Scholarship Awards Banquet The Construction Management Department held its annual CM Scholarship and Awards Banquet on the evening of Wednesday, October 26th, 2016. The event brought together students, staff, and faculty of the department with the scholarship donors who generously construction education. It took place in the Lory Student Center Ballroom, with a grand view of the late autumn sun setting over the foothills. Nearly 160 attendees met to honor the individuals, families, organizations, and companies committed to supporting CM students in their quest for academic excellence. The evening offered the CM department an opportunity to thank its many scholarship donors, as well as to recognize the scholarship recipients. It also allowed donors and recipients to meet one another. Because of donors’ strong personal connections to the CM department, usually as a result of time they or a loved one spent in the department, the evening created many wonderful opportunities for everyone to share stories and insights with one another. Opening the awards presentation, Department Head Mostafa Khattab and College of Health and Human Sciences Dean Jeff McCubbins welcomed attendees. Katie Brayden, Assistant Director of Development, announced the creation of three new scholarships. The scholarship presentation, emceed by CM students Jenna Richards and Zach Alves, followed. Two special moments capped off the evening. CM Alum Ryan Martorano (’98) of Hensel Phelps spoke movingly about what energizes him to give back to the department and its students. He described the support he received following a severe accident just prior to graduating, and how it not only helped him through a very difficult experience, but opened his eyes to the importance of giving back and supporting others in the pursuit of their dreams. Following Martorano, CM staff member Anna Fontana shared how the sudden loss of friend and colleague Natalya Bowen in December, 2015 had affected her and the department. Natalya served six years as the Communication and Special Projects Coordinator for the department. Fontana then presented the Ram Built Hard Award to Matthew Bowen, Natalya’s husband. Natalya’s parents, Laurie and Mark, joined Matthew to receive the award, and both Matthew and Mark spoke about the pride Natalya had in the department and the commitment she had to its success.

CSU Takes 1st Prize at ABC Student Competition
Kyle Deuschle, Ty Eberhardt, Darcy Wojciechowski, Ian Rice, and Tanner Atchison pose with trophy
The CSU Construction Management Department again showed why it is one of the premier programs in the nation. The CM ABC Competition Team, which includes Captain Ty Eberhardt, Kyle Deuschle, Ian Rice, Darcy Wojciechowski, Tanner Atchison, and faculty adviser Jon Elliott, attended the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) Construction Management Competition in Dallas, Texas and claimed 1st place. The event, held November 13 - 16, is ABC's hallmark competition, and is designed to promote careers in construction management. The competition tests teams', "project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills." Phase 1 of the competition started weeks ago when the 23 participating teams received an initial problem statement, a bid proposal for an $11 million medical center in El Paso, Texas. Dallas marked the start of Phase 2. During this phase, teams were asked to incorporate

3 addendums into the original proposal. Judges then chose the top eight teams to move to Phase 3. In Phase 3 each team prepared a final proposal which was presented to the judging panel. The team was awarded first place and received a standing ovation from their fellow competitors. "It was hard not to get emotional on that stage. That is a moment none of us will ever forget!" said Deuschle. When asked what powered them to their success, the team stressed the importance of teamwork, attention to detail, and desire to always do better. As Deuschle explained, "We would go and do something and then sit down, look at it and say to ourselves we can make this better. It is going to take longer and be more difficult, but we need to try." Rice stressed how their classes had prepared them for the event, "The competition was truly a combination of all of our classes thrown into one."
Even before the competition began, the team began laying the groundwork for their success. Eberhardt and Rice spent the summer designing an Excel spreadsheet to assist in organizing their bid package and cost analysis. Once they received the initial problem statement the team worked non-stop for almost 8 weeks, putting in over 1000 hours preparing their Phase 1 bid proposal. They focused on combining their individual strengths to push the envelope of what the team as a whole could accomplish. As Eberhardt described it, "This was about the whole team, not just one person." There was also an emphasis on innovation. For example, they made extensive use of 3D software for their site plans. Also, rather than rely on PowerPoint for their presentation as most teams did, they created a video presentation using Syncro, a 4D modeling software. This allowed them to create a dynamic, time sequenced depiction of the project from start to finish. Faculty adviser Jon Elliott was effusive with his praise for the team, "I am extremely proud of the team! Each member spent countless hours and many long nights and weekends in the computer lab during the preparation period. The number of compliments the team received from competing teams, judges, and industry members was astounding. I am incredibly privileged to work with such talented and motivated students!"

BIM Specialist Chris Araujo Presents at USGBC Event
Chris Araujo of Morley Builders presents on Sustainability through BIM practices at a USGBC club sponsored event
Chris Araujo of Morley Builders presented on using building information modeling (BIM) to promote sustainable building techniques to a packed house of more than 90 CM students on November 2nd, 2016. Araujo leads the Virtual Preconstruction and Estimating team at Morley Builders. He specializes in BIM applications on high profile, complicated projects, drawing from his eleven years of experience working on hotels, museums, and ultra-high-end residences designed by such famed architects as Tadao Ando, Renzo Piano, and Frank Gehry.
The presentation depicted real world projects that are utilizing BIM to achieve sustainable buildings. Araujo discussed the various ways BIM is preparing the AEC industry for a new chapter in designing and constructing buildings. One that takes more into consideration than just habitable space. He emphasized the obligation that we face as an industry to adopt rapidly changing technologies and to ensure that buildings are more efficient from conception through lifecycle and beyond.

According Stephen Wheeler, “His presentation opened my eyes to the wide range of activities that BIM can be used for. Initially, when I think of BIM and sustainability, I think of prefabrication, “crash” tests, and virtual and augmented realities. However, I learned that these activities are only scratching the surface. Chris’s presentation went on to explain how cutting edge innovations in BIM allow contractors and the design team to utilize BIM for scheduling, shadow range analyzing, commissioning, calculating carbon footprints, and much more.” Araujo’s visit gave students in attendance an overview of how construction and social and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. His experience in the industry allowed students to discuss real world projects utilizing the concepts he presented. As the construction industry inevitably moves towards environmentally conscious building techniques, presentations such as this allow students to enter the industry with their best foot forward. This event was organized by the USGBC student club and the CON 476 class.

Department Strengthens International Partnerships Dr. Asli Pelin Gurgun, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Yildiz Technical University, Turkey, recently spent a day visiting with the CM department. The visit was the result of a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Yildiz Technical University over the summer. The MOU was designed to facilitate the exchange of faculty and students and promote collaborative research and learning opportunities between CSU and YTU. Gurgun was learning about the CM program and discussing research opportunities with faculty. Several promising areas were identified and plans made to conduct further discussions in the future. She also presented a seminar, “Impacts of Construction Risks of LEED-Certified Projects,” to faculty and students. While part of her presentation focused on the status of the construction industry in Turkey, it also reinforced the fact that construction is a global business. To succeed, students and practitioners need to understand global and cultural issues that affect construction practice.
