WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. If ensuring the arts remain at the forefront of higher education in Orange County is a passion of yours, I encourage you to support the College of the Arts at any level by donating to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence today (arts.fullerton.edu/giving). Thank you for joining us for another season of theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. Our doors are open, and we can’t wait to put on a show for you! Arnold Holland, Ed.D.

ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST

KERRY JENNINGS, tenor Kerry Jennings is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Opera at Cal State Fullerton. His stage direction has recently been recognized with 1st and 2nd Place Awards in the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition with scenes from The Ballad of Baby Doe (2021) and Der Rosenkavalier (2020), as well as being named a national finalist for The American Prize in Collegiate Opera Direction for his production of Massenet’s Cendrillon. Additional directorial credits encompass works from Monteverdi to composers of the 21st Century and include highlights such as L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Dido and Aeneas, Cosí fan tutte, Hänsel und Gretel, La bella dormente nel bosco, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Old Maid and the Thief, Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters, Sorry, Wrong Number, and The Cows of Apollo. He also recently directed a production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte for the Austrian American Vocal Academy at the Kleines Theater in Salzburg. Before turning to a concentration in directing, his performance highlights include over forty lead and supporting roles comprised of early, standard, and contemporary repertoire, recently singing the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale in Sankt Anton, Austria. As a concert soloist, he has been heard in works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Beethoven, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, Puccini, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninoff, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Fonseco, Orff, Rorem, and others. Noted for his “beautiful voice, great diction, and uncanny sense of style and phrasing,” Kerry’s recording In My Memory: American Songs and Song Cycles on Centaur Records was met with acclaim from both the composers and critics alike and features works by Libby Larsen, Tom Cipullo, Lori Laitman, and Richard Pearson Thomas. Libby Larsen has called his recording of her cycle My Àntonia “the definitive reference performance for future performances.” He is also featured on David Arbury’s CD Alchemy and as tenor soloist on the Houston Camerata’s recording of Fonseca’s Missa AfroBrasileira. He is currently working on his second solo disc of American Song Cycles. He was a District Winner and Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Kerry is a member of several music organizations, including NATS, Opera America, The Recording Academy, The College Music Society, and NOA, where he is on his third cycle as a member of the Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition Committee. This summer he will join the faculty of the International Lyric Academy in Vicenza and Venice, Italy.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

JOHN-MICAH BRASWELL, piano John-Micah Braswell is a pianist, collaborator, and vocal coach who has been working in the greater Los Angeles community since 2019. In 2021, he received a Master’s of Music in Keyboard Collaborative Arts at the University of Southern California under the instruction of Dr. Alan Smith, before which he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from Baylor University where he studied with Professor Jane Abbott-Kirk. At Baylor, he was offered the “Outstanding Senior Man in the School of Music” award, and at USC, he received the Keyboard Collaborative Arts Department Award in addition to the prestigious Koldofsky Scholarship in recognition of his high academic and musical achievements. John-Micah’s musical aptitude first became evident when at age two he participated in music immersion classes. At age four, he began formal keyboard training and immediately fell in love with the piano. At age five, he won his first solo piano award, and at age eight, he was recognized for an original piano composition that advanced to the national level. When he was in middle school, his younger brother was offered the titular role in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, and the subsequent assistance which he offered would kindle a love of opera coaching that would grow throughout high school and college and eventually become his primary career. John-Micah made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2019, performing Liszt’s La Campanella after winning the Semper Pro Musica competition. Other honors include being selected as a finalist in the Baylor Concerto Competition, Colorado Piano Festival, and Arthur Frasier International Piano Competition and receiving 3rd place at the Kawai, Yamaha, and Schmitt Music competitions, 2nd place at the CSMTA competition, and 1st place at the Baylor Rising Stars, MTNA, Steinway, Loveland Orchestra, Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, Greeley Chamber Orchestra, and Baylor Summer Piano Institute competitions. John-Micah has performed with the Apollo Ensemble, the Loveland Chamber Ensemble, the Greeley Chamber Orchestra, the Loveland Orchestra, the Pikes Peak Philharmonic, the Baylor Symphony Orchestra, and the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra. He made his debut with the Colorado Symphony in 2014 performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Since graduation from USC, John-Micah has been in-demand as a collaborator and coach at the University of Southern California, the University of California Los Angeles, and California State University, Fullerton. He is also an advanced piano teacher at Cornerstone Music Conservatory, the director of music at All Saint’s Lutheran Church, and an assistant director for the Los Angeles Zimriyah Chorale. At Cal State Fullerton, he has coached voice students in topics from German Diction to French Song Literature and is currently preparing a faculty American song recital in collaboration with Kerry Jennings. At UCLA, he performed as the pianist for the premiere performance of Kay Rhie’s opera Quake and coached Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. At USC, he played continuo for performances of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and is currently coaching and assistant directing the American premiere of Uljas Pulkiss’s All The Truths We Cannot See: A Chernobyl Story.
