Greetings from the College of the Arts! It’s so good to have you back, and we have an exceptional spring season planned for you. With programming ranging from groundbreaking theatre productions to World-Premiere concerts, our spring offerings seem to shine a bit brighter this semester. On January 28, we kicked things off with the Visual Arts Modernization Project Preview Event and groundbreaking ceremony. More than 100 invited guests joined us for a sneak peek of the project as they engaged with some of the latest technology-driven art tools, experienced AR/VR project demonstrations by visual arts students, and viewed scale models of the complex. When completed, this renovation will transform our campus and community, positioning CSUF’s visual arts program – the largest in the Cal State system – as a leader in cutting-edge art education and practice within the CSUs. This season’s fresh slate of visual arts exhibitions and performing arts concerts and productions are sure to keep you coming back to campus! Beginning February 18, Begovich Gallery presents the exhibition “Figures, Poses, and Glances: The Coded Illustrations of J.C Leyendecker,” at MUZEO Museum & Cultural Center, exploring the coded depictions of queer culture in the eradefining images of this early twentieth-century American illustrator. The School of Music honors Black History Month with a performance of “Symphony No. 1 in E minor” by composer Florence Price – the first Black female composer to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. In Theatre, Maria Cominis’ “Women of Zalongo” weaves together the experiences of four generations of Greek women into a story of resilience, struggle, and survival. And in May, our student dancers and choreographers collaborate in rhythmic, expressive movement as “Spring Dance Theatre” returns to the Little Theatre.

Our diverse programming mirrors the diversity of the College of the Arts and is a testament to the values we hold. We embrace the possibility inherent in each of our students and celebrate their successes alongside them on their path to becoming future artists, educators, performers, and arts professionals. HAL GROSSMAN

Violinist Hal Grossman has been hailed by critics for his "tremendous virtuosic technique" and "outstanding artistic sense." As concerto soloist, he has appeared with American, European and Canadian orchestras including the Rochester Philharmonic, the North Carolina Symphony, Polish Sinfonietta, the Illinois, Lima, Guelph and Battle Creek symphonies. Grand Award Winner of the Lima Young Artist Competition and Silver Medalist of the International Stulberg Competition, he also received First Prize Awards at the prestigious International Cleveland Quartet Competition and the National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. He has performed for their Royal Highnesses, Prince Charles and Princess Diana and his New York Debut at Carnegie Hall received exceptional reviews from the New York Times. Recital appearances have taken him throughout North America and Europe. In the United States he has also been heard on National Public Radio, WQXI-New York, and WFMT-Chicago.

Grossman has served as Concertmaster of the Echternach Festival Orchestra in Luxembourg, the lllinois, Boise, Lansing, Kentucky and Saginaw Bay symphonies. He has been featured at the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Evian (France), Orfeo (Italy), Aspen, Lancaster, Breckenridge, Fontana, Great Lakes, Manitou, and Garth Newel music festivals. As First Violinist of the Oxford String Quartet, he performed throughout the United States and Europe and recorded several new works for string quartet.

Grossman is the founder and creator of The Grossman Method©, a course of study addressing musician’s health issues. The Method is a unique teaching system that addresses musicians’ health and performance issues within the applied lesson structure. Including a confluence of Yoga, Feldenkrais Method and Alexander Technique, The Grossman Method has an international presence and has been used by leading performing artists. The Grossman Method was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in String Pedagogy by the American String Teachers Association in 2018.

Grossman holds music performance degrees from the University of Michigan and the Eastman School of Music. His primary studies were with Paul Makanowitzky and Sylvia Rosenberg and, in master class, with Isaac Stern, Alexander Schneider, and Charles Treger. He is Associate Professor of Violin at The University of Oregon, Artistic Director of the Northwest Music Retreat, and he is on the violin faculties at the Aria International Summer Academy and the Marrowstone Music Festival. He was formerly on the violin faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Miami University, and University of Oklahoma. His students can be found in the New York Philharmonic, National Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Louisville Orchestra and in every major music conservatory in the nation including Curtis, Juilliard, New England, and San Francisco.

ERNEST SALEM

Violinist Ernest Salem is currently Professor of Music at California State University, Fullerton. He has performed in concerts and recitals across the United States and presented master classes at various universities, colleges and arts schools. Former university affiliations include appointments as a faculty member at Wichita State University, the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and New Mexico State University.

Active as a freelance musician in the Los Angeles Area, Salem has performed with the Los Angeles Master Chorale Orchestra, Los Angeles Mozart Orchestra, Long Beach Symphony, Asia American Orchestra and South Coast Symphony. Formerly Concertmaster of the Wichita and Las Cruces Symphonies, he has also served as Principal Second of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra and Assistant Concertmaster of the Texas Chamber and Texas Opera Theater Orchestras.

As a chamber musician, Salem has been violinist with California State University, Fullerton’s Premiere Trio, first violinist with Wichita State’s Fairmount Quartet, a member of the College of St. Benedict’s Chamber Ensemble “Pastiche,” and violinist with New Mexico State’s Delphian Trio. He currently performs regularly as a chamber musician throughout Southern California.

Salem holds degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Houston and the University of Minnesota. Included among his teachers are Yfrah Neaman, Fredell Lack, and members of the Juilliard Quartet. In addition to performance activities, he has been published in the American String Teachers’ Journal and the Long Island Historical Journal.
