More and more of you have been sending us your email addresses which means we are able to email Leisure Scene to you instead of posting it. The only downside is that you are apparently finding it hard to do the crossword and Sudoku! So we have made some changes to Quiz Scene on the back cover, with a whole host of new games to play. We’ve kept the popular Word Wheel and if you can work out the 9-letter word why not email it to us and we’ll enter you into our competition? For any feedback on Quiz Scene, email me: louisa.richards@cssc.co.uk We’ve got some fabulous stories from our members this issue. My favourite is from Harry Neal, who joined CSSC nearly 70 years ago! Read about his hockey highlights on p.8. We’ve also got some great success stories: our members have been winning medals, they’ve been to the Commonwealth Games – volunteering AND participating as athletes! See p.10-13. If you have a story to tell, or know another member who has, please email me (louisa.richards@cssc.co.uk) so we can share your/their news. Enjoy the read

CSSC BOARD NEWS
Our first few months as Board members We asked our two newest Board members, Liane Farrer and Stuart Fraser, to give a little insight into the journey that brought them onto the Board and tell us about their experiences during their first few months as a Board member.
I became very interested in CSSC after setting up the London Touch Rugby Club in 2010. Hearing about the club, the London Management Board approached me with an offer of affiliation and support. Liane Farrer Thanks to CSSC and some great volunteers, the club has gone from strength to strength, with 150 members, an almost 50:50 male-female membership split, a high recruitment rate of new members to CSSC and with six England caps. My gratitude, and an interest to see how the bigger organisation works and improve it, led me to stand for election to the Board in 2014. I had always believed that CSSC needed to keep ahead of the game. In fact, CSSC already recognises the need to update its ‘offer’ to ensure it fits with what members want in a changing world and that it attracts enough members to be viable in a shrinking public sector. I am thrilled to be able to help CSSC keep on track with its current plans and think about all possibilities and risks to ensure it continues to be hugely popular and successful. Working in communications, I’m especially interested in helping CSSC to connect with its members and beyond. As a member of the Sport and Leisure Committee I can help shape CSSC’s range of activities in the most efficient and appealing way possible, and I’ve already had the chance to do that at our first meeting. Many of the decisions have been made by email and teleconference, which makes being on the Board do-able, even in a busy job like mine in the Government Communications Service. It was good to catch up with the Board face-to-face at our meeting in September and I’m looking forward to getting to know some of the clubs and associations better and maybe sampling some new activities.
Stuart Fraser
I remain passionate about sport and healthy living and I feel that the experience gained during a long career in the Ministry of Defence places me ideally to pass on some of that passion and experience to the benefit of CSSC and its activities. In particular, I believe that I can bring fresh and clear thinking to issues and explain my thinking with conviction. I favour the minimum degree of bureaucracy and dislike waste and excess of any sort. Since my election to the Board I have attended CSSC’s Annual Conference and AGM, where I had the opportunity to meet and talk to lots of CSSC colleagues who helped me greatly to understand the issues they currently face. I have also attended CSSC events in the South West and participated in an excellent CSSC Hill Walking event in the Lake District. I have undertaken a Board induction day at CSSC head office and have been appointed to the Resources Committee and to the Appointments Committee. At the time of writing I am looking forward to attending my first full Board meeting and joining a teleconference discussion of the current CSSC Strategic Plan. I have been struck by the dedication and commitment present in the significant cadre of volunteers, without whom CSSC’s programme of events simply would not succeed. The Board is always looking for new blood to foster fresh thinking. So if you feel that you have a real liking for sport and/or wellbeing, the energy and focus to contribute to the sustained improvement of CSSC and its activities and you have the time to spare, then why not consider submitting your nomination to be a member of the Board?
IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN THE DECISIONS THAT AFFECT WHAT YOU GET OUT OF YOUR CSSC MEMBERSHIP THEN MAYBE YOU’D LIKE TO GET INVOLVED WITH SETTING THE STRATEGIC DIRECTION FOR OUR ORGANISATION AND HELPING TO SHAPE OUR FUTURE BY BECOMING A BOARD MEMBER. WE ARE NOW SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR THE 2015 BOARD ELECTIONS. PERHAPS YOU’VE THOUGHT ABOUT STANDING FOR ELECTION BUT WEREN’T SURE IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE OR IF IT’S FOR YOU. IF THAT’S THE CASE AND YOU WOULD LIKE SOME MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE THE ENCLOSED NOMINATION FORM, VISIT OUR WEBSITE HTTP://WWW.CSSC.CO.UK/BOARDNOMINATION OR CONTACT JENNIFER.FELL@CSSC.CO.UK / 01494 888451.

I have been a CSSC member since 1970. My early involvement was with the Cygnet Rowing Club from 1970 - 73. After that, I spent twelve years or so rowing at international level and coaching at elite club level. Following a very demanding work and family life I now have much more time to devote to other activities.

Board Diversity What’s the business case for diversity in volunteering?
It’s almost a year since Board member Audrey Haskell penned an article encouraging members to stand for election to the Board. Her own volunteer role within CSSC has widened since her appointment as CSSC’s Board Diversity Champion. So what are the business benefits of diversity and what exactly does Audrey’s new role entail? Along with other organisations, CSSC recognises the benefits of promoting diversity and equality, which focus on three key areas:
Creativity and Innovation
A mix of people with different talents, skills and perspectives allows creativity and innovation to develop and will help CSSC to adapt to changes in the challenging environment in which we operate. Diversity is critical if we are to be creative.
Compliance
We need to comply with anti-discrimination legislation and to protect our corporate reputation. These laws are designed to make sure everyone has the same opportunities and set the minimum standards that CSSC must comply with.
Customer Needs
We need our volunteers and staff to understand and meet the needs of an increasingly diverse membership base and partner organisations. Many organisations realise the importance of the role that equality and diversity play in obtaining a competitive advantage, and that the benefits to the business go far beyond legal compliance and social desirability. CSSC is keen to get closer to its members and volunteers, to understand their needs better and provide them with the right products, services and support. A diverse workforce will be better placed to achieve these aims, hence the need for a Board Diversity Champion. Since Audrey’s appointment, an Equality and Diversity Group has been established. Led by Audrey, it includes Tony Tate, fellow Board Member and Assistant Board Champion; Simon Lee, Chief Executive and Laurel Spring, Head of Human Resources.
A network of Regional Diversity Champions (RDCs) has also been set up to spread ownership of the equality and diversity agenda. A key part of promoting equality includes working in partnership with affiliated organisations and groups to clearly communicate the benefits that a diverse group of volunteers can offer CSSC. Speaking recently to Audrey she said, “I can’t believe 15 months have flown past since Simon and I did a presentation at the 2013 national conference about the role of women in CSSC volunteering. Last September, when I was appointed to my Champion role, we also created our Equality & Diversity Group. We all shared similar values and views about the importance of this subject and had a vision that CSSC volunteers should share those same ethics. We devised an ever-evolving action plan to focus our attention on our aim, but one step at a time. Perhaps most important has been the recruitment of our team of volunteer RDCs who met for the first time in September for an induction/training day at head office. They come with a huge range of experience that we want to utilise for the benefit of all of CSSC. They also come from a wide range of backgrounds – both men and women; different racial backgrounds; disability, etc. Some are already experienced CSSC volunteers, for others, it’s their first involvement. Although CSSC is facing many challenges in a tough economic environment, I’m very excited about the future of CSSC and the role that equality and diversity has to play within this organisation. As Stephen Covey states ‘strength lies in differences and not similarities’.”

HOCKEY HISTORY
In May 1943, Harry Neal joined the MOD aircraft carrier design group at Bath from the dockyard at Portsmouth. Two of his colleagues were keen hockey players from Plymouth and played for a Sunday mixed XI, and in August 1943 they persuaded Harry to don the hockey pads when their current lady keeper became pregnant. He was 21 and had no idea what hockey was all about, but he remained between the posts for nearly 20 years!

EUROPEAN TOUCH RUGBY CHAMPIONS! ENGLAND CAME HOME AS THE EUROPEAN TOUCH RUGBY CHAMPIONS THIS SUMMER AFTER COMING TOP IN THE MEDALS TABLE, AND SIX CSSC MEMBERS WERE PART OF THE ENGLAND SQUAD!
The six players, who were spread across five different teams (Women’s Open, Mixed Open, Men’s 30, Women’s 27 and Senior Mixed), were part of a huge team of players making up the 9 teams (all pictured here!) that England brought to the Championships. Our members came home with four gold medals and two silver! Chris Wall won GOLD in the Men’s Over 30s squad, Lois Lau and Crystal Ravenscroft won GOLD in the Women’s Over 27s team, Tracy Andrew won GOLD in the Women’s Open Age category, Melissa Day won SILVER in the Mixed Open Age category and David Cope won SILVER in the Mixed Seniors team. A tremendous result for our CSSC players and for Team England! All six members play for the Tooting and Battersea-based CSSC Touch Rugby Club. CSSC and England player Lois Lau said, “I was thrilled to be representing England and to have so many CSSC players in the squad this year. Considering we are a small, friendly club and many of us have only played touch for a relatively short period of time, to come home with so many medals is a great success for the club.”
On hearing the news of our members’ success, CSSC’s Chief Executive Simon Lee said, “This is wonderful news; many congratulations to the team on your gold and silver medals. You are great ambassadors for your sport and for CSSC.” So what’s next for our Touch Rugby stars? The Touch Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2015, of course! Regional trials have already begun and a few of our members are hoping to make the team. If anyone makes the squad, you’ll be sure to read about it in Leisure Scene! The CSSC Touch Rugby league welcomes new members from complete beginners to more experienced players. For more information visit the London region’s clubs page at: cssc.co.uk

CSSC GLASGOW 2014
The 2014 Commonwealth Games took place participated in the Games: Mick Gault – shooting playing netball for Scotland in her first Games. at the Games as volunteers! Over the next four
CSSC’ s Comm All-time Commonwealth Champion! This year, CSSC member Mick Gault won his 18th Commonwealth Games medal shooting for England, which put him in joint first position for most medals ever won at the Games. This year’s Commonwealth Games were Mick’s sixth in a row, which in total have seen him on the podium receiving nine gold medals, four silver and five bronze! Mick, a 60-year-old Grandfather from Norfolk, came out of retirement for this, his final, Commonwealth Games in a bid to become the most decorated man in Commonwealth Games history. He didn’t quite beat the record, but he matched it. “I wanted to give it a little bash and try to get the all-time record,” he said. ”But unfortunately, it was a case of not enough 10s. I gave it my best shot but my body was telling me it’s time to pack up and call it a day. I’ve got the 18 medals now and that’s exactly what the aim was, so it’s job done! It’s a weight off my shoulders and I can chillax, as they say!” Mick has confirmed that he has now hung up his gun competitively, ruling out another tilt at a 19th medal in Australia in four years, but he wants to stay involved in shooting and hopes to take up a coaching role.

LEISURE this summer in Scotland. Two of our members (that we know of!) for England in his sixth consecutive Games; and Hayley Mulheron – As well as Hayley and Mick, we also had nearly 40 CSSC members pages you can read all about their Commonwealth Games experiences.
monwealth Games HAYLEY’S FIRST GAMES CSSC member Hayley Mulheron, who works at Motherwell Pension Centre, plays netball for Scotland and this summer she participated in her first ever Commonwealth Games! Hayley began playing netball at 11 years old and was soon invited onto the school team. “My P.E. teacher was a huge inspiration which led me to trialling for Glasgow District Netball Squad.” Hayley then represented Glasgow and quickly got scouted for Scotland Under 17’s and has been representing Scotland ever since. She progressed through the age groups (U17’s, U19’s U21’S) to the Open National Team, and has also represented both CSSC and Hassra in the department’s competitions. Training between 18-25 hours a week, as well as working full time, soon paid off when she was selected into the Scotland Netball team as Vice Captain in the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. “In the lead up to the Games we won games against Trinidad and Tobago (three times), Northern Ireland and Wales. We also competed within 13 goals to South Africa (ranked 6th in the world) increasing our ranking to 11th in the world!” After years of dedication, commitment and preparation, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games finally arrived. Hayley and the rest of her netball team joined a further 16 sports to unite as Team Scotland (17 sports 1 team). Hayley’s first game was against St Lucia and they won in front of a sell-out home crowd. “I cannot even begin to describe my thoughts or feelings but it was amazing and I was honoured to represent my country in my first ever Commonwealth Games. I felt right at home playing the game I love and the atmosphere was “pure dead brilliant!” Hayley and her team went on to play New Zealand, Jamaica and Malawi, who are all ranked in the top 5 teams in the world, and unfortunately they lost these games. Their final game in the group stages was against Northern Ireland. “This was a close game where both teams had taken the lead at times. However, much to my frustration and total disappointment, we lost. I was so gutted I cried, especially when we had beaten the same team in the World Cup Qualifiers in June 2014. However, our final game for placement in the Games was the next day so there was no time to huff and puff. We had to learn from the Northern Ireland game quickly and focus on our opposition against Trinidad and Tobago. We won the final game, finishing 9th place overall. “I enjoyed being part of a multisport environment, cheering on other Team Scotland athletes/sports. We supported each other through the rollercoaster ride of the highs, the lows and sometimes the disappointments. The highlights for me were competing at my first ever Commonwealth Games; the opening and closing ceremonies; making new friends (worldwide); being part of Team Scotland; and finally, watching Ussain Bolt and his team win gold in the 4x100m relay team! My life as a full time athlete and Commonwealth Games experience in Glasgow 2014 has ended and now my life resumes to normality. I shall look back on this experience with pride.”

CSSC GLASGOW 2014
TEAM CSSC at the Com DUNCAN TALBOT “It was fascinating seeing the athletes training at close quarters! Here I am pictured with Mark Dry, Scotland’s Bronze medalist in the hammer throw.”
JILLIAN MALKIN “I was helping the Triathlon team, based at the beautiful Strathclyde Country Park. I am pictured here taking a selfie with Emma Jackson! (Triathlon for Team Australia). I hope the Games have inspired people to take up sport or try something new, and spurred people on to support or volunteer at events in their local communities.”
GRAIG MITCHELL “I was a driver and met some really interesting people on my travels. When the message came over the radio: “All cars, all cars this is Control. All Fleet Operations have now ceased”, I felt an enormous sense of satisfaction, however there was a great deal of sadness that I’d been part of something really special and now it was at an end.”
SANDRA ARMSTRONG “I had such a fantastic time. I was with Spectator Services welcoming everyone to the Games, pointing them in the right direction, scanning tickets and answering questions. The atmosphere was like one great big fun-filled holiday. Shifts were long but the BUZZ got you through, and the friendships made will last forever.”
LAURA EDWARDS “I was stationed at the Royal Commonwealth Pool for the diving. The atmosphere was electric, especially when Tom Daley was diving. One of my highlights was meeting diver Leon Taylor (pictured)! Volunteering is so rewarding: meeting new people, making lifelong friends, learning new skills and reinforcing others, making people smile and, the best part, knowing I made a difference. I’ve got the volunteering bug – next stop Rio!”
FRANCIS SMITH “My time as a Field of Play team leader at the athletics was fantastic. I was based on the warm-up track so was right in the thick of things, meeting so many nice people from all different countries. I am so glad I could put something back into the sport I have loved and competed in for 18 years. Meeting the fastest man in the world was fantastic (pictured!) but seeing my friend Eilidh Child (hurdles for Scotland and won a silver medal) after her race was a special moment.”
BILL BRASH “I was selected as a swimming technical official. The atmosphere was incredible, especially when Hannah Miley and Ross Murdoch picked up gold medals – I got goose bumps as ‘Flower of Scotland’ echoed round the pool at their medal ceremonies. It was the one of the highlights of my life. This is me with English swimmer and gold medallist, Liam Tancock.”
ALAN DURHAM SARA LEE “I was on the medical team. My favourite moment was when Geraint Thomas won the men’s road race, despite getting a puncture; such a proud moment. Another favourite memory was watching Usain Bolt dancing on the track before his race, having a laugh with the volunteers.”
12
“At the ripe old age of 72, I was delighted to be selected. It was wonderful being part of such a spectacle; there was a tremendous camaraderie between athletes, volunteers and general public. Sport transcends all barriers and although there were early starts and late nights, I would not have missed it for the world.”

mmonwealth Games LUCINDA CRANHAM “I was based at Scotstoun Sports Campus which was the venue for table tennis and squash. It was a great experience, totally different from the Olympics but just as rewarding.”
MICHAEL O’ HARA “I was a T2 driver, taking accredited VIPs and guests from venue to venue. My games experience was complete on my second to last shift when my clients were none other than Sir Chris Hoy and his wife. He is such a gentleman and we had a really good chat regarding Glasgow 2014 and volunteering in general. It was an honour and pleasure to be part of a legacy that will live on.”
CLAIRE THOMAS “It was a privilege to be around some of the best athletes in the world who were used to large events, but also to be able to help some of the athletes who had travelled from more remote locations in the Pacific and had never experienced anything like this before. The Games lived up to its name as the ‘Friendly Games’.”
NIGEL KNAPTON “My experience volunteering in the Venue Communications Centre at the Velodrome was fantastic. I made some great friends and saw some fantastic sport. It was greatly appreciated to have the support from CSSC.
ANDREW PAGE “Scotland embraced these Games and the atmosphere reflected that. Even on the final day, as the cycling road race reached its dramatic finale on the rain-soaked street, thousands of people were roaring on Wales’ Geraint Thomas to his first Commonwealth gold, proud simply to be there and to share this moment with him. That summed up the spirit of these Games.”
JULIE BENTLEY “My highest moment was being inside the venue at Celtic Park when the Queen arrived; the atmosphere inside the stadium was immense. I will never forget the friends I made, not only the family who kindly put me up, but also fellow Clydesiders, young and old, mostly from Scotland, who have also been inspired to continue volunteering. Thank you to the volunteer pot of Scotland and CSSC.”
ANDREW JONES “I was based at the idyllic setting of Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre. Working various shift patterns gave me the opportunity to meet and speak with players from all over the world, watch the different standards and pick up some tips for my own game… and I have since won the HASSRA Crown Green Singles Championship! I have too many stories to mention, but I had such a fabulous experience that I have registered for Gold Coast in 2018!”
SALLY BLACKFORD “I was assigned to the Uniform and Accreditation Centre based in the Kelvin Hall. With the support of my HMRC managers and colleagues, I started weekly shifts in April 2014 helping to fit and distribute 17,000 uniforms to fellow volunteers and technical officials. It was a very busy and physically demanding job, but I enjoyed it immensely. The highlight was when the Queen and Prince Philip visited in July.”
JILL TIVEY “I was based at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Emirates Arena. I volunteered because I wanted to give something back to sport and to be part of an amazing event. It was ‘pure dead brilliant’ and I would recommend it to anyone!”

Some of our offers are so good, people join CSSC just to make the most of one of them – like our cheap cinema ticket scheme; or our supermarket scheme that gets you up to 5% off your shopping. Usually, however, there are several reasons why members become members, and that is the joy of CSSC membership – there are so many benefits to be enjoyed sometimes it might be hard to know where to start!
SPORTY?
If you want to participate in sport – for fun or competitively – your CSSC membership will gain you entry into countless CSSC sporting events all over the country – locally, regionally and nationally. And if you want to take part in a non-CSSC organised event we have a subsidy scheme in place to help pay the entry fees for certain sports, namely running, cycling, triathlon, open-swimming and chipped wheelchair events. (NB: You must register before the event). We also have another subsidy scheme to help pay the costs for those members who might want to become a coach, referee, umpire or other sports official. Full details of our subsidy schemes and T&Cs can be found at cssc.co.uk – click on ‘Subsidy Scheme 2014’

CSSC WELCOMES DAISY! CSSC is pleased to announce the appointment of Daisy Clarke as its new Sports Development Executive. Daisy joined CSSC at the beginning of May and will be reviewing the current provision of sport at CSSC, consulting affiliate bodies, external sports organisations and recommending how CSSC can develop the sport and recreational opportunities on offer to its members. “I am thrilled to be joining CSSC; there are many exciting opportunities and huge potential for sport and recreation
to grow here at CSSC and I’m looking forward to playing my part in making sure we put on the best possible sport and recreation provision to members.” Daisy is currently getting in touch with Area Association volunteers up and down the country to hear their thoughts and opinions on what works well and what future improvements could be made. CSSC Taste Available for all members and regions, our Taster Days offer some fantastic opportunities for you to try something you would never normally experience! The days are aimed at beginners to give you the chance to try something completely new at greatly subsidised prices.
“I just wanted to say thank you so much for organising the Butlins day yesterday. It was a fantastic day for all of us. My husband has not smiled much this summer as he broke his leg in early May and has been in pain for much of it. To see his smiling face when he was on the funfair ride with our daughter made the whole thing worthwhile.” Angela Dawes
“My mother ‘Kate’ Burdett has enjoyed thirty odd years of sailing, including trips out with the CSSA, and was keen to introduce me to the art of navigating a yacht effectively. I enjoyed a brilliant Off Shore Sailing taster day with our skipper Colin Smith and other experienced and novice sailors, when we ventured from the Hamble to Cowes and back. We all successfully managed to stay on-board, and realised what a constant challenge it is to deal with the elements in front of us. The weather was perfect (not too hot) and the conditions produced plenty of winds and tidal currents; we were even racing along at up to 8 knots at times. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone, as I definitely felt invigorated after a day out on the channel.” Adrian Burdett
“I had a fabulous time White Water Rafting, thank you. It was so well organised. What a great day out. Would love to come again and bring more friends and family.” Sally Vowles

ALL OF THE TASTER DAYS WILL BE ADVERTISED ON THE

er Day Programme The 2015 programme will include things like sailing, archery, clay pigeon shooting, white water rafting and much more. If you’re not sure what to expect, you just have to read some of the feedback we have had from members already taking part in our taster day programme:
“I was completely taken aback by the sheer size of the Velodrome building and, wow, wasn’t that banking steep! Initial greetings were followed by refreshments: water and bananas - this was serious stuff! After a short safety briefing, including an explanation of the difference between these bikes and the ones at home (what do you mean, no brakes?!), we were clipped in and started our first lap of the track – on the flat section. The next lap started on the flat then moved onto the start of the camber and slowly we rose up the track little by little. As confidence rose we could overtake and eventually we were riding the top banking after accelerating into the bends to maintain speed. After a few practise laps, we were ready for some competitive action! The ‘flying lap’ competition: one by one we cycled three laps and were timed on our last lap. My joy of finishing in what I thought was a good time was short lived as my son soundly trashed me! As everyone took their turn, there were shouts of encouragement from all the participants. What an unbelievable experience! Thanks to Jade and Andy for setting this up.” Dave and Jamie Boor

“My mother and I had a great time at the Clay Pigeon Shooting. It was the best morning’s entertainment I have had in a very long time, especially as I am disabled and have a wheelchair, and my mother is 74. We were looked after and had a very good tutor throughout the experience. Look forward to doing it again soon.” Chris Hadfield
DAYS OUT!
The East Coast Yacht Division of the Civil Service Sailing Association manages Freyja, our beautiful 3 cabin, six berth 38’ Najad 380 normally sailing with a crew of 5 or 6.
