Greetings from the College of the Arts! It’s so good to have you back, and we have an exceptional spring season planned for you. With programming ranging from groundbreaking theatre productions to World-Premiere concerts, our spring offerings seem to shine a bit brighter this semester. On January 28, we kicked things off with the Visual Arts Modernization Project Preview Event and groundbreaking ceremony. More than 100 invited guests joined us for a sneak peek of the project as they engaged with some of the latest technology-driven art tools, experienced AR/VR project demonstrations by visual arts students, and viewed scale models of the complex. When completed, this renovation will transform our campus and community, positioning CSUF’s visual arts program – the largest in the Cal State system – as a leader in cutting-edge art education and practice within the CSUs. This season’s fresh slate of visual arts exhibitions and performing arts concerts and productions are sure to keep you coming back to campus! Beginning February 18, Begovich Gallery presents the exhibition “Figures, Poses, and Glances: The Coded Illustrations of J.C Leyendecker,” at MUZEO Museum & Cultural Center, exploring the coded depictions of queer culture in the eradefining images of this early twentieth-century American illustrator. The School of Music honors Black History Month with a performance of “Symphony No. 1 in E minor” by composer Florence Price – the first Black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. In Theatre, Maria Cominis’ “Women of Zalongo” weaves together the experiences of four generations of Greek women into a story of resilience, struggle, and survival. And in May, our student dancers and choreographers collaborate in rhythmic, expressive movement as “Spring Dance Theatre” returns to the Little Theatre.

Our diverse programming mirrors the diversity of the College of the Arts and is a testament to the values we hold. We embrace the possibility inherent in each of our students and celebrate their successes alongside them on their path to becoming future artists, educators, performers, and arts professionals. AMBROISE AUBRUN, violin

Hailed as a “marvelous violinist” (France Musique) with “sensitive tone” (Pizzicato Magazine) and “tremendous ease, suppleness and beauty of sound” (Nice-Matin), violinist Ambroise Aubrun has performed extensively in Europe and North America and has shared the stage with Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Scott St. John, Martin Chalifour, Clive Greensmith, Richard O’Neill, the Borromeo and Ebène string quartets among others.

Aubrun’s albums for the Editions Hortus and Navona Records have embraced a wide range of repertoire from Bach to Tanguy (b. 1968) and received praise of the highest caliber (4 stars Classica Magazine, 5 stars Pizzicato Journal, “coup de coeur” France Musique, and a nomination for the 2021 International Classical Music Awards).

Aubrun’s performances and albums have been broadcast on CBS, WFMT, France Musique, Klara Radio (Belgium), KPFK, WTUL New-Orleans and K-USC Los Angeles. He has served as guest concertmaster of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra, the Las Vegas Philharmonic and the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico, and is a regular guest of the Los Angeles Philharmonic violin sections.

Aubrun studied at the Paris National Superior Conservatory, UCLA and the Colburn Conservatory of Music. He is the winner of the Charles Oulmont Prize of the Fondation de France and laureate of the Langart Foundation in Switzerland.

Currently Assistant Professor of Violin at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Aubrun has served on the faculty of UCLA and UC Santa Barbara as well as of several academies, and is regularly invited to give masterclasses around the world. He is the artistic director of the Bruman Chamber Music Festival at UCLA.

Aubrun plays a Matteo Goffriller violin, on loan from the Langart Foundation.

WEIWEI LE, violin

A native of Shanghai, WeiWei Le began her violin studies at the age of six. Over the course of her career, she has won numerous international violin competitions including the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition (England), the Kloster Schontal International Violin Competition (Germany), and the Starling International Violin Competition (USA). She also has been awarded many important awards for her artistry from the Chinese government, and was listed in the "Who's Who in China."

Le’s musicianship has earned her full scholarships to the Yehudi Menuhin School, New England Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, Cincinnati University Conservatory of Music, Oberlin Conservatory with world renowned violin pedagogues, such as Yehudi Menuhin, Donald Weilerstein, Almita & Roland Vamos, Dorothy DeLay, and Kurt Sassmanshaus.

As a solo performer, Le has given recitals and concerts all over the world and has been featured in leading music stages such as: Carnegie Hall, Barbican Center, Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, and Davies Symphony Hall. She was invited for recitals in Korea,

Taiwan, Israel, England, Switzerland, France, Japan, Germany, China, USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, Australia, Puerto Rico, among others. She also performed with noteworthy orchestras such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic (Hong Kong), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London), Queensland Symphony (Australia), and others.

As a devoted chamber music player, Le has collaborated with great musicians and quartets, including Richard Stoltzman, William Preucil, Christopher O’Riley, Sara Chang, Eliot Fisk, the Ying Quartet and the St. Petersburg Quartet, and gave many concerts in North America, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.

Le currently resides in Las Vegas, NV. She is Associate Professor in Violin at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. As a passionate educator, she enjoys teaching private lessons and coaching chamber music tremendously. She is a frequent judicator in local and regional string competitions, and teaches summer festivals in Las Vegas, Kansas City and Vermont. Her students have won important competitions nationally and internationally.

Le currently plays on a Ferdinando Gagliano violin made in 1761.

KATE HAMILTON, viola

Violist Kate Hamilton enjoys an international career as Associate Professor of Viola at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and as the Co-Director of the International Chamber Music Festival in Joao Pessoa, Brazil. Recent engagements include guest artist at the 2022 Viola Festival in Fresno (CA), guest artist at the 2022 University of Southern Mississippi Viola Festival, chamber music performances with Frank Huang (New York Philharmonic concertmaster), and guest artist on the Music Maestri Series Milano Conservatorio (Italy). A special honor in June 2022, was to perform viola quintets in Leipzig with members of the Berlin Philharmonic on the Kunitz & Justiz Courthouse Chamber Series. Since 2019, she has received repeated invitations to substitute in the viola section of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany) under Sir Simon Rattle, amongst others. As a soloist, she has appeared at the Qintai Concert Hall with the Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra (China), the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, Central Oregon Symphony, and the Chamber Orchestra of San Jose (Costa Rica).

A sought-after educator, she teaches a large class of violists at the University of Nevada and has given masterclasses at numerous music schools worldwide including the Sydney Conservatory, Wuhan Conservatory, Milan Conservatory, New Zealand School of Music, University of Georgia, and the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University. Her students have continued studies at the Curtis Institute, Juilliard School of Music, and hold symphony, chamber, and academic positions around the world.

In 2022-23, Hamilton will spend several weeks as Visiting Professor at the Federal University of Paraiba (Brazil), in conjunction with the International Viola Society of Brazil. She has won positions in the San Diego (CA) and Guiyang Symphony Orchestra (China) as well as invited guest principal of the Bodø Chamber Orchestra in Norway.

Previous faculty positions include Artist-in-Residence at the University of MissouriColumbia and violist of the Esterhazy String Quartet, Associate Professor of Viola at Illinois State University; and Visiting Professor at Baylor University and the University of Otago (New Zealand).
