OLLI Classes

What is OLLI?

Both “free and open to the public” and “membership-only” classes are offered. This brochure lists OLLI’s “free” classes. Membership-only classes and activities are described in our Spring Course Catalog, which is available at no charge by contacting us at 657-278-2446 or emailing olli-info@fullerton.edu.

Lifelong learning for retired and semi-retired persons at Cal State Fullerton. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at CSUF is one of 117 university-based programs in the United States. Each OLLI reflects the culture of its own university and OLLI’s learning community. OLLI-CSUF is one of the largest and best-known OLLIs with a diverse curriculum and extensive membership benefits. Lifelong learners at CSUF spearheaded the fund raising and supervised the on campus construction of the CSUF Ruby Gerontology Center where Celebrating more than 95 percent of OLLI’s classes are A C O M M U N I TY OF LEAR N ER S offered.

Membership fees are: • Spring 2016 and Summer 2016 semesters: $185 • Spring 2016 semester: $140 • Summer semester only: $85 Some classes and activities have nominal charges for materials, or equipment replacement or special event or trip transportation/ admission expenses. Semester fees for new members joining midway through a semester are pro-rated.

Transitions in Retirement OLLI’s Transitions in Retirement (TIR) program provides a series of classes for persons transitioning into retirement. These courses are conveniently scheduled on late afternoons and weekends.

Directional Signage New campus signage at CSUF entrances and along the major access roads within the campus directs vehicles to major campus facilities, including the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC) that houses OLLI. Primary access to OLLI is via either Gymnasium (Gym) Dr. or Folino Dr.

Campus Access 1) If entering the campus from Yorba Linda Boulevard, turn south on Associated Drive (entrance #10) and turn left on East Campus Drive around the Arboretum and the student housing complex to Gymnasium Drive, then right to Lot J. 2) If entering from State College Boulevard, turn east onto Gymnasium Drive (entrance #6). When the road curves to the right (at the back of the RGC building), follow the road around to the front, making a left into Lot J. 3) If entering from Nutwood (taking the Nutwood exit off the 57 Fwy.), go west on Nutwood Ave. and turn north on Folino Drive (entrance #1). Make an immediate right after passing the Marriott Hotel. Go around the easternmost side of the parking structure and north to East Campus Drive until you reach Gymnasium Drive. Turn left on Gymnasium Drive until you reach Lot J on the right.

Each semester’s classes include study groups, educational lectures, discussion groups, computer education, physical activities, special events and social activities. OVERVIEW OF CURRICULUM

• Visit olli.fullerton.edu and click on the tab under “Forms” labeled “View Current Catalog” to view the current catalog.

Parking Weekdays: A CSUF daily parking pass ($8) is required on campus Monday-Thursday. On Friday, a parking permit is required until 5:00 p.m. Parking is free on Saturday and Sunday. Short-term, 30-minute parking spaces are available on Gymnasium Drive near the RGC (see map). Visit http://parking.fullerton.edu for maps and more information or call 657.278.3082. (Note: OLLI membership includes a campus parking pass—a $229 per semester value—at no additional cost to members.)

Off-Campus Wednesday and Thursday Medical Series: Free parking is available at off-campus sites.

• Pick up a copy listing 150 course titles in the OLLI office in Room 7 of the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC in map on back of this brochure).

Saturday Classes: Parking is free. Lot J is the exclusive OLLI parking lot immediately east of the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC). If using www.mapquest.com or a navigation device, use 800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton as the address.

Membership Benefits

OLLI Trolley: The free OLLI Trolley travels between the OLLI Trolley Stop and the RGC during morning and afternoon hours on Monday-Thursday when OLLI classes are scheduled. The covered Trolley Stop is located near the southeast corner of Lot G.

March 26 – Hearing Problems: What You Need to Know An audiologist will discuss how the ear works, how to protect the hearing you have left and which hearing aid is right for you.

January 23 - Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment of Skin Cancer A dermatologist specializing in the diagnosis and newest treatment modalities will discuss both treatment and prevention of skin cancer.

April 9 – Basic First Aid Training This class is designed to prepare you for those unforeseen accidents, illnesses, or environmental emergencies and what you can do to help others before paramedics arrive.

January 30 - Identity Theft and Fraud A police officer will discuss identity theft, how it happens, how to prevent it, how to detect it and what to do if you are a victim. February 6 - Prevention and Treatment of Degenerative Arthritis A rheumatologist will present the latest developments in the treatment (medical and surgical) of osteoarthritis.

February 20 - Estate Planning – Probate and How to Avoid It An estate attorney will discuss the pros and cons of probate and options to avoid probate such as a revocable living trust.

April 9 - Billie Holiday and George Shearing

February 27 - Cleaning Out the Clutter and Hoarding Learn the warning signs of hoarding behavior, dangers of excessive clutter and differences of collecting, clutter and hoarding behavior. March 5 - Joint Replacement An orthopedist experienced in the newest and least invasive techniques involved in the area of hip, knee and shoulder joint replacement will show the newest procedures and who needs them. March 12 - Retirement Income and Preparing for a Rise in Interest Rates A certified financial planner will discuss how much you’ll need to save, ways to help you generate retirement income and preparing for rising interest rates. March 19 - Navigating the World of Genealogy This class offers an introduction to the search process for family records by providing an overview of many aspects of genealogy.
