W ELCOME TO It is my pleasure to welcome you all to Rise: Music United, the School of Music’s 15th Annual Collage Concert & Scholarship Benefit. Welcome back to our first live Collage concert at Meng Concert Hall in three years; we’ve missed you! The School of Music at Cal State Fullerton represents one of the largest and most highly-regarded music programs across the 23-campus CSU system. It is a force in the local cultural economy, where graduates can be found leading numerous high school music programs and performing across Orange County and throughout the United States, which is a testament to the remarkable and noteworthy faculty who mentor them daily. Many of these musicians started here with little more than individual talent and a dream. Your donations contribute directly to the success of students in need by giving them not only a shot at that dream, but also a rich, fulfilling academic experience. While scholarship funds provide peace of mind in the form of financial support, they also serve as well-deserved recognition of the years of sacrifice, dedication, and hard work of each of these students. Their pathway to success would not be possible without the guidance and encouragement of others who have led the way. Each year, we honor these outstanding performers and educators who have made significant contributions to the field of music with the “Titan of Music” award. This evening, we proudly induct the newest “Titan of Music:” alumna, philanthropist, performer and educator, Lori Loftus. Congratulations Lori, and welcome back to the Titan family. Thank you for joining us for this musical extravaganza unlike any other concert you will experience at CSUF. And since we have nearly 350 students anxiously waiting throughout this concert hall ready to perform for you, let’s get on with the show! Arnold Holland, Ed.D.
Dean, College of the Arts
W ELCOME TO Welcome to Rise, the 2022 Collage Concert! This is the School of Music’s annual benefit performance for student scholarships. Our theme this year is “Rise” as we begin to rise again after the challenge of a global pandemic these past two years. As you will hear, our amazing students, ensemble directors, and support staff have risen to the occasion to bring you this immersive musical experience. All the more special is that we can enjoy this concert together again, in-person, in our beautiful Meng Concert Hall in the Clayes Performing Arts Center. While we celebrate this collaborative musical extravaganza, my thoughts turn to others in the world who are experiencing conflict and hardship at this time. I am reminded that music has the power to help unite and heal. Music is key to what makes us human—an expression of our creative beings. May this Collage Concert help us reflect on our collective humanity as our students and directors remind us that we can rise together when we collaborate, discover, study, compose, inspire, innovate, and perform—engaging our creative humanity. Performing this afternoon are some 350 students bringing us a gamut of musical styles and genres in an array of ensembles. This is a testimony to the breadth and depth of our students’ talent. Thank you for your generous support of these wonderful vocalists and musicians. You, our beloved patrons and concertgoers, help our School of Music continue its mission as a school of “artistry, community, and distinction.” Please enjoy Rise, the 2022 Collage Concert! LORI LOF TUS
Proud Titan alumna Lori Loftus is a graduate of Cal State Fullerton’s choral conducting program, and she and her husband John are dedicated supporters of the School of Music. Lori is the Founding Director of the Southern California Children’s Chorus (SCCC). Her abilities as a choral conductor have taken her around the world as both a performer and a clinician. She is also acclaimed for her skills as a keyboardist, having performed for years under the baton of such renowned maestros as Helmuth Rilling, John Alexander, Carl St.Clair and Zubin Mehta. In March, 2007, Lori was honored for a lifetime of achievements with the Outstanding Alumni Award for Excellence in Choral Music from her alma mater, California State University at Fullerton. Throughout her career, “Miss Lori” has brought intensive and quality education in both music and life principles to thousands of young singers. Many graduates of SCCC have distinguished themselves in the arts as vocalists, conductors, managers and patrons. Passion for people and for music fuels Lori’s accomplishments in all areas of her life. With three children out of the nest, Lori resides with her husband, John, in Newport Beach, California. While their daily companions now consist of two entertaining cats, the lively presence of their grandchildren raises the decibel (and joy) level around the house at least once a week! Lori’s favorite moments are when she is working with children, performing music, enjoying her family or competing in tournament golf.
