Greetings from the College of the Arts! It’s so good to have you back, and we have an exceptional spring season planned for you. With programming ranging from groundbreaking theatre productions to World-Premiere concerts, our spring offerings seem to shine a bit brighter this semester. On January 28, we kicked things off with the Visual Arts Modernization Project Preview Event and groundbreaking ceremony. More than 100 invited guests joined us for a sneak peek of the project as they engaged with some of the latest technology-driven art tools, experienced AR/VR project demonstrations by visual arts students, and viewed scale models of the complex. When completed, this renovation will transform our campus and community, positioning CSUF’s visual arts program – the largest in the Cal State system – as a leader in cutting-edge art education and practice within the CSUs. This season’s fresh slate of visual arts exhibitions and performing arts concerts and productions are sure to keep you coming back to campus! Beginning February 18, Begovich Gallery presents the exhibition “Figures, Poses, and Glances: The Coded Illustrations of J.C Leyendecker,” at MUZEO Museum & Cultural Center, exploring the coded depictions of queer culture in the eradefining images of this early twentieth-century American illustrator. The School of Music honors Black History Month with a performance of “Symphony No. 1 in E minor” by composer Florence Price – the first Black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. In Theatre, Maria Cominis’ “Women of Zalongo” weaves together the experiences of four generations of Greek women into a story of resilience, struggle, and survival. And in May, our student dancers and choreographers collaborate in rhythmic, expressive movement as “Spring Dance Theatre” returns to the Little Theatre.

Our diverse programming mirrors the diversity of the College of the Arts and is a testament to the values we hold. PETER HANNA

Oud player and composer Peter Hanna was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He started his music career when he first learned to play the Oud at the age of fourteen. He was taught at “Arabic Oud House” in Cairo, founded by world-renowned Oud player Naseer Shamma. He has participated in many festivals and performed with different bands in Egypt and the United States. He composes, produces and teaches Arabic music and also plays the piano. He is currently living in Los Angeles, California as a freelance musician, publishing albums and working on his music career.

STEVEN MAHPAR

Los Angeles-based musician and composer, Steven Mahpar enjoys a versatile career writing for film, television, and the concert stage. As one of Los Angeles’ active composers for television and film, Steven Mahpar has scored numerous animation and independent films including “Red” directed by Hyunjoo Song and “Last Stop Los Angeles” directed by Saied Pousti. His scores for film follow his influences from film music legends such as Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, and Miklos Rozsa. He received his Bachelor of Music in horn performance and a Master of Music in composition at California State University, Fullerton.

Mahpar’s Persian background has often been the inspiration for many of his concert works for orchestra, wind ensemble, and the chamber music genre. He has received commissions from Mt. San Antonio College, Riverside Community College, and a plethora of artists among which include Tony Ellis, Todd Miller, and Cynthia Ellis.

Mahpar currently teaches at Mt. San Antonio College and California State University, Fullerton.

DANIEL CASTELLANOS

Daniel Castellanos is currently a graduate assistant at California State University, Fullerton, studying wind conducting with Dr. Dustin Barr and saxophone with Dr. John Hallberg. Before starting his graduate studies, Castellanos earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and a teaching credential from CSUF. As an undergraduate student, Castellanos also performed with the nationally recognized CSUF Wind Symphony as an ensemble player and soloist.

After earning his B.A. and teaching credential, Daniel Castellanos taught at Day Creek Intermediate School, John L. Golden Elementary, and C.P. Lightfoot Elementary. His ensembles were awarded Unanimous Superior ratings by the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association during his time there. In addition, musicians from the Day Creek Bands were selected to perform with the SCSBOA All-Southern and CBDA AllState honor groups.

Castellanos teaches applied saxophone lessons at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Eastvale, California. He is passionate about helping young musicians succeed and advocates for music in public schools.

GREGORY X. WHITMORE

Gregory X. Whitmore is an Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education, at The California State University Fullerton School of Music. In this capacity, he teaches in the Instrumental Music Education Program, supervises student teachers and conducts the CSUF Symphonic Winds. In addition to his work in higher education, he is in his ninth season as Music Director of the Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble (Irvine, CA). This follows appointments as Director of Bands at Irvine Valley College (Irvine, CA), Mt. San Antonio College (Walnut, CA), and College of the Desert (Palm Desert, CA). Prior to his work in higher education, he spent 13 years as Director of Bands at Cathedral City High School (Cathedral City, CA).

A native of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Whitmore received his bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education from The University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance in Ann Arbor, Michigan. While a student at The University of Michigan, he performed in the University of Michigan Bands; and led the University of Michigan Marching Band as “Michigan’s Man Up Front” - Drum Major - from 1999 to 2001. He received his master’s degree in music with an emphasis in wind conducting from California State University Fullerton studying under Dr. Mitchell Fennell. He holds a master’s degree, and a doctorate in music and music education from Columbia University (Teachers College) in the city of New York.

Whitmore has conducted ensembles in such notable concert venues as The Golden Hall of The Musikverein (Vienna), The Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna), The MuTh (Vienna), Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall (Costa Mesa), Symphony Hall (Chicago), The Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), Carnegie Hall (New York City), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Meng Hall (Fullerton, California), among others. Under his direction, the Cathedral City High School Symphony Band was selected to perform as the showcase ensemble during the 2008 California Band Directors Association Annual Convention. He is the Second Place Winner of the 2017 American Prize in Conducting.

Whitmore belongs to professional organizations that include College Band Directors National Association, Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity, Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society, The National Association for Music Education, Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association, and the California Music Educators Association.

With a research interest in music educator values as operationalized into pedagogy, in addition to investigating the concert band as an artistic medium, Whitmore has presented research at music education symposia in the United States and abroad. His research has been published in Visions of Research in Music Education. He is a recognized member of Academic Key’s Who’s Who in Community College Education, as well as four editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He has been included in the 2005/2006 Edition of the National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teachers. He was selected to represent the State of California by School Band and Orchestra Magazine in the 2008 edition of “50 Band Directors Who Make A Difference.”
