BONNIE MURPHY WOMEN’S GOLF HEAD COACH // 10TH SEASON // CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE, 2000

BONNIE MURPHY, A TWO-TIME BIG WEST COACH OF THE YEAR, HAS recently completed a full decade at the helm of the Cal State Northridge women’s golf program. Despite a sixth-place finish at the Big West Championship this season, the Matadors’ team scoring average of 311.5 was the best in the 15-year history of the women’s golf program at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors won one team title in 2010-11 after repeating as champions of the Firestone Gill Invitational at Monarch Dunes G.C. Playing in New Mexico State’s Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational, Northridge posted the two lowest team rounds in school history with a second round 292 and a final round 293. First-year player Kylie Kimura led the Matadors with a 77.2 stroke average this season. In 2001-02, the Matadors’ first year in the Big West Conference, Murphy guided Northridge to a second-place finish, finishing seven shots behind UC Irvine. The Matadors then went on to win back-to-back Big West Championships in 2003 and 2004. Northridge won its first championship with a two-round, 617 which defeated Idaho by four shots. 2003 Big West Individual champion Beth Allen then led the Matadors to a 19th-place team finish at the NCAA West Regional, finishing 15th individually. In 2004, the Matadors claimed their second consecutive four-shot victory by defeating UC Irvine with a three-round total of 925. Allen claimed her second straight individual title and Murphy had her second straight Coach of

2010-11 WOMEN’S GOLF

the Year award. In Murphy’s 10 seasons, the Matadors have posted 40 top-five finishes and have won 13 team titles, including a pair of conference championships. Northridge has placed among the top-five teams at the conference championships in eight of 10 seasons under Murphy. In addition to a pair of Big West Coach of the Year awards, the Matadors have produced 14 all-conference golfers and 12 women have been named to the Big West All-Academic team under Murphy’s watch. Allen, the most decorated women’s golfer in Northridge history has since gone on to earn her LPGA Tour card and is currently competing on the professional tour. Murphy began her collegiate coaching career as a first-year assistant under Stephanie Martin in 2000-01. That season the Matadors claimed a second place finish at the Big Sky Conference Championships. A four-year letterwinner for the Matador golf team from 1996-2000, Murphy competed in 69 rounds and took a total 6,182 strokes. Murphy recorded a personal-best 10th place finish at the Princeville Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kauai, Hawaii in 1998-99. That season, she also received Big Sky Conference All-Academic honors. A native of Chicago, Ill., Murphy earned her bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Cal State Northridge in December 2000. She has also spent time running a non-profit caddy program for teens in 1998 and has also spent time in the LPGA Teaching and Country Club Professional Program.

DR. JOLENE KOESTER

University President Dr. Jolene Koester began her appointment as the fourth president of California State University, Northridge on July 1, 2000. At the time of her appointment, Koester had been serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of communication studies at California State University, Sacramento, a post she had held since 1993. Prior to her appointment as provost, she served in other executive positions in the academic affairs division at CSU Sacramento. She has been a faculty member since 1980. She earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota, an M.A. in communication arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. in speech communication from Minnesota. The author of several scholarly books and articles on intercultural and interpersonal communication and a former Fulbright Scholar, Koester has served on systemwide committees on Cornerstones (the California State University’s systemwide strategic plan), budget and accountability, and teacher preparation. The Minnesota native chaired CSU Sacramento’s NCAA accreditation study and was president of the Western States Communication Association. In 1998, Cal State Northridge celebrated its 40th anniversary as the only public university located in Los

Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, home to about 1.7 million residents. Founded in 1958, the university has grown to include the 353-acre Northridge campus with over 34,000 diverse students and more than 3,800 employees. The university is one of the largest in the 23-campus California State University system. Cal State Northridge offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in more than 50 different majors.

RICK MAZZUTO

Athletic Director Rick Mazzuto was named Cal State Northridge Athletic Director on August 3, 2006, becoming the seventh athletic director in the Matadors’ 48-year history. Mazzuto comes to Northridge from Longwood University in Farmville, Va., where he served as athletic director since 2002. He has led the Lancers in the school’s transition from Division II to Division I, which began in March 2002. At Longwood, Mazzuto guided the program through many changes, including increases in operating budgets, scholarships and department personnel, while also overseeing scheduling, fundraising and marketing. Additionally, Mazzuto was instrumental in developing a comprehensive master plan for new athletic facilities and the complete renovation of some existing facilities. Prior to his days at Longwood, Mazzuto was the athlet-

ic director at Saint Mary’s in Moraga, Calif. from 1989 to 2000. He oversaw a $5-million budget and 16-sport athletic program while with the Gaels. During his time at SMC, the Gaels made three trips to the NCAA Tournament with their 1992 women’s soccer, 1997 men’s basketball and 1999 women’s basketball squads. Mazzuto began his athletic director career at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., where he managed the Gaels’ 20-sport program. While there, Iona participated in two NCAA Tournaments and National Invitational Tournaments in men’s basketball, as the school won a combined 13 conference championships. Mazzuto started at Iona in 1977, working for three years as the institution’s associate athletic director. Mazzuto has served on numerous committees during his career, including the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee from 1991 to 1997. He also has extensive community service activities, serving on the Board of Directors of both the Moraga and New Rochelle Rotary Clubs. Mazzuto currently serves on the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics and is on the Big West Compliance and Game Management Committee and is the administrative liaison to the Sports Information Directors. Mazzuto earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where he began his career in intercollegiate athletics as the school’s sports information director for two years. He also served as SID at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. for four years, and was the publicity director for the East Coast Conference for two years. Mazzuto is married to the former Janet Johnstone.

ATHLETIC TRAINING CENTER & WEIGHT ROOM THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY Northridge Sports Medicine staff is charged with the responsibility of providing the highest quality medical care to the more than 400 student-athletes that participate in 20 intercollegiate athletic teams in the most efficient manner possible. This responsibility includes administering to the health and welfare of the student-athlete on a daily basis and measuring their readiness for athletic competition. In conjunction with the Addie Koltz Student Health Center, the sports medicine staff provides daily services in the prevention, immediate care and management of athletic injuries and illnesses. Thanks to a generous donation from the Encino-Tarzana Regional Medical Center and its parent company, Tenet Foundation, it was possible for the 2,500 square-foot Athletic Training Center to be built. The Center opened in September, 2000, and almost quadrupled the size of the old facility. The Sports Medicine staff

NORTHRIDGE_

THIS IS CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY? California State University, Northridge exists to help students realize their educational goals. The University's first priority is to promote the welfare and intellectual progress of students. Part of the 23-campus California State University system, Cal State Northridge is the only public university located in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley (If incorporated, the area with 1.7 million residents would be the fifth largest city in the United States). Northridge celebrated its 40th anniversary in 1998-99, having educated more than 165,000 alumni. The main Northridge campus covers 353 acres and has about two million square feet of facilities, including about two dozen major buildings and more than 100 in total. Campus physical assets are valued at more than $613 million. The physical heart of the campus is the Oviatt Library with more than one million volumes. Cal State Northridge also operates a satellite campus in adjoining Ventura County. Cal State Northridge, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, is one of the largest higher education institutions in California and is the thirdlargest public university (2003 enrollment) in Los Angeles County after UCLA and Long Beach State. CSUN nearly 33,000 students in Fall 2003, with about 1,800 faculty and a staff of nearly 2,000.

CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE HISTORY In fall 1956, the San Fernando Valley campus of the Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences (later Cal State Los Angeles) was established on the present Northridge site. Soon after, the state Legislature passed Assembly Bill 971, which provided for the campus to separate from its parent college. On July 1, 1958, the founding date of the present university, the institution became San Fernando Valley State College, with about 3,300 students and 104 faculty. On June 1, 1972, the college was renamed California State University, Northridge, by action of the state Legislature and the Board of Trustees of the California State University.

NORTHRIDGE NOTABLES ■ CSUN is headed toward becoming one of the most modern university campuses in the country. Six new buildings worth more than $70 million each with state-of-the-art facilities have finished or are under construction, including new wings for the Oviatt Library and a new Arts, Media

[ SEQUOIA HALL ] and Communication Building. Construction is underway on renovations to the University Student Union. ■ Cal State Northridge has small average class sizes, ranging from about 29 for lecture sections and 19 for lab-

oratory sections. In the recent student survey, small class size was one of the campus' features most appreciated by students, with 84 percent indicating satisfaction. ■ Cal State Northridge ranked first among 529 master's level universities in its number of graduates who went on to earn Ph.Ds in the social sciences and psychology, according to a recent National Science Foundation report. The university also ranked second in mathematics and among the top dozen such campuses in biology, computer sciences, engineering and physical sciences. ■ Northridge students have good things to say about their experience at the university. In a recent survey of Cal State Northridge students: 86 percent said they were satisfied with their overall experience at Cal State Northridge; 87 percent said they were satisfied with the overall quality of instruction; and about two-thirds said they would choose CSUN again as a university.

NORTHRIDGE_

■ Northridge has been a leader in involving its students in community service learning, where academic learning is merged with meaningful community work.
