WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST
ROB WATSON Rob Watson is Professor of Music (piano), Director, Performance Science Centre Lab, and Pianists in Performance curator at California State University, Fullerton. As a solo pianist, Watson has played recitals in Austria, Bulgaria, China, England, Italy, Japan, and the USA, and he has performed chamber music with such outstanding musicians as the St. Petersburg String Quartet, and members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Pacific Symphony, and the Verdi Conservatory (Milan, Italy). His recordings were released on the Educo label. Watson has research interests in principles of movement as they relate to piano performance and pedagogy, on which he has been invited to present at international (Beijing, 2017), national (Francis Clark Center, 2018), and regional conferences and venues (MTAC 2018, 2020). In 2011, Watson was awarded a grant to establish the Performance Science Centre lab that serves as the nucleus of instruction and research into peak performance for musicians in the School of Music, at California State University, Fullerton. Beginning Fall 2022, Watson will provide an introduction for all new undergraduate music students into principles of peak performance and musician-focused health and wellness. On a more advanced level, he is developing a post-baccalaureate certificate program, Performance Science for Musicians, as a science-based approach to optimal performance psychologically, physically, and healthfully. In order to promote student performances, Watson created (spring, 2000) and curates a community outreach program, “Pianists In Performance,” under whose aegis CSUF piano students perform community concerts, and, under sponsorship from an intramural grant process, brings guest artists to campus for masterclasses, student interaction, and performances. Watson is an alumnus of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the University of Notre Dame de Namur, and the University of Arizona, and he has worked with faculty of the Guildhall School (UK). He is a member of the Performing Arts Medicine Association, Music Teachers National Association, Music Teachers’ Association of California, and PI KAPPA LAMBDA, national music honor society.
PIANISTS IN PERFORMANCE Pianists In Performance is an outreach program seeking community members with grand pianos, and people who want to hear them really played! Such enthusiasts become “PIP Hosts” and are matched with emerging young keyboard artists from CSUF, “PIP Artists.” Our artists are selected by audition and have repertoire ready to perform for you!
