Top Tips for aspirant PBP riders (or those just out from lock-down?)
H
ave a grab bag containing your essentials when you go into the control stops. They give you a PBP musette but don’t use that because everyone else will have one and you might pick up the wrong one or someone else might go off with yours. I used one of our very own ‘Cycling UK’ musettes. Make your own list but my grab bag essentials included: ∙
Money / cards / mobile phone
∙
Brevet Card
∙
Toilet paper (there are few things worse than queuing for the toilet only to finally get in there to find that the paper has run out – been there, done that, once was enough!)
∙
Semidried prunes (or whatever works for you to ward off constipation – you will be eating a lot of fairly monotonous food day and night so you may well find a need!)
∙
Empty or part empty bottles added to the grab bag when leaving the bike
Having these things all together should save a lot of wandering about and returning to the bike (which might be a little way away given the size of the event) because you have forgotten something. If you nap be sure to set an alarm – I find I can nap well with my head on a table cradled in my arms and with my phone, alarm set, enclosed by my arms. Pee discretely in a hedge before you get to the control – saves potentially queuing for the urinal before you go for your food. It is a good idea to emulate the PBP start by doing at least one long ride prior to the event which starts in the evening and goes through the night and the following day (unless you choose the 84-hour morning start). I made up my own 400k from home, up through Amesbury, Swindon and Gloucester, across into Wales and then on to Aberystwyth – I loved it and plan to ride it again sometime. All night McDonalds or motorway services make handy stopping places. Buy a decent lightweight helmet and resist the urge to mount anything on it. This should reduce the risk of Shermer’s Neck, which is a condition where the neck muscles fail from fatigue and can no longer support the head. If you ride PBP or a similar event you will probably see riders with neck supports or a cord from the back of their helmet down to their saddle (this latter solution makes mounting and dismounting the bike awkward and, I imagine, painful). I have never suffered from Shermer’s neck myself but I do precautionary neck muscle strengthening exercises in the run-up to the longer rides. Read lots – there is a lot of advice from riders of previous events to be picked over. Some people recommend abstention from coffee (and all caffeine) for months prior to the event to ensure the maximum hit when you start drinking it again on the first night. As a coffee lover I would lose the will to live if I did that but it might work for you!

Remembering . . . encouraging
April in Paris
T
his has been a title of many articles in previous issues of Cycle Ink. I have ridden to Paris on a good number of occasions and eventually rode every April for quite a few years, many times being joined by others. Often it has been their words that have appeared in the magazine. I initially rode from Paris to Le Havre in a day and a half but for many years now I have taken a day to get to Portsmouth, an overnight crossing and three days to get to Paris.
The Paris photographs are from these earlier rides. I have for various reasons been off the bike for number of years and had a good number of false restarts. The causes of not being able to cycle have settled and until the Covid-19 pandemic I was beginning to put some miles in my legs. I had set aside a couple of weeks immediately after Easter for the Paris trip but did not book anything. I was unsure if I could make the journey and if I did how many days I would need. The logistics can be a tangle as the French will not put their villages at the right distances apart to allow me to vary the daily mileages to meet my current legs. To aid the logistics I have been continuing to try and learn French with Chloé from Coffee Time French which was held in Velo Domestique but now on-line. In preparation for the trip to Paris I booked a month starting in late February, in Deniá with the intension of riding every day and extending the mileage and including more hills over the month. I had three weeks of perfect weather, short sleeves at lunch time. I met some riders from the Bournemouth area including Bill Simmons stopping to pass the time of day with them. There were a number cyclist I knew in the hotel in Deniá and I always had someone to eat with in the evening. I was leaving the more demanding hills for the last week including Col de Rates with its refurbished time clock but then Covid-19 struck and I was evacuated home that week early. (Continued page 6)

This virus also meant that April in Paris was postponed. On arriving home I did manage to get out on the bike on a couple of occasions but then one of my clinical consultants decided that I should be imprisoned because of this pest. Various instructions and registrations saw me receiving care parcels but I was not to leave my flat. I eventually managed to stop the care packages having taken the ones I did receive to Kevin and Kathy Moore (The Cake Crew) who are involved with Hope for Food, this organisation feeds the homeless and helps the needy. (All of the suitable items remaining from the CTCWessex Cycling Gridiron and Picnic events have also been donated to this worthy cause). A week after some tests and examinations at the hospital, a wonderful day out for me, I had another consultation, five and a half weeks from my initial incarceration. The consultant agreed that I could under a great number of caveats again ride my bike and shop for fresh food. Being back on the bike is so wonderful. No longer grazing at home all day and now tiring myself out on the bike has brought such satisfaction of achievement but with equal frustration because of my slow speed and short distances. Is April in Paris postponed, or cancelled for another year?

Fred Burrell
F
red & Jean moved down from Buckinghamshire in 1987 and joined the local CTC rides getting out most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Always the cyclist Fred had not taken to driving. Back in Bucks, Fred’s commute was a 36 mile ride in all weathers. Of course, family holidays would be cycle tours here and abroad. More Quietly Testing rather than gentle, as The Picos, The Alps and The Pyrenees were explored and enjoyed. Quietly Testing as Fred was a quiet man, ‘a gentleman of the old school’. Fred had done stuff - twice the British 24 hour National Champion (1956 & 1960 both with 477.7 miles av 19.9mph, in 1956 the record stood at 478.56 miles) - but his modesty made it small talk at stops over coffee and if anyone sought to make more of it Fred, with a twinkle, would steer the conversation back to the present with the gentle reminder ‘different times’. Fred ‘hung up his wheels’ in his 92nd year and died in Forest Holme Hospice aged 98 on the 21st March 2020. Our sympathies to wife Jean and daughter Janice.
Please be advised that the runs list is subject to the lock-down being released. There may be restrictions on group sizes and use of cafés. I will update all by email with the latest changes to official guidelines

No rides have been submitted for publication this quarter. For further details on the next session of outings please refer to:
http://www.wessexctc.org/inters.htm It is hoped that a volunteer to co-ordinate the Inters ride roster will be in post for the next quarter and normal service will be resumed.
Cycling UK has advised that mass events not be held and consequently we need to comply with that advice. The decision not to have the Cyclists Picnic was made after Bob and the band of helpers who make this pleasurable event happen had built a contingency plan to enable a semblance of the event to go ahead. Another casualty is this autumn’s Gridiron 100km, our popular evergreen New Forest event which is such a feature of members and others cycling year. Tony and all the team involved are deeply disappointed at the cancellation.

T
he Club has offered to support any cycling appropriate project as part of the current works being undertaken at The Lymington Community Centre. The centre manager, Rachel, reports that their independent Pre-school Group are raising funds to purchase various ‘wheels’ for their wards to use in the outdoor section: ● 1 x three wheeler 3-in-1 trike [for 2 year olds to use] ● 1 x 12” bike with stabilisers [for a 3-4 year olds to use] ● 1 x balance bike [Ages 2½ - 5 ] ● 1 x Plasma Car [3 years and up] Get them early! Seems like a good investment for the future of cycling. AND that wasting outgrown child’s bike in your garage could be loved again . . .

I will be introducing 1 or 2 rides each Thursday with restrictions on Group numbers up to a maximum of 6. Until the Government and Cycling UK change their advice I aim to arrange 1 or 2 (if numbers require it) group rides on Thursdays with a maximum of 6 people to each group. The details of the proposed ride(s) will be sent out by email each week asking who would like to join, on a 1st come 1st served basis. To join the email list please contact me via the website. Hope this is ok for everyone. Cathy Cottenham
A FAVOURITE BIKE
L
ike many other Wessex cyclists I seem to have accumulated all sorts of bikes. Small wheel folders, shopping bike, winter bike with dynamo, summer carbon lightweight, tandem, it goes on! My favourite bike however is my Giant single speed. Bought in 2009 for £225 mail order from Pearson Cycles. It came as a 46x17 73in fixed. After two rides I changed the gearing to a more hill friendly 42x17 67in fixed. Over time the bike has been treated to carbon forks, handlebars, saddle and bottle cages(!) It also has lightweight tyres and tubes. All of which has made it very satisfying to ride. Also over time I have had to go to lower gears and with that adopt a freewheel. I am now riding 44x20 59in free. At a cadence of 80 this equates to 14mph. A "get you home" cadence of 60 is about 11mph. The bike is ideal for solo riding when there is no time pressure. The quietness, light weight and simplicity of the single speed makes you at one with the bike and the miles pass easily. Stopping on a wayside seat for a few minutes I can glance across at the Giant and think "Yes, my favourite bike".

Chesildene Avenue - Uncontrolled crossing facilities (accessibility request). Strategy work and concept development - LCWIP (Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan) - A draft plan was sent to DfT in December but no feedback has been received yet. The Strategic Cycling Network and Key Walking Routes are currently planned. The formal engagement process with all stakeholders will be late 2020. Beryl Bikes Update The Beryl Bikes team are pleased with how the scheme is going and there are currently 400 bikes out. The plan is to increase this to a 1000 by July and to expand into Christchurch. The bikes have been fitted with more secure locks. New bike stands are being considered that would make the bikes more resilient to being blown over. The locations are checked regularly by staff travelling either by a van or emoped. There are also plans to involve communities in monitoring bikes and possibly adopting Community Ambassador programmes. It was suggested that, to encourage parents to use bikes, bays could be located near schools. This will be considered, 290 Bays in existence, several more to be installed in 3rd Phase of area provision. It is intended to use social media more to spread the word. During the planned closure of Wallisdown Road Beryl Bike will be making a special offer to encourage the use of the bikes. Adverts appeared on Social Media and backed by BCP website. Survey Results Emailed questionnaire was sent to 130 people and there was about 45 responses, the majority of which gave preference to Protected cycle ways, with Stepped Cycle Tracks like Castle Lane West second and Light Segregation third. Full results shown at BH Active Travel Website. It was also thought that Modal Filtering should be a standard part of Road Design schemes and high-quality design protected cycleways over side roads, and as an example of full set- back junction design on Sea-View road to Old Wareham Road section of Ringwood Road A338/Wessex Fields Proposals The results of the Consultation exercise are currently being considered.

n 1952 National Service saw 18 year old Johnny in Singapore with the RAF (taking 5 days to fly there!). A lot of the time was spent lurking in woods with a gun but he wasn’t called on to shoot anybody! Mostly he was cycling. Known to be a ‘useful’ cyclist he was enrolled in the RAF team and there were had many happy hours officially training and racing with the locals. 1955 and back in Weymouth Johnny joined the Wessex Road Club the racing body of the Wessex CTC. Johnny went to work as a postman in London and in 1976 now married with a son, the family moved back to Weymouth. With the postal strike Johnny transferred to the Admiralty and was posted to Bincleaves to eventually take charge of the Layapart store, which he ran with efficiency and dedication. Enthusiatic himself, Johnny inspired his fellow cyclists: offering help, encouragement and advice: stopping to help other cyclists with a problem on the road: recruiting with his ready supply of CTC leaflets from his saddle bag: marshalling and stamping cards at Audax events. Neither did his commitment finish at the end of the ride; visiting those who were suffering illness, were bereaved or with other troubles. Many of us have been cheered by and will miss his wry sense of humour. On one of his last cycle rides he came across a young lad with a car which had run out of petrol. He offered to cycle with a petrol can to the garage at Portesham, fill up and cycle back, which he did one-handed. This was typical of Johnny, he would help anybody. Elected Runs Secretary and then Secretary of the CTC West Dorset Section Johnny took up his new responsibilities with his characteristic fashion, organising many rides, tours and events, ably assisted by his second wife Janet. Responsibilities included attendance at D.A. committee functions in places as far afield as Salisbury, by cycle an all day event. He helped to introduce a club newsletter and is remembered for his humorous contributions. He built up a close and productive relationship with the local press. For many years he was the CTC local touring adviser and gave much help and advice to cyclists from all parts of the world. Johnny often rode out with the Wednesday Wanderers. Many riders from Bournemouth CTC took part and he arranged with Eric Watson, the then editor, for the ride list to be included in their magazine. An arrangement that lasted many years. Also an active member of CC Weymouth, Johnny arranged and rode many long events (riding out with Janet to time trial starts) and actively encouraging young riders all the while. In May 2001 Johnny was awarded the coveted CTC Certificate of Merit, acknowledging his life long service to cycling in West Dorset. Appropriately this was presented at the 75th anniversary celebrations of the West Dorset Section on his 69th birthday. Johnny organised this weekend event which over 220 cyclists attended. In recent years Johnny coped with a long and painful illness, nursed all this time by Janet. Though unable to cycle he still managed to hold a weekly get together for ‘old timers’! Johnny died peacefully on 1st June 2020 aged 86yrs survived by wife Janet and son Vic.

They washed some of his clothes and looked after his bike until he was sufficiently recovered from his injuries to return to the scene. It was noted that the fall occurred during a private excursion. Alan Baker agreed to write a letter of appreciation and thanks to the couple, Dr. and Mrs. Percival. Rural Benches Who that has gained at length the wished-for Height, This brief, this simple wayside Call can slight, And rests not thankful? William Wordsworth
S
ome time ago Jim McDonald was approached by a couple of ladies who inquired if cyclists would contribute to the refurbishment or replacement of the Rest and Be Thankful bench at Witchampton. The question was put before your committee. Attempts to contact the local Parish Council to say that this is the type of project that we would support and asking for details of the work to present to the committee had no success. The recent adornment of warning tape prompted some research. The minutes of the Vale of Allen Parish Council meeting of 8th January this year states:-
“19.131h – QUARTER 3 FINANCES …. Discussion on the Rest and Be Thankful Seat replacement and the Hinton Fountain both have funds accumulated to undertake the necessary works.” Looking back, here are some earlier connections with rural benches: Cycle Ink May 2013. Nearly a year ago there was a “You’ve Been Framed” moment in West Stafford when the bench collapsed underneath some of our members. This prompted the Committee to realise that we use many rural benches throughout the district and we thought we should support the replacement of the bench at West Stafford. After many false starts trying to find the body responsible for
27

maintaining the bench our offer was well received but the bench had been repaired and no financial support was needed. Not wanting to let a good idea escape another venture was sought. John Hayter suggested that we could support a replacement of the bench adjacent to the bus shelter opposite The Cuckoo Inn at Hamptworth. Again identifying the appropriate body took some investigation but then joy of joys I knew the wife of one of the parish councillors. He took on the matter on board but again ran into some problems with ownership etc. Eventually I received the following e-mail:“You will be pleased to know that their is now a very solid bench in place at the Cuckoo so you can enjoy your lunch alfresco now summer is finally arriving - all at no charge to club funds”. A few months later we sought to have the bench at Merley Bridge refurbished. It is where we gather when our rides start from Merley Bridge and it was in a sorry state Jim McDonald tracked down the body with responsibility and he sent me this note:Hello Mike, I have spoken to the Greenspace Maintenance Team at Poole B.C. who confirm that the ground above the tunnel is in their ownership. They in turn have contacted the Highways Inspector who says the bench is in their regime for maintenance with funds allocated. They thank us for our kind offer of assistance. We will have to keep looking! Yours – Jim McD

Now that 'lock-down' restrictions have been relaxed to allow up to six individuals to meet for exercise, it is proposed to restart the Dawdlers and Pedalers rides programme from next Thursday 11 June. The rides will commence from the same start points shown on the programme, limited to 6 participants and subject to 2 metre social distancing. If more than 6 riders turn up at the start, it is suggested 2 groups are formed to be widely spaced on the road. It is unlikely any cafes will be open, although some outlets with a coffee machine are becoming available. Best bring your own supplies for a stop en route. I would be grateful if any leader would let me know if they do not wish to take their ride as listed in the published programme. I hope the above will allow us to get back to some semblance of normal and to meet up again.

Competitive Rollers
C
TC Wessex Cycling have a set of Competitive Rollers which are available for use by anyone either for a club event or on another occasion either within or outside CTC Wessex Cycling. There is no charge for their use. Daniel Armstrong at Velo Domestique 176-180 Seabourne Road (the top end of Southbourne Grove) looks after the rollers and they can be collected from there.
Š Mike Walsh
Terry Walsh refurbished the rollers some time ago and they have since been used on a number of occasions: at Velo Domestique, at a Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers event and at the St Peter’s School Sports Convention. The rollers can provide a very good evening for riders and spectators giving much fun. To discuss the set up please contact Terry on 01202 247888.
