5. Printing and Finishing Printing methods

While no printing method is 100% sustainable, there are options to consider based on your goals, such as using water or soy-based inks.

Alternative Sustainable Solutions

• Blind Embossing/Debossing: no inks used

• Sewing labels or patches: After removing the patch or label, some materials can then be recycled afterwards (depending on the base material and the patch material)

Other Considerations

• The fewer the colors, the less detailed the design, and a smaller print coverage can all lead to less water waste discharged to the environment

Examples: Velcro, buttons, zippers

Legal Requirements:

• US law requires country of origin information to be permanently visible on any product entering the country. For cut and sew products, a printed sewn in label with this information is typically what is seen. If a bag is laminated, printing the country of origin information on the bag is most cost effective.

• Other customer-specific information is sometimes printed on the sewn in label (legal information, entanglement warnings, care instructions, traceability codes).
