Daish’s Holidays sees coach holiday bookings rise

Over 44 per cent of Daish’s coach holiday makers are from the Midlands -

The appetite for staycations remained strong in 2023 for independent familyowned UK coach holiday group Daish’s Holidays, with the firm witnessing increased growth in both annual turnover and coach travel to its 12-strong portfolio of hotels Both turnover and coach travel have seen an increase of almost 10 percent

compared to the previous 12 months

It’s not always what but how!

The group travel trade show season is under ways again Excursions 2024, took place at Wembley Arena on 27 January, saw the first opportunity of the year for group travel organisers, destinations, visitor attractions and suppliers to get together

It’s a great opportunity for GTOs to find inspiration for their trips for the year ahead. But as Wendy HartleyScarff, chief executive of AGTO, the Association of Group Travel Organisers, explains, simply explaining what there is to see and do is only

part of the story

“Excursions is always a really great day out,” she says. “I never cease to be surprised at discovering destinations and attractions, as well as suppliers, that I haven’t come across before. It will be the same at the British Tourism and Travel Show at the NEC in Birmingham on 20 and 21 March. Later in the year, on 3 October, the Group Leisure and Travel Show will attract GTOs to Milton Keynes. Elsewhere there are a number of group travel events, including London for Groups Live, taking place in Covent Garden in central London on 3 September Each show has something different to offer, but I would doubt any visitor would leave without having a bag full of leaflets, brochures, USB sticks and those allimportant contacts.

“But here’s the thing. When you get home and start to work your

way through all the information you’ve collected, do you find yourself asking the question: Yes, all very well and good, but how do I put together an itinerary? If you’re simply heading to a stately home, a seaside resort or city, it’s probably fine You’ll talk with your preferred coach operator and arrange a drop-off and pick-up point You might be thinking of hiring a Blue Badge registered tourist guide to bring the visit to life. But if you’re thinking of including two destinations or attractions, or more in the day, or you’re planning a two-day trip, or longer, how best might you pull such an itinerary together

“It seems that in this post COVID-19 world, destinations and attractions have realised that simply explaining what there is to see and do is no longer enough They’re beginning to recognise

the importance of explaining how a visit might be scheduled. A tour of a house or garden in the morning, then lunch, then off to a neighbouring attraction in the afternoon. The more enlightened destinations and attractions realise that if they offer guidance on the ‘how’, it might make the GTO more likely to visit After all, those same destinations and attractions understand how long it takes for a tour, or to travel (by coach) between locations Those that offer suggested itinerary ideas are showing that they’re bothered about you In return, you may very well give them your business.

“There’s another point in all of this Not so long ago, many county tourist offices would have only told you about places to visit in their county, even if there was a superb attraction just across the county line. Today, they recognise that including ‘somewhere else’ in a suggested itinerary could be the make or break that sees you plan a trip.

“Enjoy this year’s trade shows, but in asking about the what, don’t forget to check out the why!”

Johnsons Journal

The continuing, amazing adventures of Pauline & Ken, on their travels.

WALLONIA - Southern Belgium

Wallonia is an area not as popular with tourists as Flanders in the north After being introduced, at a travel trade show, by Andy Holmes of Norman Allen Group Travel, to Philippe from the Belgium Tourist Office (Wallonia), I decided to book a tour

Our usual coach company no longer goes to Europe, so Andy suggested Pulham’s Coaches who provided us with a firstclass coach and excellent driver, Justin We had decided to use DFDS Ferries from Dover to Dunkirk. After the fiasco of the Easter holidays, where coaches were delayed for unacceptable amounts of time, DFDS introduced an

APP that speeded their boarding procedure at the terminals. Initially I was not very happy with the prospect of having to download the App and scan all our group’s passports on the days of travel I am so glad I persisted though

Having decided to scan the passports as people boarded the coach at the pick-up points, it emerged that one passenger had left her passport in the photocopier at home Luckily there was someone able to take her home and back before the coach departure time. What a costly disappointment that would have been if she had got to the Port before she found this out. Then, whilst other coaches were taking 15 minutes or more to register, we not only were checked in instantly but were offered a much earlier ferry to Calais This enabled us to be at our first hotel, The Aziz in Mouscron, a good hour earlier – extra time to relax, stroll around and have a

leisurely drink in a pavement café in the town before dinner

Our first excursion was to The Hospital of the Rose in Lessines Founded in 1242, it was two hundred years older than the one we had been to in Beaune on our river cruise in April It housed a nursing community of Augustinian nuns who cared for the poor and needy as well as the sick The entrance was through the chapel as in those days they believed you were sick due to your sins The hospital grew its own herbs for making the potions in the Pharmacy. It was only in 1980 that it closed and, as it needed a lot of restoration, it was going to be pulled down. Instead, it was saved and made into a museum. We had two excellent guides who really bought the place to life Afterwards we enjoyed a lunch of filled baguettes with wine

and water before continuing to our hotel near Durbuy (The Azur en Ardenne).

With our first hotel we had a set menu At the Azur en Ardenne everyone’s choices for the 3 course, 2 choice dinner menu was required, in advance, for all 5 days The short time given to contact the group, collate all the orders onto a spreadsheet, then have it checked was not something I would wish to have to do again However, the meals were not the usual group fare, more gourmet style. Breakfast at both hotels was an extensive buffet The weather being perfect we ate out on the terrace every evening.

When we first contracted the holiday a guide from Mouscron was to have been with us for the whole time we were in Belgium. However, he decided to

cancel This had left the Tour Operator in somewhat of a quandary as it was fairly last minute Philippe came to the rescue by asking Olivier from Tourist Board head office, who lived near Durbuy, if he would step in to help once we arrived at the second hotel. In hindsight the other guide did us an immense favour Olivier wasn’t a tour guide in that sense, but he was empathetic, extremely organised and had lots of local tourist contacts.

A morning in La Roche

Battle of Waterloo the next day was a highlight of the tour We had an ‘All Sites Pass’ to allow us to go into firstly to the visitor centre, where we saw a 3D film of the battle. Several of the group then climbed the 226 steps up to The Lions Mount next to the Panorama with its 360 degree battle painting Then we continued to Hougoumont Farm (where the British were based) and

Several people spent time at the Museum of the Battle of Ardennes This told the story of the WWII Battle of the Bulge and the town’s liberation by American and British forces. We then went on to Durbuy, visiting the Topiary Gardens and spending time in the town itself, a 10 minute walk across the river bridge.

The three sites of the 1815

finally into Waterloo itself for a lunch break and to visit the Wellington Museum A very interesting day enjoyed by all.

The next day we visited The Three Valleys Railway It wasn’t a usual running say so they put on a special steam train just for us The journey took 40 minutes then we were given just over an hour at the terminus where there was a museum, café and workshops Returning by train we then continued to Dinant, birth place of Adolphe Sax who invented the saxophone, for a 45 minute river cruise on the river Meuse. We had just enough time to visit the small Sax Museum (free) and see all the saxophone sculptures on the bridge.

Our last day was to one of the oldest tourist tramways which runs on a section of disused railway from Erezée, through woodlands alongside the Aisne river, where beavers have built dams Some of the trams are over a hundred years old As, once again, we were being given exclusive access on a non-operating day, Olivier thoughtfully arranged with a local caterer to supply us with

filled rolls and a drink for lunch, which he collected and served himself after the 2 hour tram ride

Our last venue was to the small Defroidmont chocolate factory and museum. The short video is in French, but with Olivier translating that wasn’t a problem We were given 3 samples of their chocolates as we went into the museum and then were able to see the chocolates being made through a glass window above the café The chocolates were delicious as were the cups of hot chocolate or coffee we all bought at the end, served with two more samples No one was inclined to rush away, and many boxes of chocolates were purchased They even provided, free of charge, insulated boxes to put our purchases in as the weather all week was around 30 degrees

A word of warning now to those people who continually disregard the seat belt rule and think they don’t need to wear one in a coach. Justin had a van driver speed in front of him from a slip road; the trailer he was towing jackknifed just yards in front of the coach across the lane we were travelling in It was only Justin’s quick reactions that saved the day, but there was still enough of a jolt when he braked that anyone without a seat belt could have been very badly injured.

Follow in the footsteps of the 16th Irish and 36th Ulster Divisions through the Wijtschate-Messines Ridge expe rience

The Wijtschate-Messines Ridge experience commemorates the Battle of Messines (7th-14th June 1917) in World War I, where the 16th Irish and 36th Ulster Divisions played pivotal roles This battle, part of the larger conflict on the Western Front, marked a significant moment in military history

The 16th (Irish) Division and the 36th (Ulster) Division, representing different Irish political sentiments, joined forces to capture the strategic village of Wytschaete, held by the German 4th Army since 1914.

The Castle’s royal ties date back to the 6th century Kings of Northumbria who chose Bamburgh as their capital – a cosmopolitan citadel which drew people from across Europe.

New immersive and interactive interpretations give a window into the Castle’s past and the people who have shaped its journey, while fans of hit Netflix series The Last Kingdom can get up close to costumes and props

Bamburgh Castle

The fairy-tale like structure of Bamburgh Castle stands tall above the spectacular Northumberland shoreline, making this one of the most famous castles in the world.

A natural fortress forged by volcanic rock, crashing waves and shifting sands, archaeologists believe people have lived here since the Bronze Age

worn by actors in an exclusive exhibition at the Castle which was the original fortress of Bebbanburg that inspired both the series and Bernard Cornwell’s epic Saxon Stories

Bamburgh Castle is open daily with tickets available to buy online at

www.bamburghcastle.com or at the gate The Castle grounds are dog friendly.

Bolton Castle is one of the best preserved medieval castles in the country. Owned by the same

family for over 600 years, the castle offers five floors, including a dungeon, and extensive gardens and maze, estate-bred wild boars and a falconry experience The castle provides an insight into the turbulent history of the last six centuries within its own walls, but also with the extensive programme of events that showcase living at the castle over the centuries in both war and peaceful times.

The castle is famed for hosting Mary Queen of Scots who was held at the castle for six months in some luxury before her removal to Carlisle Castle The castle sits proudly in Wensleydale, a few miles from the North Yorkshire market town of Leyburn, with extensive views over the dale.
