Winter 2017

The Quarterly Magazine of CTC Wessex Cycling in & around Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch The two major events of CTC Wessex Cycling have just been and gone. The first was the Gridiron (with an entry limit of 1,000) which was oversubscribed and brought many smiles at least when the riders finished. The second was the AGM which was attended by 23. No matter what the committee do to attract more members this number remains constant. I have told the committee that I believe the limited number means that CTC Wessex Cycling is meeting all the local needs. I have received a comment regarding our use of the coffee stops. Would you all please respect the other users especially their personal space remembering that you are often in Lycra. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Knights of the Road

Whilst out on a short Sunday run to Lymington I had the misfortune to drop my chain which was wedged solid between the chainring and chainstay. As I didn't have the necessary tools to effect a repair I was effectively marooned. As luck would have it your Sunday Dawdlers on seeing my plight stopped and asked me if I needed any assistance, which I was only to grateful to accept. We had to split my chain and then fit a quick link that they very generously let me have. I then joined them for the short ride to Keyhaven. Paul and John are the only two names I can recall (I'am awful at remembering names) but there was five in the group. So a big thumbs up to your cycling knights, from a very appreciative fellow cyclist. Many thanks Peter.

Right to Ride Report - November 2017 By Paul M. Turner Bournemouth Tuckton Roundabout The council is hoping to reduce the number of crashes by altering the entrances and exits to lower traffic speeds, improve accessibility through the provision of the crossings and to reduce cycle collisions by providing facilities to bypass the roundabout. The proposals also include widening the road near the Tesco Express on Tuckton Road to allow deliveries to be made without heightening congestion in the area. Wick village resident John Maynard, said: “In principle they have got to do something about it. Crossing Tuckton Bridge is a must because it’s dangerous. I’m not sure if the road as set out in the plans will be wide enough to allow vehicles to unload and not block the rest of the road still.” However, Allan Lilley, a cyclist, also from Wick, supported the council. “I think they are trying to do the best job they can. It’s not an easy situation because you are confined with the amount of space available. I hadn’t realised until the officer told me, just how many collisions there have been at the roundabout. The roundabout was recently listed among some 80 ‘accident blackspots’ in Bournemouth.” Compiling this report was Phil Jones of Phil Jones Associates, the most up to date cycle design guidance; Highways England’s Interim Advice Note 195/16 Cycle Traffic and the Strategic Road Network, and Lucy Marstrand MCIHT, MSc, BA (Cambridge MA) (Hons), Associate, a former Cycling and Walking for Bournemouth Borough Council.

Poole The town centre side of Backwater Channel in Poole is changing. A masterplan is in place for the future expansion of the Port and the various development sites along West Street and West Quay. The road network for this area was approved in 2015 and we have already made some changes focused on pedestrian and cyclist improvements on West Street and West Quay Road; including new, safer pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes, especially proposed crossing old Poole Bridge and turning to the right on Poole Quay. !Our aims for Townside Access deliver a more consistent cycling and pedestrian network with better connectivity to the town centre and upgrade crossing facilities creating a local identity at Townside making can be described as: The planning, design and maintenance of public spaces; maximising local community assets, aspirations and the area's potential with the intention of creating public spaces to promote people's health, happiness and well-being. Aspirations to create a local identity for Townside were defined in the 2015 Poole Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document and include: steady vehicle flows on strategic and main routes: reliable through-put of traffic, efficient access to the port, wide pavements, cycle lanes Townside Access programme - Sterte Avenue West: deliver a new signalised junction to allow traffic to turn right onto Holes Bay A350, without needing to use the Hunger Hill junction. It also provides a new pedestrian crossing across Holes Bay Road. Marston Road: enabling works to permit a later change in Phase 2 of the direction of traffic, from oneway to two-way. It will allow effective circulation of traffic between West Street and West Quay Road; designed into its original construction in 2011. Phase 2 - 2018-2028 - Hunger Hill junction: improve the efficiency of the junction together with more direct and safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. Changing the direction of traffic on West Street (towards the bridges only) and West Quay Road (towards Hunger Hill only). Phase 3 - 2019-2021 - Hunger Hill to Poole Bridge: completing the links for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Right to Ride Representative CTC Wessex Cycling

Full Moon Rides

By John

This year there were three rides on the Friday evenings closest to the Sepember, October and November Full Moons. Things started badly with a terrible forecast for the September ride and only the ride leader being in Bournemouth Square at 7.00 pm ready to ride! Much better for the October ride when eight cyclists crossed the Sanbanks Ferry to The Bankes Arms, Studland. Suitably refreshed we were rewarded by a wonderful moon and all the scents coming off the heath at night. Magical. The November ride was out through quiet roads, chines and clifftops to the Jolly Sailor at Poole Quay. Some stopped at the pub. Others went off in search of chips! The return route was along Baiter past a fishing competition and then along the seafront back to Bournemouth Pier. The demographics of the Jolly Sailor ride were seven cyclists out, five workers and two retired. Four women and three men riding. We were very pleased to welcome Lawrence Harrell to the ride. Lawrence is the Bournemouth Council Cycling Officer. You can contact him at highways@bournemouth.gov.uk if you have suggestions about improving cycling in Bournemouth.

My First Audax

By Nigel Lee

Well today was my first crack at the Gridiron and my first AUDAX oh and my first ride involving more than 2 cyclists. My Elliptigo normally travels about 30 miles at weekends along the flat ground of the Sussex coast so 100k on the undulating roads of the New Forest was going to be a real test. I arrived early knowing I may need all the daylight hours. From the moment I walked into the control centre I was put at my ease by the warm welcome of not only the officials but also my fellow participants. Whilst awaiting the off with my trusty steed I fielded many questions of real intrigue and felt a real sense of belonging and not a member of a Victorian freak show which I had feared on my journey along the M27. Well the next 7 hours were filled with the beauty of the New Forest. Mother nature was out in force from the blue sky and warm autumnal sunshine to the many horses, cows and donkeys wandering freely with young in tow. My favourite view apart from the many picture postcard public houses was the sight of three pig snoozing right next to the tarmac totally oblivious to 1000 humans trying to complete 1 lap of this area of outstanding natural beauty. I can honestly say that all the words of encouragement I received from many passing cyclists helped me get round the last bend and receive my medal of achievement which is now hanging from my mantelpiece. Will I be back next year? You bet I will!

My First Gridiron

By India Patto

When I was younger I was a keen mountain biker, however I didn’t carry on with it, as I was so busy with other interests and soon out grew my mountain bike. It helped having parents who are keen cyclists and they did the Gridiron for the first time last year and really enjoyed it. I was thinking of taking up road cycling for about a year or so before anything really happened. Once I had decided that I was going to give it a go, it was just up to us finding a suitable bike. Conveniently a friend of my parents (who belongs to the same cycling club) was selling her old road bike. My Mum thought that maybe it would be suitable. Luckily it was perfect and soon I was riding it. My first ever road ride was out with my parents, I ended up doing around 25 miles! Not long after I did my second ride which was in the new forest and I did 48 miles. On my third ride I went with my Dad and did 53 miles, we also had a delicious breakfast stop halfway. My Mum and my Dad intended to do this years Gridiron together, until they realised Dad couldn’t go. Unfortunately he had double booked it with a M.T.B weekend in Wales. As he was busy they thought I might be able to take his place. I was a little nervous about this suggestion, as I wasn’t sure if I would be able to complete the Gridiron at over 100km! Despite this my heart wanted to give it a go so I did one more 38 mile ride with my Dad the week before. My Mum and me had to wake up super early to drive down to the New Forest, where other keen road cyclists awaited us. After parking about a

9

mile away, we cycled down to the hall. I slowly realised that all the people there were adults! I got a rush of nervous excitement through my bones and I could only see one other child amongst everyone. As my nerves drifted away only the excitement was left. We got signed in then followed the signs for refreshments and traded our green coins in for coffees and bought bacon butties as well. After gobbling down our energy, I felt ready to pounce and we got started on the road… A little while after we left and were gradually closing in on our first stop (Copythorne at 39.4km.) Mum and I caught up with a large group, after passing some slower riders. They seemed kind and made me feel very welcome, especially when I read part of their club motto ‘save the children’. It only felt like 20 minutes when we reached the first stop where there were a group of cubs helping out, which gave a lovely village community feel. After helping myself to a couple of hobnobs and some squash we were off again to carry on our ride. Having been to our second stop at 72.1km in Hyde, we passed a small village. Here there were little piglets, a big mummy pig, sheep, horses and even some ducks waddling along too. At that point I really appreciated how beautiful it was in the New Forest and how lovely it was to be riding here. Finally as I finished my ride I came to collect my gift bag as well as my last stamp for Lymington at 108.9km. The man at the desk (Mike) said, “This isn’t your card.” I was a little nervous because I was using my Dad’s entry card, and had ridden in his place. Although to my delight he showed great kindness and offered to write me out a card of my very own! I was very happy and pleasantly surprised. I also got a special Gridiron medal, which wasn’t given out to everybody. I was convinced that I would be tired at least 10 miles before then end and struggle to complete the ride. However, I managed to finish, still going strong, which surprised me a lot. I really enjoyed the Gridiron and hopefully my Mum, Dad and I will all be able to take part next year and many more years to come.

CTC Wessex Cycling AGM Minutes 2017 By Alan Baker 1. PRESENT:- 23 members of the Group were present. The President, Paul Rush, took the Chair. 2. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE:- were received from Mike Barrett; Penny Buckley; Bob Chittenden; Joan and Bob Courtney; Anna and Graham Dore; Jo Gordon; Rosalie and John Hayter; Keith Matthews; Nigel Pearce; David Smethurst; Ron Strudwick; Paul Turner; Terry Walsh; Richard Walter; and Christopher Yeo. 3. MINUTES OF AGM 2016:- were approved as a true record of the Meeting, proposed by Mike Walsh and seconded by Julian James. 4. MATTERS ARISING:- there were no matters arising from the Minutes not covered elsewhere on the Agenda. 5. REPORTS:(i) PRESIDENT/CHAIRMAN:- Paul Rush reported that the Group had been active in the period under review. The various riding groups now included a half-day ride on Tuesdays, coordinated by Ali Mackenzie. Regrettably, Jeannette and Martin King no longer coordinated the Dorset Dawdlers but Jim McDonald had stepped in to ensure the continuance of these rides. The Cycle Training programmes continued to be active in schools in Poole and Bournemouth, offering training for pupils from 5- to 15- years of age, and additional Group members had offered to undergo training to become Instructors in the future. The Group’s principal promotion, The Gridiron, had recently successfully taken place with John Jackson as Organiser for the seventh and final time. A Basic Course on Bicycle Maintenance had been successfully promoted and run twice in recent weeks. The Group’s membership had recently increased as a result of an increase in the Group’s geographic area following the discontinuance of adjacent Member Groups. (ii) TREASURER:- Mike Walsh presented the Group’s Annual Accounts for the year to 30 September 2017. He reported that the Group’s financial position was healthy with The Gridiron promotion having made a healthy surplus. Cash reserves were sufficient for the foreseeable future. The accounts were accepted as a true record of the Group’s financial situation, proposed by Maggie Ross, seconded by Mike Gordon and approved nem con. Mike Walsh sought the Meeting’s approval to claim the £200 Member Group annual allowance from National Office, proposed by John Jackson, seconded by Tony Clewes and approved nem con. (iii) CYCLE TRAINING COORDINATOR:- Steve Gray summarised developments during the period under review and prospects for the period ahead. His report is attached as Appendix 1. (iv) GROUP KITMASTER:- Tony Clewes reported that his first year in post had gone well, with a number of items sold and new stock ordered.

(v) RIDE COORDINATORS:- A number of reports were submitted and these are summarised in Appendix 2. Jim McDonald reported that at present he was struggling to find sufficient Ride Leaders for the Thursday Dawdlers and for the new Pedal Sunday group. Mike Walsh reported that the Poole Leisure Cycling group met on the first Saturday of each month between March and October for an eight mile easy-paced ride. (vi) GRIDIRON:- John Jackson reported that the event had taken place on Sunday 08 October using a modified route that had been tested and approved by Group members. He felt that this, his seventh and final Gridiron, had taken place successfully. The event had been fully-subscribed by mid-September with 1038 entries but, despite the very good weather conditions, there were only 693 starters, of whom 622 finished and signed-in. Additional riders completed the course but chose not to sign-in on finishing. A number of favourable comments were received from participants, and there were no complaints from any participants, helpers or members of the public. There was one relatively minor incident requiring first-aid. John paid tribute to, and thanked, the many helpers from the Group and from other local clubs who had provided catering and other help at the event HQ, (The Lymington Centre, in Lymington), at the Scout and Guide HQ at Copythorne, and at Hyde Memorial Village Hall; and to those associated with these three venues. He expressed his thanks to the Scouts at Copythorne for their very positive attitude in assisting at the new Control at their HQ. He said that this year the event was one of the CTC’s Challenge Rides and both National Office and the Group had provided free items to starters as momentos of the event. Many photographs were taken during the event. Those taken on behalf of the Group have been posted on Flickr, and those taken by riders may be viewed on Instagram. 6. 2018 EVENTS:- The events already in preparation for next year were noted. The Gridiron will be held on Sunday 14 October, with a new organiser, Daniel Armstrong, who has been shadowing John Jackson during the latter’s final year as organiser of this event. Paul Rush said that the Group’s new venture, the Reef Rides, based at The Reef Centre, Colehill, on Sunday 17 June, needed volunteer help from Group members. Mike Walsh mentioned the Wessex Super Randonneur Series of Audax BRM events at 200, 300, 400 and 600 km, which presented a formidable challenge to participants intending to complete all four events in the same year.

7. VOLUNTEERS:- Paul Rush repeated his request for additional help from Group members to ensure the continuing successful running of the Group’s affairs. Mike Walsh, Editor of the Group’s Newsletter “CycleInk”, asked for a Guest Editor to step forward to produce a single issue of the magazine. 8. BURSARIES:- Mike Walsh and Paul Rush reminded Group members that the Group had adequate funds available to help worthy causes such as a Bicycle Maintenance course for cyclists who were novice mechanics; and for the training of experienced cyclists as Cycle Training Instructors for school children and novice adults. 9. PRESENTATION OF AWARDS:- Paul Rush made presentations as follows: (i) The Sartain Cup – presented to Jim McDonald for his continuing meritorious work as Ride Coordinator for the Potterers and Dawdlers Ride Groups. (ii) The Riders’ Cup – presented to Graham Dore for successfully completing the London – Edinburgh – London Audax 2017. Presented in absentia. (iii) The Tourist Shield – presented to David Smethurst for successfully completing the London – Edinburgh – London Audax 2017. Presented in absentia. (iv) The Ron Cook Rosebowl (an award in the gift of the two previous holders, Richard Gow and Malcolm Howell) – presented to John Jackson for his hard work as organiser of The Gridiron event over the previous seven consecutive years. 10. ELECTION OF OFFICERS:- Officers were re-elected nem con, proposed by Rob Ward, seconded by John Jackson, as follows: President/Chairman Paul Rush Minute Secretary Alan Baker Vice-Chairman Julian James Auditor Ralph Huckle Secretary Mike Walsh Treasurer Mike Walsh Officers and Committee Members were re-elected nem con, proposed by Christine Ratcliffe, seconded by Julian James, as follows: Newsletter Editor Mike Walsh Welfare Officer ) Registrar ) Keith Matthews Membership Secretary ) Website Master ) Cycle Training Coordinator Steve Gray Right to Ride Rep (nomination) Paul Turner Committee Members

11. RATIFICATION OF REVISED GROUP CONSTITUTION:- It was explained that the Wessex Member Group has assumed responsibility for representing CTC/CUK members who live in adjacent geographical areas where there is no longer a Member Group, and that this enlargement of the Wessex Group’s area of responsibility needs to be reflected in the Constitution. Examples of member Groups that have dissolved are Salisbury and Blackmore Vale and Yeo Valley. It was proposed that the Constitution as so amended be approved, proposed by John Jackson, seconded by Graham Dengate, agreed nem con. 12. ANY OTHER BUSINESS:(i) Paul Rush announced that the Thursday Potterers and Rouleurs Christmas Lunch would be held on Thursday 14 December at the Bournemouth Sports and Social Club and would include some carolsinging led by the Thursday Rouleurs Choir. Tickets were about to go on sale via the organiser Dave Langley. (ii) Mike Walsh reported that a set of competition rollers were in store at Velo Domestique in Bournemouth and were available for use both within and outside the Group. Although the Wessex Group does not own the equipment, it has paid for new drive belts in order to maintain the set in usable condition. (iii) Mike Walsh (Newsletter Editor) reported that after many years of support as an advertiser, Royce UK Ltd had decided to withdraw from advertising on the covers of CycleInk. (iv) Peter Durant raised the question of the Wessex Group continuing as a member group of the CTC because of his dissatisfaction with National Office policies. Paul Rush and Mike Walsh explained that although there had been some initial interest in breaking away from CTC/CUK, this had later died away and there had been no support for a breakaway when the debate was raised in CycleInk and later in the Committee. (v) Mike Gordon raised the subject of the apparent need for Ride Leaders to be declared and covered by CTC Leader Insurance. Mike Walsh explained that the personal third party insurance that all CTC members enjoy does not cover the liabilities assumed by Ride Leaders and so all Ride Leaders in the Group have to be identified by Ride Coordinators and notified to the National Office for inclusion on their list of insured Ride Leaders. Mike said he was in the process of bringing the list of Ride Leaders up to date. Appendix 1 CYCLE TRAINING COORDINATOR’S REPORT Several CTC Wessex Group members who received bursaries from the CTC towards their training to become Bikeability Instructors work for both Poole and Bournemouth Boroughs delivering Bikeability training to

children’s schools and at King's Park as well as delivering some adult cycle training. Both Bournemouth and Poole Boroughs are trying to increase the number of children they deliver Bikeability to year on year and to some extent they are succeeding. The speed with which they can expand their schemes is constrained by the funding quotas imposed by the DfT in order to spread the government budget for cycle training across the schemes. The DfT provides £40 per child but limit the number of training places based upon delivery in previous years. Poole Poole has a well-established scheme which has been running for many years. The scheme administrators Peter Wickett and Emily Cooper started work last year when Tom Gaze moved on to another borough. They currently have just four Instructors on their books following the recent retirement of Paul Rush but have recruited one more Instructor who has recently completed his training at the same time as three new Instructors from the CTC Wessex Group (Rob Ward, Steve Coombes and Sue Coombes), who will presumably also be available for Poole to recruit if they need to do so to meet demands. The two other trainees making up the six on the course were Peter Wickett and Emily Cooper but they will generally not be involved in delivery except to cover in the event of the unexpected unavailability of one of the trainers already booked for a course. Delivery target for this year is as follows: Course Age 2017/18 Target number of % Completion Target pupils for year target to date Level 1 & 2 Year 6 (10-11) 407 66 Level 3 Year 8/9 (13-14) 46 0 Balance Year 1/2 (5-6) 63 100 Bournemouth Bournemouth's Bikeability scheme is relatively new although some form of cycle training has been in operation at King's Park for many years. The main scheme administrator was new to Bmth last year. There are currently 12 Training Instructors on Bmth’s books, sufficient for the current volume of work but this may change as more schools come on board. Bmth recently allocated responsibility for looking after current schools and bringing new schools on stream to their Lead Instructors (those who wished to take on this role) and the Council pays a premium per child for the extra work undertaken in getting schools on board. Current and prospective schools were shared out amongst the Lead Instructors. At least one course of about eight children runs over two Saturdays from Easter through to the end of October. Often there are two courses. Additional courses run on week days during school holidays. In 2017/18 the King's Park course will start in February! There are a further 29 schools which have yet to come on-stream. Persuading schools to join the scheme is not an easy task. Dorset Dorset has a cycle training scheme. They allocate areas to individuals to administrate. They do not respond to enquiries about taking on new Training Instructors. This is effectively a closed scheme. Appendix 2 RIDE COORDINATORS’ REPORTS Sunday Rouleurs (Rob Ward) The Sunday chapter of the hard-riding CTC roadies has been searching out the best coffee-stops Wessex has to offer, and can give grain by grain advice on the best toast and marmalade in the Kingdom. From Lymington in the east, to Dorchester in the west, and occasional forays north to the Ugly Duck and the Airfield, we seek out the best Wyvern-scorched offerings for hungry mile-eaters. All standards welcome, but must be able to make the café before breakfast stops being served. Occasional trips to local casualty departments have been offered as surprise gifts to the unwary. The group always packs a sense of humour along with the spare innertubes as even the ride leaders often don’t know the route, but we get there in the end. Whilst somewhat loose on organisational skills, the wide range of professional expertise in the gruppetto makes for some interesting conversation. Thanks to all the group for worth-getting-out-of-bed-early-on-a-Sunday rides this year. A special thank you for the Gridiron organisers and volunteers for making our latest outing so memorable; winner of a route, wonderful flora and fauna, and what a great performance from the Scouts at Copythorne! Pedal Sunday and Thursday Dawdlers (Jim McDonald) Rides were provided throughout the past year from start points at Wimborne, Ferndown, Merley and Hurn to various locations in East Dorset and the New Forest area, with distances between 40 and 50 miles. The Thursday Dawdlers have proved to be the most popular with attendances up to 15 riders when the weather was fine. Numbers riding all day often reduced by fifty per cent after the morning coffee break. Much the same pattern has been experienced for the combined Sunday Dawdlers and Potterers, with some welcome new faces. A falling off in attendance has been noted in the latter part of the summer, possibly due to holiday and family commitments, plus the somewhat poor weather. The Sunday Dawdlers/Potterers has been ’rebranded’ Pedal Sunday from

25

this October although the rides format will remain the same. There is currently difficulty in obtaining rides leaders for the Thursday Dawdlers, although this may be due the above mentioned decline in attendance. It is hoped that a full programme of rides on Thursdays and Sundays will be provided for the coming year, so members are to be encouraged to step up for the role of Ride Leader. Thanks should go to all those who have led rides over the past year. On the social side Bob Chittenden is organising a Dawdlers Christmas lunch to be held at “Not on Sunday” in Wareham on the 8th December next. Menu and cost to be announced. Poole Heart Support Group (Keith Matthews) The Heart Support Group continues to meet monthly and although I have a database of about 25 people, generally about 8 to 10 turn up. We enjoy a morning ride, covering about 20 miles and back home for lunch. Don't be fooled by 'Heart Group'; true we have all had stuff happen to us, but this is a real 'club' group and has a real club atmosphere about it. That means, we usually can't wait to get to the café. This year we have introduced a couple of extra routes, including our New Forest and Ornamental Drive tour of 25 miles which we have done twice now in opposite directions. Saturday Sixties (Mike Barrett) The Saturday Sixties continue to be well supported by a number of regular riders. We have ranged from 2 or 3 riders up to a maximum of 14 over the last year. As in previous years new riders have made contact by e-mail to ask for more details on pace etc. Some have returned on a casual basis and some only rode with us once. The pace had quickened with some riders unable to keep up, and discussions have been held with the regular riders about not pushing too hard. Most seem to be in agreement but I expect some will move away to enjoy faster rides elsewhere, so numbers attending may fall. The new ride to Sturminster Newton now seems to be unpopular so ideas about another destination are being sought. Tuesday Toasters (Ali Mackenzie) The short Tuesday ride [0930 Wimborne Square, to Blandford] is proving popular; individual routes to the meeting point are of course personal choice; the routes to Blandford and back can also be up for discussion; newbies/cyclists in rehab post injury, are always looked after the entire time with shortest route taken when preferable, out and back via Cow Grove and Langton Long. It is very much an informal ride, with no designated regular leader – you could be ‘the only one’ – but very unlikely, so far! The Forum Cafe in Blandford is very accommodating and friendly, with wonderful coffees, cakes, snacks – they do appreciate a call if our numbers are over 8, when they will seat us upstairs. Overall, going very well, and a lot of fun. Thursday Rouleurs (Mike Gordon) The Thursday Rouleurs have a variable programme of well attended weekly rides. We continue with our Spring and Autumn Century rides, and

this year on the Thursday closest to the Summer Solstice we had a 200km ride organised and led by John Jackson. There have been usual quarterly car assisted rides that have enabled us to explore new areas and also to give the mile eaters amongst us the chance to ride to the start as well. We continue to attract new members (why are they always faster than me?). All rides have been well supported (6 to 19) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have volunteered to lead rides. Thursday Potterers (John Hayter) The Thursday Potterers continue as a strong riding group. Of the e-mail group of forty, twenty five are regular riders, the others making their own way to the coffee stops and keeping in touch with cycling friends. Typically a Thursday ride will see fifteen on the road with eight going on to lunch. Potterers rides vary in length from 60 miles in the summer to 25 mile coffee out and back runs in December and January. Saturday BunRuns (Shawn Shaw) Our improvers ride, the BunRun, is intended to take those who wish to go there somewhere outside their comfort zone. To go where the road leads and to enjoy whatever it offers along the way. Generally sections will opt for routes that are less demanding. Whilst offering the fledgling tourist much, such routes will of themselves be limiting. There comes a time when the wings want to stretch out and touch the sky. That’s what we continue to do. It is six years since the monthly first Saturday BunRun ride. This past year Xtra rides have been added for the summer months on the third Saturday each month. Our range has extended into Wiltshire and south westerly beyond Wareham. Steve Gould, who is often sweeper, for which I thank him, remains a regular and Dave Proctor has joined us often enough this year to be thought such. Our success though is measured by how many come and then pass on to other things widening their touring experience. Faces return with tales of their latest adventures awheel before going off on more. BunRun is comfortably keeping ‘fit for purpose’. Poole Leisure Cycling (Mike Walsh) This ride is self-perpetuating. Officially it runs on the first Saturday of every month in Summer Time but this year they started in March. It is a ride from Upton House around Holes bay stopping in Hamworthy Park for a coffee, about 8 miles in total. Committee meetings at The Conservative Club, Kinson.
