WELCOME TO THE COLLEGE OF THE AR TS First, I’d like to start off by saying something I have looked forward to saying for a very long time: “Welcome back!” Welcome back to live performances and in-person exhibitions; welcome back to the thrill of sitting in a darkened theatre or concert hall, waiting with palpable anticipation as performers fill the stage; and welcome back to the very personal experience of being in the presence of an artwork that moves you or challenges your expectations. We’ve missed you. While away from campus, our students continued to create, learn, rehearse, and perform – sometimes in the tiny boxes we’ve all grown accustomed to viewing from home – as they prepared for the moment they would once again feel stage lights shining on them. As you can imagine, they are more than ready to perform in front of a live audience! This season, we are offering both on-campus and live streaming options for many of our Department of Theatre & Dance and School of Music performances to accommodate a variety of patrons. With enhancements to our HVAC and air filtration systems, we are also able to provide students with the full breadth of our first-rate performance facilities and numerous art galleries where they perfect their craft daily. In returning to campus, we can once again deliver the full scope of immersive academic experiences and opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration that make our college a living laboratory for the arts. Here, success is measured in lines of dialogue, sheets of music, and slabs of clay as our students, faculty, and staff work together to present concerts, exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances to 40,000+ visitors annually. This would not be possible without the support of our community. ABOUT THE COMPOSER
PAMELA MADSEN Pamela Madsen is a composer, performer, theorist and curator of new music. From massive landscape inspired projects, intimate chamber music creations to multi-media opera collaborations and immersive deep listening works her work focuses on image, music, text and the environment. With a Ph.D. in Music Composition from UCSD, Mellon Foundation Doctoral Research Award at Yale University, Post-Doctoral researcher at IRCAM, Paris, and Deep Listening Certificate with Pauline Oliveros, her works have been commissioned and premiered world-wide by such ensembles as Los Angeles Percussion Quartet, Brightwork newmusic, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, Tony Arnold, Nicholas Isherwood, Stacey Fraser, Claire Chase, Jane Rigler, Anne LaBerge, Brian Walsh, Lisa Moore, Vicki Ray, Aron Kallay, Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo, Ashley Bathgate, Trio Solisti, New York New Music Ensemble, Either/Or, yesaroun’ duo, California Ear Unit, Verdehr Trio, Zeitgeist, JACK, Ethel, Lyris, Formalist and Arditti string quartets with multimedia collaborations with visual artists Quintan Ana Wikswo, Camille Seaman, Jimena Sarno and Judy Chicago. Selected as an Alpert Award Panelist, Creative Capital artist “on the radar” with awards from Opera America, National Endowment for the Arts, New Music USA, Meet the Composer, American Scandinavian Foundation, Fellowships from MacDowell, UCross, Women’s International Studies Center, Santa Fe, and Wurlitzer Foundation Residency, Taos, she is a frequent guest lecturer, composer-performer-improviser and at festivals and universities. ABOUT HEX Joslyn Sarshad, soprano Molly Pease, soprano Lindsay Patterson Abdou, alto Fahad Siadat, tenor, director Scott Graff, baritone James Hayden, baritone Andrew Anderson, piano HEX is a contemporary vocal sextet based in Los Angeles interested in performing works that reimagine the expressive potential of the human voice and reframing the human voice in interesting ways. Our group features singers who have performed with LA Opera, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, LA Choral Lab, The Industry, C3LA: The Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles, and Tonality; and have interests as wide as Renaissance madrigals to microtonal singing. HEX has performed with Brightwork Newmusic, theatre dybbuk, and the Resonance Collective, and at venues such as Tuesdays@Monk Space, HEAR NOW Music Festival, Sound and Fury Concert Series, Master in the Chapel Series at First Lutheran Church in Venice, and N.E.O. Voice Festival. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
FAHAD SIADAT Fahad Siadat creates interdisciplinary storytelling works, folding together words, sound, and movement into ritualistic narratives. His work is described by the press as “Exceptional” (LA Times), “hypnotic” (Backstage) and having “a sophisticated harmonic vocabulary” (San Diego Story) with “characteristic vivaciousness” (Theatre Scene). Fahad is the director of the Resonance Collective, a multifaceted organization which explores the intersections of artistic and spiritual practice, as well as the new music vocal ensemble HEX. As a music director he has worked with such groups as Long Beach Opera, Rosanna Gamson/ World Wide, and Overtone Industries. In 2012, he founded See-A-Dot Music Publishing, a company devoted to the advocacy of adventurous choral music. JAMES HAYDEN James Hayden prefers his operatic arias declaimed atop a penny-farthing bicycle (LA Phil’s Europeras) and his renaissance polyphony memorized and fully choreographed (Los Angeles Master Chorale’s Lagrime di San Pietro). You may have already heard his voice on a screen near you, appearing on soundtracks for The Book of Boba Fett, Call of Duty: Cold War, Minions, and more. When not being “languorously sexy” or “a weird, looming presence” on the operatic stage, he performs with the new-music vocal sextet Hex, is a voice actor with Sony Pictures Television, and writes award winning pop a cappella charts for ensembles across the U.S. You can hear his throat noises at www.jamesroberthayden.com

KIMO FURUMOTO Kimo Furumoto is the Orchestra Director at California State University, Fullerton. He is also Music Director and Conductor of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra (West Virginia) as well as the Whittier Regional Symphony. His guest conducting appearances have taken him throughout the United States and Europe with many stellar orchestras. Previous positions include music director of the Concert Orchestra at the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music, conducting assistant with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. He has worked with noted conductors suchas Leonard Bernstein and Robert Shaw. Furumoto holds degrees in conducting from Chapman University and the University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music. His ballet “The Mandarin Ducks” has been enthusiastically received by audiences.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
ROBERT ISTAD Robert Istad is Artistic Director of Pacific Chorale and Director of Choral Studies at California State University, Fullerton. He regularly conducts and collaborates with Pacific Chorale, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Sony Classical Records, Yarlung Records, Berkshire Choral International, and Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. He is also Dean of Chorus America’s national Academy for Conductors. Istad has prepared choruses for a number of America’s finest conductors and orchestras, including: Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Carl St.Clair and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, as well as conductors Esa–Pekka Salonen, Keith Lockhart, and Nicholas McGegan. Istad is also Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies at California State University, Fullerton. He was recognized as CSUF’s 2016 Outstanding Professor of the Year. At CSU Fullerton, he conducts the University Singers and Titan Voices in addition to teaching courses in conducting, performance practice and literature. He and the University Singers have performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony Orchestra, Andrea Bocelli, Kathleen Battle, recorded albums with Yarlung Records and with composer John Williams and Sony Classical. Istad and his singers performed a concert of Tarik O’Regan’s music for Distinguished Concerts International New York at Carnegie Hall in November 2015. They have performed at numerous regional and national ACDA conferences including the 2018 ACDA Western Division Conference. He and the CSUF University Singers have performed all over the world, including a 2017 performance in Russia’s famous Glinka Cappella, a 2015 residency and performances in Paris, France, engagements at the 2012 Ottobeuren Festival of Music in Germany, the 2012 Eingen Festival of music in Germany, a 2010 performance for UNESCO in Pisa, Italy, and in 2008 at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Istad received his Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, his Master of Music degree in choral conducting from California State University, Fullerton, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral music at the University of Southern California. He studied conducting with Dr. William Dehning, John Alexander, and Dr. Jon Hurty. Istad is Vice-President of the California Choral Director’s Association, and is in demand as an adjudicator, guest conductor, speaker, and clinician throughout the nation.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
CHRISTOPHER PETERSON Christopher Peterson is a teacher, conductor, choral clinician, author, editor, and choral arranger of music and books published in the United States and around the world. In his over thirty years as a music educator he has taught in elementary, middle school, high school, church, community, festival, and collegiate settings. He earned the Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the University of Southern Maine in choral and instrumental music education and taught music for nine years in the public schools of Maine. He earned the Master of Music in Choral Conducting degree at the University of Maine, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education and Choral Conducting at Florida State University. At CSUF Peterson trains and mentors undergraduate and graduate choral music educators and conductors and directs the Concert Choir and the Singing Titans Chorus. In May of 2019 he was honored as the University-wide recipient of the CSUF Carol Barnes Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has served as State Choral Representative and Southern Section President for the California Music Educators Association (CMEA), as well as the Western Division Representative for the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) Council for Choral Education. He has also served the California Choral Directors Association in various offices, including CCDA President since 2021. His collegiate textbook “RESONANCE: The ART of the Choral Music Educator” is published by Pavane and is being used across the United States to train future choral music teachers and conductors. Peterson has been invited to teach, judge, and conduct choirs in more than thirty US states, five Canadian Provinces, and nine countries including China, England, Sweden, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, and Holland, and has conducted All-State Choirs across the nation including Maine, North Carolina, Oregon, Wisconsin, and California. Peterson also holds the position of Director of Music at Irvine United Congregational Church in Irvine, CA. His “hobby” for many decades has been enjoying singing barbershop harmony, and he is a BHS District Quartet Champion baritone, a top-5 medalist chorus director, and a four-time gold medalist with the Masters of Harmony, nine-time International Men’s Chorus Champions of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
