Welcome to the College of the Arts Spring 2025 Season. As we come together to enjoy incredible art, dance, music and theatre programming from across the college, I know we are all still reeling from the recent fires that tore through the communities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. In many ways, we are all Angelenos and when our city breaks, we break. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are finding comfort in processing complex thoughts and emotions the only way we know how: through the arts. It is our calling and what ties us to our community. Through our programming, we hope to provide a bit of respite to all of you during this time of regrouping and rebuilding.
In the College of the Arts, every note, every movement, and every word spoken on stage brings opportunity for discovery and connection. Whether you are a fellow Titan, family member, or community supporter, we are thrilled to have you here. You are now part of something much larger than this single performance. You are joining a vibrant and diverse collective of artists and technicians working together to push the boundaries of their craft.
Spring 2025 brings us a season of fresh programming to challenge our perceptions and immerse us in new perspectives. Later this month, the School of Music presents “Hajar,” a contemporary opera synthesizing ancient Jewish and Islamic stories into a modern immigration tale. Theatre begins their season with “Significant Other,” a heartfelt tale of love and longing in 21st century New York City. If you haven’t yet seen our spectacular new gallery building, make time to see “Chris O’Leary: Gravity Well” – an exploration of the cosmic phenomena of gravitational waves using video, sound, and images. In May, our dancers and choreographers return to the intimate Hallberg Theatre in “Spring Dance Theatre: From All Sides,” where viewers will experience a variety of dance forms from every angle of the stage.
It takes more than just the emotional support of friends, family, professors, and mentors to enable students to take creative risks of expression. As a college, we remain committed to providing these aspiring arts professionals with scholarships, financial assistance, and the industry-ready equipment, facilities, and opportunities to further develop their skills outside the classroom. Justin BENAVIDEZ
Hailed as “a true virtuoso of his instrument” by Fanfare Magazine, Justin Benavidez is Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the Eastman School of Music and Principal Tuba of the Syracuse Orchestra. In the summer, he teaches and performs at the Round Top Music Festival in Round Top, Texas and at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz, California.
Benavidez has performed across Europe, Asia, and North America. He has appeared as a concerto soloist with various ensembles, including the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. His debut solo album Emblems won Silver Medals in the Classical Album and Solo Instrumentalist categories of the 2018 Global Music Awards. The International Tuba Euphonium Association Journal described it as “an impressive and highly entertaining record” on which Benavidez “shreds with enthusiasm, exuberance, and precision.” His second album Storyteller won Silver Medals in the Classical Album and Solo Instrumentalist categories of the 2022 Global Music Awards and was named a finalist for the 2023 ITEA Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording. Fanfare described the album as “splendidly eloquent […] a masterclassin expressiveness.”
As an orchestral tubist, Benavidez has performed with the symphony orchestras of Charleston, Charlotte, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Rochester, Santa Fe, Sarasota, Tallahassee, and Utah. He is the only tubist to have been awarded the New Horizons Fellowship and the Orchestral Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival where he was a student for six summers, held
the principal tuba chair in the festival orchestra, and was the winner of the prestigious Aspen Music Festival concerto competition.
Benavidez was the distinguished recipient of the Horace H. Rackham Merit Fellowship for doctoral studies at the University of Michigan and was presented with the UM Paul Boylan Award for outstanding accomplishments and significant contributions in the field of music.
As a scholar, Benavidez was awarded the McKnight Faculty Fellowship to complete his research on the most significant solo repertoire for tuba, culminating in a critical volume that will be published by Oxford University Press. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the ITEA Journal and was the editor for Flow Studies through Mountain Peak Music, a daily routine regimen for tuba.
As one of today’s leading educators, Benavidez is frequently invited to present master classes and perform as a guest recitalist at preeminent universities, workshops, and conferences. Notable invitations have included Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Yale University, Rice University, the Kunitachi College of Music in Tokyo, the Bern University of the Arts in Switzerland, the Lyon Conservatory of Music, the Paris Conservatory of Music, and multiple International Tuba Euphonium Conferences. He was awarded the Florida State University Teaching Award in 2021 for exceptional teaching and mentorship. Benavidez’s students have distinguished themselves through numerous accomplishments and awards, including first place prizes at international competitions, performing positions in premier military bands and orchestras, and teaching positions at secondary and collegiate institutions.
Benavidez is a Melton Meinl Weston and Denis Wick performing artist. He performs on his Meinl Weston 2182W F tuba and Nirschl York CC tuba.
Hannah YI
Hannah Yi is an accomplished chamber musician, concert pianist, and respected piano pedagogue based in Orange County, California. From the early stages of her musical journey, she embarked on a path of excellence under the guidance of renowned instructors Ick-choo and Hae Young Moon. Her educational pursuits led her to esteemed institutions such as Depaul University, Azusa Pacific University, the Eastman School of Music, and the prestigious Tchaikovsky State Conservatory.
Throughout her musical career, Hannah had the privilege of studying with esteemed mentors including Roza Yoder, Eteri Andjaparidze, Irina Postinokova, Netlita True, and Louise Thomas. Her talent and unwavering commitment to her craft have earned her victories in various competitions, including the Russian National Piano Competition in San Jose, CA, and the Union League Civic and Arts Scholarship Competition in Chicago, IL.
Hannah’s captivating performances have been showcased on radio stations like WFMT Chicago and KUSC. She has also had the honor of collaborating with notable orchestras, including the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, YMF Debut Orchestra, Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, Pasadena POPS Orchestra, Antelope Valley Symphony, and Azusa Pacific Symphony and the La Mirada Symphony.
In addition to her performing career, Hannah is passionate about sharing her knowledge and love for music. She has held teaching positions at Azusa Pacific University and Orange County High School of the Arts, and currently serves on the faculties of Chapman University and Long Beach City College. Hannah actively engages with the community through her involvement with LA Opera Connects and collaborations with local artists spanning various genres. She is also a member of the Long Beach MTAC Branch and operates a successful private teaching studio in La Palma, CA.
