Welcome to the fall performance season at Clayes Performing Arts Center. As you arrived, you may have noticed that the southwest corner of campus looked a bit different than when you last visited. I am thrilled to announce that the Visual Arts Modernization Project is well underway! The project will add two new buildings: a single-level structure comprised of the four existing galleries and a two-story building along State College Blvd, containing technology-driven classrooms, office space, a research library, and collaborative teaching and learning spaces. This newly reimagined visual arts complex will have a lasting impact on the college and the community, transforming how we teach, learn, engage with, and experience art.

Despite the disruptions to the college caused by this much-needed renovation, we are committed to delivering the same high-quality, pre-professional arts training our 2,800 students expect; this season’s offerings are no exception. Our thriving community of artists, technicians, and educators have combined their formidable skills to deliver a fall semester of programming shaped by the same diversity reflected on our campus. This September, the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series began introducing students and the public to a BIPOC slate of innovative and prominent arts professionals. On October 1, the School of Music’s Bill Cunliffe, Rodolfo Zuniga, and their jazz ensembles kick off October in Meng Concert Hall (along with a surprise guest!). Meanwhile, Theatre productions focus on personal and timeless struggles: Jessica Swale’s “Blue Stockings” tells the empowering story of four young women fighting against sexism for their right to a university education in 18th century England, and in “She Kills Monsters,” identity and fantasy converge to create a modern coming-of-age story. CSUF dancers and choreographers close the season with Fall Dance Theatre’s “Momentum,” centered on the human impulse to seek, strive, and move forward to motivate change.

As we begin the 2022 fall semester anticipating the transformative changes ahead, we remain dedicated to enhancing the academic and creative potential of the current students within this living laboratory for the arts. Their success is uniquely measured in phrases of choreography, lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students actively work towards impacting the arts of the future. LORI LAITMAN

Described by Fanfare Magazine as “one of the most talented and intriguing of living composers,” Lori Laitman has composed multiple operas, choral works, and hundreds of songs setting texts by classical and contemporary poets, including those who perished in the Holocaust. Her music is widely performed throughout the world and has generated substantial critical acclaim.

In May 2016, Opera Colorado presented the World Premiere of Laitman’s opera The Scarlet Letter, with a libretto by David Mason. Gramophone Magazine wrote of the 2017 release: “The first thing that leaps into one’s ears is the sheer beauty of the music. Laitman has devoted much of her career to the art song, and her ability to meld words with lyrical, often soaring lines is on abundant display in her…impressive and fervent opera.” It was named a Critic’s Choice by Opera News and one of the top 5 CDs of 2018 by Fanfare Magazine. Laitman and Mason also collaborated on Vedem, a Holocaust-themed oratorio commissioned and premiered by Music of Remembrance. A staged production of this work, alongside Hans Krasa’s Brundibar, premiered with Indianapolis Opera in March 2022. Laitman and Mason continue their collaboration with Ludlow, an opera that examines the U.S. immigrant experience through the lens of the 1914 Colorado mining town disaster. The Wind Sighs, the Poet’s aria from the opera, opens Stephen Powell’s 2021 Grammy-nominated CD American Composers at Play

The Three Feathers, Laitman’s children’s opera with librettist Dana Gioia (based on a Grimm’s fairy tale) was commissioned by the Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech, where it premiered in October 2014. Seattle Opera commissioned an abridged version of the work, which toured Washington State in 2018. The orchestral abridged version premiered at The Hartt School in January 2019, and L’arietta Productions in Singapore presented the international premiere in November 2019. Opera Steamboat’s full production took place in August 2022 and the next full production will be September 2023 with Solo Opera in California.

Uncovered, Laitman’s one-act chamber opera with librettist Leah Lax (based on her memoir), has been commissioned by Utah State University, City Lyric Opera and The New York Opera Society. The premiere took place in March 2022 at The Caine Lyric Theatre in Logan, UT in a production directed by Beth Greenberg, who will also direct City Lyric Opera’s NYC premiere in November 2022. The work was a finalist for the 2018 Pellicciotti Opera Prize.

Laitman has an extensive discography, with releases on Acis, Albany, Naxos, and other labels. She continues to receive prestigious commissions, including from the BBC, The Royal Philharmonic Society, Opera America, Opera Colorado, Seattle Opera, Grant Park Music Festival, Washington Master Chorale, Music of Remembrance and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Her works have been featured on Thomas Hampson’s Song of America radio, Internet series and website, and in The Grove Dictionary of American Music. Laitman is a frequent guest composer at universities across the country.

A magna cum laude Yale College graduate, she received her MM from Yale School of Music, which awarded her the Ian Mininberg Alumni Award for Distinguished Service in May 2018. For more information, please visit www.artsongs.com.

MARK ROBSON

Mark Robson is equally comfortable in styles ranging from early music played on the harpsichord and organ to the great Romantic repertoire and beyond to contemporary piano works demanding theatrical participation from the performer. As a collaborative artist with singers and instrumentalists, he commands the respect of his peers in both the recital and chamber settings. He presents an annual recital for the L.A. series Piano Spheres and has performed for Jacaranda on numerous occasions. As an organist, he has also appeared as a soloist in the Minimalist Jukebox at Disney Hall and has performed on the organ in Mahler’s 8th Symphony at the Hollywood Bowl in their 2008 season.

After completing conservatory and university training, Robson amplified his musical studies with extensive study in Paris—where he was a pupil of Yvonne Loriod, widow of composer Olivier Messiaen—and through his work as an assistant conductor and assistant chorus master for the Los Angeles Opera. During this time, he worked with renowned international singers and conductors, gaining great insight into the lyric art. He has also been a musical assistant at the Salzburg and Spoleto (Italy) festivals.

As a composer, Robson has been programmed on concerts in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Barcelona and Paris. The Brentwood-Westwood Symphony Orchestra has premiered two of his orchestral works, Apollo Rising and Christmas Suite. Soprano Patricia Prunty has recorded his song cycle A Child of Air and the same piece was presented by Sari Gruber at the winter Ravinia Festival.

The recipient of several scholarships and awards (including the Certificate of Excellence from the Corvina Cultural Circle for artistic contributions to Hungary), Mark Robson has received degrees from the University of Southern California and Oberlin College. He has worked as a vocal coach for the faculties of USC, Chapman University, the California Institute of the Arts, and Cal State Fullerton. Among his formidable musical projects has been the performance in eight concerts of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven and numerous performances of Messiaen’s massive cycle, Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus.

KERRY JENNINGS

Kerry Jennings is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Opera at Cal State Fullerton. His stage direction has recently been recognized with 1st and 2nd Place Awards in the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition with scenes from The Ballad of Baby Doe (2021) and Der Rosenkavalier (2020), as well as being named a national finalist for The American Prize in Collegiate Opera Direction for his production of Massenet’s Cendrillon. Additional directorial credits encompass works from Monteverdi to composers of the 21st Century and include highlights such as L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Dido and Aeneas, Cosí fan tutte, Hänsel und Gretel, La bella dormente nel bosco, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Old Maid and the Thief, Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters, Sorry, Wrong Number, and The Cows of Apollo. He also recently directed a production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte for the Austrian American Vocal Academy at the Kleines Theater in Salzburg. Before turning to a concentration in directing, his performance highlights include over forty lead and supporting roles comprised of early, standard, and contemporary repertoire, recently singing the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale in Sankt Anton, Austria. As a concert soloist, he has been heard in works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Beethoven, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, Puccini, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninoff, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Fonseco, Orff, Rorem, and others.

Noted for his “beautiful voice, great diction, and uncanny sense of style and phrasing,” Jennings’ recording In My Memory: American Songs and Song Cycles on Centaur Records was met with acclaim from both the composers and critics alike and features works by Libby Larsen, Tom Cipullo, Lori Laitman, and Richard Pearson Thomas. Libby Larsen has called his recording of her cycle My Àntonia “the definitive reference performance for future performances.” He is also featured on David Arbury’s CD Alchemy and as tenor soloist on the Houston Camerata’s recording of Fonseca’s Missa AfroBrasileira. He is currently working on his second solo disc of American Song Cycles which will feature works by Juliana Hall and Zachary Wadsworth. He was a District Winner and Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Jennings is a member of several music organizations, including NATS, Opera America, The Recording Academy, The College Music Society, and NOA, where he is on his fourth cycle as a member of the Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition Committee.
