JIM BRACKEN MEN’S GOLF HEAD COACH // 25TH SEASON // CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE, 1980
JIM BRACKEN RECENTLY COMPLETED HIS 25TH SEASON AS THE HEAD coach of the Cal State Northridge men’s golf team in 2010-11. This season, the Matadors posted five top-five finishes including a third-place finish at the Big West Championship, their best finish at the conference championship since also placing third in 2008. The Matadors also finished third at their own Bill Cullum Invitational in late October. Individually, senior Nick Delio qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the third consecutive season, finishing 11th at The Farms G.C. in Rancho Santa Fe. Delio concluded his Matador career as the top scoring player in school history. In 10 seasons in the Big West Conference, Bracken has led the Matadors to a trio of third-place finishes (2004, 2008, 2011) and Northridge was also fourth in 2006. Bracken led the Matadors to their only Division I conference championship, when Northridge won the Big Sky Conference title in 2000 by finishing with a three-round team score of two-over-par 866. The Matadors then went on to finish 17th at the NCAA Regionals, their first appearance in the Regionals since 1992-93. Under Bracken’s tutelage, Northridge has produced 10 All-Americans and has had 29 golfers named all-conference since the 1996-97 season. Bracken, who was named head coach in 1986, has guided his alma mater to three District 8 championships, four appearances in the NCAA Division II championships and one appearance in the NCAA Division I championships. The three-time District 8 Coach of the Year (1987-89) led the Matadors to a
2010-11 MEN’S GOLF
third-place trophy at the NCAA Division II championships in 1990, the program’s last season at the Division II level. Northridge also has NCAA finishes of third in 1989, fifth in 1987 and eighth in 1988. A 1980 graduate of Cal State Northridge with a bachelor’s degree in commercial recreation, Bracken played for the school’s golf program during the 1978 and 1979 seasons. His career low round was 70, shot in the Matadors’ victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 9, 1979. Bracken was 3-0 in 1978 and 4-2 in 1979 for the Matadors in match play. His best tournament was a 152 at the 1979 UC Riverside Invitational. Bracken was voted all-league in golf and basketball at James Monroe High School, graduating in 1975 before earning his associate of arts degree at Los Angeles Valley College in 1978. After college, Bracken’s playing experience includes winning the Oxnard City Championship and a fourth-place finish at the Ventura County Championship in 1991. He also was a qualifier for the 1987 U.S. Amateur, the 1985 Low Amateur at the California State Open and a quarterfinalist for the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship in 1985. Bracken, born in Los Angeles on Jan. 16, 1957, has been an active member in the Southern California Golf Association, the Southern California Public Links Golf Association and is co-chairman of the Ben Graham Memorial Scholarship at Cal State Northridge. He resides in Granada Hills with his wife Kim and two daughters, Hallie and Carly. He also owns a pool cleaning business and is a former child actor.

DR. JOLENE KOESTER
University President Dr. Jolene Koester began her appointment as the fourth president of California State University, Northridge on July 1, 2000. At the time of her appointment, Koester had been serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, a post she had held since 1993. Prior to her appointment as provost, she served in other executive positions in the academic affairs division at CSU Sacramento. She has been a faculty member since 1980. She earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota, an M.A. in communication arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. in speech communication from Minnesota. The author of several scholarly books and articles on intercultural and interpersonal communication and a former Fulbright Scholar, Koester has served on systemwide committees on Cornerstones (the California State University’s systemwide strategic plan), budget and accountability, and teacher preparation. The Minnesota native chaired CSU Sacramento’s NCAA accreditation study and was president of the Western States Communication Association. In 1998, Cal State Northridge celebrated its 40th anniversary as the only public university located in Los
Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, home to about 1.7 million residents. Founded in 1958, the university has grown to include the 353-acre Northridge campus with over 34,000 diverse students and more than 3,800 employees. The university is one of the largest in the 23-campus California State University system. Cal State Northridge offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in more than 50 different majors.
RICK MAZZUTO
Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto was named Cal State Northridge Athletic Director on August 3, 2006, becoming the seventh athletic director in the Matadors’ 48-year history. Mazzuto comes to Northridge from Longwood University in Farmville, Va., where he served as athletic director since 2002. He has led the Lancers in the school’s transition from Division II to Division I, which began in March 2002. At Longwood, Mazzuto guided the program through many changes, including increases in operating budgets, scholarships and department personnel, while also overseeing scheduling, fundraising and marketing. Additionally, Mazzuto was instrumental in developing a comprehensive master plan for new athletic facilities and the complete renovation of some existing facilities. Prior to his days at Longwood, Mazzuto was the athlet-
ic director at Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif. from 1989 to 2000. He oversaw a $5-million budget and 16-sport athletic program while with the Gaels. During his time at SMC, the Gaels made three trips to the NCAA Tournament with their 1992 women’s soccer, 1997 men’s basketball and 1999 women’s basketball squads. Mazzuto began his athletic director career at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where he managed the Gaels’ 20-sport program. While there, Iona participated in two NCAA Tournaments and National Invitational Tournaments in men’s basketball, as the school won a combined 13 conference championships. Mazzuto started at Iona in 1977, working for three years as the institution’s associate athletic director. Mazzuto has served on numerous committees during his career, including the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee from 1991 to 1997. He also has extensive community service activities, serving on the Board of Directors of both the Moraga and New Rochelle Rotary Clubs. Mazzuto currently serves on the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics and is on the Big West Compliance and Game Management Committee and is the administrative liaison to the Sports Information Directors. Mazzuto earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where he began his career in intercollegiate athletics as the school’s sports information director for two years. He also served as SID at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. for four years, and was the publicity director for the East Coast Conference for two years. Mazzuto is married to the former Janet Johnstone.
