LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY
To our Alumni and Friends, I am pleased to share with you the Cleveland State University Foundation Annual Report. This past fiscal year we received the largest gift in CSU’s history when alumnus and prominent businessman Monte Ahuja and his wife, Usha, donated $10 million to fund scholarships and an endowed professorship in global business. This generous gift, as well as an earlier $6 million scholarship commitment from alumnus Anand “Bill” Julka and his wife, Neeraj, reflect the powerful impact of a CSU education. Both Mr. Ahuja, MBA ’75, and Mr. Julka, MSIE ’74, attribute their success in business and in life to their education. They say they are privileged to give back and they lead by example, encouraging others to support the University. Just recently, the Cleveland Foundation awarded a grant of $1.5 million jointly to Cleveland State and to the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) to support our collaborative effort to recruit, educate and train primary care physicians to serve urban communities. This grant will help provide a University pipeline to high school juniors and seniors interested in studying medicine, as well as clinical spaces in neighborhoods and mentoring opportunities. We also inaugurated a new annual tradition – Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise – to increase private support for scholarships. Radiance more than lived up to its name, raising approximately $377,000 which enabled us to award scholarships to more than 100 students, keeping them in school and on track toward graduation. Words cannot express our gratitude to the Ahujas and the Julkas for their generosity, to the Cleveland Foundation for advancing an academic initiative that will impact the future of Northeast Ohio, and to all those who supported Radiance. Yet despite such successes, our need is still great. A long recession and anemic recovery are making the dream of college more challenging for many middle-class families. Significant cuts to student aid programs add even more urgency to our top fundraising goal of additional student scholarships. To this end, we have hired Berinthia R. LeVine as vice president for advancement and executive director of the CSU Foundation. With her strong background and outstanding success as a fundraiser in Greater Cleveland, she will bolster our advancement efforts and bring a new level of philanthropic support to Cleveland State. To all our alumni and friends, thank you for your support. Whether you are making a financial contribution, volunteering your time, or providing internships and cooperative education experiences for our students, you are helping make a great University even better. To our Alumni and Friends, An investment in Cleveland State University is an investment that pays dividends. When students graduate, remain in Northeast Ohio and find employment that allows them to use their knowledge and skills, that’s a dividend. When faculty research helps cure disease or reduce energy consumption, that’s a dividend. And when a campus evolves into a thriving downtown neighborhood that brings residents and visitors back to the city, that’s a dividend, too. Despite the challenging economy, we’re proud to say that donors are still investing in Cleveland State University. In fact, our Foundation funds under investment have grown to $53.9 million — the highest total ever, thanks to new gifts and effective management. While this is great news, our endowment must continue to grow to match CSU’s quality and importance to the community. It is imperative that CSU, like all state universities, increase its support from the private sector. Businesses, foundations, alumni and friends must be the source of the annual, capital, special project, scholarship, fellowship and endowment gifts that will keep the University strong and growing. Cleveland State is an invaluable community resource — providing students of all ages with the education they need to succeed; helping business, scientific, government and civic partners identify and resolve challenges; and boosting the economy and city life. Our alumni, donors and friends have helped make Cleveland State University what it is today. For that, we thank you. PHILANTHROPIC HIGHLIGHTS 2010-2011 CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION FUNDS UNDER INVESTMENT REACHED AN ALL-TIME HIGH — $53.9 MILLION, thanks to generous gifts and prudent financial counsel.
RADIANCE, CSU REALIZING THE PROMISE raised approximately $377,000 in support of student scholarships in its first year. Radiance scholarships were awarded to more than 100 undergraduate students in good academic standing who were at risk for dropping out of school because of finances. This year’s Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise will be Friday, May 11, 2012. Radiance not only is CSU’s signature fundraising event, it is key to the University’s student retention efforts.
Alumnus MONTE AHUJA, MBA ’75, and his wife, Usha, made the largest gift in the University’s 47-year history — a $10 MILLION commitment to fund scholarships in business and engineering, as well as an endowed professorship, the Monte Ahuja Endowed Chair in Global Business. Mr. Ahuja used a business plan he developed as a CSU class project to found Transtar Industries, Inc., which launched his successful career. The Monte Ahuja College of Business was named in his honor. Mr. Ahuja served as a member of the CSU Board of Trustees from 1991-2000, including six years as chairman, and was the first alumnus to do so. He also served as a director of the CSU Foundation. In 1990, he was named one of Cleveland State’s Distinguished Alumni. This generous gift by the Ahujas recognizes CSU’s top fundraising goal — increasing scholarship support for students.

THE POWER OF THREE partnership between Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Play House and PlayhouseSquare has raised $29 MILLION to date toward the conversion of the historic Allen Theatre into a new performance home for both the Play House and CSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance. This arts education collaborative, unlike any other in the nation, is providing state-of-the-art facilities for our students while enabling them to hone their skills alongside working professionals. In addition to the Allen Theatre, CSU’s new arts campus includes the renovated Middough Building as home to the theatre, dance and art programs. And CSU’s art gallery will relocate to a highly visible location in the former Cowell and Hubbard Building. The Power of Three partnership/arts campus is a key component in CSU’s ongoing commitment to building a downtown neighborhood while also enhancing the educational experience.

UNIVERSITY HIGHLIGHTS 2010-2011 Freshman enrollment grew 11 percent over last year, with an average grade point average of 3.21 for incoming students. For the second consecutive year, the average ACT test score exceeded the national average.
Campus International School, in its second year, added third grade classes and expanded kindergarten to four classes. Total enrollment nearly doubled to 220 students, with a waiting list of more than 300. Campus International School, an innovative collaboration with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District that provides an educational choice to families living in the city, features the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate curriculum and will eventually offer grades K-12.
Cleveland State University, the Cleveland Play House and PlayhouseSquare established an arts education collaborative that will enable students to hone their skills alongside working professionals. CSU’s theatre and dance programs have been relocated to the historic and newly refurbished Allen Theatre and Middough Building. CSU’s art programs and art gallery also are part of this bold, new arts campus that will bring thousands of new visitors downtown.

U.S. News and World Report ranked Cleveland State University within the top 10 percent of more than 3,000 universities in its “National University” category.
Campus Village, the single largest residential development in Cleveland in more than three decades, is underway along Chester Avenue between East 21st and East 24th streets. A modern lifestyle development of nine buildings, restaurants, shops, green spaces and more, Campus Village will offer more than 300 marketrate apartments and help create a thriving University neighborhood in the heart of downtown Cleveland.
The University entered into a partnership with the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) aimed at training urban primary care physicians. The initiative will train doctors through two unique programs – one targeting individuals who already have bachelor’s degrees and one targeting freshmen from minority and disadvantaged backgrounds. The state of Ohio included funds for CSU/NEOMED in its annual budget – recognition of the program’s significance and potential for addressing the serious national issue of urban health care.

The inaugural Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise more than lived up to its name, raising $377,000 for student scholarships. As a result, scholarships were awarded to more than 100 sophomores, juniors and seniors, enabling them to stay in school and progress toward their degrees. The success of Radiance was made possible by support from the corporate community and private donors. More than 400 guests attended the reception and brief program. The next Radiance, CSU Realizing the Promise will be Friday, May 11, 2012. Our goal is to raise $500,000. RADIANCE SCHOLARS
WANFANG CHEN’s family came to Cleveland from China nearly four years ago for the educational opportunities available here. The only person in her family to speak English, the CSU sophomore says language is her biggest challenge in the classroom and in studying. The Cleveland resident hopes to graduate in 2015 and pursue a career as a pediatric nurse.
GEORGE THOMAS became interested in electrical engineering while working on a high school science fair project. Enrolled in an accelerated 4+1 program in the Fenn College of Engineering, he will graduate in 2012 with his bachelor’s degree and in 2013 with his master’s degree. The Cleveland resident works in the College’s embedded control systems research lab and has co-authored a conference paper and technical book chapter.
Following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother, RACHEL WINEGAR is a thirdgeneration CSU student. The Mentor resident, who plans to become a doctor, is majoring in biology/ pre-medicine and also conducts independent research projects. Rachel says her Radiance scholarship allows her to concentrate on her studies and activities such as competitive horseback riding and volunteering with a hospice organization.
The first in his family to attend college, FERAS HAMDAN will graduate in 2012 with a degree in biology. A member of the American Medical Student Association, he plans to attend medical school and specialize in orthopedics or podiatry. The Westlake resident volunteers at the Cleveland Clinic as a researcher and calls himself a proud Viking.
MICHAEL JOHNSON transferred to CSU after earning two associate degrees from Cuyahoga Community College. The biology major hopes to attend medical school and become a neonatologist. A Cleveland resident who works in patient transport at University Hospitals, Michael is a father of four who coaches his son’s football team and tries to show his children the importance of education, hard work and determination.

TERRENCE V. ZUK, BS Industrial Technology ’64, and his wife, Mary, established an endowment to provide scholarships to engineering students who are also members of the Viking soccer team. Now retired and living in North Carolina, they remain strong supporters and ambassadors for CSU. Mr. Zuk was a co-op student and captain of the Fenn Foxes baseball and soccer teams. He was inducted into the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992 for both sports, and in 2010, received CSU’s Distinguished Alumni Award. RICHARD L. BOWEN is the president and founder of Richard L. Bowen and Associates, an architectural/engineering/construction management firm. As a member of the CSU Board of Trustees, he knows that scholarships are key to attracting and retaining outstanding students and he leads by example, encouraging others to support the University and its students. The Richard L. Bowen and Associates Scholarship will be awarded to an incoming engineering freshman who shows academic promise and financial need. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, room, board and books for four to five years so the student graduates without debt.

Linking her teaching, research and philanthropy, REGENNIA N. WILLIAMS made a pledge to CSU for the Initiative for the Study of Religion and Spirituality in the History of Africa and the Diaspora (RASHAD). The funds will be used for student scholarships, short-term fellowships and research travel grants. Dr. Williams, an associate professor of history and Fulbright Scholar, lectured and conducted research at Nigeria’s Obafemi Awolowo University as part of her ongoing work for RASHAD. DAVID LEE BALINT earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1969 from Cleveland State University. Throughout his life, he was active with his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the CSU Alumni Association, serving as treasurer and chair of the development committee. In 2002 he established the David Lee Balint Endowed Scholarship Fund for CSU students seeking degrees in business. Mr. Balint passed away unexpectedly on June 8, 2010. He enabled his endowed scholarship fund to continue to grow after his death by including CSU in his estate plans. This year, the David L. Balint Alumni Office was named in his honor.

As a professional fundraiser, CSU alumnus JAMES P. CONWAY, JD ’58, understood the importance of private support for education. Throughout his distinguished career (alumni director of John Carroll University, vice president of Ursuline College, and more than 25 years as associate vice president and assistant to the president of Case Western Reserve University), he raised millions of dollars. Mr. Conway passed away in September 2010; his wife, Catherine, passed away in June 2011. Through charitable gift annuities, they are benefitting CSU with the establishment of the James P. and Catherine E. Conway Endowment Fund at the law school.

Thank you to all those who volunteer their time, talent and service as members of Cleveland State University’s Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, Alumni Association Board of Directors and Visiting Committees. Your work on behalf of CSU and its students is greatly appreciated.
Richard A. Barone’s term as chair of the CSU Foundation Board of Directors and chair of the Executive Committee ended on June 30, 2011. Mr. Barone, who remains on the foundation board as a director, is chairman of The Ancora Group Inc., an independent investment management firm with nearly $3 billion in customized portfolios for corporations, endowments, foundations, pension plans and individuals. He continues to serve on the boards of a number of private, public and charitable organizations. Mr. Barone’s three years as board chair were marked by endowment growth, a stronger board structure, and an enhanced working relationship between the foundation board and the CSU Board of Trustees.
Steven A. Minter’s term as chair of the CSU Foundation Board of Directors and chair of the Executive Committee began July 1, 2011. Mr. Minter was president and executive director of The Cleveland Foundation from 1984 until his retirement in 2003. He joined CSU in 2003 as an executive-in-residence and a fellow in the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs’ Center for Nonprofit Policy and Practice and also served as the University’s interim vice president for advancement for one year. As foundation chair, he is working to build the stature and diversity of the board and enhance its fundraising capacity.
