distilled water which is detrimental to health. Thus it is of prime importance to use the right technology for purification so that all the essential minerals

present in water are retained Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, and then reuse it to water plants In order to keep the air fresh within the confines of your house, try installing a good quality air purifier with a high efficiency particulate air filtration (HEPA) filter. This will trap small particles and pollutants, thereby significantly improving the air and therefore the environment Club your work - hit the post office, grocery store and shopping place in one trip. It will save you gas, time and effort We often tend to wash our clothes in machines when there are only handful of dirty laundry. Instead run a machine once you collect a bag full of clothes Most importantly, plant a tree with friends or family on this World Environment Day!

Catastrophic Collapse of

Saiga Antelopes in Central Asia

More than 120,000 saiga antelope have been confirmed dead in central Kazakhstan, representing more than a third of the global population.

The Saiga Antelopes of Central Asia is history now. Not a single animal of this species is alive in Central Asia, particularly in Kazakhstan. Preliminary analysis indicates that a combination of environmental and biological factors is has contributed to this catastrophic loss.

T

he aerial survey conducted as part of the national monitoring programme earlier this year estimated that the Betpak-dala Saiga population numbered approximately 250,000 animals prior to this mass die36

off, which has therefore halved the total population. This is a major blow for conservation efforts given that saigas have in the past ten years only just started to recover from a global population size of less than 50,000

animals following a 95% crash in numbers. Preliminary analysis indicates that a combination of environmental and biological factors is contributing to this catastrophic event, which has seen four large birth aggregations of this critically endangered antelope eradicated since mid-May this year. Primarily mothers and calves are amongst the carcasses; not a single animal survived in the affected herds. At the request of Kazakhstan, the Secretariat of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) despatched an emergency mission on May 21, 2015 with experts from the Royal Veterinary College in the United Kingdom and the Food and Agriculture Organization to assist on the ground with postmortem examination, analysis and to contribute to the working group. CMS Executive Secretary, Bradnee Chambers said “Authorities in Kazakhstan are responding quickly to this disaster and are working hard to solve the mystery behind this mass saiga die-off. I am pleased that the international expert mission we were able to send, at very short notice, is now contributing to these efforts". According to information received from the members of the CMS expert mission, it is becoming clear that two secondary opportunistic pathogens, specifically Pasteurella and Clostridia, are contributing to the rapid and widespread die-off. However, the hunt for the fundamental drivers of the mass mortality continues since these bacteria are only lethal to an animal if its immune system is already weakened. UNEP/CMS Secretariat Aline KĂźhl-Stenzel has been supporting the expert mission

csrcompetitiveness.org

remotely from the Convention's headquarters in Bonn, Germany. Kazakhstan has been actively implementing the CMS Memorandum of Understanding concerning Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use of the Saiga Antelope (Saiga MOU), not least through establishing new protected areas and anti-poaching patrols. Other partners that have signed the MOU, namely the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK) have been providing funds, as well as technical and logistical support for the emergency response, including the CMS expert mission. The Saiga Conservation Alliance, another partner of the MOU, has provided scientific input.

This loss is a huge blow for saiga conservation in Kazakhstan and in the world, given that 90% of the global saiga population is found in our country. It is very painful to witness this mass mortality. We established a working group that includes all relevant experts, including international ones, and are determined to identify the causes and undertake all possible efforts to avoid such events in the future.

COVER STORY The most severe known case happened in 1984, when about 100,000 (67 per cent) of the saigas died in the Ural population in Kazakhstan. The causes of the previous mass mortality incidents could not be conclusively identified. Since 2010 a series of veterinary training sessions have built capacity within Kazakhstan, which will no doubt improve the post mortem analysis and documentation of the current mass mortality event.

The aerial survey conducted as part of the national monitoring programme earlier this year estimated that the Betpak-dala population numbered approximately 250,000 animals prior to this mass die-off, which has therefore halved the total population. It is likely that final estimates may extend beyond 120,000 dead saigas since the counting of carcasses by emergency response teams is continuing. It is however becoming clear that the mass die-off has come to an end and that several GPS-collared animals are still alive in herds that were not affected by the mortality event. The mass die-off destroys hope that the Betpak-dala population has once again reached a stable level. Population figures for 2014 estimated the size of 38

CSR&COMPETITIVENESS

this population around 200,000 animals, with perhaps a total of 260,000 saigas in the whole of the range. These numbers will now have to be dramatically revised and conservation action will have to be significantly strengthened as a result.

3rd Mass Mortality Saiga populations do from time to time suffer from mass mortality events. The most severe known case happened in 1984, when about 100,000 (67 per cent) of the saigas died in the Ural population in Kazakhstan. However, the current case is already the third mass mortality episode to have occurred in recent years. In the two other cases, similar symptoms caused the deaths of saigas in the Ural

population in western Kazakhstan in May 2010 and May 2011, claiming the lives of 12,000 and 500 individuals respectively. The causes of the previous mass mortality incidents could not be conclusively identified. Since 2010 a series of veterinary training sessions have built capacity within Kazakhstan, which will no doubt improve the post mortem analysis and documentation of the current mass mortality event. Mass mortality events are not unusual for saiga antelopes, with a case occurring as recently as 2010 with 12,000 dead animals. However, the scale of the current event is unprecedented relative to the total population size. Often these mass mortality events occur in the birth period, when saiga females come

csrcompetitiveness.org

together in vast herds to all give birth within a peak period of less than one week. “Saiga antelopes often have twins and populations are able to rebound quickly. Our hope is that if we can control what is driving these mass mortality events as well as tackle the number one threat to saigas – wildlife crime and poaching – populations will be able to recover. Collaboration among all stakeholders is vital. Kazakhstan is leading the way and I look forward to the Range States putting in place strong policies at the CMS Saiga meeting,” said Chambers. Experts are working around the clock to investigate the impacts in terms of wildlife health of the relatively high rainfall observed this spring, the composition of the vegetation and other potential trigger factors including a suite of viruses. CMS Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Saiga Antelopes. From a captive population of more than 90 animals, only four individuals were left in April, 2015, including just one adult male. A drought in 2014 coupled with supplementary feeding may be connected to the mass mortality. This news came at a time when the wild Precaspian saiga population in southern Russia is under heavy pressure from poaching. Due to the catastrophic loss of saiga and a lack of funding the centre was forced to shut its doors to visitors. All scientific research and community outreach activities had been put on hold. However, new initiative Saiga Conservation Alliance was formed for raising fund for conserving this magnificent migratory species. Captive breeding is an important part of the global conservation strategy for saigas, the Medium-Term International Work Programme 2011-2015 under the CMS MOU.

N

ew Delhi based Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) India, a notfor-profit organization working to make giving more effective and NGOs more successful in India, launched a Media Fellowship Program to encourage writers and journalists highlight development sector stories. The Fellowship shall provide an opportunity for writers to experience the social, economic and cultural life of disadvantaged communities and reflect the status of corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects as perceived by the community and other stakeholders. The Fellowship will support research and writing for the participants who have enrolled in the program. With years of experience in handling philanthropy and community development initiatives for companies, institutions and individuals, CAF India has established itself as pioneers in this field with an aim to ensure greater impact of philanthropic and CSR investments in the society. Tarun Basu, Editor-in-Chief, IANS, said,''This is a welcome step by CAF India. Many stories which are not necessarily breaking news, but are impactful, are usually not given their due. There is a huge gap between the India which is progressing and the other India, which is left to fend for itself. This will encourage the media fraternity to take notice and play an important role.''

Shantanu Sen, a senior broadcast media professional who currently serves as OSD to CEO Prasar Bharti, added,''Private news channels have limitations in their capacity to carry stories on development and social sector, due to the TRP-Ad revenue driven business model. Doordarshan and All India Radio on the other hand, are perfectly positioned as platforms for the dissemination of such narratives. However, the content has to be engaging, innovative and convincing.''

‘We are confident that this innovative program will have a positive impact on the society by focusing on the issues that need immediate attention. The stories by fellows are expected to create an enabling environment in the area of CSR and sensitize stakeholders on various dimensions of CSR activities and intervention in the country. I thank Give 2 Asia for helping us to start this program which is going to offer an exciting opportunity to all the selected journalists/media specialists.

NEWS New Book By Wayne Visser

The book gets to the heart of why the sustainability and CSR movements have failed in the past and offers a new view of how sustainable business practices can shape-shift to make a genuine difference inside and outside organisations.

Sustainable frontiers Unlocking Change Through Business, Leadership and Innovation

Book dispels the myths of sustainability and challenges us to let go of old systems that are failing to deliver economic, social and environmental transformation.

G

lobally acclaimed CSR Guru, Prof. Wayne Visser has authored a book on Sustainable Business titled 'Sustainable frontiers: Unlocking change through business, leadership and Innovation' which looks about Sustainable Frontiers for a sustainable future. The Book is released by GreenLeaf Publishing. The book presents eight keys to unlocking transformational change – through leadership, enterprise, innovation, transparency, engagement, responsibility, integration and futurefitness. Far from being another tame review of corporate social responsibility and sustainable business initiatives. Book dispels the myths of sustainability and challenges us to let go of old systems that are failing to

deliver economic, social and environmental transformation. The book also gets to the heart of why the sustainability and CSR movements have failed in the past and offers a new view of how sustainable business practices can shape-shift to make a genuine difference inside and outside organisations. It gathers together experiences from across the globe and shows to the reader what can be achieved with the right vision and leadership. Expect to be challenged, engaged and inspired to join the revolution on the sustainable frontier. Making a successful transition to a more sustainable future depends on letting go. Sustainable Frontiers shows how we must find ways to let go of an industrial system that has served us

well, but is no longer fit for purpose. How we will need to let go of old styles of leadership and out-dated models of business, high-impact lifestyles and selfish values. How we must learn to let go of cherished ideologies that are causing destruction and beliefs about ways to tackle problems that are failing to resolve crises. If one reaches sustainable frontiers, it must begin with changing our collective minds – and only then will we change our collective behaviour. How we accomplish such a global mind-shift is the subject of Sustainable Frontiers. And it starts by admitting that those of us at the vanguard of the sustainability revolution also have to change. We will also have to let go of cherished beliefs and strategies that are not working – starting with the way we communicate our vital, life-saving mission. Wayne Visser has combined a globally-informed big picture approach to transitioning capitalism toward a thriving future, with hundreds of great examples and stories of the transformations taking place at the edges of our mainstream corporate system. The big question, as always, is how fast can that scale in a race between declining natural carrying capacities and rapidly evolving human, social and intellectual capacities for innovation and breakthrough? Visser's 'Creating Integrated Value' concept is a good starting point for one of the most important conversations on

the planet today. He comprehensively covers the key trends shaping the possibilities emerging for a regenerative economics- for example, net value footprinting, Web 2.0, the role of meaning and purpose, and putting the soul back into work- all form part of his vision of Transformative CSR. New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) neonatology professor Dr Vinod Paul expressed happiness over the achievement and added that he was proud that India had eliminated a disease that was at one point of time responsible for almost 15% of neonatal deaths in the country. “This is truly a huge goal because at one point in time there were tens of thousands of deaths due to maternal and neonatal tetanus,” he said. He cited three reasons why he believed India had achieved the goal. “First and foremost, maternal tetanus immunisation rates have gone up. They are not universal, but they are very high,” he said. “Secondly, we introduced cash incentives for institutional deliveries; and lastly, delivery kits that reduce contamination along with safe umbilical cord practices have been important. In the last seven years, facility births have increased, even in rural India. We have moved from homes where deliveries are unhygienic to facility births where we are dealing with nurses and doctors where there are greater chances of better care and practices,” he added. The elimination of neonatal tetanus is defined as less than one case in 1000 live births in every district across the country, said the WHO. The disease usually occurs in newborns through infection of the unhealed umbilical stump, especially when the stump is cut with a non-sterile instrument. Maternal tetanus is considered eliminated once neonatal tetanus elimination has been achieved. WHO had on March 27, 2014 officially declared India 'Polio Free'.

making process? We conduct needs assessment in the community before the start of financial year. Based on the community needs we formulate CSR programs, and in the implementation, people, community institutions share responsibility and programs are executed to achieve the objectives. We try to ensure that there is a convergence with government schemes. In that way we utilize the development funds to the maximum. You have set up a good Hospital and DAV Public School at Kamalanga. What is the objective for setting up such type of infrastructure in a remote village? Are land loser children getting any benefit from DAV School? We have set up a state-of art Hospital and a DAV Public School at our Township near Kamalanga Village. Besides this, we have set up an Accidental Care Unit at Dhenkanal Government Hospital. Our objective is not only to set up a good power plant, but also to provide better health services and quality education to local community. We are providing fee concession for land loser children and other facilities also. Our aim is to make this school a better one in this region. You have distributed health insurance policy to land losers. What kind of benefit they will get from this? We have distributed health insurance policies to 2,264 members of the local community of Mangalpur Panchayat

Eleven teaching volunteers have been provided to Govt. Primary Schools where student and teacher ratio is low. Two High school, eight primary and U.P school, 16 Anganwadi centres are being supported to provide quality education. You are promoting agriculture based livelihood activities at the project area. Can you elaborate few livelihoods interventions? Yes, through this we want to ensure harmonious co-existence of industry and agriculture. We are providing support including training to the farmers for agriculture activities. People are harvesting well including paddy and groundnuts. This year 60 farmers adopted SRI (System of Rice Intensification) method in paddy cultivation. They received about Rs 2000 extra income per acre of land. Fish farming promoted in individual’s as well as community ponds by which more than 100 fish farmers harvested about Rs 5000-6000

per pond. More than 500 acre of area covered under groundnut through which farmers got about Rs 4000 profit per acre of land. Three tailoring centres benefitted more than 100 girls by means of providing skill building training and marketing support. Some of the trained girls provided with sewing machine, which helps them to earn Rs 2500-300 per month. How would you define CSR as? I believe that CSR should not be used as risk mitigation instrument rather a moral responsibility of corporate houses to solve India’s societal problems and has to be embedded in core values and principles of the company.
