BACKFOR AFTER A SUCCESSFUL RUN IN THE BIG WEST IN 2009, THE MATADORS RETURN WITH THEIR SIGHTS SET ON BIGGER TARGETS IN 2010. BY GEOFF HERBERG FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A FEW SEASONS, seniority reigns supreme with the Cal State Northridge women’s soccer program. On a squad that finished second and hosted its first-ever home playoff game a year ago, Matador head coach Keith West and 15 players entering at least their third season with the team know that their familiarity may lead to some unfamiliar and championship territory. “We’re hungry to start things in 2010 with a squad that know each other well, likes playing with each other and has had a taste of success and wants more,” West said. “With the addition of the lights to Matador Soccer Field, I believe we will display an engaging, exciting brand of soccer that will generate new levels of success.”
FORWARDS At the top of the Matador attack is a pair of homonymous forwards whom will be counted upon to sustain their all-league form. In Farryn Townley and Heidi Farran, Northridge showcases a talent-

ed duo whose ardent chemistry resulted in 13 goals and 29 points in 2009. Entering her senior season, Townley is poised to take hold of several Northridge records. She tied a school record in 2009 with nine goals, giving her 15 for her career and leaving five shy of a new school mark. Her 20-point season in 2009 was the thirdbest ever in single calendar year at Northridge, moving her to 33 points for her career and just 13 shy of setting a new mark. Townley added to that five game-winning goals, four of which came against Big West opponents. For her work, she earned All-Big West First Team honors and is primed to maintain her status as one of the league’s premier executioners. Her partner in crime, Farran exploded for four goals and nine points in her sophomore season in 2009. The San Pedro, Calif., native recorded the game-winning goals against UC Irvine and Long Beach State to spur CSUN to it best conference finish in program history.

BACKFORMORE Waiting in reserve for West and the Matadors are several upcoming talents itching to net their first career goals. Melissa Fernandez and Marisa Miller enter their second full season with Matadors, having amassed 48 career appearances and one career assist in a Northridge uniform.
MIDFIELDERS The second level of the Matador eleven, the midfield carries a strong list of responsibilities for the success of Northridge in 2010. Led by a pair of seniors, Sonia Espitia and Erin Kelly, CSUN will also feature the exploits of several younger players looking to leave an imprint on the opposition. On the wing, Espitia enters her final season at Northridge fresh off an All-Big West Second Team campaign in 2009. Her junior season saw her collect a career-high six points and her first two career goals. She provides the Matadors with unbridled
impact after transferring before her junior season, collecting six points and two goals while playing position throughout the field. On the wing, Slepicoff may be one of the league’s fastest players and earned All-Big West Honorable Mention honors in 2009. She had two assists in her sophomore season to give her five career helpers and one goal in her two seasons with the Matadors. Russ enters her second season with CSUN after proving to be one of West’s most reliable fixtures. She started every game in 2009, recording an assist against Long Beach State, from her center back position. Russ also came through in a tight spot for Northridge in 2009, assuming goaltending responsibilities after the first two keepers left due to injury in the Matadors’ victory over Cal Poly. Because of the versatility of Cardenas and Pratt, who are capable of moving up to the midfield, West has a quality stable
“WE’RE HUNGRY TO START THINGS IN 2010 WITH A SQUAD THAT KNOW EACH OTHER WELL, LIKES PLAYING WITH EACH OTHER AND HAS HAD A TASTE OF SUCCESS AND WANTS MORE.”
– KEITH WEST
speed and a prowess for the big play. In the middle, Kelly looks to regain some of the form she displayed in 2009 after an injury-shortened 2010. An aggressive offensive player, Kelly carries in three career points to her senior season, having appeared in 42 contests. Due to graduation, the other midfield positions will represent opportunities for several emerging talents on the Matadors. Of Alexis Barbará, Marie Hirsch, Katie Coulas, Amanda Smith and Stephanie Galarze, West has an array of unique talents to assail the opposition. In their two seasons at CSUN, Coulas and Cruz have shown an inherent ability in the defensive midfield. The two have combined for five starts and one goal in 62 career appearances. They will be counted upon to control the defensive center of the Matador attack, and will probably also be joined by redshirt freshman Haley Chee in the fight for playing time. On the wings, Barbará, Hirsch, and Galarze all saw extended time on the pitch in 2009. Hirsch was the only one to register a point, recording an assist on Espitia’s goal at San Diego State. Still, with another year under their belts, West expects the trio to increase their productivity and provide the Matadors with extensive offensive opportunities in 2010.
DEFENDERS The strength of the Matadors in seasons past, 2010 looks to be no different along the defensive backline. Northridge returns a host of seasoned and successful talents who started a majority of contests in 2009. Seniors Jasmine Pratt and Desiree Cardenas join junior Brielle Slepicoff and sophomore Katie Russ to form a formidable unit in repelling offensive attacks. Pratt and Cardenas enter their final season at Northridge with ample experience and a knack for timely contributions on the offensive end. Pratt recorded the first two assists of her career in 2009 and is on pace to finish her CSUN career with the most appearances in school history. Cardenas made an immediate

of younger players ready to assume defensive roles. Stephanie Norton, Jocelyn Coney and Emily Geckle all saw time on the outside in 2009 and bring in 15 career appearances. Additionally, redshirt freshman Chloe McDaniel will be joined by a series of newcomers who expect to compete for playing time from their arrival on campus.
GOALKEEPER The last line of defense, the Matadors return one the conference’s top goalkeepers in Cynthia Jacobo. The Big West Conference Freshman of the Year and an All-Big West Second Team selection in 2009, Jacobo put together quite a show in 2009 that West believe will only get better in 2010. After injuries decimated the position, stripping the team of two upperclassmen keepers, Jacobo took over the position in an overtime road shutout at UC Davis. That clean sheet would be just the start of an amazing streak that saw her produce fivestraight Big West shutouts and amass a streak of nearly 550 minutes of scoreless goalkeeping. Also returning between the pipes for CSUN is sophomore Haylee Hawes. In 2009, Hawes started a pair of Big West matches and brings ample experience to increase the competition level at the position. Incoming freshman Dominique Oro will inherit the third-string responsibilities and probably take a redshirt unless calamity strikes for a second-straight year. As 2009 proved, anything is possible.
CONCLUSION The skeptic will tell you that catching lightning in a bottle twice is a task that is tough enough the first time around. Yet, West does not share the belief that last year was some sort of aberration for the Matadors. In returning a large part of the success from 2009, Northridge is amped to create its own sparks through a team with formidable chemistry and a yearning to reach even greater heights in 2010.
2009 IN REVIEW The Cal State Northridge women's soccer program enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in school history, ending the year with the second-best record in the Big West Conference at 6-2 and an overall record of 10-10. With a young but talented roster, the Matadors achieved new highs in 2009, culminating in the program's first home playoff game in school history. Picked to finish fifth in the Big West Conference Head Coaches' Preseason Poll, fourth-year Head Coach Keith West would lead a roster of only three seniors into a season filled with exciting highs, new school records, outstanding performances and unforgettable victories. The Matadors truly made their mark in Big West Conference play during the 2010 season, posting a 6-2 record. Sparking CSUN to that record were a group of standouts who would receive All-Big West accolades following the season: Farryn Townley (First Team), Cynthia Jacobo (Freshman of the Year; Second Team), Katie Fox (Second Team), Sonia Espitia (Second Team), Brielle Slepicoff (Honorable Mention) and Heidi Farran (Honorable Mention). Townley tied a school record with nine goal on the year, producing five game-winning strike in the process. Her 20 points for the year was the third-best single season performance in the school’s history. Jacobo came on as a revelation after injuries devastated the goalkeeper position. After juniors Kellie Drenner and Leah Elliott went down with injuries, Jacobo gave up her redshirt season to assume the posts for CSUN. She posted a 5-1 record for the year and won her first five matches, all against league opponents, by shutout. Her 0.30 goals-against-average for the year stands as the best in school history. She became the first Matador in the program’s history to receive her league’s rookie award. Fox and Slepicoff anchored a stout defense that certainly contributed to the team’s shutout streak in Big West play. Espitia finished the season with a career-high six points courtesey of two goals and two assists and Farran scored four goals on the year, including two game-winning tallies against conference foes. The six all-league selections tied a school record and it was the first time in school history that two of the league’s major awards went to Matadors. Other individual standouts included Niki Connolly, who scored three goals, including the game winner at Cal State Fullerton. Another player in her first season with the program, Desiree Cardenas, added two goals, two assists and six points. Finally, seniors Kelley Ross and Sydney Vermillion combined for four assists during their final season with the Matadors. In addition to the individual player awards, West collected the 2009 Big West Coach of the Year honors for leading the squad to new heights in 2010. Among the Matadors’ notable victories were wins over Cal Poly, San Diego State, LMU, UC Davis and UC Irvine. Northridge also posted a perfect 3-1 mark in Big West play on the road. The 6-2 mark, capped off by a 1-0 victory over Long Beach State on senior day, sent the Matadors into the Big West playoffs and the first home playoff game in school history. Although the Matadors dropped the match 2-1 to UC Santa Barbara, the performance set the stage for an exciting 2010 season.

The 2009 campaign represented one of the most accomplished seasons in Matador history. With West at the helm, the Matadors posted a 10-10 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Big West. By finishing second in the league standings, Northridge hosted its first playoff game in school history, a 2-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 5. Individually, West saw six Matadors honored by the league coaches, including First Team honors for Farryn Townley and Big West Freshman of the Year honors for Cynthia Jacobo. For his work in the historic season, West was named the 2009 Big West Coach of the Year. The Matadors finished 8-9-2 in the 2008 season, including a 3-4-1 record against Big West opponents. Northridge started the campaign with a school-record four-straight victories. CSUN also recorded the 100th victory in the program’s history with a 2-0 defeat of UC Davis on Oct. 17. In all, 11 different players scored goals for CSUN during the year and seniors Tryna Tafoya and Nalena Betancourt received All-Big West honors following the season. In 2007, West’s Matadors finished 5-10-3 overall, but 3-1-2 over their last six games and 2-4-2 against Big West Conference opponents, including a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara. The victory over the Gauchos was CSUN’s first since 2001. Following the season, seniors Susie Mischenko and Kristy Krohn earned All-Big West honors, with Mischenko receiving All-Big West First Team recognition for the second-consecutive season. In his first season as the head coach, West guided the Matadors to a 10-9-0 overall record and a fifth-place finish in the Big West Conference in 2006. West had two players receive All-Big West honors, as Susie Mischenko earned first team accolades and Sara Davis was named honorable mention. West was named head coach on Mar. 14, 2006, becoming the fifth head coach in the history of the program. West previously worked with the women’s team for two years as an assistant under Terry Davila and helped guide the Matadors to a pair of double-digit win totals. In 2004, Northridge equaled school records in wins (12) and conference victories (6) in earning its

first trip to the Big West Tournament. In 2005, the Matadors posted an 11-8-0 record, setting a school mark with a nine-match win streak in tying for fourth in one of the toughest conference’s in the nation. West has been a part of the Cal State Northridge soccer coaching staff since 1999 when he was an assistant on the men’s team. His coaching days began in 1996 when he served as a graduated assistant on coach Marwan Ass’ad’s staff. As the men’s defensive coach for seven seasons, West helped the Matadors to four straight trips (2002-05) to the NCAA Division I Tournament thanks to a defense that has been ranked as one of the nation's toughest over the last four seasons. Northridge finished with a goals against average of 0.88 last season and posted 11 shutouts. Three Matador defenders earned All-Big West Conference honors, with Sean Franklin earning first-team honors, Matt Tracy receiving second-team accolades and Derek Hanks being named to the honorable mention team. A total of 10 Northridge defenders were named all-conference from 2002-05, including back-to-back Big West Defensive Player of the Year Edwin Miranda. West spent seven years as the assistant coach of Harvard-Westlake High School's varsity girls' soccer team. In addition, he served as the head coach of the boys' Valley United Soccer Club for four years and the girls' Valley United Soccer Club for one season. West also coached the West Valley Samba squad that won the Dallas Cup tournament in 2002. Much of West's success as a coach comes from lessons learned on the field as a threeyear letterman with the Matadors from 1993-95. He led the western region and finished third in the nation in scoring as a senior after collecting an amazing 20 goals and 49 total points. In addition to his Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year award, West garnered second team All-Far West Region honors in 1995. Recently, West was named to the MPSF 15th Anniversary Team. West, who graduated from CSUN in the spring of 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Finance/Real Estate, was born on Feb. 5, 1973 and currently resides in Granada Hills. He and his wife, Eva, welcomed their first son, Cameron Anders, into the world on Jan. 21, 2009. ■

OOPPONENTS THE BIG WEST CONFERENCE NORTHRIDGE WOMEN'S SOCCER begins its 11th season in the Big West Conference in 2010 after finishing second last year in the nineteam league. The Matadors had six players named to the allleague team, including the Big West Freshman of the Year (Cynthia Jacobo) and Coach of the Year (Keith West). CSUN also hosted the first home playoff in school history following a league season that saw the Matadors finish 6-2. Since the 2005 season, Northridge has placed 15 studentathletes on the All-Big West Team and the six student-athletes selected to the 2010 edition tied a school record. In February 2002, the Big West Conference Council approved the addition of women’s soccer as a

Its six charter members were Cal State Los Angeles, Fresno State, Long Beach State, San Diego State, San Jose State and UC Santa Barbara. The conference's previous 39 years have been characterized by expansion and change. The original PCAA lineup changed in the early years and by 1975, charter members UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Los Angeles had dropped football and San Diego State bolted the conference in football only. In 1974, Cal State Fullerton moved into the conference. By 1977, UC Irvine joined the

With the inclusion of the states of Utah, Nevada and New Mexico into the loop, the term "Big West" more accurately represented the conference. In 1992, Fresno State left the Big West, with San Jose State and UNLV leaving four years later. Entering that same year were Boise State, Cal Poly and Idaho. Boise State would leave in 2001, one year after the departures of Nevada and New Mexico. The Big West Conference enters its 40th season as a conference and the 21st year of being known as the Big West since changing its name from the Pacific Coast Athletic Association prior to the 1988 football season. The conference has undertaken a new look over the past years. Nevada-Las Vegas (1981) and New Mexico State (1984) soon followed suit, bringing the league's membership to 10 universities. In the fall of 1983, the PCAA became the first western conference to incorporate women's athletic programs into the conference. Charter women's members UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UNLV competed in five championships. DR. JOLENE KOESTER
University President Dr. Jolene Koester began her appointment as the fourth president of California State University, Northridge on July 1, 2000. At the time of her appointment, Koester had been serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, a post she had held since 1993. Prior to her appointment as provost, she served in other executive positions in the academic affairs division at CSU Sacramento. She has been a faculty member since 1980. She earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota, an M.A. in communication arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. in speech communication from Minnesota. The author of several scholarly books and articles on intercultural and interpersonal communication and a former Fulbright Scholar, Koester has served on systemwide committees on Cornerstones (the California State University’s systemwide strategic plan), budget and accountability, and teacher preparation. The Minnesota native chaired CSU Sacramento’s NCAA accreditation study and was president of the Western States Communication Association. In 1998, Cal State Northridge celebrated its 40th anniversary as the only public university located in
Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, home to about 1.7 million residents. Founded in 1958, the university has grown to include the 353-acre Northridge campus with over 34,000 diverse students and more than 3,800 employees. The university is one of the largest in the 23-campus California State University system. Cal State Northridge offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in more than 50 different majors.
RICK MAZZUTO
Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto was named Cal State Northridge Athletic Director on August 3, 2006, becoming the seventh athletic director in the Matadors’ 48year history. Mazzuto comes to Northridge from Longwood University in Farmville, Va., where he served as athletic director since 2002. He has led the Lancers in the school’s transition from Division II to Division I, which began in March 2002. At Longwood, Mazzuto guided the program through many changes, including increases in operating budgets, scholarships and department personnel, while also overseeing scheduling, fundraising and marketing. Additionally, Mazzuto was instrumental in developing a comprehensive master plan for new athletic facilities and the complete renovation of some existing facilities.
NORTHRIDGE MATADORS 48 2010 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE
Prior to his days at Longwood, Mazzuto was the athletic director at Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif. from 1989 to 2000. He oversaw a $5-million budget and 16sport athletic program while with the Gaels. During his time at SMC, the Gaels made three trips to the NCAA Tournament with their 1992 women’s soccer, 1997 men’s basketball and 1999 women’s basketball squads. Mazzuto began his athletic director career at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where he managed the Gaels’ 20-sport program. While there, Iona participated in two NCAA Tournaments and National Invitational Tournaments in men’s basketball, as the school won a combined 13 conference championships. Mazzuto started at Iona in 1977, working for three years as the institution’s associate athletic director. Mazzuto has served on numerous committees during his career, including the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee from 1991 to 1997. He also has extensive community service activities, serving on the Board of Directors of both the Moraga and New Rochelle Rotary Clubs. Mazzuto earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where he began his career in intercollegiate athletics as the school’s sports information director for two years. He also served as SID at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. for four years, and was the publicity director for the East Coast Conference for two years. Mazzuto is married to the former Janet Johnstone.

THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY Northridge Sports Medicine staff is charged with the responsibility of providing the highest quality medical care to the more than 400 student-athletes that participate in 20 intercollegiate athletic teams in the most efficient manner possible. This responsibility includes administering to the health and welfare of the student-athlete on a daily basis and measuring their readiness for athletic competition. In conjunction with the Addie Koltz Student Health Center, the sports medicine staff provides daily services in the prevention, immediate care and management of athletic injuries and illnesses. Thanks to a generous donation from the Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center and its parent company, Tenet Foundation, it was possible for the 2,500 square-foot Athletic Training Center to be built. The Center opened in September, 2000, and almost quadrupled the size of the old facility. The Sports Medicine staff
includes the certified athletic trainers, athletic training students, team physicians and a wide variety of medial specialists. Director of Sports Medicine, Steven Grech, is joined by assistant athletic trainers Sarah Lyons, Erick Buitrago, Dunford Rodill and Brittany Beckwith. Northridge’s doctors include Orthopedists Dr. Domenick Sisto and Dr. Brett Leake, as well as sports medicine physicians Dr. Eric Sletten and Dr. James Ting. Aimie Kachingwe, PT and Ira Schneider, DC provide physical therapy and chiropractic services, respectively. The Athletic Training Center is located in Redwood Hall and features electronic therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation equipment, and a physician’s exam room. Redwood Hall also houses Northridge’s strength and conditioning room. Headed by coach Daniel Kohn, the strength and conditioning room contains a wide array of weightlifting and exercise equipment for all of the studentathlete’s needs. ■

N NORTHRIDGE THIS IS CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY? California State University, Northridge exists to help students realize their educational goals. The University's first priority is to promote the welfare and intellectual progress of students. Part of the 23-campus California State University system, Cal State Northridge is the only public university located in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley (If incorporated, the area with 1.7 million residents would be the fifth largest city in the United States). Northridge celebrated its 40th anniversary in 199899, having educated more than 165,000 alumni. The main Northridge campus covers 356 acres and has about four million square feet of facilities, including about two dozen major buildings and more than 100 in total. Campus physical assets are valued at more than $613 million. The physical heart of the campus is the Oviatt Library with more than one million volumes. Cal State Northridge also operates a satellite campus in adjoining Ventura County. Cal State Northridge, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, is one of the largest higher education institutions in California and is the third-largest public university (2005 enrollment) in L.A. County after UCLA and Long Beach State. CSUN enrolls just over 33,000 students in Fall 2003, with about 1,900 faculty and a staff of nearly 2,100.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE HISTORY In fall 1956, the San Fernando Valley campus of the Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences (later Cal State Los Angeles) was established on the present Northridge site. Soon after, the state Legislature passed Assembly Bill 971, which provided for the campus to separate from its parent college. On July 1, 1958, the founding date of the present university, the institution became San Fernando Valley State College, with about 3,300 students and 104 faculty. On June 1, 1972, the college was renamed California State University, Northridge, by action of the state Legislature and the Board of Trustees of the California State University.
NORTHRIDGE NOTABLES ➤ CSUN is headed toward becoming one of the most modern university campuses in the country. Six new buildings worth more than $70 million each with
state-of-the-art facilities have finished or are under construction, including new wings for the Oviatt Library and a new Arts, Media and Communication Building. Renovations have also just been completed to the University Student Union. ➤ Cal State Northridge has small average class sizes, ranging from about 29 for lecture sections and 19 for laboratory sections. In the recent student survey, small class size was one of the campus' features most appreciated by students, with 84 percent indicating satisfaction.
