New Beginnings: The Stokes Family Face Deafness with the Help of CPE As a child, Wyvitra Stokes (pronounced Vitra) found out she was deaf in her right ear: “The first memory that I have of losing my hearing I was actually a little kid. I answered the phone and I put the phone to my right ear and I was like, “I can’t hear what they’re saying!’”
Like most children, she was resilient and coped beautifully. “I was perfectly fine, I had about 90 percent hearing in my left ear at the time so it posed no issues,” said Wyvitra. But 10 years ago during her third pregnancy with her son Bryson, Wyvitra started having issues with hearing in her left ear. “I noticed during my pregnancy I had to get people to repeat themselves over and over again. I went to the audiologist and they diagnosed me with a second hearing loss due to otosclerosis in my left ear. From there, it was like lightening striking twice.”
Wyvitra was outfitted with new hearing aids. However, the Stokes decided as a family to take American Sign Language (ASL), so that no matter what happened, they could always communicate with one another. As their quest for the right ASL course began, Travis and Wyvitra, Atlanta natives, thought that they would have to go back to Atlanta to find a course. But as fate would have it, they received a Continuing and Professional Education catalog in the mail.
Otosclerosis is a hardening of the inner ear bone, a condition Wyvitra also shares with her grandmother. Typically this condition is easily operable, but doctors did not want to take the risk of surgery due to the preexisting hearing loss in her right ear.
“We got a [catalog] because our son Bryson has used Continuing & Professional Education since we moved here for Activ8 camps which we love during the summer,” said Mr. Travis Stokes, the father of the family. “Once we saw it in the [catalog], it was just an easy decision to say okay, we’re going to take it the next time it comes up and we took it and we love it.”
With the new reality of Wyvitra’s total deafness facing The Stokes, they did what any determined family does in extreme circumstances: find the right resources.
Travis further explained why taking the ASL course at Continuing and Professional Education was the best choice for his family: “Our [teacher] is so patient and is really good about teaching
us the right way to sign ASL and exactly how to sign correctly.” Since they moved to Columbus years ago, their ties to CSU have grown. “CSU has grown since we’ve moved here and we hear nothing but good things about it. Our son has used Activ8 during the summer at CSU. We love the campus. We’ve met a lot of great people who work there and also attend there. So it was easy for us to decide to use CSU as a place to go learn ASL. And once we got there, we were even [happier] that we got a teacher that is so patient with us, teaching us the foundation of ASL and how to communicate with the deaf community,” recalled Travis. CSU Continuing & Professional Education is a trusted and valuable resource for the entire Stokes family. “There are so many opportunities with the [CPE] courses at Columbus State,” explained Wyvitra. “You can find anything from dancing, healthcare; I just finished a life support course. Our older son did SAT prep. So we use CSU quite a bit. I would definitely say do your research but remember that you have a good source right here in Columbus.”

In the event of class cancellation or changes of times and dates, we will attempt to notify you at least two business days before the course begins. If you cannot attend the course due to these changes, you will receive a CPE credit voucher, which is valid for 18 months from the date of issue.
FEES Course fees are stated at the end of each course description; payment is due at the time of registration. Laws exempting senior citizens from college tuition costs do not apply to these self-supported courses. We will make every effort to reschedule such classes. In the event of inclement weather, tune into your local radio or television station for information about closings.
PAYMENT PLAN POLICY Continuing & Professional Education offers payment plans for select Professional Development courses. Eligible courses are taught in-house with a tuition fee of $300 or more. Online courses or courses offered via third-party educational partners do not qualify for this payment plan option. However, some of these programs may be eligible for financial assistance offered through the educational partner.
PERMANENT RECORDS The Continuing & Professional Education Unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized measurement of noncredit course work. One CEU (1.0) may be awarded for each ten hours of participation in an approved program. We keep a permanent record of participation in selected programs, issue a certificate to acknowledge successful completion of the program, and provide official transcripts to you or your employer. All requests for transcripts must be in writing.
The Continuing & Professional Education payment plan offers the option of paying tuition in three installments. 50% of the tuition is due at the time of registration. The remaining 50% is divided into two equal installments: the first is due on or before the first day of class; the last installment is due by the mid-point of the class. In order to utilize the Continuing & Professional Education payment plan option, you must register for the desired course(s) in person and complete a Payment Plan Agreement. For more information or to inquire about the eligibility of specific classes, please call 706.507.8070.
FUNDING OPTIONS The Department of Veterans Affairs approves many of our certificate courses for VA education benefits. For information or to inquire about a specific course, call 706.507.8070. Military spouses may also use MyCAA funds for certain courses. For more information regarding MyCAA, go online to https://aiportal.acc.af.mil/mycaa/ or call 800.342.9647.
REFUND POLICY As Continuing & Professional Education (CPE) is a self-supporting branch of Columbus State University, we rely on student registration fees to cover all costs. If you must withdraw from a class, please notify us by 5:00 PM at least three business days before the course begins. A full refund minus a $20 processing fee will be issued. You may also choose to accept a CPE credit voucher for the full course amount, in lieu of a refund, and processing fee will be waived. If you withdraw after the 3-day period, but before the class begins, you will receive a 50% refund or credit voucher. No refunds can be given after a class begins.
