Welcome to the College of the Arts fall 2023 performing and visual arts season. I am so proud of the collaborative efforts our faculty, staff, and students have undertaken to produce such a wide array of programming across four disciplines. It takes months, sometimes years, of work to create what you are about to enjoy – a commitment matched only by our collective passion for the arts. Each year, the college presents a wide variety of programming that reflects our diverse perspectives. In Theatre, the season begins with a stage adaptation of the hauntingly emotional novel and film “Let the Right One In,” which reveals both the darkest impulses of humanity and our universal desire for connection. Acclaimed 1975 hit musical “A Chorus Line” gets a fresh update by Marty Austin Lamar and Courtney Ozovek that will immerse audiences in the audition process of a Broadway show. In the School of Music, the Fullerton Jazz Orchestra and University Symphony Orchestra perform together in the first ever “Fullerton Pops!” Also in November, Begovich Gallery explores the midcentury architecture and aesthetics of our original Visual Arts Complex in the exhibition “PAST FORWARD.” While Begovich Gallery looks back at our historical beginnings, we continue to push toward the future as the Visual Arts Modernization Project (VA MOD) rapidly transforms the campus. Our complex’s two new buildings are fully framed, architectural details have been installed, and extensive interior renovations on two existing buildings are nearing completion. These changes bring years of dreaming and planning into sharp focus, but there is so much work yet to be done. From exterior paint to integrate our past and present buildings, to restoring the beloved “Water Wall” sculpture, to new software that will power the next generation of digital artists, there are many ways you can make a difference. The ways in which our students will benefit from the modernization project are as limitless as their imaginations, and as assured as our commitment to their success. In the College of the Arts, we measure student achievement in creativity, artistic integrity, and dedication, not in data points or statistics. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ben Ullery Praised by the Chicago Tribune for his “febrile intensity,” violist Ben Ullery enjoys a multifaceted performing career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral leader and educator. In 2023 he was chosen by Music Director Gustavo Dudamel for the position of Associate Principal Viola of the LA Philharmonic and previously held the position of Assistant Principal in the same orchestra since 2012. In addition to his appearances with the LA Phil, Ullery has performed across the country and abroad in the role of Guest Principal Viola with the Chicago Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Australian Chamber Orchestra. An active solo performer, he has recently given recitals at Festival Mozaic and La Sierra University where he premiered his own arrangement for viola of Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 1. Ullery is currently planning his first full-length duo album with acclaimed pianist Dominic Cheli which will feature works of Paul Hindemith, Rebecca Clarke, and Lillian Fuchs. As a chamber musician, he has been in high demand in the Los Angeles area and at festivals and concert series in the US and Europe. In addition to having performed over 50 chamber works on the LA Phil’s chamber music series in Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ullery has appeared at the Mozaic, Music in the Vineyards, Mainly Mozart, Emerald City, Music at Millford, Leksand, Grand Teton, and Aspen festivals, among others. He has been featured on NPR’s Performance Today as well as local broadcasts on KUSC in Los Angeles and Minnesota Public Radio. As a recording artist, he has been featured on releases on the Bridge and Albany record labels. An enthusiastic teacher, Ullery is on the teaching faculty at the Colburn School in downtown Los Angeles where he teaches orchestral repertoire as well as coaching the Colburn Orchestra’s viola section. Many of his former students have gone on to hold positions with top orchestras in the US, Europe, and Asia. He has given masterclasses at the Aspen Music Festival, California State University Fullerton, Azusa Pacific University, and the Shanghai Orchestra Academy. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Ullery earned a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the Oberlin Conservatory, and later studied violin at New England Conservatory and viola at the Colburn School.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Dominic Cheli, piano Dominic Cheli gave his Carnegie Hall Recital Debut in 2019 and has had a busy performing and recording career ever since. He recorded his 2nd CD on the Naxos label of the music of Liszt/ Schubert, and was a performer, producer and editor on a 3rd CD of the music of Erwin Schulhoff for the Delos Label featuring his collaboration on Piano Concerto No. 2 with Maestro James Conlon. He also recently completed work as a composer, audio editor and performer on the documentary Defying Gravity (2021). A native of St. Louis, Cheli has performed with orchestras all across the country and abroad including the San Diego Symphony, Sarasota Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Columbus Symphony, Princeton Symphony, Colburn Orchestra, Virginia Symphony, Adrian Symphony, and the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie (Germany). Upcoming engagements include appearances with the Seattle Symphony, a debut at Alice Tully Hall, and his 4th appearance at Carnegie Hall. Committed to engaging with his surrounding community, Cheli regularly performs and brings curated programs/educational residencies to schools and retirement homes. He has performed as an artist for Project: Music Heals Us, a non-profit organization that presents interactive classical music performances to diverse audiences in order to provide encouragement, education, and healing with a focus on elderly, disabled, rehabilitating, incarcerated, and homeless populations. Cheli has received degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, and the Colburn School studying with Andre-Michel Schub, Peter Frankl, and Fabio Bidini. He is a Yamaha Artist and recently appointed faculty member of the Colburn Community Music School.
Dahae Kim, cello Cellist Dahae Kim joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Assistant Principal in 2016. Previously, she served as Assistant Principal Cello of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She has been featured as soloist with the DSO in the Benjamin Lees Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra led by Leonard Slatkin and with the Detroit Medical Orchestra performing the Saint-Saëns Cello Cello Concerto No. 1 in 2014. Kim completed her studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2013 as the recipient of the Gregor Piatigorsky Scholarship, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees as a student of Laurence Lesser and Paul Katz. She also studied privately with famed cellist Bernard Greenhouse, formerly of the Beaux Arts Trio. She won first place in the 2010 Hudson Valley Philharmonic Strings Competition, returning the following year to perform Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. She was a participant at the Tanglewood Music Center for three years and served as Principal Cello of the National Repertory Orchestra in the summer of 2012, where she also performed as soloist in the Lalo Cello Concerto. As a chamber musician, she has performed on numerous occasions in Jordan Hall and Ozawa Hall, and coached with members of the Cleveland, Takács, Borromeo, and Juilliard string quartets. Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, and first studied music with her mother, who taught her piano and violin. She moved to Rockland County, NY, with her family at age eight; there she took up cello studies with Irene Sharp and New York Philharmonic cellist Qiang Tu.
