WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. If ensuring the arts remain at the forefront of higher education in Orange County is a passion of yours, I encourage you to support the College of the Arts at any level by donating to the Dean’s Fund for Excellence today (arts.fullerton.edu/giving). Thank you for joining us for another season of theatre, dance, music, and visual arts. Our doors are open, and we can’t wait to put on a show for you! Arnold Holland, Ed.D.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR TOMMY STATLER

Tommy Statler is currently studying to achieve is Master of Fine Art’s Degree at Cal StateFullerton with an emphasis in directing. He will graduate in May of 2022. Tommy graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 2009 with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting and Directing. His directing credits include Barefoot in The Park, As You Like It, The Moors, Blood of the Land, Midsummer Night’s QUEEN, Boys’ Life, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, and Dark Play or Stories for Boys. He has also held directing internships with Berkshire Theatre Group and Santa Cruz Shakespeare, as well as a teaching artist fellowship with Cal Shakes. Tommy also specializes as a teaching artist. While working with The Help Group, a charter school in the Los Angeles area specializing in Autism education, Tommy initiated a drama class for high school age students with curriculum focused on using acting/improv exercises and lessons to teach social skills. In 2017, The Help Group produced its first Shakespeare play, Macbeth. Director’s Note The scariest words I’ve heard in my life were, “I’m sorry but you’ll have to wait outside of the building.” I had made it a life policy of mine to give energy to things I can control, and avoid sending energy to things out of my control. Those words put me into a state of panic as suddenly I was overwhelmed with a weight from all of those out of control factors flooding me. As I sat there, I found myself coping through thoughts that turned to memories, memories that turned to dreams, and dreams that turned to one nightmare. This play is an exploration of those dreams and a confrontation with that nightmare. As you go through this play, I would encourage you relinquish your control in this world and let us show you a dream. If we offend, it is with our good will. That you should think, we come not to offend, But with good will. To show our simple skill, That is the true beginning of our end. Consider then we come but in despite. We do not come as minding to contest you, Our true intent is. All for your delight We are not here. That you should here repent you, The actors are at hand and by their show You shall know all that you are like to know.

ANN PHONG: RE-EVALUATING NORMAL | March 12 – May 21, 2022 For over four decades, artist Ann Phong’s paintings offered a glimpse of global challenges that reshaped her as an individual and we, as a society. Phong’s new body of work focuses on the crises amplified during the past two years of the pandemic. Rendered in vibrant hues, intense impasto textures, and embedded found objects, Phong’s large-scale paintings ruminate on memories of migration; the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic; contemporary social, political, and racial tensions; and the negative impact of humans on the environment. ... “Ann Phong: Re-Evaluating Normal” is organized by CSUF Nicholas + Lee Begovich Gallery and it is curated by Jennifer Frias Director/ Curator, with curatorial assistants Kaina Bernal, MA Candidate in Public History (‘22) and Anna Ponomareva, BA Candidate in Art History (‘22). Support for the exhibition and the gallery is made possible through the Art Alliance, Associated Students, Inc. Instructional Related Activities, the College of the Arts, Department of Visual Arts, and our community partners at the Vietnamese American Arts and Letters Association (VAALA).
