WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. If ensuring the arts remain at the forefront of higher education in Orange County is a passion of yours, I encourage you to support the College of the Arts at any level by donating to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence today (arts.fullerton.edu/giving). Thank you for joining us for another season of theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. Our doors are open, and we can’t wait to put on a show for you! Arnold Holland, Ed.D.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST
BOB McCHESNEY Bob McChesney was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and began playing the trombone in the fourth grade as part of his public school music program. He has since evolved into a world-renowned trombone soloist and an authority on trombone pedagogy. His trademark as a trombonist is the beauty of his sound, a lightning-fast technique, and his emotional connection to the music. With complete mastery of the instrument and extensive knowledge of jazz harmony, he has distinguished himself as one of the pre-eminent soloists in the world, not only in the realm of jazz and improvisation, but as an interpreter of the most difficult and highly technical Classical repertoire, as well. Primarily self-taught, at a young age, McChesney discovered a unique way of articulating on the slide trombone, called “doodle tonguing.” He has since authored what is considered to be the definitive treatise on the subject, called, “Doodle Studies and Etudes.” The method book has been critically acclaimed and endorsed by trombonists and music educators all over the world. A resident of Los Angeles, McChesney is a fixture in the recording studios, where he has enjoyed a long career with studio orchestras scoring hundreds of films and television shows. He can also be heard on CDs for Barbra Streisand, Shakira, Michael Buble, Natalie Cole, Rod Stewart, Chicago, Michael Bolton, and the following Grammy-winning CDs: “Ray Charles: Genius Loves Company,” Diana Krall’s “When I Look in Your Eyes,” and most recently, Arturo Sandoval’s “Dear Diz,” where he was a featured soloist. Legendary composer and conductor Lalo Schifrin exclaimed, “Bob McChesney is a virtuoso and has the gift to bring us the joy of music at the highest level.” A pre-eminent jazz educator and clinician, McChesney has been a welcomed guest artist all over the US and Canada. He has been featured twice with his Quartet at the International Association of Jazz Educators convention, and The International Trombone Festival, where he has spoken and performed for audiences as large as 5000 in attendance of his demonstrations, workshops and performances. McChesney is thrilled to have worked with legendary composer and entertainer Steve Allen before his death in 2000. He and Allen co-produced what would be the last CD from Allen’s prolific songbook, resulting in the highly acclaimed and perennial favorite on Top Ten Jazz CD Lists, “No Laughing Matter - The Bob McChesney Quartet plays Steve Allen.”
ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST
CALABRIA FOTI Calabria Foti is an American singer, violinist, composer, arranger, author, and educator. A consummate musician and a dynamic entertainer, she is a connoisseur of music, from Classical to Broadway. Her recordings and live shows have been praised by such diverse artists as piano virtuoso Van Cliburn, composer Johnny Mandel, trumpeter Chris Botti, and a host of other music and entertainment luminaries. Upon hearing her CD, “A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening” (2007, MoCo Records), legendary singer Johnny Mathis said, “Listening to a beautiful voice is one of my greatest pleasures in life. Listening to this recording of Calabria Foti’s voice is some of the most beautiful and artistic music I have ever heard. She is a treasure!” Born into a family of musicians and music educators, Foti was exposed to classical, jazz, and popular music at a young age. Passionate about movie musicals and classic films of the late 1920s on, she calls herself a “throwback,” in love with the period of American history that produced the songs of the Great American Songbook and the films from The Golden Age of Hollywood. Foti’s highly acclaimed CDs are a testimony to her musical sensibilities, and can be heard regularly on adult standards and jazz radio formats throughout the world. She has shared the spotlight and the microphone with TV’s Seth MacFarlane and in 2013, the two paired up to record the duet, “Let’s Fall in Love,” which garnered a Grammy Award nomination. Equally at home performing musical theatre, jazz, cabaret, or her own original songs, Foti has been called a “master of improvisation and interpretation,” and her voice has graced several major motion picture and television soundtracks. Also an accomplished violinist, Foti created the jazz violin sound for Fox TV’s Lisa Simpson, performed the virtuosic violin solo for the long-running theme to PBS’ Great Performances, and most recently was a featured soloist in the films, Muppets Most Wanted and Sherlock Holmes. She has played violin on hundreds of television and movie scores, and on CDs for Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Josh Groban, Daft Punk, and many others. With a delightful speaking voice, Foti has hosted the internationally syndicated radio program “Music Of Your Life” and is heard occasionally as a guest host on Sirius/XM Radio’s “Siriusly Sinatra,” where she enthusiastically discusses and plays the music she loves so much.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
BILL CUNLIFFE Cal State Fullerton Professor of Music Bill Cunliffe is a jazz pianist, composer, Grammy Award-winning arranger and record producer. He is known for blending jazz with classical and pop genres based on a deep knowledge of, and a lively curiosity about, musical styles. As a solo artist and bandleader, he has more than a dozen albums to his name and has appeared on numerous recordings. He grew up in Andover, Massachusetts and began piano lessons with his mother at the age of eight. At 20, having been captivated by the music of Oscar Peterson, he changed his focus from classical music to jazz. As an undergraduate at Duke University, he studied with jazz legend Mary Lou Williams. At the Eastman School of Music, he studied jazz piano with Bill Dobbins and arranging with Rayburn Wright. In 1989, he won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Cunliffe began his career as pianist and arranger with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Golson and James Moody. Later he toured and recorded with the Clayton Brothers and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, drummer Joe La Barbera, trumpeter Terell Stafford and jazz flutist Holly Hofmann. In addition to solo and guest appearances and leading CSUF jazz ensembles, Cunliffe performs with his trio, big band, Latin band, and his classical/ improvisational chamber ensemble. His interest in choral music produced a recording of his jazz-inflected sacred works (“Transformation,” 2008) with the choirs of All Saints Church in Pasadena, where he is composer-in-residence as well as a parishioner. Cunliffe’s score for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s 2011 documentary “On the Shoulders of Giants” received two NAACP nominations for Outstanding Album and Outstanding Group or Duo Collaboration. In 2009, he was awarded a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement and has received four other Grammy nominations including two for Best Instrumental Composition. The Los Angeles Jazz Society honored Cunliffe in 2010 with its Composer/ Arranger Award. In addition to teaching full time, Cunliffe is a longtime faculty member of the Skidmore Jazz Institute and the Vail Jazz Workshop.
