WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustom to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. As a leading CSU in the arts, we are an essential part of the cultural fabric of Southern California, providing transformational experiences to our students, community, and beyond. ABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST
JOHN THIESSEN Described by The New York Times as “the gold standard of Baroque trumpet playing in this country,” John Thiessen’s performances combine beauty of sound with brilliance and virtuosity for 17th-19th century clarino repertoire. He appears regularly as soloist and principal trumpet with North America’s foremost early music ensembles, including American Bach Soloists, Tafelmusik, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Juilliard Baroque, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, the Boston Early Music Festival, and Early Music Vancouver. Internationally, he has performed under maestros Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, Nicholas McGegan, Ton Koopman and Andrew Parrott. On the modern trumpet, he recently performed as soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, and Principal Trumpet with the Orchestra of St Lukes. 2013-14 season highlights include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 2 with ensembles in NY, San Francisco, and North Carolina, Leipzig cantatas with Trinity Baroque, Messiah with Tafelmusik and American Bach Soloists, two European tours, and recordings of Beethoven symphonies. Thiessen holds degrees in Trumpet Performance from the Eastman School of Music and Musicology from King’s College, University of London, and has presented master classes for the International Trumpet Guild, The Juilliard School, the Glenn Gould School, UT Austin, UNT Denton, USC and LSU. He serves on the faculties of Juilliard’s Historical Performance Department and the American Bach Soloists Academy, and has recorded 70 CDs for Sony Classical Vivarte, Telarc, EMI, BMG, Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, London Decca, Analekta, CBC, Tafelmusik Media and Denon, including major works by Bach, Handel, Purcell, Vivaldi, Biber, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.

JASON LO Pianist, teacher, and chamber musician, Jason Lo is an in-demand performer whose diverse talents bring him around the globe. Audiences enjoy his performances in Strasbourg, London, Chicago, Honolulu, New York, and throughout Southern California, where he is based. He is proud to have performed at Westminster Hall, the 2012 London Olympic Games, and on multiple occasions, Carnegie Hall. He often collaborates and travels for competitions, conferences, and concerts for various organizations, such as the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA). He also presents guest lectures and recitals at Santa Monica College - Emeritus College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Mount San Antonio College, California Lutheran University, California State University Long Beach, the University of the Pacific, San Diego State University, Columbus State University, Wright State University, Ohio University, and the University of Northern Kentucky. Lo is proud to have shared the stage with Megumi Kanda (Principal Trombone, Milwaukee Symphony), Alex López Velarde (la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México), and Maki Mae (America's Got Talent). He has also played under the batons of Sharon Lavery, H. Robert Reynolds, and Bruce Broughton. Lo is a graduate of University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance studying piano with Antoinette Perry, and conducting with Larry Livingston, with minors in Theory, Instrumental Conducting, and Arts Leadership, specializing in French Music. His Master of Music in Piano Performance is also from USC. Previously, he completed his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance with High Honors, studying piano with Craig Richey from California State University, Long Beach’s Bob Cole Conservatory of Music. Other piano teachers include Susan Azaret Davies (Cal Poly), Martin Canin (The Juilliard School), Boris Slutsky (The Peabody Institute), and Edie Orloff (The Pacific Trio). While at USC, he served as a Keyboard Studies Graduate Teaching Assistant, and received the Outstanding Keyboard Studies Teaching Assistant Award for 2015.
ABOUT THE FACULTY ARTIST
SYCIL MATHAI Sycil Mathai is a trumpeter with a global musical career spanning genres from ensembles like The Knights Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to Broadway shows like “South Pacific” and “Mary Poppins.” He has also worked with artist Carter Burwell, the dance companies of Merce Cunningham and Mark Morris Dance Group, and movie directors Andy Kaufman and the Coen Brothers. Mathai has recorded for RCA, PBS, CBS, EA Sports, and Warner Classics, and has shared the stage with artists ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Stevie Wonder. Recently, he saw the release of his recording with The Knights Orchestra featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and a recording of violin concertos featuring Gil Shaham. Mathai is a graduate of Juilliard under the tutelege of Mark Gould, and Texas Christian University as a student of Steve Weger. He formerly taught at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
