WELCOME
Arnold Holland, EdDDean, College of the Arts
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Collage, the School of Music’s 16th Annual Benefit Concert for Music Scholarships. What began as a performance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cal State Fullerton is now one of the School of Music’s most unique and captivating benefit concerts. Boasting hundreds of student musicians performing continuously without pause, Collage represents the limitless talent within the School of Music.
The School of Music at Cal State Fullerton is a force in the local cultural economy, where graduates can be found leading numerous high school music programs and performing across Orange County and throughout the United States – a testament to the remarkable faculty who mentor them daily. I invite you to come back and enjoy one of the many student ensemble, faculty, and guest artist concerts planned for this spring.
In addition to our School of Music concerts, we have a full slate of art exhibitions, theatre, and dance productions sure to keep you coming back to campus all semester. Through April 9, Begovich Gallery presents the exhibition Figures, Poses, and Glances: The Coded Illustrations of J.C Leyendecker, at MUZEO Museum & Cultural Center. In Theatre, Fefu and Her Friends opens April 9 at the Golleher Alumni House on campus, offering a unique theater-going experience. And in May, our student dancers and choreographers collaborate in rhythmic, expressive movement as Spring Dance Theatre returns to the Little Theatre.
Our diverse programming mirrors the diversity of the College of the Arts and is a testament to the values we hold. We embrace and support the possibility inherent in each student. As patrons, donors, friends, and family, I know you also champion their futures. Demonstrate your commitment to their success by supporting the Dean’s Fund for Excellence at any level. Donate today at arts.fullerton.edu/giving.
On behalf of the College of the Arts, thank you for joining us for this musical experience that is unlike any other concert on campus. We are so proud of our ensembles and look forward to seeing you at a future College of the Arts event.
Be well, Arnold Holland, EdD Dean, College of the Arts WELCOME from Randall Goldberg, PhD Director, School of MusicGreetings and welcome to the 2023 edition of Collage: Annual Benefit Concert for Music Scholarships. Our comprehensive School of Music – comprising educators, performers, and creators—explores and contributes to the development of many forms of music, and we are thrilled to include so much of what we do into a single, immersive event. In addition to highlighting our students and faculty, Collage also serves as an important fundraiser for music scholarships, and I am so grateful for the support we receive from the community through ticket sales and underwriting from our donors.
Music draws from all facets of the human experience. In any given composition, song, or improvisation, we may hear pronouncements of joy, sadness, anger, and contentment as well as expressions of nationality, race, faith and even ideas too abstract to define. Music communicates our humanity in sensations and feelings, helping us find the common ground that is too often obscured by our differences. It is not a modern idea to speak of music in this way; philosophers in antiquity often noted how the organization of individual notes into harmony resembles the structure of the human soul and the design of the universe surrounding us. With your support, we can draw on these musical traditions while forging new paths to the artform’s future.
On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, thank you so much for supporting the School of Music and attending this year’s Collage concert. I look forward to seeing you at other concerts and recitals, as well as events offered by the departments of Theatre & Dance and Art.
Sincerely,
Randall Goldberg, PhD Director, School of MusicDr. Randall Goldberg • Director, School of Music
