Summer 2017
The Quarterly Magazine of CTC Wessex Cycling in & around Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch Well here we are again. I have changed the runs list presentation again in order to enlarge the print size but still make it an integral part of the newsletter. Being integral saves me some work at a key time. I REPEAT that I am looking for a volunteer to edit just one of the future issues. Please contact me to discuss. The number of events below is greatly reduced as John and Sheila Ward are not running their September Audax rides this year. John has said that they will be reinstated next year. Peter Loakes is passing on the organisation of the Coast and Coastlet next year, and the Dorset Downs has stopped. Shawn is still organising his Super Randonneurs series with good numbers this year which is a London Edinburgh London year. We are also seeing a change of organiser of the Gridiron with the new person understudying John Jackson who has stayed for another year. Paul Rush our chairman has continued to ask for volunteers to support our local cycling. Is it you? I am as always very thankful for all those who have made submissions. A photograph and a few words is enough and in any format. Mike Walsh

Heart Support Group
By Keith Matthews
The more eagle eyed of you may have noticed a monthly ride labelled Heart Support Group on the runs list. We have been running for some time now so I thought it appropriate to fill in some details on who we are! I am a long term CTC member and used to be area secretary and an active member of the Wessex CTC. I suppose I am still active really although that feels a bit of a fraud these days. The gradual change and falling back is old age of course, but in my case principally it was a cardiac arrest (while out cycling!) which caused the re-think. Recovering from this I was helped by an organisation called the Poole Heart Support Group which is a self-help bunch who just get on with things and do not sit around swapping symptoms. Of course, being a baby boomer rather than a millennial I ended up helping out and now I’m the PHSG Chairman. I found a few others in the group who liked to get their bikes out and some like me who were looking forward to a relaxed retirement drifting along the lanes only to get hit in the chest literally. We started a cycling group within the PHSG and decided to meet once a month and when it proved popular we arranged for the PHSG Group to be a proper group within CTC Wessex Cycling. Of course, people come into it from the Heart Group and are not CTC members, but many have subsequently joined and many have also joined in with other groups. From the other side, some CTC members have developed heart problems and then joined us, turning the thing on its head. Any CTC rider is of course welcome to ride with us. You don’t have to have a heart problem but it helps. That sounds all wrong doesn’t it! We have a little database of about 30 people who have ridden or expressed an interest and a couple of days before each monthly ride get sent a little reminder email. Generally about 8 to 12 turn up which makes for about the right size group. We ride through the winter although cold is not good for heart people, and we try not to do rain either so we have a morning hot-line to say if the ride is going ahead or not. We don’t cancel very often! Continued….

Cardiac rehabilitation experts are unanimous in the view that controlled regular exercise is the best remedy, and cycling is favoured particularly. Our rides vary from 12 miles in winter to 25 in summer starting at 10:00 and then we are home for lunch. Come and try us out if you think you’re hard enough! Are you trained in CPR? Picture 1 on inside front cover The group on the bridge over the Spur Road. The only use for it that I can think of! This run was from West Parley to Christchurch and back. Picture 2 on inside front cover The group at the top of Creech Hill on our “Purbeck Loop” from Wareham Quay.

New Tuesday Rouleurs
By Mike Walsh
Ali Mackenzie is setting up an informal Tuesday Rouleurs ride starting from Wimborne Square at 9:30. Initially the frequency cannot be confirmed but if sufficient riders turn up the format can become more firm. I copy below an extract from Ali’s e-mail. It’s an informal gathering/ride - the idea is that every Tues 9.30am, Wimborne Square to Blandford (via Cow Grove, Langton Long) is available as a informal gathering and relaxed shortish ride – with the proviso that at worst ‘you’re the only one!’ but more than likely there will be some other friendly cycle buddies to join you for the pleasant route to Blandford, followed by much coffee and cake – newbies being looked after there and back (unless they’re ‘the only one’! - unlikely) – please feel free to post my mobile for new folk to contact me 07500717191; I can generally only make 2 Tues out of 4 due to work. Folk can of course feel free to add loops before meeting in Wimborne, and plan their own way home after Blandford.

Back on the Bike
By David Birch
Progress is finally being made, albeit on three wheels. I have A great team of workers and volunteers from Moors Valley Country Park, and not least Charlie and Terry of Wessex Accessible Cycling all of whom have helped me to get to this stage. Next stage, back on my own bike, perhaps by the end of June?? This is still my goal. Thankyou to everyone for your continued support and contact. Please are you able to forward this to all who have known me and who might be pleased to see the attached photo taken today before our ride with www.wessexacc.org.uk Kind regards Dave

The Reef Rides 11th June Unfortunately we have had to cancel the proposed Reef Rides this year but we have scheduled them in for next year.
By Paul Rush CTC Wessex Cycling Minutes 17th May By Alan Baker MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING 17 MAY 2017 1. PRESENT:- Paul Rush (Chairman); Bob Chittenden; Bob Courtney; John Jackson; Julian James; Jim McDonald; Keith Matthews (Welfare Officer/Registrar/Membership Secretary/Website Master); Mike Walsh (Secretary/Treasurer); John Ward; and Alan Baker (Minute Secretary). In attendance: Steve Hayes. 2. APOLOGIES:- Steve Gray (Cycle Training Coordinator); Paul Turner (Right to Ride Representative). 3. MINUTES OF LAST MEETING:- It was NOTED that Jim McDonald had been present at the Meeting held 15 February 2017. The Minutes of the Meeting were then APPROVED. 4. MATTERS ARISING:- There were no matters arising from the Minutes of the last Meeting not covered elsewhere on the Agenda. 5. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT:- Paul Rush reported: (i) the Borough of Poole had decided against sending a delegation, which would have included himself, to the Bikeability Conference in Hull, 09-10 May, for protocol reasons. 6. SECRETARY’S REPORT:- Nothing to report. 7. TREASURER’S REPORT:- Once again Mike Walsh was able to report that the Group’s financial position was healthy. Last October’s Gridiron event made a surplus well in excess of £1,000, and CTC National Office’s annual contribution of £200 to the Group had been received. Principal items of expenditure had been Newsletter costs and hire of the Committee Room. The present balance is in excess of £3,000. The Treasurer reminded Committee Members that the Group had funds available to support approved activities including cycle training and for the training of instructors. 8. RIGHT TO RIDE REPORT:- Paul Turner was unable to be present because of another commitment. His report on recent developments will be published in the Newsletter.
7

9. APPOINTMENT OF VICE-CHAIRMAN:- Paul Rush reminded the Meeting that following the resignation of Jill Burden and given his own expected absences from some Committee Meetings over the course of the next several months, it would be prudent for the Committee to elect a Vice-Chairman without delay. AGREED nem con, proposed Mike Walsh, seconded Jim McDonald, to elect Julian James as Vice-Chairman. 10. GRIDIRON 2017:- John Jackson reported that Daniel Armstrong, proprietor at Velo Domestique, had agreed to take over organisation of the event next year. He will shadow John this year during the latter’s final year as organiser. This year’s event, to be held on 08 October, has already attracted 347 paid entries and 6 juniors (no entry fee). With a further Mailchimp circulation due in June the event appears to be well on track to once again attract 1,000 entries. However, more entries from women and girls are being sought, and Jenny Cocking, Daniel’s partner, will use social media to try to achieve this. Gift incentives for all starters are being considered, e.g. a buff in CTC Wessex livery. Finally, John reported that the Volunteers’ Buffet will take place on 01 July at Velo Domestique. 11. PICNIC 2017:- It was NOTED that the Group Picnic will not take place this year. 12. REEF RIDES FROM THE COMMUNITY CENTRE AT COLEHILL:- Paul Rush reported that because of adverse developments it had been decided not to launch the inaugural Reef Rides this year. However, it was hoped to run these next year, again in June. 13. RELATIONSHIP WITH CTC NATIONAL OFFICE:- Paul Rush introduced the paper that had been circulated to Members. He said that if there was support from the Committee he would publish the paper in the next issue of the Group Newsletter in order to seek feedback from the wider Group membership. If this feedback justified further debate it could be brought to the AGM in October. After much discussion it was AGREED not to pursue the matter further. 14. AWARD OF GROUP TROPHIES:- Mike Walsh reminded the Meeting that discussion about the award of Group trophies for 2017 needed to start now and be concluded at the next Meeting (in August). The Committee NOTED that The Sartain Cup was usually awarded in recognition of service to the Group; that The Riders’ Cup and The Tourist Shield were usually awarded for meritorious cycling achievements; and that the award of The Ron Cook Rosebowl is in the gift of previous and current holders of the award. It was AGREED that Mike Walsh should consult Malcolm Howell about award of The Ron Cook Rosebowl, and that there would be further discussion about the award of all trophies at the next Meeting.

15. ANY OTHER BUSINESS:(i) John Jackson noted that Cycling UK (CTC) was sponsoring the broadcasting of the Giro d’Italia on Eurosport’s UK channel. (ii) Bob Chittenden reported that some Group members were going on a tour that did not appear in the Group’s Runs List. Mike Walsh responded that the tour leader would not be covered by CTC Leader Insurance as this only covered rides that were on the List. (iii) Jim McDonald reported that of late few Dawdlers were attending the joint Potterers and Dawdlers Sunday Runs, and that numbers of Potterers were also modest. (iv) John Ward reported that although he would be once again organising the New Forest Autumn events in September he had decided against including a 50 km ride this year in order to keep the organisational effort required to a manageable level. However, he hoped to include the 50 km ride in 2018. 16. NEXT MEETING:- 7.30 pm Wednesday 16 August 2017, Kinson Conservative Club.

Montacute School
By Mike Walsh
Poole to Paris Fundraising Adventure FRENCH AFTERNOON The school enjoyed french food, learnt some french words, sang 'Frere Jacques' and had a quick dance before they waved goodbye to their cyclists...... Our six intrepid cyclists have started their massive cycle ride from Poole to Paris to raise ÂŁ5,000 to provide therapy support and equipment for our pupils! The staff and friends involved are paying for the entire adventure, from ferry crossings to the hire of a back up vehicle, and their overnight accommodation on campsites! So ANYTHING raised through sponsorship and donations will go directly to support our pupils. Find out more at https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/poole2paris Members of CTC Wessex Rouleurs and newer Cycling UK members, are embarking on their cycling fundraising adventure from Poole to Paris to raise funds for a local special school, Montacute. Due to funding cuts, the school has had to start raising money for specialist equipment that enables their pupils to do things that the rest of us take for granted: sit, stand and walk! ...... Three members of the group only started cycling 3 months ago and have been put through their paces, training and preparation, by Paula, Maggie and Judy from the Rouleurs.

Right to Ride Report - May 2017
By Paul M. Turner
Bournemouth Wimborne Road Cycle Lanes. Work is progressing on the design of cycle lanes between Richmond Hill roundabout and Cemetery junction. The intention to provide continuous cycle lanes on both sides of the road. Lansdowne. Bournemouth has been awarded £8.5million as part of the Growth Deal Fund for improvements to the Lansdowne business district. Walking, cycling and public transport facilities will be improved helping to ensure that future development will be sustainable. http://lansdownebournemouth.co.uk/ Proposals nearby to make significant improvements at the Lansdowne between Holdenhurst Road and Wellington Road, have been paused to ensure a joined up approach. Wallisdown Road. Bournemouth has won £1.33 million for schemes along Wallisdown Road. We will liaise with Poole on exactly how this is spent, but this should result in some road safety benefits for cyclists and pedestrians. Town Centre. A gate with a cycle gap has now been installed at the St Peters Road end of Beale Place. This has resolved the issue of the temporary barriers being moved around impeding cyclists, although there is still a loading bay marked across the cycle gap. The Yelverton Road end of Beale Place now had two planters installed with gaps for cyclists. The Albert Road end has a temporary 2 barrier with a cycle gap due to ongoing building work in the vicinity. A new gate with a cycle gap is to be installed shortly. The shared pedestrian cycle route outside the BH2 cinema development is now complete with a significant amount of additional cycle parking. 2017-18 Programme. Bournemouth is finalising the 2017-18 LTP programme. We are looking at a number of quick wins and other gap filling schemes. If anyone has any gaps, closed streets, one way streets or turning bans that are causing a particular problem, please let us know asap. · Bournemouth - Poole Quiet Route. Bournemouth and Poole are working together to get this quieter and relatively flat alternative to some busy main roads properly signed during 2017-18. It also provides an alternative to the Prom in July and August. · Gaps on Existing Strategic Routes include signing the Lansdowne to Wessex Fields route. · cycle parking issues in Winton and hope to install some additional stands. · discuss potential support and involvement in communication of new cycle routes. A338 & Links to Bournemouth Airport. Background work continues to be carried out on possible links between North Bournemouth and Bournemouth Airport. Bike Week will take place in June. Although the Bournemouth & Poole Councils has limited resources, perhaps through our connections with cycling groups, organise some rides or events during the week. Poole's Cycling Celebration takes place on Thursday 27 July on Poole Quay until 10 pm. It may be possible to organise a ride from Central Bournemouth to Poole Quay along our relaunched Bournemouth-Poole quiet cycle route.

Stour Valley Way – Update from Michael Rowland, Manager Bournemouth Parks gave comprehensive report on the current work to create a safe and enjoyable path suitable for pedestrians and cyclists between Hengistbury Head & Kingston Lacy. The purpose of this is to reduce the pressure on sensitive habitats and at the same time encouraging everyone to enjoy the countryside. The path from Hengistbury Head to Tuckton is complete and the path through Tuckton Tea Gardens is nearing completion. Work on Hick’s Farm, Throop is due to commence in early April. The long term plan is to create a Stour Nature Park and Officers will be engaging with Landowners to ensure they are on board. Future work plans will be shared with the Forum.
Poole Partnership working with Poole and Bournemouth Following a January review of the trial, the Senior Walking and Cycling Officer for the Borough of Poole, Peter Wickett will now spend one day a week at Bournemouth Town Hall for the foreseeable future. He will continue to work closely with the acting Cycling Officer for Bournemouth Borough Council, giving assistance with cycling issues and projects. Hamworthy cycle routes The physical and way-finding improvements to various routes in the Hamworthy area are nearing completion. Proposed 2017/18 programme Alder Road Corridor A new cycle route on quiet streets between Talbot Primary School and Pottery Junction is being investigated. It would offer a realistic alternative to using the busy, narrow and steep A3040 for through cycling, as well as connecting to four schools, the Bourne Valley Greenway, Branksome Recreation Ground, and the retail and employment park at Redlands. Poole to Bournemouth cycle route Poole and Bournemouth have agreed to jointly fund way-finding improvements to the quiet route that is the alternative to the promenade in the summer. Work is planned to be complete before the restrictions commence in July. Bikeability Poole will be providing cycle training for children in the Borough throughout the year, mostly through schools. The DfT have funded at least 407 training places for combined Level 1/2, 41 places for Level 3, and 63 places for Balance. A new cycle track along the south side of Poole Road is currently under construction by Dorset CC. This will improve access to the Country Park from Upton Cross, providing new opportunities for traffic-free leisure and utility cycling. Trial of “light segregation” - Members of the Cycle Liaison Advisory Group in Poole have been asked to suggest locations that may be suitable for trialling “light segregation.” contact that the Forum can liaise with. It is thought that Hampshire Police are also considering the Give Space – Be Safe project.

Links to/through Upton Country Park Dorset CC was planning to extend its Upton cycle network further east along Poole Road. Initially, it will be as far as the new car park (opposite Pony Drive), to provide traffic-free access to the park. Subject to funding, it may be possible to extend the route as far as the main UCP access road, linking up with the wider cycling network. A later stage is planned to improve the existing cycle facilities around the roundabout at Upton Road / Longmeadow Lane. The new shoreline path (currently under construction) will provide a new cycling link around the edge of Holes Bay, to link the cycling route from Holes Bay Road to the Symes Road subway. Upton Country Park The new shared use path along the Holes Bay shoreline, between Symes Road and Upton Bypass, should be available for use by cyclists by Easter. The only paths in Upton Country Park that cycling is formally permitted on are shown in red on the plan below.

Of these the most significant will be permitting contra-flow cycling in the one way section of Green Road, Winton. Wimborne Road Richmond Hill to Cemetery Junction. Throop to Hurn route. Slow progress, but Bmth are to form a direct access to the River Stour footbridge which has already been replaced at a width to enable cycling. Bmth Airport support this route as part of their access plan. Maybe soon? Riverside Avenue Castle Lane East. Junction redesign in progress. Some work already done to ease access to the path through the open space. Wallisdown Road Poole and Bournemouth are working on a cycle safety scheme, No detail yet but an aspiration for full segregation. Ringwood Road Longham to Bear Cross Work started to cut back vegetation on the existing path and improvements to be carried out nr Millhams Recycling and Bear X roundabout. Expected soon. Wessex Fields Consultation has started on the development of the land n. of Bmth Hospital. Long term but cycling is definitely seen as part of the strategy to limit car parking and traffic growth. The scheme also has a direct link to the Hospital from A338 slip road. Cycling provision is shown as shared cycle /footway. We have asked for adequate design standards if this is the preferred solution. Stour Nature Park This is a joint Local Authority scheme to form a continuous cycle/walking route from Hengistbury Head to Kingston Lacy. Work is being done on an “opportunity” basis but a surprising (To me ) amount has already been done or is well advanced. New footbridge crossings of the River Stour are part of the plan. Heathland mitigation is one of the sources of funding. For information on any of these schemes or attendance at the Cycling Forum contact John Hayter. tandemist93@talktalk.net 01202 510706.

Bob Wareing- RIP
By Bmth Jubilee Wheelers
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers issued the following on the 25th May 2017:It is with the deepest of regret that we to have to record that Bob Wareing passed away in Christchurch McMillan Unit during the night, aged 82. Sadly Bob had been on a downward health spiral since developing liver problems around the turn of the year and since was mostly hospitalised in Royal Bournemouth. There despite endless examination by a team of top consultants it seems that none could positively diagnose the cause of his weakening and he was recently transferred to the Christchurch McMillan unit. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go to Bob’s wife Barbara, daughter Katrina, and son Alex.

John Mortimer- RIP
By Peter Warhurst
John Mortimer Obituary – by Peter Warhurst President Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers It is with great sadness that we pass on the news that John Mortimer, a long standing member of the Jubilee, has unfortunately passed away aged 85. John and wife Anne came to Wessex in the early 1950s from the Heathrow area of London, when John joined the police. They were both experienced club cyclists having been members of the Westerley RC since their teens. John had been a prolific champion time triallist with the Westerley, having held the National RRA Tricycle record for the London to Brighton and back trip (the most prestigious of the RRA out-and-home routes), the National RTTC Tricycle competition records at both 50 and 100 miles, as well as a number of other Westerley bicycle and tricycle club records. Fortunately John and Anne chose to join the BJW and straight away became valued members, with both always willing to help in all sorts of ways, and John continuing his impressive time trialling exploits, being third counter in three Jubilee record teams, two at 100 miles and one at 12 hours. In 1975 he took second place in the Wessex RC 24 hours event. But as the years with the Jubilee progressed John and Anne’s love of club riding and touring gradually took over from the pull of time trials. Naturally their two children, Martin and Sue were brought up as cyclists and had a year or two as Jubilee members. John, usually with Anne at his side, was always to the fore in being available for marshalling club and open events, with Anne often to be seen at the refreshment stall. John held the position of BJW General Secretary from 1979 until 1988; he was always a man who gave more than he took from cycling and the Jubilee was the main beneficiary from both John and Anne. All of us owe him a great deal of thanks. He was a very strong rider on club runs, with his very broad, strong body there was usually a tussle to sit on his back wheel. This made it particularly sad that his last years, with his beloved Anne steadfastly by his side, were spent fighting the dreadfully debilitating disease which ended his life.
