THE SHELTER ABOVE SEA

How to build a building without land?

Competition Design, China

Jan. 2021 - Mar. 2021

Design specification

Due to global warming, the rising sea level has caused a large number of natural disasters and cities been flooded. Based on this trend, it is predicted that in the future we will have to move out of the land and live on the sea. The project was built on the basis of the gradual submersion of land cities and the needs of creation of new cities on the sea.

The main function of the offshore part of the building is housing so as to meet the living needs of a large number of people, and it is placed on the water to meet the lighting needs. The top platform is a sky farm. The main functional areas of the public area on the water are café, library, bar and so on to meet people’s leisure and entertainment needs. Also, a crescent platform extends out for water drops and boats to berth.

The whole building is not separate, and they can be spliced together. Functional facilities are different from each other. A large number of individual facility connected to the water platform are spliced together as a new type of watery city, and people can slowly get away from the land and live on the sea. The submerged city becomes a scenery of the strait, warning people to learn

50m 200m 400m Sea level rise is a kind of delayed natural disaster to human survival and economic development. Just because it is delayed, it is often not taken seriously by people. The rise of sea level brings harm to people living in coastal areas. It increases the frequency of catastrophic storm surges in coastal areas, intensifies flooding, erodes coastal lowlands and coasts, and recedes coasts. The polluted water in coastal areas, the salinization of farmland, the increase of tidal range and the strengthening of wave action weaken the ability of coastal protection dykes and DAMS, force designers to improve engineering design standards and increase the investment of engineering projects. It will also aggravate the intrusion of sea water in estuaries, increase the difficulty of sewage discharge and destroy the ecological balance. Floods Extinction Some of the world's cities are vulnerable to rising sea levels. If global temperatures rise by more than 1.5C, the world's oceans will rise by more than 15 inches (38.1cm) by 2100. Moreover, if global temperatures rise to 2 degrees Celsius, the world's oceans will rise by more than 20 inches in a century. However, it is important to know that rising global temperatures may adversely affect cities that are geographically prone to storms and floods. "These global metropolises may look strong and stable, but this is an illusion. They are increasingly threatened as sea levels rise."The main cities affected are Jakarta, Bangkok, Lagos, Dhaka, London, Houston and Manila SEA LEVEL RISE MAINLY AFFECTS AREAS According to data monitored by NASA satellites, the Earth's sea level has risen by 85.9 millimeters since 1993, an average of 3.4 millimeters per year. Sea level rise is mainly due to two factors: 1) the melting of glaciers increases the amount of seawater; 2) Increased volume caused by warming sea temperatures. 0 20 40 60 80 1995 2000 2005 2010 2015 Sea Height Vanation (mm) millimeters per year margin: 0.4 Data source: Satellite sea level observations.Credit: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center SATELLITE DATA:1993-PRESENT RANGE CHANGE 3.4 SEA-LEVEL RISE DATA THE DANGEROUS OF RISING SEA LEVELS Analysis CAN ARCHITECTURE HELP MITIGATE GLOBAL WARMING?

Most of the underwater structures are water droplet manufacturing plants and laboratories for research on hydroelectric power and carbon dioxide conversion, as well as underwater farms and spas.

“water drop” is the main vehicle for people to transit in water in the future, and meanwhile can meet the needs of people’s necessary daily life. The powerful internal recycle of water can supply human life for a long time in water drops, so water drops in the submerged cities are used widely as rescue vehicles, which transfer the rescued people or relief supplies back and forth between the needed regions and the new shelter city, becoming the essential means of transportation. The water drop’s surface is made of carbon nanotubes to mitigate global warming and meanwhile the water drop can be deformed according to the current water pressure to drive with maximum efficiency. People constantly produce and improve the “water drop” to meet the needs of people living in water.

How to repurpose construction debris?

Design Statement

Pier 0 is located at the end of Maiden Lane, adjacent to pier 15. It has been conceived as a material construction waste recycling plant with the primary aim of repurposing construction debris and reintegrating them into the construction market. This project also has a dual mission: to raise public awareness about the concerning issue of unused materials after construction and demolition in a time of escalating consumption rates.

On the first floor, the building's program encompasses an art exhibition area, a public indoor plaza, and a window that links the public to the recycling factory floor. Within the industrial program, materials are separated and sorted, aggregates are processed, and the final output is transported via boats, completing the continuous cycle of the recycling plant's purpose.

The second floor extends above the factory floor, serving as a public exhibition and performance space that highlights the industrial character of the environment. The hanging corridors are lined with glazed walls, symbolizing transparency in the material's journey within the urban landscape. As one traverses these corridors, they ascend to the observation deck on the third floor, which is seamlessly connected to a public concourse.

HOUSING AS THEATER LIFE AS PERFORMANCE
9:00 AM 15:00 PM 21:00 PM

How to 'truly' integrate housing and theater?

Design Statement

Theater played a crucial role in Harlem's history. Famous community's theaters like the Apollo Theater have served as platforms for local artists to showcase their talents, and eventually became spaces of empowerment, providing a voice for the local community and contributing significantly to the cultural and social fabric of Harlem.

Instead of integrating theaters or performance spaces as a amenities in the building, we are trying to extract fundamental attributes that make up the theatrical experience and implement them into housing spatially and visually as a mean to explore a new co-living experience enhanced by the idea of theater.

Housing itself is already theatrical. Performance activities are not concerts and actual theater plays. Pedestrians walking along the hallway, the sound and smell of resident’s cooking, the voice from your neighbor’s arguing and laughing, these are all elements that sort of compose a large play with the space of living as a backdrop, and all the diverse daily activities will be perceived as performances, viewed by the community collectively. As our title says, HOUSING AS THEATER, LIFE AS PERFORMANCE

Design Description

This project is designed based on Lavadia. The region once flourished for its mineral resources, but it is gradually decaying due to overexploitation. To develop and promote the local declining mining culture, the building will be transformed into a comprehensive building with an ore museum as the main body and an entertainment function as the supplement.

The process of ore mining and processing is the main line throughout the building, and people can learn more about the ore culture through the machinery and ore in the ore exhibition area. The mining culture is penetrated in a popular way, such as streets where artisans perform, operas telling the history of miners. People can personally experience how to process the ore and make the crafts they want, which allows people to interactively participate in the production and helps them gain knowledge better. Besides, the building also contains a swimming pool, restaurants, hot springs, terraces and other recreational areas, where people can relax and entertain themselves after studying.

The building is not located in the center of the city, so there is an accommodation area at the foot of the hill, which is convenient for visitors to stay. They don't need to travel to places with sea views, this is the only option for them to spend their holidays.

CAT'S PLUG IN CITY

GSAPP, ADR course

Sept. 2022 - Dec 2022

This is the Adr assignment for the first semester of the MArch Program at Columbia University, which is to research an existing architectural project or concept and express it in my own way. I chose the architectural concept of Plug in City, and since it is not a built building, I used a cat as the main character to tell the story of how to live in the city and how the city works.

The summary of the story is : The cat wakes up in its own plug-in dwelling unit, and the movable device has spread its wings to fly to the plug-in office. At the office the cat struggles to draw from day to night, and after work it can quickly reach the entertainment places through the transportation pipeline to play with its’ friends, and finally it returns home exhausted and falls asleep. The last picture of the cat sleeping peacefully at the owner's feet, found that this day's life is just a dream of the cat.

I used felt to make a model of the dwelling unit as a toy for the cat to explain the origin of the cat's dream.
