Classes
See Class Schedule and Tuition tables for days, times and fee information. New students ages 8 and older with some ballet experience will be evaluated prior to being assigned to a level.
Creative Movement (Ages 5-6) Our program emphasizes the eight elements of movement: centering, gravity, balance, posture, gesture, rhythm, moving in space and breathing. These elements are not only the foundation of dance but also necessary skills as children develop physically and emotionally in order to get ready for more formal and structured instruction. Students take one class per week. Pre-Ballet (Ages 6-7) This class will lead to a deeper study of ballet technique. Ballet etiquette is part of the curriculum, and children will be introduced to steps using proper ballet terminology. At this level, individual expression of feelings, music interpretation, spontaneity, storytelling and team work are taught. Students take one class per week. Level 1 (Ages 7-8) Students are introduced to a more in-depth study of ballet technique and will continue to learn new skills using proper ballet terminology as well as individual expression, music interpretation, spontaneity, storytelling and team work. Students take one class per week.
Level 2 (Ages 8-9) With two hours (2 classes) of training per week, more details and in-depth understanding of classical ballet technique is taught. Strength and mastery of some of the most important skills are emphasized and expected.
Intermediate/Advanced Modern This is a more advanced class for ages 13 and older or levels 5 and 6. This class focuses on the serious expression of inner emotions using a free-flowing, interpretative style rather than following the rigid rules characteristic of many dance disciplines. Advanced ballet technique training is required.
Level 3 (Ages 9-10) At this level the training is more rigorous and demanding. A minimum of 3 hours (2 classes) and maximum of 6 hours (4 classes) per week of training is required. New steps and more challenging combinations are introduced. Strength and mastery of all skills are expected at this level.
Adult Ballet (Ages 18 and up) These classes are generally structured the same as classes for younger dancers. Your class will begin at the barre for warming up, then progress to the center for bigger movements. Aim to strengthen, tone your body and, most of all, to have fun. Taking part in an adult ballet class is good for your body as well as your mind.
Level 4 (Ages 10 and up; Pre-Pointe) This is an intense program designed for more serious students. With a minimum of 6 hours (4 classes) of required training per week, students will begin to focus on and prepare for pointe training. Students may be invited to participate in selected community outreach activities through the year. New students must be evaluated prior to placement. Level 5 (Beginning Pointe) This program is designed for students who enjoy the challenge of more advanced training or would like to pursue a professional career in dance. With up to 7.5 hours (5 classes) per week of training en pointe and technique classes, dancers may be invited to join the Columbus Ballet Company. Students may be involved in community outreach activities. New students must be evaluated prior to placement. Level 6 (Advanced) This is for the most advanced dancers who have experience dancing en pointe. With up to 7.5 hours of training on pointe and technique classes, dancers are considered members of the Columbus Ballet Company. Dancers will be involved in our community outreach activities. New students must be evaluated prior to placement. Beginning Modern (Ages 8-10) This class focuses on the expression of inner emotions using a free-flowing, interpretative style rather than following the rigid rules characteristic of many dance disciplines. Some ballet training is required.
Yoga (Levels 4, 5 and 6) These dynamic classes will strengthen and stretch your body using a powerful sequence of flowing yoga postures and breathing techniques. Yoga will give you a greater opportunity to challenge yourself and soar beyond the edges of your mind and your mat! CSU Dance Conservatory instructors include: Maria Hirsch (Director), Bridget Adams, Laura Johnson, Tiffany Jarczyk, Shayla Hewitt, Anna Rodriguez, Janie Sutcliffe, Alyssa Gantner, and Cary KendrickHolmes. Check the ballet website for updates on classes.

Student Success We highly recommend the Classical Ballet program at the CSU Dance Conservatory for ballet enthusiasts and to anyone who might be looking for an extra-curricular endeavor for their children. The leadership ability of Maria Hirsch has helped to solidify Isabelle’s desire to do her possible best in Classical Ballet. The Classical Ballet program at the CSU Dance Conservatory has been beneficial to our daughter Isabelle on many levels. She has learned how to express herself emotionally and manage the pressures of growing up. She has also learned proper discipline, perseverance and balance. Isabelle was selected to attend the 2013 Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre summer intensive in New York City.
