WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. STAGE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Envy, Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Lust, and Wrath take center stage as “Opera Meets the Seven Deadly Sins.” I hope you enjoy this eclectic mix of scenes from favorite operas like Dido and Aeneas and The Rake’s Progress and quality outliers such as Regina and The Merry Wives of Windsor, as well as new settings of two of literature’s greatest works, The Scarlet Letter and The Grapes of Wrath. And for a bit of levity comes a title that all Schools of Music and choirs throughout the world can identify with: Too Many Sopranos. Each of the scenes on this program either centers on or has a character that embodies one of the seven deadly sins. You will also see the color associated with each sin integrated into the design of each scene and I cannot thank Terri Nista and Lori Koontz enough for going above and beyond to help me realize this vision. Special thanks to Mike August, Bob West, Lois Bryan, and all faculty and staff who have led and mentored our wonderful student crew. Thank you to my colleagues in the Voice Area and in the entire School of Music and College of the Arts for their support and for the warm welcome. And lastly, the biggest of thanks to Mark Salters, David Bergstedt, and Jens Hurty who have prepared the students musically and co-captained this ship of deadly sins. The students have worked extremely hard to bring these characters to life within this challenging music and I hope you enjoy watching them as much as I have enjoyed working with them. In the meantime, decide for yourself if there is any peace or redemption for the wicked as “Opera Meets the Seven Deadly Sins.”

ABOUT THE STAGE DIRECTOR
KERRY JENNINGS Kerry Jennings is an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Opera at Cal State Fullerton. His stage direction has recently been recognized with 1st and 2nd Place Awards in the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition with scenes from The Ballad of Baby Doe (2021) and Der Rosenkavalier (2020), as well as being named a national finalist for The American Prize in Collegiate Opera Direction for his production of Massenet’s Cendrillon. Additional directorial credits encompass works from Monteverdi to composers of the 21st Century and include highlights such as L’Incoronazione di Poppea, Dido and Aeneas, Cosí fan tutte, Hänsel und Gretel, La bella dormente nel bosco, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Old Maid and the Thief, Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters, Sorry, Wrong Number, and The Cows of Apollo. He also recently directed a production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte for the Austrian American Vocal Academy at the Kleines Theater in Salzburg. Before turning to a concentration in directing, Jennings’ performance highlights included over forty lead and supporting roles comprised of early, standard, and contemporary repertoire, recently singing the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale in Sankt Anton, Austria. As a concert soloist, he has been heard in works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Händel, Haydn, Mozart, Puccini, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninoff, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Fonseco, Orff, Rorem, and others. Noted for his “beautiful voice, great diction, and uncanny sense of style and phrasing,” Jennings recording In My Memory: American Songs and Song Cycles on Centaur Records was met with acclaim from both the composers and critics alike and features works by Libby Larsen, Tom Cipullo, Lori Laitman, and Richard Pearson Thomas. Libby Larsen has called Kerry’s recording of her cycle My Àntonia “the definitive reference performance for future performances.” He is also featured on David Arbury’s CD Alchemy and as tenor soloist on the Houston Camerata’s recording of Fonseca’s Missa Afro-Brasileira. He is currently working on his second solo disc of American Song Cycles which will feature works by Juliana Hall and Zachary Wadsworth. Jennings was a District Winner and Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Jennings is a member of several music organizations, including NATS, Opera America, The Recording Academy, The College Music Society, and NOA, where he is on his third cycle as a member of the Dominick Argento Chamber Opera Competition Committee.
