WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustomed to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. ABOUT THE DIRECTORS
PAMELA MADSEN Pamela Madsen is a composer, performer, theorist and curator of new music. From massive landscape inspired projects, intimate chamber music creations to multimedia opera collaborations and immersive deep listening works her work focuses on image, music, text and the environment. With a Ph.D. in Music Composition from UCSD, Mellon Foundation Doctoral Research Award at Yale University, Post-Doctoral researcher at IRCAM, Paris, and Deep Listening Certificate with Pauline Oliveros, her works have been commissioned and premiered world-wide by such ensembles as Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, Brightwork newmusic, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Tony Arnold, Nicholas Isherwood, Stacey Fraser, Claire Chase, Jane Rigler, Anne LaBerge, Brian Walsh, Lisa Moore, Vicki Ray, Aron Kallay, Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo, Ashley Bathgate, Trio Solisti, New York New Music Ensemble, Either/Or, yesaroun’ duo, California Ear Unit, Verdehr Trio, Zeitgeist, JACK, Ethel, Lyris, Formalist and Arditti string quartets with multimedia collaborations with visual artists Quintan Ana Wikswo, Camille Seaman, Jimena Sarno and Judy Chicago. ABOUT THE DIRECTORS Scandinavian Foundation, Fellowships from MacDowell, UCross, Women’s International Studies Center, Santa Fe, and Wurlitzer Foundation Residency, Taos, she is a frequent guest lecturer, composer-performer-improviser and at festivals and universities. She is curator of the Annual New Music Festival, Director of the New Music Ensemble and InterArts Collaborative Projects at Cal State Fullerton where she is Professor of Music Composition. www.pamelamadsenmusic.com
ERIC DRIES Eric Dries is a pianist, improviser, composer and educator who explores the innovative fields between traditional jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. His work explores a wide range of stylistic practices from jazz and contemporary music worlds in traditional and alternative performance situations. Dries has been a lecturer at California State University Fullerton School of Music for over twenty years and has taught a wide variety of courses including music theory, applied composition, music technology, jazz harmony and improvisation as well as co-directing the CSUF New Music Ensemble. As a composer, his early notated works explore virtuosic solo instrumental experimentation and unusually orchestrated chamber ensemble combinations. His current compositional work combines the rigor of compositional technique with improvised frameworks of traditional jazz and experimentalism of new music to create systems of group dynamics that encourage performer-composer collaboration and new sonic exploration in each performance. His piano performances reinterpret and invigorate the tradition of jazz standards with a foundation of rhythmic experimentation and harmonic and melodic expansion. Dries has performed and recorded with some of the top studio and freelance musicians in southern California where he is in high demand at high profile performance venues. Dr. Dries holds a Ph.D. in Composition and M.A. in Music Theory from University of California San Diego, where he studied with Rand Steiger, George Lewis, Anthony Davis, Roger Reynolds and Brian Ferneyhough, with post-doctoral studies and research in Music Technology at IRCAM. He studied jazz improvisation and composition with bassist Richard Davis and saxophonist Les Thimmig at University of Wisconsin Madison where he received his B.M. in Music Composition, studying with Stephen Dembski. www.driesmusic.com
