Welcome to the fall performance season at Clayes Performing Arts Center. As you arrived, you may have noticed that the southwest corner of campus looked a bit different than when you last visited. I am thrilled to announce that the Visual Arts Modernization Project is well underway! The project will add two new buildings: a single-level structure comprised of the four existing galleries and a two-story building along State College Blvd, containing technology-driven classrooms, office space, a research library, and collaborative teaching and learning spaces. This newly reimagined visual arts complex will have a lasting impact on the college and the community, transforming how we teach, learn, engage with, and experience art.

Despite the disruptions to the college caused by this much-needed renovation, we are committed to delivering the same high-quality, pre-professional arts training our 2,800 students expect; this season’s offerings are no exception. Our thriving community of artists, technicians, and educators have combined their formidable skills to deliver a fall semester of programming shaped by the same diversity reflected on our campus. This September, the Begovich Visual Arts Lecture Series began introducing students and the public to a BIPOC slate of innovative and prominent arts professionals. On October 1, the School of Music’s Bill Cunliffe, Rodolfo Zuniga, and their jazz ensembles kick off October in Meng Concert Hall (along with a surprise guest!). Meanwhile, Theatre productions focus on personal and timeless struggles: Jessica Swale’s “Blue Stockings” tells the empowering story of four young women fighting against sexism for their right to a university education in 18th century England, and in “She Kills Monsters,” identity and fantasy converge to create a modern coming-of-age story. CSUF dancers and choreographers close the season with Fall Dance Theatre’s “Momentum,” centered on the human impulse to seek, strive, and move forward to motivate change.

As we begin the 2022 fall semester anticipating the transformative changes ahead, we remain dedicated to enhancing the academic and creative potential of the current students within this living laboratory for the arts. Their success is uniquely measured in phrases of choreography, lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students actively work towards impacting the arts of the future. CHRIS DINGMAN

Chris Dingman is a vibraphonist and composer known for his distinctive approach to the instrument: sonically rich and conceptually expansive, bringing listeners on a journey to a beautiful, transcendent place. He has been profiled by NPR, the New York Times, DRUM magazine and many other publications, and has received fellowships and grants from the Chamber Music America, the Doris Duke Foundation, New Music USA, and the Herbie Hancock Institute (formerly the Thelonious Monk Institute).

Ever growing and evolving, Dingman’s latest work is focused on music for solo vibraphone as well as his trio. His latest album with the trio, Embrace, was awarded the prestigious New Music USA project grant and will be released in 2020. The album features Linda May Han Oh on bass and Tim Keiper (David Byrne, Vieux Farka Toure) on drums, and is produced by Keith Witty (Thiefs, Somi).

In recognition of his recent work, Dingman was among the five vibraphonists nominated for “Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year” in the 2021 Jazz Journalists Association Awards, and among the four vibraphonists recognized in the 2020 Jazz Times Critics Poll (released February 2021). From Fall 2020 to the present, he has been releasing one new solo piece per week for subscribers to his series on Bandcamp, recording and releasing over 40 tracks and counting.

Dingman continues to keep up a busy performance schedule, including numerous tours of Western Europe, Canada, and the United States, as well as a rigorous performing and recording schedule in the New York City area. Recent performances have included some of the world’s top festivals, including the North Sea, Vancouver, Newport, and Torino Jazz Festivals, as well as some of the world’s finest performing arts venues such as Bimhuis (Amsterdam), Culturgest (Lisbon), Wexner Center (Columbus, OH), Atlas Arts (Washington DC), the Rubin Museum of Art, Joe’s Pub; and universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Wesleyan, University of Michigan, and many others.

While growing up in San Jose, California, Dingman began piano and percussion studies at an early age. He went on to attend Wesleyan University, where he received his B.A. with honors in music. While at Wesleyan, he studied intensively with vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, drummer Pheeroan AkLaff, composer/multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton, and mridangist David Nelson.

In addition to performing, Dingman is an active educator, working with students of all ages and levels for the past 20 years. His extensive teaching experience includes presenting master classes at conservatories and schools both nationally and internationally (including Miami-Dade College, Trinity College, Vancouver Jazz Festival, the National Conservatory of Vietnam, Staffeldsgate College in Oslo, Norway, and more), directing a summer music camp for students ages 11-18, leading jazz ensembles at the high school and middle school levels, and teaching group percussion classes for both children and adults.

In addition to presenting workshops and educational residencies throughout the world, Dingman teaches vibraphone, composition, piano, percussion, and jazz improvisation in private lessons and group classes through Inner Arts Initiative and Play Music in Brooklyn, NY, and teaches vibraphone performance at The New School University.

RODOLFO ZUÑIGA

Drummer and composer Rodolfo Zuñiga is a sought-after sideman and educator originally from San José, Costa Rica.

He has shared the stage with Gary Campbell, Ira Sullivan, Bill Mays, Silvano Monasterios, Tomasz Dabrowski, Stephen Scott, Troy Roberts, Roxana Amed, Martin Bejerano, Camila Meza, John Hart, Michael Dease, Rotem Sivan, Melissa Aldana, Andy Laverne, Othello Molineaux, Randy Brecker, Lew Tabackin, Don Friedman, Jonathan Kreisberg, Benny Golson, and Slide Hampton, to name a few.

As an educator, Zuñiga has a wealth of experience, holding previous positions at Florida International University, Broward College and Miami Dade College teaching Jazz, Music Production and Music Business. He has performed and presented at the Jazz Education Network convention and has been a Thelonious Monk Institute Clinician. He has taught masterclasses at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Denmark, The American Modern School of Music in Paris, The Universidad de las Americas in Ecuador, The New World School of the Arts in Miami, The University of Costa Rica, and the Symphonic Conservatory in San José.

As a leader and composer, Zuñiga’s quartet “Surfaces” has released two albums and has been featured in festivals around the US and in Central and South America. In 2005, the group was awarded the Carnegie Hall Residency under the direction of trumpeter Dave Douglas. In that same year he was chosen to be part of Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Group, with which he toured the U.S. and was featured at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The latest configuration of his group is an octet featuring the “Surfaces” jazz trio, alongside a string trio, electric guitar, and vocals.

As a sideman, Zuñiga has toured the world with highly creative jazz projects performing in festivals like The Copenhagen Jazz Festival, The Cully Switzerland Jazz Festival, Jazz Fest Málaga, The Ecuador Jazz Festival, Jazz Sur Le Ville Marseille, The Guatemala Jazz Festival, Ground Up Music Festival, The Jacksonville Jazz Festival, and The St. Petersburg Jazz Festival. In addition, Rodolfo is the drummer for multi-Grammy award winner and best-selling Latin Pop artist Julio Iglesias. As part of this group, he has performed at iconic venues like The Royal Albert Hall in London, The Kremlin Palace in Moscow, The Dubai Opera House, Rockefeller Center in New York, Luna Park Stadium in Argentina, The Forest Opera in Poland, The Yad Eliyahu Stadium in Israel, and The National Auditorium in Mexico City.

Zuñiga approaches teaching and performing with an open mind and a hunger to maintain a constant expansion of knowledge in areas such as the intersection of jazz and world music, music technology and nurturing diversity in jazz education.
