THEGAFFER Two years on, we are in better shape - Gibson Good afternoon and welcome to Home Park for today’s William Hill Scottish Cup First Round match. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors, Wick Academy, who have made the long journey South for this cup tie. It is quite ironic that we have been paired together again after meeting at Harmsworth Park back in 2011. It is an absolute pleasure to host Barry Wilson and his team today and it is high profile games like this one that are what make all the hard work worthwhile at this level of football. I have no doubt that Wick will be as stern a test as we will face this season, but we are in better shape this time around and my players signed up to play against sides of this quality in games like today’s, so we aim to give it our best shot and make it as difficult as possible for them on our tight park. Results of late have not been great, but it has been the Coldstream Manager Andrew Gibson. performances that have been the most disappointing thing. Missing last week’s match due to work commitments made things even more frustrating for Me, but I am back today and hoping for a vast improvement in all areas. We have had very good numbers at training this week to work on things and it is my job to get the lads heads up and build confidence once again, something that was perhaps taken for granted during last year’s promotion season.

We strengthened the squad last week, with former player Robin Brown signing after four years away in America doing a football scholarship. He is still finding his fitness, but his left foot will eventually give us balance, something we have been lacking for some time now. He was a fantastic Premier Division player for us before he left and I am confident we can get the best out of him once again. We go into today’s game without Gary Wales (holiday) and Lee Lambert (work). Best of luck to all the East of Scotland clubs in Scottish Cup action today, it would be great to see a few of them in the hat for the Second Round draw come 4.45pm this afternoon.

Civil stroll to victory Two soft second half goals settled this East of Scotland Premier Division clash in favour of the Strollers, leaving the Streamers winless in four matches going into Scottish Cup week. With Manager Andrew Gibson absent, his Assistant Stevie Roughead took the side, which was missing Jonny Simpson, Gary Wales, Craig Heugh and Tomie Cannon. In conditions far from ideal for a goalkeeper, the home side rarely troubled Civil's and it was Coldstream's Mark Walters who was the busier of the two throughout. The fact the score line was kept as low as two was mainly down to the giant stopper, who repeatedly bailed his side out of trouble when a goal looked a certainty. It wasn't long before the yellow clad keeper was forced into action, tipping a volley destined for the top corner wide. Another was then palmed to safety as Civil turned up the pressure on the Streamers defence.

At the other end chances were few and far between and the home side's inability to create grew frustrating to watch. Skipper John Crawford went close with a header from a Lawrie Cannon centre and Sean Simpson saw a free kick go inches over, but other than that there was a distinct lack of chances allowing the visitors every opportunity to grab one at some point in the proceedings. They almost opened their account five minutes before the interval when a cross fell to their forward, who lashed one towards goal, but Walters again showed why he is considered to be one of the best keepers in the division and somehow got his hand to it to keep the encounter a stalemate at the break. With the Home Park side now with the wind, the early signs were that they would take the game to the Strollers. Aaron Punton was unlucky not to convert a header from Greg McCrudden's corner before Cannon's jinky run almost ended in glory, his rasping shot drifting inches wide. The Edinburgh side then took hold of the midfield and after two fantastic opportunities went begging, they made no mistake with the third, a cutback fired home despite Walters's best efforts almost keeping it out. With the Coldstream heads now down, matters were made even worse ten minutes later when an almost identical move, again down the right, resulted in a second. Punton was sent into midfield for the latter part of the game and this made a huge difference with his directness shining through, but unfortunately it was a case of too little, too late and with high flying Wick Academy in town next weekend in the William Hill Scottish Cup First Round this was not the ideal preparation and things will need to improve. TODAYSOPPONENTS Wick Academy FC was founded in October 1893, taking its name from the cricket club which had been in existence for about 20 years. The club was known in Wick simply as Academy and sometimes in other parts of Caithness as Pulteneytown Academy. An indirect and unofficial connection with the local school of the same name was maintained with the election of a teacher, John Davidson as the first captain or ‘leader’ as it was termed in the minute book of the first meeting. The club’s first game was a friendly at home to Castletown. Home games were played at Harrow Park, now known of course as Harmsworth Park. Ten matches, with only two defeats, were played in that first season against local teams . The Wick League was started in 1896 and Academy won the championship in the third season 1898/9, the first of 17 league titles. From 1907 to 1914 Academy had virtually a clean sweep of the league and local cups and in 1911 applied successfully for full membership of the SFA so as to play in the Qualifying Cup. Academy’s Qualifying Cup debut was a home tie on September 2, 1911 and a crowd of about 800 saw a 4-0 win against Inverness Thistle. Men paid 6d, boys 3d, ladies were admitted free and gate receipts were £17. Caledonian won a 2nd Round tie in Wick 4-1. Right winger in those games was Jimmy Miller who was later secretary and President, his commitment to the club continuing almost 50 years to 1954. A Caithness County League was started in 1926/7 by which time the Harmsworth family had bought the park and gifted it to the town with the Burgh Council as trustees and local sports clubs forming a management committee. Only the football clubs seemed prepared to do the work of the ground improvements and building a stone wall to enclose the park. Changing rooms were built and were saved from demolition in 1973 when Academy agreed to keep them in a good state of repair. Academy won the county league in 1927/8 and again in 28/9, 30/1, 35/6 and 37/8. As the only SFA club in Caithness (Thurso Pentland were also members for 3 years from 1936), Academy was allowed to sign players of other clubs to play in Qualifying Cup games. From 1928 onwards they were unbeaten at home in Qualifying Cup ties. In 1933 they beat Nairn, Caley and Keith, all away, to reach the Scottish Cup proper losing 3-0 to a strong Scottish League Division Two side, St Bernards on January 20, 1934 at the Gymnasium Ground in Edinburgh. In 1936 Academy drew 3-3 in Wick with local rivals Brora Rangers, won the replay and two more games at Forres and Buckie to earn a tie at Stirling. Academy scored first against King’s Park but lost 6-1. Several prestigious friendlies were played and Celtic and Aberdeen were among the teams who appeared at Harmsworth Park in the 30s. Academy had also joined the North of Scotland FA in 1914 but had been unable to play their first tie away to Forres Mechanics as most of their players had been called up by the Territorials. They had to wait until 1954 to be readmitted, but made up for lost time with a 4-3 win at Brora before losing 3-1 in the semi final away to Caley. In 1960 the Caithness Amateur Football Association switched to summer football and to retain its SFA membership Wick Academy had to stay with the normal winter season playing only cup ties and friendlies for the next 12 years. In 1972 with Clair Harper now as chairman, the club joined the North of Scotland 2 nd XI Association to have regular league fixtures, drawing 2-2 at home to Dingwall Thistle in the first game. Academy were a strong team in this North Reserve League, later to become the North Caledonian League and were champions four seasons

TODAYSOPPONENTS running from 78/9 to 81/2 under manager John MacDonald and also won several of the league cups. With former goalkeeper Pat Miller as manager Academy won the league again in 1986/7. In July 1984 Heart of Midlothian fielded a full strength first team in a friendly which attracted 2,400 fans to Harmsworth Park. 900 copies of a souvenir programme sold out five minutes before kick off. Richard Hughes scored for Academy in a 6-1 defeat. After having several applications knocked back Academy were at last voted into the Highland League in 1994 when Caledonian and Inverness Thistle amalgamated and left to join the SFL along with Ross County. The first game at home to Cove Rangers drew a crowd of 1,700 but ended with a 3-0 defeat. After a draw with Rothes, Academy beat League leaders Forres 1-0 and after three straight wins in October were briefly 4th in the table.

In 2001/2 Qualifying Cup wins over Lossiemouth and Nairn County saw Academy in the Scottish Cup proper and BBC TV cameras were at Harmsworth Park where Threave Rovers won 3-2. Midfielder Martin Gunn represented Scotland in the Four Nations semi-professional tournaments in May 2005 and May 2006. After finishing usually between 10th and 13th, Academy completed a run of ten successive league wins in 2008/9 to finish 5th. Co-managers Ian Munro and Richard Hughes received the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Manager of the Year Award with Richard Macadie voted Player of the Year.

In 2009/10 wins over Clachnacuddin and Girvan put the team in the third round of the Scottish Cup for the first time, earning a home tie with Brechin City. Close on 2,000 fans saw Academy take a 4-2 lead only for the SFL side to snatch two late goals and then win the replay at Glebe Park. After defeats in 13 previous semi finals season 2010/11 saw the Scorries reach a first ever North Cup Final and around a thousand fans supported the team against Forres Mechanics at Brora. Academy fought back from a 3-0 half time deficit but time ran out with Forres hanging on for a 3-2 win. 14th place in the SHFL was a disappointment. Davie Kirkwood, former Raith Rovers and Rangers player and Rangers and Ross County Youth coach was appointed manger for season 2011/12 and the team finished 8th in the SHFL. As the second highest placed SFA Licensed club Academy were invited to play in the Ramsdens SFL Challenge Cup losing 4-2 at home to Raith Rovers on 28 July 2012. The 2012 Scottish Cup campaign started with a great 2-0 win away to Spartans but less than a week later the club and town was rocked with the news that Kirkwood wanted to leave to become manager of local rivals Brora Rangers. With Hughes as interim boss Academy reached the North Cup Final but lost 2-1 after extra time to Nairn at Grant Street Park, Inverness to the disappointment of 1,400 Wick fans in the 1,900 crowd. Barry Wilson was appointed manager in November 2012 and the former Ross County, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Livingston striker led the team to a third place SHFL finish. Academy started this season as they had finished the last, opening their SHFL campaign with five straight wins, including a record 9-0 away win at Strathspey Thistle. North Cup wins against Golspie and Clachnacuddin set up a semi final trip to Brora but the Scorries were stunned by a 6-2 defeat. Last Saturday a crowd of close on 500 witnessed a hard fought game at home to champions Cove Rangers which ended 1-1. Wick took the lead when midfielder James Pickles netted a screamer from 30 yards after 71 minutes but ex Ranger Barrie Stephen equalised for Cove with five minutes left. MEMORYMATCH Wick Academy 2 - 4 Coldstream Scottish Cup 1st Round – 11.9.1954 by Ken Wood The SFA introduced a new nationwide format in 1954 and the draw was conducted in the formal surroundings of the committee room at the SFA offices in Park Gardens, Glasgow but the hushed atmosphere after Wick Academy’s name was drawn was interrupted by a murmur of surprise when Coldstream was next out and would have to make the journey to Harmsworth Park. The Borders club would have been better known than Academy at that time as they had won two Qualifying Cup games the previous season before losing 10-1 to Raith Rovers at their own Home Park.

The Berwickshire players left their farms or downed their tools at midday on Thursday September 9 th for the long bus journey north. A couple of the farmers in the team including goalkeeper J Sanderson were too busy to travel and missed the trip. The roads would all have been like the present A99 and the journey would have taken them about three hours up to Edinburgh then on over the Kincardine Bridge and up through Perth. During the night they would have driven up the old A9 through every town and village, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Blair Atholl, Newtonmore………Inverness, Beauly, Muir of Ord, Dingwall, Evanton….perhaps over the Struie……and eventually the party arrived in Wick on Friday morning. The Coldstream players trained on Friday afternoon and presumably slept soundly that night at Mackays Hotel. Ironically Academy encountered more travelling problems than the visitors. The car bringing two Thurso based players, Jimmy Macdonald and Christie Mackay, broke down and Academy kicked off with only nine players until Tommy Reid and Ian Macdonald came on with seven minutes played. Coldstream looked good in the early stages with 19 year old former schoolboy international Billy Clazie creating a few chances and Academy captain Bobby Munro was soon in action confidently saving a shot from George McElraith. Academy attacked on the left and latching on to a return pass from MacDonald, Robbie Shearer fired the ball towards the top corner of the net. Stand in keeper George Rutherford produced the first of many fine saves. Wick took the lead in the 27 th minute when Rutherford could only fist away a Bill Mackay header and Ronnie Sutherland fired in the rebound left footed well out of Rutherford’s reach. Within a minute McElraith headed in the Coldstream equaliser. Thanks to keeper Rutherford it was still 1-1 at half-time. Bill Mackay made it 2-1 for Academy three minutes into the second half when he raced into the box to head in a Shearer cross. Although McElraith again levelled the scores after 55 minutes Academy continued to play well but the Coldstream centre forward completed his hat-trick and put the visitors ahead for the first time. The Borderers survived sustained Academy pressure and broke away again for McElraith to net his and the team’s fourth goal. The Groat correspondent commented: “On the play Wick should have won. But it was Coldstream who carried the day and all credit to them. BARRYWILSON Wick Academy Manager Barry Wilson began his career in the Highland League at Ross County, where his father, Bobby Wilson, was manager. After a spell at Southampton, where he failed to break into the first team, he returned to Ross County before moving to Raith Rovers in 1994. He was a member of the Raith squad that played in the UEFA Cup in 1994–95. In July 1996 Wilson signed for Inverness Caledonian Thistle and helped them to the Scottish Third Division title in 1996–97. In the following few seasons Wilson established himself as a firm favourite of the Caley Thistle fans, with his extraordinarily quick runs down the right wing and his ability to both create and score goals. During season 1999–00, Caley Thistle's then-manager Steve Paterson decided to move Wilson up front as a striker, which proved an extremely successful tactic, with Wilson scoring a number of goals that season. In the summer of 2000, Wilson was sold to Livingston, with whom he won the Scottish First Division title and was promoted to the SPL. After three years at Livingston, Wilson returned to Caley Thistle in August 2003, under the management of John Robertson. Since then he has once again proved a valuable asset to the team.

Wilson holds Scottish First Division winner's medals, won with Caley Thistle, Livingston and Raith Rovers, a Scottish Third Division winner's medal, won with Caley Thistle and a Challenge Cup winner's medal, also won with Caley Thistle. His most historic achievement was in scoring the last senior Scottish goal of the old millennium (against Clydebank, 27 December 1999) and the first of the new millennium (against Livingston, 3 January 2000). He is also famous for scoring the opening goal when Caley Thistle beat Celtic 3–1 at Parkhead in the Scottish Cup on 8 February 2000. Wilson joined St. Johnstone on a one-month emergency loan in March 2008. He returned to Caley Thistle after his loan spell with St Johnstone to win himself a new contract and went on to produce some outstanding performances in the closing games. This resulted in Craig Brewster awarding Wilson with a new 6-month contract. In December 2008, it was announced that Caley Thistle would not be offering Wilson a new contract and thus he would be free to move on when his current contract expired. Wilson joined Dumfries club Queen of the South on 30 December 2008, after being released a month early from his Inverness contract. He made his debut on 3 January 2009 in a Scottish Football League First Division match away to Morton. On 8 December 2009 the Queens website announced Wilson would be leaving in the January transfer window to return to Inverness where his home is. Manager Gordon Chisholm said of Wilson, "He's netted a lot of valuable goals for us and his experience has been a great asset". He had a short spell at Peterhead before joining Elgin City prior to the 2010–11 season in a player-coach role. Wilson was announced as the new manager of Highland League side Wick Academy on 23 October 2012 taking over from former Raith teammate Davie Kirkwood. His first game in charge came against Keith and he saw his team run out 5–1 winners, sending them top of the Highland League. Wilson pulled on his boots again on 27 February 2013 appearing as a substitute during Wick's 4–0 demolition of title rivals Clachnacuddin to bring them back to the top of the Highland League. It was announced on 2 March 2013 that Wilson had signed a new contract at Academy which will see him through to 2015. Queen of the South offered Wilson their vacant managers position in June 2013, but after discussions Wilson turned down their offer to stay at Wick. COLDSTREAMHISTORY Formed almost 118 years ago, Coldstream Football Club is one of the oldest football clubs in Scotland, creating a prestigious history of which it can be proud. It was in 1895 that the ‘Streamers’ were formed and since then the club has always strived to improve, both on and off the pitch, in order to remain as one of the top sides in the Borders and East of Scotland setup. The main trophies lifted by the men in blue over the years have been those of the Scottish Amateur Cup (1924), the Borders Cup (1925), the Kings Cup (1967) and the Scottish Qualifying Cup (1947 & 1966). It is through the latter that the club have the privilege of playing in Scotland’s premier cup competition each season – the Scottish Cup. Coldstream are drawn out in the preliminary rounds each August hoping for a run or famous scalp – which, over the years has provided endless stories and memories for locals, many of which can still be heard to this day should you venture into any of the town’s pubs. Over the years many players produced by Coldstream have moved on to grace the professional game – Lennie Melrose signed for Heart of Midlothian in 1910 with Bobby Johnston and Frankie Bryson doing the same in the early 1930’s. Tommy Ledgerwood left for Partick Thistle in 1946 with Hick Ledgerwood (York City), Jocky Ford (Tottenham Hotspur) and Billy Clazie (Berwick Rangers) also moving up in the game. Eric Tait, who went on to captain Berwick Rangers when they were in the Scottish First Division almost twenty five years ago is another who had talent and was snapped up by a bigger club. Locals Willie Scott, Willie Rutherford, Billy Kerse, George Walker, John Scott and Bob Mackenzie have all had long associations with the club over the years and have helped to take it forward. The opening of the current pavilion in 1991 was also down to a man who oozed passion for Coldstream Football Club, the late Jim Patterson. His photo is there for all to see as you enter the ‘Pivvy’ at Home Park. The historic opening saw Ossie Ardilles, the then Newcastle United manager, bring a strong side up to Coldstream – unfortunately the game ended in a 0 – 1 victory for the magpies. In more recent times, the Streamers have spent time in both of the East of Scotland divisions and following a superb 2012/13 season, they now find themselves back in the top flight after being promoted behind Champions Craigroyston under the guidance of Manager and former player Andrew Gibson, who has helped turn fortunes around in just two seasons, helping to get the club back on track.
