Chad Hunter: a 20 Year Retrospective represents a chance to view the work of my colleague Chad Hunter. This exhibition is a survey of work, from portraits to design, which demonstrates Chad’s incredible skills to create works of art while communicating understandable messages. As a highly valued colleague in the Department of Art, Chad’s interactions with the faculty and students have had numerous and far-reaching positive affects. I am very excited to be able to be part of this important exhibition and to be able to share his work for others to enjoy. I would like to thank the many colleagues that have been instrumental in presenting this exhibition. Chad Hunter for the opportunity of exhibiting his wonderful work, the School of the Arts, California State University, Stanislaus for the catalog design and Claremont Print and Copy, Inc. for the printing of this catalog. Many thanks are also extended to the Instructionally Related Activates Program of California State University, Stanislaus, as well as the anonymous donors for the funding of the exhibition and catalogue. Their support is greatly appreciated.

I make art for a few reasons: I like creating and exploring; I like the idea of my work being seen by an audience and I enjoy the process. As you can see by my array of work, my interests vary. I get intrigued by an idea and work on that for a year or more and then move to another concentration. For inspiration, I look, listen, play (and sometimes think). I watch for things that interest me, I read and look at other’s work, but mostly draw. Depending on how the final piece will be used, I generally complete my work in Adobe Photoshop to bring in additional elements, combine layers or make color corrections. All of my explorations begin in my sketchbook. It’s an archiving place, a bucket for my thoughts, my notes, ideas, drawings, etc. I find it a very useful tool; you’ll rarely find me without one. I strive to impose the sketchbook habit on my students. Traditionally, a design studio collaborates with freelancers. It’s usual that an art director conceptualizes, designs a piece and brings in others to help complete the design such as an illustrator, photographer, hand letterer, etc. One of my goals has been to mash my own graphic design, hand lettering and illustration into a cohesive look. The benefit is a single vision in a unified technique. Hopefully I’ve done that to some degree.
