CHAIRMAN / PRESIDENT: Julian James VICE CHAIRMAN - Vacant MINUTES SECRETARY: Alan Baker SECRETARY: Dave Mansfield TREASURER: Mike Walsh AUDITOR: Ralph Huckle Cycle Ink EDITOR: Shawn Shaw KITMASTER: Tony Clewes WEBSITE & COMPLIANCE: Keith Matthews RIGHT TO RIDE: Paul Turner CYCLE TRAINING: Steve Gray 07710 201358 Elected at the Annual General Meeting in October our committee meets four times a year and co-ordinates the group’s cycling activities and the clubruns of the various sections. Next committee meeting: 15 May 2019 - Kinson Conservative Club

‘W

e need a new editor . . .’ said Mike, ‘You’re just the fellow!’ underscoring his pitch with yet another glass of cider. - But I’ve no experience: new programme to learn: alien world of digital desk-toppublishing, I protested. - ‘You’ll be fine!’ his blarney tap turned full on. Thanks to my predecessors, Mike and Keith, the magazine layout is familiar; follow the pattern and with enough content all will be well. What can possibly go wrong ? . . . It is at this point that I remind myself that I don’t regularly read the whole newsletter. I make use of the runslist to select areas I would like to visit. Joining in with that section for the day because that looks like somewhere good to ride and at a pace I can live with (or feel up to!). I’d like to be reading bits about different trips our sections enjoy, making me think ‘I’d like to do that’ encouraging joining in for the next visit. Also bits about future club rides would be good. If you have volunteered to lead out next quarter let us know, especially if something fresh. ‘Why there?’ and ‘What for?’: guidance for those looking for the fresh: for ‘backyard’ exploration & adventure. Can it ever be ‘just a bike ride . . . ‘? The Thursday Riders have given themselves the challenge of visiting the three ‘County Towns’ this year. Dorchester and Salisbury this quarter, Winchester later. Thursday Rouleurs will repeat their spring and summer ‘marathons’ Please share your highs & lows (a few words & maybe a photo’) is enough. The next committee meeting is the deadline for contributions for the following quarters Cycle Ink. Send to: editor@wessexsr.org.uk Cycle Ink is the Newsletter of CTC Wessex Cycling, a Member Group of Cycling UK (Cyclists’ Touring Club). Views expressed in articles are personal to the writer and not necessarily those of the club.

Next Quarters Events Cyclist Picnic. June 30th 2019 - Damerham Village Hall - noon to 4pm

N

estling alongside the Allen River the Village Hall at Damerham provides a resplendent country setting for the CTC Wessex annual Cyclist Picnic Lunch.

Out for a ride? Then call in and have a drink with us ‘on the house’. Bring your lunch or buy a sandwich at the hall. Relax and enjoy the delightful setting. A more substantial lunch may be had at The Compasses public house close by. Many clubs have received an invite so your club may well be organising a group run to join us too. Check with your club. We will host organised rides out to the hall and back, details of which are in the runs list section in the centre of this magazine. You are welcome to come along with us and make a few new chums along the way and then some more over lunch.

Damerham village lies at the heart of a network of leafy lanes of the kind that time seems to have forgot. Pleasing gentle rural riding abounds through field patchwork and ancient copse. Open to all cyclists (not just our members) offering the chance to exchange chat, natter, and swap anecdotes over a bite and a drink in a beautiful spot.

Just ask anyone who has tested themselves against these rides! The Green Badge, with the event names emblazoned and the Golden Wyvern, is bestowed on these ‘Kings & Queens of Wessex’ cycling, honouring their seasons success and achievement. For 25yrs now these four events have drawn riders to our area from all over the UK and the entry can be quite cosmopolitan with American, Italian, Swedish, Australian, Belgian and Kiwi nationals among the 145 names on the Roll d’Honor. The Dorset Weekend starts at 2am Saturday morning setting out from Poole to ride 300km. After a good nights sleep The Dorset Coast 200 from Wareham with Studland Ferry crossing fills the second day of this cycle touring adventure. It is said that these two ‘shorter’ events make for a worthwhile weekend for those travelling from further afield. May Day bank holiday and the 400km (2pm start from Poole) adds to the wealth of lanes offered to our visiting riders. The end of May bank holiday further fills in the gaps with a whole body & mind workout on a carefully chosen 600kms of the Wessex countryside. For those whose ambitions are the Cordon Bleu events this series leaves a true appreciation of what is needed to successfully complete the Paris-Brest-Paris or the London-Edinburgh-London. This year: Hard boiled 300 - 13th April, then Dorset Coast 200 - 14th April Porkers 400 - 5th May Brimstone 600 - 25th May

The 100km Coastlet is also held during the Dorset Weekend.

A

s an ‘Audax Po pulaire’ it is an introduction to the world of the Audax event running the same day as the Dorset Coast 200, Sunday 14th April from Wareham.

With less distance to travel and more time to complete The Coastlet gives real time to enjoy good riding in country lanes with great scenery throughout. Enjoy too the social aspects of some group riding with the one common objective, to complete. Also there are comfy breaks for good cake and drinks along the way. Particular reverential awe is given to the lane out of Abbotsbury, past Abbot’s Kiln to Admiral Hardy’s monument. It is a tough climb but usually you can get to reward yourself with an ice cream at the monument. The gently rolling roads back to Wareham are full of the country charm imagined of Wessex and makes a pleasant run-in to the end. Here you can take time to rest the aching legs and socialise with other finishers over a mug or two back at HQ.

Social riding with local Road Racing Clubs.

S

ome of our riders like to go that bit quicker without committing to the Race. We have Road Racing Clubs in the area who have Social Rides amongst their calendar of events. They welcome new members and allow riders to join in before asking them to take up membership. Poole Wheelers have a Wednesday evening ride starting 7pm from Poole Park Cricket Pavilion. Mondays they hold a Women only ride. Google their Website or see Facebook page for full details. Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers also have evening Social rides. Again check out their website or Facebook page for full details. If you want to raise your game and try your hand at the quicker pace (17mph+) check out one of these and see if it is for you. Tom (BunRuns) has become a regular with the Poole Wheelers evening sessions. He is enjoying the challenge and sharpening his cycling.

We liked it so much . . . going back for more

I

t was last year, 29th September, that the BunRun visited a new venue over in Hazelbury Bryan. It is a farm and at that farm there is a barn and in that barn there is a caravan and a mismatch of tables and chairs all very neatly arranged with bales of straw, and furniture displaying craft items. Rural. Friendly. Good coffee and lovely temptastylicious cakes. The sun was beaming and from the yard setting, the view out over the Blackmore Vale lit the idyll of the mind as sheep safely grazed beyond the hedges. We were met by two ladies of the West Dorset CTC and we formed, refectory like, and set to chatting, chomping and sipping. Leaving Wimborne Square just after 9 we had made our way through Blandford up to Bulbarrow. Our route dropped off the escarpment into Iberton for the unfamiliar thread of lanes about Leigh and Kitford. A goose at the farm pond was taken aback at our sudden appearance, but quickly recovered to perform it’s watchdog duties, hissing menace. Moving along, we stopped as the Whipper-in and his hounds (standing as high as your crossbar!) emerged from the hedge. In a continuous stream, a country cavalcade of generations on pony and hunter followed on. Our route now crossed three fords. The first with a modern footbridge: the second one dry: the third with an ancient packhorse bridge alongside. Full value Cycle Tourng experience! There’s no guarantee of the same high excitement but we will be happy to settle for country roads, coffee and good cakes when we return on 20th April. 9 o’clock sunny side of Wimborne Square if you would care to share 50 miles in BunRun company; a couple of hours each way; enthusiasm essential . . .

National bites

T

he news that the national Tourist Competition and, by association, the Mille Miglia competition, is to be discontinued was announced from HQ this last quarter. Various events ranging from time reliability trials to map reading and treasure hunts tested the skills of the Touring Cyclist. Wessex DA members often rated in the top 100 incidental to them participating in Audax events. Controversial questions such as ‘How many ball bearings in a bottom bracket?’ became redundant with sealed BBs. Wessex DA for a while organised one of the Map Reading Q&A ride events: remember Search Me? HQ says “If anyone would like to administrate the tourist competition locally for your region, please get in touch.” Congratulations go to Annmarie Winter 4th place Female Vet & 7th Female overall Highest Placed CTC Wessex Cycling rider in the 2018 Tourist Competition

T

he British Cycle Quest remains if you fancy the more extreme challenge. Not heard of that one either? ‘The British Cycle Quest is all about getting outside and cycling to find as many points of interest across the whole of Britain as you can.’ The CUK website declares. Bicycling Orienteering is probably the best way to convey the concept. CyclingUK members may now benefit from a Youth Hostel membership discount of 10% A 10% discount on individual and group YHA accommodation and pre-booked meals between 5 March 2019 – 28 February 2020 (excluding all school holiday periods). Members of Cycling UK, YHA members or not, may obtain this discount. Discount available online www.yha.org.uk and bookings made by phone.

Tri-Vets 100? Triennial Veterans 100 that is. An organised 100 miles or Kilometres event held in either June or July every three years (rides last took place in 2016) for our Veteran members (over 50 yrs old). Coffee, Lunch and Tea stops are all provided in the entry fee. Once organised by DAs some member groups continue to hold them. ‘Many people enjoy this event because not only is it a challenge of fitness and stamina but also because it is a wonderful, sociable day out in like-minded company.’ Keep an eye on the National Magazine or the CyclingUK website to find your nearest event.

CTC WESSEX CYCLING RUNSLIST We organise gentle and more demanding group rides each week - to suit most tastes. Each group has a different style and meets different needs. * * * For beginners, and those returning to cycling after a long break No membership required. TERRY’S INFORMAL RIDE TO BURLEY every Saturday is along a route intended for beginners but attracts cyclists from all disciplines and all abilities as a social activity. There is no designated leader and no back up provided. Start 09:00 at Waitrose Supermarket, Christchurch or just make your own way to the Old Farmhouse Tearooms, Burley for 10:00 ( Contact Terry Walsh on 01202247888 for more details) * * * For an introduction to club riding: PEDAL SUNDAY. The runs are approximately 30 to 50 miles, depending on the season, at an easy pace suitable for solos and tandems where the beautiful scenery can be appreciated. With stops for morning coffee, a picnic lunch and occasionally an afternoon cake stop group members will make you most welcome and be very happy to natter on matters cycling. THURSDAY DAWDLERS Rides are at a modest pace but don't really dawdle. Most members are seniors but all are welcome. The members share an interest in the countryside, coast, buildings and views. The ride stops at cafes for elevenses and tea but members always carry their own picnic lunch. * * * Moderate Paced THURSDAY RIDERS group aim to provide moderately paced sociable rides of approximately 40 to 50 miles using minor roads, to explore Dorset and the New Forest. We stop for coffee, picnic or pub lunch and often afternoon tea. A good friendly day on the bike * * * BunRuns are Saturday rides for improvers: those looking to step up apace and want to see if they can cross the divide to the quicker groups. 50 miles at a moderate pace (average 13mph) up hill down dale stopping once for coffee & cake. * * * Medium Paced THE “INTERS” are a happy go lucky bunch who look forward to Sunday rides of 60-80 miles in the winter and 80+ during the summer. There are sociable stops for morning coffee, lunch (own packed or pub/cafe where available) and for afternoon cake. There is a fairly wide range of ages and abilities in the group. Occasional weekend trips are organised and there is a relaxed attitude should a break "go off the front." TUESDAY TOASTERS. From Wimborne Square to Blandford, a leg loosener shaking out the knots. * * * Somewhat quicker THE SATURDAY 60 and both ROULEURS groups take their riding that bit more seriously and produce a quicker riding experience whilst still taking in the joys of being ‘tourists’. Destinations: Coffee only Sat & Sun, while Thurs has a lunch stop too and on occasions raises the bar to 100+miles covered for the day.

Plans to improve facilities on Magna Road between the Poole boundary and Ringwood Road have been postponed to coordinate with work in Poole. Improved links between Springbourne and the Curzon Road railway bridge. Opportunities to make the traffic signals at the junction of Holdenhurst Road and Ashley Road more cycle friendly. Possibility at two gaps in the network along Castle Lane West. One is near the junction with Mount Pleasant Drive and the other is by the shopping parade near Castlepoint. Refurbished and improved signing and lining on footways adjacent to Castlepoint. Cycle Monitoring. A cycle monitoring system is being upgraded for Bournemouth and Poole which will give us much better data on cycle flows in key locations on the network. The new counters will detect aluminium and carbon framed bikes.

PRESENT:- Julian James (Chairman); Bob Chittenden; Mike Gordon; Stephen Gray (Cycle Training Coordinator); John Hayter; Dave Mansfield (Secretary); Jim McDonald; Paul Rush; Mike Walsh (Treasurer); and Alan Baker (Minute Secretary). IN ATTENDANCE:- Rob Ward. The Chairman thanked those Office holders and Committee Members who had retired at the recent AGM of the Group: Paul Rush (President and Chairman); Mike Walsh (Secretary); Bob Courtney and John Jackson (Committee Members). He welcomed those who had assumed Office and joined the Committee: Dave Mansfield (Secretary); Mike Gordon and John Hayter (Committee Members). 2. APOLOGIES:- Keith Matthews and Paul Turner. 3. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING:- The Minutes of the Meeting held on 15 August 2018 were APPROVED, proposed Mike Walsh, seconded Dave Mansfield, carried nem con. 4. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES:- There were no matters arising from the Minutes of the last Meeting not covered elsewhere on the Agenda. 5. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT:- The Chairman had no matters to report. 6. SECRETARY’S REPORT:- Mike Walsh reported that he had submitted the Group’s Annual Return for 2018 to National Office, his final one given his recent retirement. Alan Baker reported that, in recent weeks, National Office (N.O.) had issued two e-mailings to the Wessex Group membership on our behalf. These were Notice of the recent AGM, and details of the Group Christmas Lunch. Prior to this, both Mike Walsh and Alan Baker had complained to N.O. that they were being denied access to the contact details of the Group’s membership, an assertion admitted by N.O. as they were still working out a policy that would meet the requirements of the new Data Protection Regulations.

As a result of these discussions, N.O. asked if we would welcome a member of their staff to our AGM, and Jenny Box, Head of Development for England, attended. This was followed by a request that a member of staff be allowed to attend the Awards Presentation after the Christmas Lunch. After discussion with the Treasurer it was agreed to respond by inviting two members of N.O. staff, or one plus partner, as guests of the Group, to both the Lunch and the Presentation. Unfortunately, N.O. chose the same day to hold a mandatory training day for all N.O. staff and so our invitation could not be accepted. A further outcome of the discussions with N.O. staff was the news that N.O. operates two databases of contact details. The main database, covering CUK membership details, is known by the acronym CARE; the other, known as Engaging Networks, is used, for example, to mail “Cycleclips”. The two databases are operated independently, and members whose contact details are held on both databases must separately notify the operators of each database of changes to their details. Alan Baker reported that he had been informed by Dave Langley that to date only 23 bookings had been received for the Christmas Lunch, 13 of which were from members associated with the Thursday Rouleurs. The effectiveness of the mass e-mailing by N.O. was questioned, given that some Group members did not receive the AGM Notice, and it was agreed to use both Facebook and the Group’s website to further publicise the Lunch. Alan Baker was asked to enquire how many of the e-mails issued by N.O. were rejected. 7. TREASURER’S REPORT:- Mike Walsh once again reported that the Group’s financial position was healthy, with sufficient funds available to meet current spending plans. 8. RIGHT TO RIDE REPORT:- Paul Turner reported in absentia that his quarterly report will be available at the beginning of December for inclusion in the Group Newsletter. 9. AWARD OF GROUP TROPHIES 2018:- After much discussion, it was AGREED to award the trophies as follows: Sartain Cup to Graham Dore for successfully undertaking a 3,750 mile coast-to-coast ride across the USA from the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, to Yorktown, Virginia, on a tandem with his unsighted stoker, Steve Bateman. This ride raised funds for the Lions Club Charity.

Riders’ Cup to Alan Young for his bike ride across Canada with companion Clive, from the Pacific coast of Canada to Cape Spear on Newfoundland, the most easterly point in North America, a distance of over 4,800 miles. Tourist Shield to Tristram Hobson who, together with friends, rode from Vancouver south along the Pacific Coast, via San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, to the Mexican border, a distance of over 1,800 miles, raising money for Julia’s House, a local hospice for children with life-limiting conditions. Ron Cook Rosebowl to Bob, Joan and Jackie Courtney for their individual and collective hard work for the Group over several years, including building up and sustaining the success of the Sunday Inters ride group. 10. APPOINTMENT OF VICE–CHAIRMAN:- It was AGREED to carry forward this item to the next Committee Meeting. 11. APPOINTMENT OF NEWSLETTER EDITOR:- Mike Walsh reported that he was in discussions with a possible successor.

12. REPORT ON GRIDIRON EVENT 2018, AND PROSPECTS FOR 2019 EVENT:- Mike Walsh reported that the recently-run event had attracted a full field of 1,000 entrants but, with extremely wet weather on the day, less than 300 completed the course. The 2019 event did not, at present, have an Organiser, and Mike stressed the importance to the Group of continuing to promote the event: it was popular and had a very good reputation; and the surplus generated from securing a full field allowed the Group to support many of its other activities, especially those in the community. 13. REEF RIDES 2019:- Paul Rush reported that the event held in June of this year had been very poorly supported. He said he would like the event to continue but it seemed likely he would be out of the country during much of the first half of next year, and he had been unable to find an Organiser to take his place. He agreed that finding a new Organiser for the Gridiron should take precedence and so it seemed likely that the Reef event would be suspended for 2019 at least.
