WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST
FÜREYA ÜNAL Füreya Ünal was born in Istanbul where she started playing the piano at the age of 3 1/2. Her formal music education began at five years of age at Istanbul University State Conservatory with Sibel Kudatgobilik. In 1996, she was granted her bachelor’s degree from Istanbul Conservatory. She has been awarded two masters degrees, the first from Istanbul Conservatory and the second from the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main. During Ünal’s education, she has studied with world renowned pianists like Irina Zaritskaya, Mikhail Voskresenski, Anatol Ugorski, and Leontina Margulis. Throughout 1995 and 1996, she in Monaco with State Artist Hüseyin Sermet at the Monaco Music Academy. In 1999, she was granted a full scholarship by the Turkish Educational Foundation to study in Frankfurt, Germany with Catherine Vickers, a student of Paul Badura-Skoda and Alfred Brendel. After completing her studies in Germany, she was a faculty member at Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul. In 2003, she performed a recital at the Spectral Music Festival in Istanbul, performing works by Jonathan Harvey, Messiaen, and Walicki. A recording of this concert can be found in various libraries throughout Europe. Being an avid chamber musician, Ünal has collaborated with many musicians from around the globe. As a part of the Unal Korkmaz flute-piano duo, she gave concerts and master classes in Istanbul as well as the United States, premiering works by contemporary composers. She has performed at the New Music Festival at California State University Fullerton numerous times, sharing the stage with famous composer Fred Rzewski and pianists Gloria Cheng, Ursula Oppens, and Kathie Supove. Since 2013, she and Taiwanese pianist Judy Huang have given numerous concerts throughout the Orange County and Los Angeles County areas as a piano duo. Ünal is the founder, artistic director, and pianist of the new music ensemble, Divan Consort. The ensemble has given numerous concerts and master classes since their beginning in 2009 in US and Europe. The group released their first album, “Refuge” on Albany Records which has been awarded with Gold Medal in Album category and Silver Medal in composition category by Global Music Awards. Ünal started Opus 1 Piano Studio, after she relocated to California in 2003, where she teaches students ages four and up. Her students have won numerous competitions and festivals in the Orange County area. She is a member of the Music Teachers Association of California Orange County, North branch, and she co-chairs the Bach Festival. Ünal is an adjudicator of competitions throughout the Orange and Los Angeles County areas. She has given a number of concerts, recitals and master classes in Turkey, Germany, Monaco, France, Bulgaria, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and the United States, both as a solo artist, accompanist and ensemble player. She was a recipient of the Cultural Exchange Fellowship in 2012 given by Turkish Cultural Foundation to give concerts and master classes in The People’s Republic of China. She has been recognized as a Woman of Distinction in 2013 from the 65th District of California by Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva. Ünal is on the faculty of California State University Fullerton. She has been teaching for over 20 years at schools in Istanbul, Germany and United States.
