WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. If ensuring the arts remain at the forefront of higher education in Orange County is a passion of yours, I encourage you to support the College of the Arts at any level by donating to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence today (arts.fullerton.edu/giving). Thank you for joining us for another season of theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. Our doors are open, and we can’t wait to put on a show for you! Arnold Holland, Ed.D.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
ANNE LeBARON Anne LeBaron’s compositions have been performed worldwide. Her seven operas celebrate legendary female figures, including the renowned voudon queen, Marie Laveau, featured in Crescent City. She is currently completing two operas: LSD: Huxley’s Last Trip, which includes microtonal instruments built by Harry Partch; and This Lingering Life, a chamber opera based on playwright Chiori Miyagawa’s radical retelling of five classic Noh plays. The libretto, by Mark Campbell and Miyagawa, leaps deftly across centuries, cultures, and space to connect disparate people looking for meaning in their lives. Two scenes from the opera were performed live by West Edge Opera in May 2021. LeBaron was awarded a MacDowell residency in the fall of 2021 to continue work on this opera. Other projects currently underway include Femicide, commissioned by cellist Rocio Diaz de Cossio, and a new work for horn and harp, commissioned by Rachel Constantino. Also active as a writer, LeBaron has published essays on subjects ranging from hyperopera, to surrealism, to how artists confront our post-truth era. Her keynote address for the Totally Huge New Music Festival in Perth, Australia, “Sonic Ventures in Post-Truth Surrealism,” has been published in Sound Scripts, Vol. 6. Her frequently cited essay “Reflections of Surrealism in Postmodern Musics” is published in Postmodern Music/Postmodern Thought. “Timbral and Spatial Ambiguities in the Mesmerizing Music of John Palmer: Thereafter, Transparence, and Woanders” now appears in the new Vision Edition publication, Looking Within: The Music of John Palmer. She was invited to contribute to a forthcoming volume celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Center for New Performance, where her article “What to Think About What to Wear” will be available in 2022. She performs as a harpist specializing in improvisation with the L.A.-based Present Quartet. Her most recent recording, Unearthly Delights, was released on Innova. LeBaron lives in the greater Los Angeles area, where she teaches in the Composition and Experimental Sound Practices Program at CalArts. Her music is published by Composers Edition. www.annelebaron.com

ABOUT THE ARTIST
JILL FREEMAN Jill Freeman is a Los Angeles singer, songwriter, performer, poet, and visual artist. Her trio, The Life Is Grand Band, was a stalwart of the L.A. music scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s, gaining an avid following for its tight harmonies and original songwriting. Their song “Feel Like Makin’ Art” was included on the Fast Folk series which is now part of the Folkways Smithsonian collection. Following the dissolution of the band, Jill went on to develop her own style of songwriting. Her debut solo effort Songs About Sex and Depression garnered tremendous reviews for idiosyncratic and highly personal songwriting. With her latest CD, A Handmade Life, Jill takes her songwriting to a new and deeper level. Using folk and fairy tales as her starting point, she explores the subconscious underpinnings of these timeless—and often very disturbing—stories and how they reflect the human experience. A Handmade Life is made more compelling by the music that blends a singer/songwriter sensibility with intricate arrangements and instrumentation played by some of the best musicians in Los Angeles. Jill’s songs and voice have been frequently heard on film and television. She also collaborated with blues guitar legend Robben Ford for his Keep on Running CD. Jill and composer Jack Van Zandt collaborated on the song cycle1 Apples and Time Crack in October and they are collaborating on further projects, including The New Frontier, an opera about Helen of Troy, and more operas and song cycles. www.jillfreeman.com
ABOUT THE ARTIST
STACEY FRASER Stacey Fraser has been described as having a “wonderfully controlled soprano voice,” by Alex Ross of the New York Times, and “an astonishing presence,” by Jennifer de Poyen of the San Diego Union Tribune. The Canadian soprano’s eclectic musical interests have made her much in demand on international operatic, concert, and theater stages across the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. In a review of the concert Sequenza~Sequenza! at Tuesdays at Monkspace, Mark Swed of the Los Angeles Times stated, “Stacey Fraser made Luciano Berio’s Sequenza into a seamless aria, sure of musical direction while missing none of the humor or the frightening shocks of horror.” Recent credits include the title role in Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot by Peter Maxwell Davies; the starring role in a music art film entitled Still Life After Death by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Sandra Powers; the premiere of Grammywinning composer Jack Van Zandt’s song cycle written for her, A Chaos of Light and Motion; and director/ producer of Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson. Current projects include performing premieres of NEA-awarded operas by Pamela Madsen and Jack Van Zandt, and producing a CD with Van Zandt, which will include his A Chaos of Light and Motion and new arrangements of four songs by Kurt Weill. Fraser is Director of Opera Theater and Chair of Music at California State University San Bernardino. www.staceyfraser.com
