a Welcome from the Dean
Good afternoon and welcome to this very special performance as our choral ensembles, past and present, come together in celebration of a truly remarkable Titan: professor emeritus of music and founding director of Cal State Fullerton’s choral music program, David O. Thorsen. Many of you in the audience knew David personally and were well-acquainted with his immense talent, heart, and zest for life. Some of you here were his students and had the privilege of being directly impacted by his teaching and learning. While many more of you experienced David’s characteristic drive and spirit through choral performances given by his meticulously trained singers, much like the ones you are about to enjoy.
When David Thorsen began his remarkable career at Cal State Fullerton in 1960, he was charged with the enormous task of creating a choral program for the recently established Orange County State University. Then comprised of only one group of 40 singers, CSUF’s School of Music choral program now boasts over 300 singers performing in five vocal ensembles. Thanks to Thorsen’s leadership, the choral program gained national recognition and toured the United States and Europe, later performing with famed conductor Zubin Mehta. Today, the University Singers regularly perform at the Hollywood Bowl under maestros John Williams and Gustavo Dudamel and have most recently toured Spain and Australia.
As you listen to these soaring voices today, it is impossible to imagine a School of Music without their commanding vocals – a precedent set in motion by David’s visionary direction. The choral program he passionately devoted himself to for 35 years shines brighter than ever, representing a North Star for choral excellence. Headed by Robert Istad and Christopher Peterson, its graduates are highly sought after and can be found leading high school music programs, performing in professional choirs, and attending prestigious post-graduate music schools. Each of these former students carries an inspired legacy of commitment, training, and artistry that began more than 60 years ago, forever distinguishing them as Titans.
On behalf of the College of the Arts, I thank you for joining us for this exceptional performance as CSUF choral history meets its future onstage. Enjoy!
Be well, Arnold Holland, Ed.D Dean, College of the Arts

David o. Thorsen
David Oliver Thorsen, Professor Emeritus and founding member of the School of Music at Cal State, Fullerton, was born in Holland, Michigan on June 6, 1927. Dave is the son of Oliver Theodore Thorsen and Nora Arntzen Thorsen both natives of Escanaba where Dave spent his formative years on the shores of Lake Michigan with his younger sister, Norma. In 1943, when he was sixteen, Dave and his family settled in Long Beach, California. He attended and graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High. In May 1945, seventeen-year-old Dave signed up for duty in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was immediately assigned to the Naval Hospital in Corona, California where he was a medic for the next eighteen months. After an honorable discharge, Dave received music degrees from both Redlands University and Occidental College along with a California teaching credential. At Redlands, he met his then future wife, Cathrynn Ellen Bossard. Dave and Katie, as she was known, were married on July 12, 1952. They welcomed a son, Paul David, in 1954 and then a daughter, Karen Marie, in 1961. They were married for 64 years until Katie passed in August 2016.
Dave began his teaching career in Pasadena at McKinley Jr. High in 1952 and John Muir College in 1953. The following year, he joined the music faculty at Pasadena City College where he directed the choirs and taught conducting. In 1960, at age 33, he was asked to join the music department of the newly opened Orange County State College which eventually became California State University, Fullerton. Charged with building the choral program, Dave took the challenge seriously and continued to strengthen the department throughout his thirty-five years on the faculty. He conducted numerous all-state honor choirs, conducted lauded convention performances, and toured often with his choirs, both in the United States and in Europe. His efforts attracted talented singers from all over the world and expanded CSUF’s reputation as a tour de force in the choral world. Dave prepared the University Singers to perform Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2” in the final concert led by Zubin Mehta, outgoing conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1977. He also prepared them to perform Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony,” led by Carlo Maria Giulini in his first performance as incoming music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1978. Dave served as CSUF Music Department Chair (1981-1987) and led the choral department throughout his tenure before retiring in 1995. CSUF honored him by naming the choir rehearsal room Thorsen Hall.

Most summers were spent studying with well-known conductors such as Howard Swan, Julius Herford, Helmuth Rilling, and Robert Shaw to whom he was an assistant for four summers in San Diego. Other years involved organizing, teaching, and conducting at various music festivals. Dave spent fifteen summers at the Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene, five summers at the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart, Germany, and four at the Summer Arts Festival in Fairbanks, Alaska. In addition, he was Director of Music at several churches in the Pasadena area and in Orange County including Oneonta Congregational in South Pasadena, First Presbyterian in Pasadena, First Presbyterian in Fullerton, and First Presbyterian in Anaheim where he was Minister of Music for twelve years.
Dave served as past president of the American Choral Directors’ Association (ACDA), the National Association of Church Musicians, and was active on the board of the International Federation of Choral Music (IFCM) where his University Singers represented the US at the first “World Symposium of Choral Music” held in Vienna, Austria in 1987. He also served
as Vice-President of the Southern California Vocal Association, President of the Choral Conductors’ Guild of California, President of the National Association of Church Musicians, and was a member of California Music Educators’ Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Magic was a childhood hobby and Dave fostered this interest throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle) in Los Angeles upon its opening in 1963. After retirement, Dave returned to CSUF to teach magic classes in the Theater Department. Shortly after, Dave was invited to teach at the Magic Castle which he did for the next twenty years. He also performed onstage and when asked, “How did you do that?”, he would answer with a straight face, “Very well.” Dave is responsible for bringing in hundreds of new members from all over the world to the ‘Mecca of magicians’ during his many years of teaching there. He was also a member of the Society of American Magicians.
Dave filled his leisure time with myriad activities. He attended Sunday matinees with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, liked to read, and was a competitive game player. He favored card games like canasta, 3 to 13, and rummy tiles but was always up for a game of mahjong or dominoes. Another hobby was his love of painting with acrylic. Dave’s work was mostly abstract geometrics, known as hard edge painting, in the style of Kandinsky, Mondrian, and others. He enjoyed traveling to many European countries whether work related or on vacation. He was self-disciplined in exercise workouts throughout his life which included swimming, running, and going to the gym several days a week even into his nineties. Dave often spent quality time with his six grandchildren and supported them in their many activities by being there to cheer them on. He attended numerous basketball games, dance recitals, and plays. Moreover, he was always happy to entertain the grands as their chief babysitter when each was young. He was referred to as “magic grandpa.”
Thousands of former students of music and magic, church choir members, friends, and acquaintances throughout six decades had the privilege to experience the pleasure of working with and/or befriending David Thorsen. Dave was, by definition, a fine example of a Renaissance man, “A well-educated, charismatic gentleman, cultured in the arts.” Music was his life’s work and magic was his lifelong passion. It is fortunate for many that Dave had the knowledge and the skill to teach both. He was a born teacher and, because of that natural ability, those who knew him are all beneficiaries of his talents.
With his earthly work completed and surrounded by family, Dave passed gently, at age 94, on Sunday, October 10, 2021, in Fullerton where he had happily resided for fifty-seven years. He is survived by his son, Paul (Gail) of La Habra; his daughter, Karen McClung (William) of Fullerton; niece, Maren Killian of Portland, OR; six grandchildren, Alia Thorsen, Jericho Azizi (Komron), Ashley Robertson (Ryan), Micah McClung, Jason McClung, Katie Grace McClung; two great grandchildren, Jared and Elliana Robertson; and the many whose lives he touched.
Donations in Dave’s name can be made to the David Thorsen Choral Scholarship Fund College of the Arts, 2600 Nutwood Ave., Suite 850, Fullerton, CA 92831
